    Is Environmental Science still a career in demand putting into consideration the current state of the economy in terms of unemployment and the effects of covid-19 (retrenchments)

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад +6

      Hi. With the current state of our economy due to the pandemic, I honestly can't give a straight answer. What I have come to realise is, plenty opportunities are available in this field. However, you need to have postgraduate qualifications. For example, if you are/planning to go in this field you need to atleast get to Master's level

    Thank you so much for this video. I was actually thinking of studying Environmental Science after I've graduated for Urban and Regional Planning because I believe there's a link between these fields.
    Which Universities are more likely get a job after studying Environmental Science?

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад

      Thank you for watching!🙂
      If it's something you like and are interested in, then definitely go for it. I can't say I know which university gives an advantage because different universities offer different variations of this qualification. For example, Unisa, UP etc offer qualifications in Env.c conservation, Env. management and the likes at undergrad levels. While other institutions only have options for postgraduate degrees.
      My advice is to find which field within Environmental Sciences you are most interested in and take it from there. That should help you find the right institution.
      Hope that helps🙂

    Hi Katlego. I have completed my BA environmental management degree and struggling to find a job. Do you have any advice for me to get into the field? Most jobs require a BSc, so I'm already limited.

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад +2

      Honestly, I would advice that you still apply to jobs even if they say BSc. This is because even though your qualification may say BA, environmental management is still a discipline within the environmental sciences field.
      Also, you are looking to further your studies I would suggest an honours degree in the science faculty. You would qualify since you have an undergraduate degree and I think it may solve the BA / BSc limitation.

    GOOD EVENING AUS KATLEGO, I DID MY HONOURS DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND GEOGRAPHY 6 YEARS AGO HOWEVER DUE TO NOT GETTING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES RELATED OPPORTUNITIES, I ENDED UP GOING INTO TEACHING WHICH I THINK IT IS LIMITING ME AND I CANNOT UTILIZE MY SKILLS. IVE BEEN TRYING TO CHECK MANY COMPANIES THT CAN OFFER ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE MY ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES CAREER AND GAIN MORE EXPERIENCE BUT NO LUCK. MAJORED WITH GIS AND REMOTE SENSING, ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS, MY RESEARCH TOPIC WAS "IMPACT OF MINING ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITY" CAN YOU PLEASE ADVICE ON WHICH STEPS I SHOULD TAKE TO BE ABLE TO REACH OUT TO ENVIRONMENTAL COMPANIES?

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад

      Hello Tshepo
      It is a good thing that you have teaching experience. That is good experience. Do not limit yourself to what you studied, do just go out and look for jobs in those fields. The good thing about having a degree and Honours is that you are able to learn something new. There are so many other opportunities you can look into. For example, SANPARKS, SAEON, SANBI, SAAIB. So the things were they tell you it's about conservation or botany, you should also look into that. The bottom like is don't limit yourself look for opportunities beyond what you studied (of course they must be related but they don't necessarily have to be exactly what you studied). I hope this helps

    hello i just need to ask few questions i hope you don't mind me asking.. lately ive been having an interest in doing environmental management . i have a degree in Public Admin do you think it would be wise to just go straight to Honors degree. or i should just start the degree from undergrad

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад +1

      Hey. That will depend on the institution you are interested in attending. Remember for certain postgraduate courses you need to have prerequisite courses that you've done in undergrad in order to qualify. I personally do not see a problem with going straight to Honours for an environmental management degree, but speak to the admin at your institution to find out if you qualify.

    • @sinazocita1350
      @sinazocita1350 3 года назад

      Already checked with Unisa i qualify to do Bachelor of Arts Honors: just wanted to find out if I got straight to honors will I get as much knowledge that can help me grow in Environmental career

    • @KatlegoMakgopo
      @KatlegoMakgopo  3 года назад

      If that's what they say I would guess it means in order to qualify for a postgraduate degree in the sciences you would need to do undergrad science courses.
      However, in terms of knowledge I really can't say because it depends on the area you want to focus on in Env. Sciences. But it's all up to you really. Yes, it's nice knowing a whole bunch of things from undergrad but you may need to be realistic in terms of whether you are prepared to start over with a new undergrad degree.
