Sighing to himself he says "what's it all for... he'll just blurt out the whole plot in the first 3 minutes anyway..." before using the warmth of the only appliance in the room, to sleep, dreaming of the ridge wallet he was lromised but never received. Not that he knew what he would do with it anyway. (Be kind, my tablet poofed my spellcheck literal years ago.)

I would totally buy a haunted house. Got a cheap lease on my last place because they couldn't keep tenants. It sat next door to the massive city graveyard and I loved it because no one ever came around and it was super peaceful. Dead people make the best neighbors.
My last apartment was next to a cemetery where the Old West pioneers of the town were buried. I loved going there to write in peace. 100% agree that dead people are the best neighbors.
We live right next to the cemetery. Technically our neighbor's lot is right next, but you can clearly see headstones from our dining room and even read the names. The only problem is the rude neighbors that allow their children to play outside complete with blood curdling screams. Also the jerks that thought: let's play in the cemetery on land that doesn't have headstones on it, despite living 3 blocks from a lovely park/playground.
In general I agree living by a cemetery is great. My mom grew up by the same cemetery and would bring flowers home to her mom that she took off graves.
I lived in front of a graveyard. You get amazing trees and wildlife, and quiet ❤️

My family was driving through a city and they had a nursing home right next to the graveyard. With my morbid sense of humor I laughed and my parents were like... what's so funny. All I could imagine was like, "do you think they put this on the brochure? Nursing home and funeral arrangements all in one." I explained that to my parents and my dad was like "I've raised you right".

I love how Simon goes from "I have home insurance if it burns, but I won't get the time and effort back for making my home" to "if you leave a chip pan unattended, your house SHOULD burn down!" within minutes. The magic of his tangents.
Thing is, I'm sat in bed smoking while watching this video (and I'll put my cigarette out fully in a proper ash tray and not light another one if I start to feel drowsy, also my smoke and carbon monoxide alarm have good batteries in as I have a log burning stove.... still get nervous cooking with deep oil though)
From buying a cursed Picasso, to hyping it into a goldmine and then its subsequent vandalism, even Simon's tangents have a story arc.

My neighbor got her house for like 75k less than it's worth because the last owner fell down the stairs and died. Everybody was afraid of it. Like 8 years later she's still fine, to everybody's dismay.
My neighbor got their house for $100k less, half price, because of the 2008 financial crisis (I purchased mine in 2007). Like you, I also did not kill them. good job. It takes a lot to be the bigger person sometimes and no one gives any credit for it. So here's to you good sir.

The 2008 problem happened entirely because incompetent people were buying things they should have known they could not afford. Banks were inappropriately giving loans to sub prime (nice way to say loser) people that could never afford to pay them back. Your house was never actually worth that extra $100k.
We're talking about things that have less value because they are "haunted" like your brain. Not remotely like any of the 2008 nonsense.

This was fun, because I used to frequent a bar where one room had this and several other portraits of crying children as a decoration 😁 Apparently the curse doesn't extend to Sweden, because as far as I know, there were no fires in that bar. Or perhaps it was cancelled out by the several portraits of an old sailor hanging on the other wall.
I actually remember my mother saying something about this curse after my dad bought one of these paintings at an auction back when I was around 6. Since I was born in 1985 I guess it was still pretty fresh.
I remember my Grade 9 picture day really well. The staff contracted the job to a local photography studio for the photos themselves and they were not happy for the job. My school was rough, my class especially was known for making nine substitute teachers quit teaching all together. But picture day was something else. Everyone showed up in goofy outfits, hotdog costumes, or with random shit adorning their heads and bodies, and most kids were outwardly aggressive to the photographers.
When it came to my turn and the guy doing the photos said smile, he already looked like he hot-boxed an entire carton of smokes, drank 2 caraffes of coffee, and had been run over by a car. Regardless, I pulled my "freaky" face I made in every photo. He takes his finger off the button put his hands on his hips and said "Dammit, be polite! I've done 250 pictures today, I've got 300 pictures left, stop fucking around or I'll send you to the principal's office!" And, I straightened up, looked at the camera and got the photo.
I feel like his writers love doing craziness to get Simon worked up. Also, Danny got a literary flourish in on a few occasions. I heard the word Blaze multiple times in his script. Also, I need to know Danny. After watching The Shining did your family also chase you around yelling, "Danny, Danny Boy"!?
Am I going to hell for subtly hoping that last bit is an awkward confession and not just a slightly random, but highly amusing joke?

