Future Simon, I've useful tip for You to write down (because in other way, You'll definietly forgot about this) in polish "cz" is spelled like "ch" in english like in a word "chapel" and "sz" is spelled like "sh" like in word "shatter"
Also "L" in his name is not an "L" but "Ł" that is spelled like "W" i "whiski" [j=prolonged "e" sound)
also amber is flamable, as a stoned tree sap, but can be melted if you don't use open fire directly on them
apparently, being poor and broke is quite good to keep one's carbon footprint low. I'm at 6.1.. unless I lived in a hut with no electricity and became a vegan that foreswore any type of modern convenience like healthcare, I don't think I can get much lower.
@@gonzo26nix It's a retro thing. Answer the simple questions to reveal your sins. Then click the 'pay now!' button and buy your carbon indulgences. Sins instantly forgiven, and you can book that next private jet trip like DeCaprio. Catholics did this centuries ago, but didn't have the benefit of websites and online payments.
Don't worry, don't feel guilty. The carbon market is a scam created to make you guilty while the oil companies get wealthier. ruclips.net/video/G_zjhp5HyfI/видео.html
Hank: “What the heck is a carbon offset?”
Dale: “It's like a 'get out of jail free' card for people concerned about the environment but not concerned enough to do anything.” lol had to quote this beautiful episode from King of the Hill, episode aired in 2008 btw
imagine remaking the amber room, then after a few centuries you accidentally find it again and end up with two. happens to me all the time
You can never have too much Amber rooms right?
@@SonjaHamburg oh noooo
@@SonjaHamburg There is a similar joke here in the US, except instead of the Amber Room, you find Jimmy Hoffa
@@RemyJackson oh noooo
@@RemyJackson This is absolutely hilarious
The answer to "does amber melt or burn?" is "yes". Amber can be heated up to become pliable and pressed into shape with a bit of pressure. But the moment you apply too much heat it burns. Think plastic, not glass. The temperatures of a full building fire are definitely going to burn it.
Wow, amber sounds like most of my relationships! 😂
@@bsadewitz Ask Depp as he had similar
@@Tuck-Shop wow. That joke has levels. Nice
Glass may not burn but most house/castle fires are more than hot enough to melt it and make indistinguishable it from the melted stone and sand around it.
Many things that can catch fire also have a melting point far below ignition point. I'm kinda surprised he didn't get that right away. I've watched a few of these videos the last few days and he seemed so much more intelligent until he was baffled by something being capable of melting *and* catching fire at different temperatures.
It's not like they extract the frames for his glasses straight out of an oil well. Cars aren't hewn out of a solid iron deposit. Your house is (Probably) not made out of a hollowed out tree. Most things can, and are, processed and molded before it gets to the consumer.
As an end: Amber is not just flammable. It is *highly* flammable at fairly low temperatures. It's about as safe as an oil soaked rag covering a candle in a fire situation.
Yeah, I was thinking flammable like a resin or wax....and subject to wicking by upholstery fabric and drapery etc.
“Rooms have the tendency to stay where you put them”. Strong start! 😂😂😂
It was always my understanding that Amber can be burned in fire. With the extreme amount of destruction during the final period of the Second World War, it isn’t too much of a stretch to assume that the boxes containing the Amber Room were burned, and therefore completely destroyed.
Makes sense, it is a tree resin. According to Google, it burns like incense, with a black smoke, and doesn't melt.
Just think of wax candles, you can either melt and shape the stuff or expose it to more heat and burn it.
When amber burns it lets off an intense odor. That much amber the whole city would have noticed.
@@alaskanwoman9398 suppose, but it could be hard to make out if everything already smelled like exploded shells
@@alaskanwoman9398 I think perhaps the residents had a few things higher up their list of concerns than an unusual odour while the city burned.
Nice to see a video with "Amber" not being followed by "Heard".
When I first saw the title, I misread it and was thinking " I really don't want to hear more about what happened in Amber Heard's room."
Forever Amber . . . eritic novels from the sixties for 500, Alec.
It was a ploopy plop on the bed by all accounts. Definitely NOT treasure !
or TURD hehe
My dog stepped on a bee yesterday - no one would believe me...
Sadly its true
Imagine turning the world from a semiprecious "stone"! I love amber...but its name has been tainted big time.
Simon - "i know the Amber Room from something."
Simon's followers - "you did make a video on it on a different channel already."
1000's of years from now, aliens are going to find a submarine filled with amber panels at the bottom of the ocean, and they're going to be *very* confused about wtf we were up to.
Good. Along with the other mysteries that are mystifying us now.