I do what I can to spread joy. Obviously with what a massively devout Evangelical Christian Simon is I watch all of his Channels. He keeps me locked up in a basement just to try and convert people to psychotic, I mean devout, Christianity and or Religion generally.

Danny’s writing is always so polished and clever, I can’t get enough of his slightly warped sense of humor and the obscure little references he casually drops into his scripts, for people who know what he’s talking about. Ever since Simon skipped Danny’s introduction in that one brain blaze, I’ve wondered why brain blaze has strictly enforced word counts but other channels can sometimes run for hours per episode. I’m very happy to see Danny writing some longer form scripts, no matter the channel it’s always good.

An Epic Blaze on Decoding the Unknown! I love seeing your many talented writers do crossovers on your other channels, Simon, and I was always thinking it would be awesome to see Danny's take on a different program. Well Christmas came early and I was not disappointed! 😃

I have 3 copies of the crying boy and have had them for four years and funny enough my house never went on fire, possibly because i dont have a chip pan from the 1980s. I remember my parents breaking their painting up when the news broke of this possible curse. To be honest, i think it was a media stunt to advertise news papers and i think the media, drummed up the story to get attention to their news paper.
Also got 2 copies at our house and yet to burn.
We had one of those paintings when I was a kid.
Considering curses don't exist and coincidences and money-grubbin folks in the media industry do, I'm going to choose to prefer your explanation. 🤔

I recall staying at my nan's house when I was about 8 or 9 years old (in the East of England, not the North). My uncle came around one evening and got into a heated argument with her about a painting she had of a crying boy. He warned her that the painting was evil and would set fire to the house. She told him he was being silly and that she was not going to get rid of it. That was in 1985/86; I'm not sure where the painting is now, but as far as I know, there were never any fires at her house.
I worked in a charity shop a few years ago. I came in one morning and there was a newly donated crying boy painting in the corner. I was like "NOPENOPENOPE get that tf out".

Making a guess at 27:50 in the video - I think the paintings are withstanding the fires in some cases because whatever materials they are created with are flame-resistant. If these are being mass-produced, they're being made cheaply. So maybe it's something in the Chinese lead paint, lol. We'll see...

Simon's peroration on the practicality of renting a haunted property makes me imagine a burlesque parody of 'The Canterville Ghost'.
People choose the weirdest photos of their kids to display. My parents absolutely treasure a studio shot of me when I'm about two years old, pensively contemplating a red rose whose stem I'm holding in my chubby little toddler fingers. It's very solemn and beautiful...until you look at Toddler Me's face. Anyone who knows me knows I still make that particular thoughtful face any time someone does something bafflingly irritating. It's my face of "I don't know wtf you're doing and I am about to make that your problem in the most dramatic way possible". Apparently the photographer's trick was to hand his child subject the flower, then take the photo as they reflexively looked down at it. It probably worked well most of the time, but decades later my best friend took one look at that photo and said, "Oh, my God, were there any survivors?!" 😂
Bonus story: I briefly attended a small Catholic college that had group photos of its early graduating classes displayed in the dining hall. These were mostly shots of a dozen people or less, with seventies hair, all smiling cherubically while wearing black graduation gowns. But there was one photo that included a young woman with shaggy dark hair, standing apart from the group, wearing heavy eyeliner and death-glaring at the camera while making devil horns with her left hand while everyone else posed and smiled as normal. I never figured out who she was and the priests would never answer questions about the photo, so I like to imagine she wasn't visibly present at the photoshoot and just turned up in the image later.
It doesn’t stop in adulthood, either, the mind-boggling choice of photos and displays, that is. There was a still from a film I worked on that made it into (if I recall correctly) Time Magazine, where in the photo of George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, I’m directly between them about 15 feet into the background as a secretary, and thoroughly blurry, (though recognizable if you know me.) I came home for a holiday dinner that year and found the full photo printed from the internet onto standard computer paper, and prominently posted on the refrigerator like one of my preschool finger paintings. I thought it was a joke for me that day, until my dad proudly told me he makes everyone who stops by look at it. Well, alright then, Pops. Whatever works.
(Oh, and I haven’t changed the hair or makeup, but I do apologize for the devil horns-it was the 80’s and all, you know, and Catholic school was just so very grating by grade 12-can’t believe they left me on the wall. 😈)