I say we purposely do some other weird stuff just to confuse future aliens and generations
Only Simon could watch the Jurassic Park movies, movies which specifically outline why bringing dinosaurs back to life is a bad idea, and go, "That's so cool! Why aren't we doing that?!" Lmao
t’be fair, Jurassic Park has confused messaging about dinosaur coolness the same way as shooter games with anti-war messages.
plus the writer is an idiot with big ideas and limited knowledge. my doctor-dad read his book about a supervirus or whatever and described him as similar to “that one scary doctor that keeps looking for unicorns when all he sees is horses.”
You're talking about Simon's new channel aren't you?
@@ilajoie3 at the rate he starts new channels, probably lol
Err... Didn't we all think that in that moment? 😕
I mean, to be fair, it wasn't really about why bringing dinosaurs back specifically was a bad idea. It was more a commentary on corporate hubris and greed.
If it were possible, I would absolutely go to a living dinosaur park.
According to rumors it is in Wuppertal, Germany, behind 9m of concrete in an underground room/bunker in an old building. I work in Wuppertal and I have been in that building during "introductory week". I can say, I got a very strange feeling- even before I knew what was said about it. Something is there. Search for "Konsumgenossenschaft Vorwärts" Wuppertal. The building has an interesting history and it is beautifully restored.
The place with the funny lookin air train...
Out of context Simon quote: "I mean, they were probably killed. Good!"
The cave of cars is in north Wales: they were in a scrapyard and collapsed into a sinkhole. The most readily identifiable one is the light blue Ford Cortina estate in the centre, which didn't enter production until 1965 so clearly wasn't looted by the Nazis.
Sounds tres cool.
If the Soviet had the room, and the Nazi's grabbed it, how did it end up in a Welsh cave in?
Simon was actually referring to a cache of cars in France discovered by a Belgian teacher. They were hidden in a Quary to prevent them from being seized by the Nazi armies. They were then abandoned and slowly rusted for 70 years. The pictures are pretty cool looking.
@@WeCanCos The picture shown in the video was clearly not that.
Allegedly
As unfortunate as it is that the room was destroyed, there's something very poetic about a beautiful piece of German art that was gifted to Russia was stolen by Nazis and destroyed by Soviets.
The guy in the suitcase in a bath tub in a London Flat was ruled a suicide by the coroner! It’s a fascinating story and absolutely ridiculous to be deemed suicide!
Sounds clinton-esque
Worked for MI5 or MI6 as well, iirc.
The clue as to who was involved is this: it was the police if the coroner ruled it suicide.
Yeah I was going to mention that it was somehow deemed suicide!
I think that the story might make either a decoding the unknown or casual criminalist episode too!
yup they said it was a sexual thing and he put himself in the suitcase and couldnt get out lol
Simon, why hasn’t the name of this venue been renamed WhistlerTube?
IKR 🤨😂
Ha...ha...ha

Probably because Simon is not qualified to do game theory, film theory and food theory themed video’s.😅🤔🧐
Do one on the missing Honjo Masamune katana stolen from Japan after WWII. It's a really fascinating story. (Yes, fellow Japan geeks, it was made by THAT Masamune). TL:DR, a lot of Japanese swords were taken as trophies by allied soldiers. One of them had incredible historical significance and belonged to the royal family for centuries. It has never been found and the Japanese royal family REALLY wants it back.
God, imagine finding that in your grandfathers attic and knowing what it actually is, how would you even get started returning something that incredible?
@@nuru666 Well, if you've ever wanted to be a national hero...
I've often suspected that whoever stole Masamune sold it to a private collector who has kept it very secret.
Love the episode as always! This and Casual Criminalist are my absolute favorite podcasts!
In regards to the White Collar stuff (because I love that show too) They had an amber music box that was apparently taken from the amber room.. the music box lead to the German Submarine full of art that yes, Mozzie and Neal stole... the art, not the sub.
YES! Michael Chrichton call-out. Thank you for crediting Jurassic Park to him, one of my favorite authors, instead of just focusing on the film :D Ok so maybe it was like.. 3 seconds of the video, but Chrichton doesn't get enough coverage or respect I feel.
Watched the newest movie yesterday: it was unbelievably shitty. Read the original book over 20 years ago: it was great. 😊
If it wasn't destroyed - and I'm convinced it was - then it's in the tightly-clenched hands of one or more private collectors, as is so much stolen art.
Or in some Swiss bank.... Alegegly...
Do one on the missing SS rings and daggers. Both were minted and forged out to 1 million, I believe. Only a couple of hundred were ever issued out. When the kornberg castle was abandoned , they disappeared, like the amber room did.
I think you mean Königsberg.
Say please.
Hopefully, they were melted down and made into something useful.
I'm trying to cool it on the Nazi front right now XD
Probably in Latin America
Linseed oil is the medium for oil paint because it hardens with time. The amber wasn't molten, but attached to a panel with linseed oil.