Frequently remove the lint from the lint trap in your dryer! My grandmother grilled that into my head, now I check it before and after every load because I'm paranoid about burning down my house! Sadly my wife won't check it often, so I keep finding enough lint in it to make a sweater.
Danny, I love your work and I was pleasantly surprised to finally have another longer form script by you (Most business blaze fans want Simon to come to his damned senses and let you bring back your excellent introductions). By the way, do you know the town of Huddersfield in Yorkshire? I hadn’t really thought of this before, but its not very far from Rotherham. My gg grandmother was from Almondbury in Huddersfield. I’m from Rotherham originally. I remember my auntie having the crying boy up on her wall. I also remember the stories of fires in the papers, well the kids at school talking about them. My aunt never had any problems with hers but I remember keeping one eye on it whenever she was babysitting me.
My grandparents had that second crying boy painting in one of their guest rooms while I was a kid. The house never had a fire but that painting always creeped us out. The kind of painting where the eyes follow you.
I always love these, but I'm particularly interested to see what Danny has written for us. Mystery flavored Blazing today!

Another great episode! Simon is a legend. I love his snarky asides and random tangents.
So, as it seems that the temporarily multi-person basement crew was clearly forced to cannibalize poor, young, naive Callum at some point during "The Pandemic Years”, (perhaps Simon forgot to toss down scraps of food or even just an eggcup of gruel now and then when he broke his collarbone riding his big boy bike,) and the other residents seem to have escaped, been mysteriously freed, or possibly been imprisoned by *actual* law enforcement-regarding Callum’s grisly fate, I feel that my darling Danny is again alone and in solitary confinement-without any of his special dietary needs, preferences, and requirements.
As I simply could NOT bear the nightmarish thought, I had to lock said thought in a dybbuk box to make room for other thoughts-though on the way through the ritual, it did occur to me that the legend of the dybbuk box could be a fascinating topic for this particular channel, so I quite obviously had to put that brilliant epiphany into the box as well, such a shame though it may be. I needed to clear my mind to find adequate focus to save my beloved Danny, with whom I have a longterm, deep, and meaningful relationship-as once upon a time, he clicked the eponymous “Like Button” on a reply of mine to a tweet of his-which as everyone knows is an official, unbreakable, internationally binding contract of engagement to be married.
One of his local friends from Rotherham commented on my comment, flirted quite politely, but hardly subtly, and then invited me to come live there and join the locals, claiming every person in town is as charming, fascinating, and, as the kids used to say, “ROTFLMFAO-worthy" as dearest Danny. I cannot remember his name, as I was appropriately scandalized by his clean language with somewhat clever double entendres, but as he was clearly another demon attempting to distract me, it was into the dybbuk box with him, as well, I’m afraid. The most unfortunate part is that I’ve managed to unintentionally delete my Twitter account since then, and cannot go back and gaze wistfully on the bit where it revealed to me the miracle that “Danny Salter has liked your Tweet”, nor admire the epic number “1” of how many people did so.
Before this reaches the level and length of one of Simon’s tangents, after which he asks *us* how “we” got there, and snaps that “no one cares”, as though we might have been bewildered and confused enough to think we did, I’ll try to get to the point.
I volunteer as (no, not tribute-you lot watch too many JLaw films, clearly,) to come care for my betrothed, and keep him well-fed with whatever unusual, but surely divine, concoctions of food his precious, snarky little heart desires, and to lounge at his feet for hours and days on end, listening with rapt adoration as he reads aloud to me his brilliant, illustrious, and life-changing introductions for videos-which may be as long, complex, anecdotal, and even seemingly unrelated to the topic in the title as his little heart desires, all to my delight. What say you, my Restrained Rotherham Romeo? (Seriously, though, wherefore art thou, Romeo? Google maps has absolutely refused to be of assistance.)

Got to this one a bit late, but it's been one of my favourites in a while. Like you, I don't believe in all this curse nonsense; however, enough insane coincidences happen back to back and even (mostly) sane people like my family start talking curse. Much as they did with our own cursed paintings about 15 years ago. So, if you have a minute, let me tell you a tale.
My uncle is an old school Harley Davidson biker dude. So when he decided to hang some art in his house for a change, he of course decided on a pair of motorcycle painting that he paid about 5 grand for. He mentioned that it was a good investment because they were worth a fair bit more, but the guy selling them was trying to offload them fast. At the time, we assumed he was strapped for cash (like a reasonable person would), though later my folks would wonder if it wasn't something more.
At the time he bought them, my uncle was renovating his house, so he asked us to store them at our place (in my closet no less) for the time being. About a week after we took possession of the paintings, we had a massive rainstorm (not terribly common in Edmonton Alberta) and our house flooded. Many of our paintings, family photos and other items were ruined, but since it hadn't been a major flood (only part of the basement) and the motorcycle paintings were in my second floor bedroom, they were spared.
Given that our place was now just as much of a mess as mu uncle's, he took the paintings back while our house got fixed up. Less than two weeks later, an electrical fire started in his home and while the place didn't burn to the ground, a lot of things were ruined; however, once again, the paintings were unharmed. We'd mostly cleaned things up from the flood by this point, so we took the paintings back once more and once again, into my closet they went.
Another two-ish weeks passed and I was hanging out with my friends after school when my uncle's nephew (but not my brother or cousin, yes my family tree is weird) come running down the hall looking for me (yes I was also one of the only teens behind the times who didn't have a cell phone in the late 2000's). My house had flooded again, though this time there hadn't been so much as a drop of rain. I ran home quickly and when I opened the front door, a massive blast of hot moisture hit me. Everything in the entire house was soaked in a mist, the downstairs had nearly a foot of water. Later, we had discovered the cause, when I'd come home on my lunch break, I'd run the dishwasher (as I had done thousands of time before) and the hose had somehow snapped between the main floor and the basement where it connected to the hot water tank and just kept constantly pumping hot water into the basement celling. We lost a lot this time, the humidity was so bad that most of our papers and photos that had survived the previous flood and had been moved up to the second floor sustained serious damage. However, once again, the motorcycle paintings were fine.
The next day, after cleaning up the worst of it all, my mother tossed the paintings in the back of the family minivan to drive the ten blocks to my uncle's place to return them once more. She got in a car accident two blocks from home. Fortunately, it was just a minor fender-bender and she was fine, but still, this is when the word curse started seriously getting thrown around. Soon after, my uncle sold the paintings and all the craziness also coincidentally stopped.
I'm a lot like Simon, a big skeptic. All of these things had logical explanations as to why they happened; however, the fact that they all happened in the space of two months and the paintings were present every time and emerged unscathed... Yeah, I still don't think it was a curse, but damn was it one hell of a coincidence.