Actually the "consultant" case you mention - guy was locked (actual padlock) folded in half in a bag and they ruled it a suicide.
Yup, sure, he managed to lock himself inside a bag with the padlock on the outside, folded in half, and killed himself.
Just proves he was clevererer-er than the investigators....
There's actually a case like this in a detective manga somewhere. IIRC, escape artist wanted to claim insurance for his family while framing his relative or former friend for murder, so he pulled a reverse-escape trick and deposited his body in a big trunk into said friend's hotel room. He locked the trunk from the inside by using magnets to pull the clasps, then used a piano wire with a special knot to lock the padlock. The knot untangled after doing its job, allowing him to pull the piano wire in. He then used the piano wire to strangle himself and leave a mark (and the wire) around his neck. However, he actually killed himself by dissolving dry ice in his own mouth, causing CO2 poisoning. I think the story was inspired by this real life event.
I actually wrote a paper on this subject when I was working on my Master's degree. I read the book you mentioned, too, lol! It's well written, but there was always one thing that bothered me about the Destroyed By Bombing hypothesis. Amber has a very strong, distinctive incense scent when burned. If THAT MUCH amber had burned, the whole area would have smelled at least a bit like incense for quite awhile. I read newspaper articles and primary sources, but never found any mention of such a scent. It's not conclusive, obviously, but it's enough that I think the panels are either still hidden or were stolen from the museum and broken down to be sold piece by piece over the years. Amber is found naturally in that region, so someone selling small, or even moderately sized, lots of amber pieces wouldn't be extraordinary.
If your city is getting bombed and you're losing the war, you ain't noticing a strange smell. Especially over all the other strange smells of war.
@@Zyo117 Actually, since Amber incense is used frequently in religious services, and less than a teaspoonful of it is enough to be detected in an entire church, I think it WOULD be something people would notice. That area is heavily Christian, and the people would be thinking about heaven and hell quite a bit under those circumstances. Having said that, this is part of why it's a hypothesis. I have no concrete evidence one way or the other. You could be correct. I could be correct. There's just no way to be sure unless the panels, or pieces thereof, are actually discovered.
Given that amber is flammable, its pretty likely the room was destroyed in the bombing/fire of the castle.
Then there should have been loads of gold. Not much, given that it is thin plated, but there should have been something.
@@SonjaHamburg nah it’s a part of the biggest myth. The whole thing being all the missing gold from Russia Poland France Belgium etc. Hence why the missing train (carrying said gold) is the biggest mystery but it’s a very key factor
Plot twist: the obsessive doctor faked his family’s death, started an energy company, hid the Amber room while killing anyone who got close to finding it and over 100 years later had his grandchildren reintroduce the original Amber room as a “reproduction” and gift it where it was supposed to be all along. Some badass 4D chess there lol.
Thanks for reactivating this! It's my favorite podcast, and I went to listen to it yesterday, and it was gone from Spotify, and I was terribly sad.
I love these episodes of The Casual Unknown.
First time commenting on a video, but I had to after learning that Simon is a fellow White Collar fan. That is also how I knew about the Amber Room. What Simon is talking about is the plot to season two where there is a music box allegedly from the Amber Room that holds the key to finding a sunken Nazi submarine full of treasure. Thank you Simon for all you do from a long time Whistler fan, and big White Collar fan!
White Collar! Thank you Simon, I've been trying to remember the name of that show for year's now!

FINALLY, Decoding the Unknown and Brain Blaze have been in a DROUGHT over the last 2 weeks, of course I follow all of Simons other stuff but these are the two best.
Well done Jen!! Outstanding work on this one!
YES SIMON!!!!
White Collar is an amazing show I feel like not enough people have seen
What is the best, least predictable episode to start with? I tried S01E01 and 2 and they were dreadfully boring and lazy.
They weren't hunting for the Amber Room, they were looking for an amber music box which was reportedly from the Amber Room. The music box was a key plot point of the first three seasons.
I think that whenever Simon voices someone from the past, they should always talk like he made them do in this episode, saying stuff like dude and bro.
The replica in St Petersburg is gorgeous, and, before the recent Ukraine war, thousands of western tourists went through it every day,. It is quite large enough for hundreds to be in there at one time. You are not allowed to take photos in that room, but there were plenty for sale.
Do they sell earrings looking like the stuff? An amber panel earring would be soooo dope...
Visited St. Petersburg in '96 and saw the reproduction amber room. A bit baroque for my tastes, but amazing.