For those who do not know what a Chip Pan is (like myself) apparently it's a pot you put oil in and fry your Chips, or french fries if you're from NA. Think a deepfryer but from the mists of time.
Let Danny write more long scripts for other channels, CC, DTU, even the science of science fiction if he has any thoughts.

Absolutely, I honestly think Danny is the best writer on RUclips, and ever since that time Simon just skipped the introduction Danny had written for Brain Blaze, I’ve realized that Simon doesn’t really grasp how talented a writer he has with Danny writing for him. He’s the only script writer on RUclips (and elsewhere, for that matter) that always awes me with his wit and sense of humor. I wish he would write a book or something, he has the talent.

Also, every. single. time. that Simon complains about an intro’s length, he goes on a tangent at least 2.6 seconds longer to regain his imagined status as alpha male or some such nonsense, and it hardly makes sense to give anyone crap on length of topics or sections by now. I’ve attempted to start a “Bring Back Long Intros!” chant all day, but it seems this is not the most conducive platform for rousing vocal chants. I’m fully open to better ideas.

I am reminded of the short story, 'The Black Madonna' by Harold Lawlor, first published in Weird Tales, May 1947, and later adapted for the U.S. television show Thriller as 'The Grim Reaper', air date June 13th, 1961. Both versions feature a cursed painting that bleeds as a sign of its owner's coming violent death.

"Splat Cat" was a thing in the 80's, I collected them. A cat with tire treads across the middle. Stuffed, my personal fav, came in many colors 😋 there were small ones and large ones, I won my first one at a fair, so great! 😀

Good day.. from time to time I search stories about the crying boy and yours was only 4 weeks old (when I watched it) the story is about my grandparents and I live in the same house now. I found it quite amusing when I bought the house in 2013 I had a letter addressing to my grandfather asking about the crying boy but since my grandfather passed years before I mentioned it to my mother (his daughter) and see told me the story
So glad you covered this. We had a picture of a crying boy. House caught fire. (Faulty gas connection. Nothing supernatural) didn't live near danny though. The painting was left unscortched allegedly. I think I do remember seeing the painting on the wall unscortched but maybe it's a false memory because I was told that. We definitely did have the picture though, I know that much. Nice to listen to logical explanations on the theory of the "cursed painting"

We had a house fire about a month ago...it's amazing what does and does NOT burn in one, even if the objects are sitting fairly close to each other... didn't surprise me that those paintings survived, even BEFORE it was mentioned that they were made on some fire resistant materials!

I read something a while ago that said Scientists had ran some tests on the paintings and determined that the reason they were apparently untouched during the fires were due to treatment with oils or some such coatings that were/are naturally fire-resistant.
I seem to recall it was a type of Varnish used, but I may be wrong.
There was also a story of a guy who painted anguished pictures, reputedly mixed his blood with the paint he used and then unfortunately eventually committed suicide.
I find that story way more disturbing and unsettling.
Note: as I wrote comment I was still watching the video. Great episode as always Simon and the team.

17:00 My HS would have those panoramic class pictures every year. One year, our math and shop teachers were poised at the starting edge of the stands. So after the camera passed them, they ran behind the stands to the other end. So that year we had "twins" in our picture.

They are actually illegal to sell where I live and are highly discouraged from being used now that self contained fryers are thing so you don't have to have a big pot of oil sitting on top of an exposed heat source or flame.

Here in Cape Town many households have a copy of the crying boy painted by Tretchikov. He lived here in Cape Town.
This triggered a childhood memory, except not for Northern England but Northern Germany where I grew up. I recall as a child in the 80s the story appeared in German tabloid BILD (which I would consider less reputable and more rabble-rousing than The Sun, also it used to have its page 3 girl on page 1 which served a major source of inspiration for a young adolescent lad in the pre-internet days). I was quite spooked by the story at the time, esp. since several friends of my parents had similar images in their homes. None of those places burned down, as far as I know, and today the anecdote primarily serves as a reminder that I could be quite a gullible kid at times. :D