I come for Simon, I stay for Jen. Great episode
I tried to make my own amber room and thought I'd put rare stones and amber on boards and suspend them on the walls of my extra bedroom. The 3 x 3 foot board cost almost $1000 (pretty much every known gem with some bits of gold and silver flakes) and was so heavy it could only be put on the floor side of the wall. Not having tens of thousands or massive technology to suspend the heavy panels, I gave up. The prototype panel with some bright lights remains very impressive to guests.
An Italian, I'm repatriating the Mona Lisa to my family room. The room had to have been astonishing, and the history is as well !
I happened to be living in St. Petersburg when the reproduction was opened in time for the city's Tricentennial celebrations, so I was among the first people, and definitely one of the first Americans, to see it. It is AMAZING! Sure, it's very OTT, but it's SO OTT that it's like a Klimt painting. It all comes together into a lovely, glittery, complete masterpiece.

I first heard about the Amber Room from an Imagination Theatre two part audio drama that dealt with a fictionalized search for it. I'm wanting to say that they were looking out in jungle in Argentina or something like that. It's been awhile since I listened to it. It was a good story, I thought anyway.

And White Collar is a good show.
Funniest episode so far, love it 😍
I watched all of it (White Collar) really good show. Sadly the actor who plays Mozzy, has recently passed away.
If the hundred years rule still hold true by then, 2045 will be an amazing year for “finding” lost treasure in Europe.
I am so glad I chose to save this to watch after the casual criminalist episode 😬
I've always gone with the assumption that it was destroyed during the war, but part of me will always suspect that it's actually somewhere in the Kremlin and has been for a while.
The room is absolutely gorgeous, I visited the remade version of it in 2011.
I work in jewelry design, and artificial amber can be extremely convincing. There is a test you have to in order to determine if it is real or not. Get a needle or a pin and heat it up very hot in a flame. Then press it into the stone. If it smells like petrochemicals, then you have plastic resin. If it smells like pine trees, then you have genuine amber. The plastic will also melt much more easily, and the amber is more heat resistant. If someone is trying to sell you amber, and they balk when you ask to do a pin test, RUN! They are out to cheat you.
I was once on the Portobello Road antiques market, and came across what I recognised as a 1930s phenolic plastic ash-tray: I had seen a picture of one just like it in a book on Bakelite. It had one or two cigarette burns from where someone had left a burning cigarette on it for too long, but I was still interested. The stall-holder told me it was "an amber Jewellery-box: unfortunately some clown has been using it as an ash-tray", and quoted a vastly inflated price for it. There followed an argument in which I insisted it was a phenolic plastic ash-tray and worth far less, but he wouldn't back down. I asked him if he'd tried sticking a heated pin in it, and he replied "yes". "And you got a kind of resiny smell?" "no, amber". I gave up and walked away...
If someone actually found those panels in an attic somewhere, I wonder what they could get for them at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.
“Best I can do is 50 bucks…”
Knowing fact boy is a white collar fan has made my entire life complete
Just wanted to say the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg website has a picture of the Amber Room partially reassembled in Konigsberg Castle, minus the entablature and upper sections as the ceiling of the room that housed it then was quite lower than the Amber Room itself.

You should watch expedition unknown! They covered this and it’s a good show too.
White collar is a great show!
the amber room is priceless, anyone that tries to price it is oblivious to market value..
Josh Gates & Expedition Unknown (which is Travel Channel/Discovery, not History Channel, that feels important to mention lol) does an interesting episode on this, and at least once a season, Josh goes rooting around in abandoned German bunkers looking for stuff with local historians/archaeologists/explorers. It’s a fun show, highly recommend! A+ use of gratuitous slowmo lol and they really do look into interesting theories. It’s not like PBS quality or anything but it’s fun and all these historians, explorers, archaeologists, and amateurs seem to have a great time being interviewed about their theories.
and Josh is never dismissive, he keeps and open mind. I love it when he finds stuff like old coins.
Jen was on fire today!
I didn't know I had a whole room dedicated to me!
(I'm writing this before knowing what exactly the Amber Room is.... hopefully, I don't regret that....)
Good video 👍
I love White Collar. If memory serves the amber room is referenced via the music box (which holds the secret to where the nazi treasure sub is) being from the amber room.
That ship with the 9000 people dying had so many people on it because it was one of the last big efforts of evacuating civilians from the area as the soviets were closing in at the very end of the war. They had told people not to evacuate for ages and at that point all available ships, military or not, were doing runs over to mainland Germany. One of my grandparents was on the ship right before the one that sunk with the 9000 from what they’ve told me. Children froze in the water trying to get to the ships because they had to walk through the water as the big ships couldn’t dock anywhere and time was running out. Really a shame of how many civilians died there because they had to get out asap. War is a losing time for civilians all around.
I swear half of my time on RUclips is spent watching Simons different channels.
