"You can have a mentor that doesn't know that they're mentoring you." Hello, from your newest mentee! Thanks for being so readily available to be hyjacked, Chris. I appreciate you and the wisdom and perspective you never fail to bring to the table. Keep it up! Kim
The Futur around minute 2. Chris says "prove them wrong, we should make a tshirt" so i automatically went online to search if someone had done it and voila! Someone did do shirts with that phrase. Even the composition and font were very similar.
I didn't even watch the video yet and I know this is going to be worth my time. As someone raised in a traditional, asian family, I've had to go through these kinds of obstacles in my life. Quite frankly, I'm still going through it today. It's not easy taking the non-traditional path, but what keeps me going is the fact that I know that it's worth the struggle. Glad to know I'm not alone.
You're not alone. I try to think of my many cousins who are going down that "Professional route" and are completely unhappy with their choices. They're busy living the life someone else expected of them.
I am so glad that I watch this, because I have been going through a horrible state of self doubt after seeing so many designer create amazing stuff and feel like I cannot do the same, but after seeing and hearing this, I know now I need to try focus on what I want to do and where I want to go within the field of design.
This video really hit home. *I wish I could be a voice in her head, telling her she can achieve whatever she wants to achieve; learning Animation, 3D Design, Web Development etc.* I'm currently learning Product design, Set design and Sound design online.
Thank you so much for this video! My biggest struggle is my self confidence. I started studying a university program that was very wide and contained the basics in graphic design and web design. My goal back then was to become a web designer, but I found a new passion for graphic design instead. It kind of became an obsession to design completely random things and my mind was a shipwreck at one point because of all the ideas I had and the little time I had to turn them into something real. Although, it was one of the most stressful and also fun times in my life - but that's all it was. Basic and fun. Now I work as a graphic designer for an agency and I feel so confused. The passion and hunger for design is still there but I feel like I know -nothing-. I'm not an expert in design principles, I don't know the design language very well and I don't quite keep up with things at work which also makes me feel like I have nothing to do in the business. I stress myself because my tasks takes too much of the budget and it doesn't feel good. I do my very best every day, I take notes and look things up when I get home, I even started reading student books again just to "catch up". But I still doubt myself - all the time. I also compare myself with others who seem to know it all. I try to tell myself to stop overthinking because I know that I am new to the graphic design world, but I don't know how to start to become a "real" graphic designer. Have you met other designers who struggle with self confidence and do you have any kind of advice on how to get over it?
This was published 2 years ago but this is still a great learning material for the next generation graphic designers. Thanks for sharing your wisdom Chris Do. God bless you.
Beautiful conversation. The way you honored the emotion of the young woman and what she was struggling with touched my heart. You are so much more than a designer Chris. You are thoughtful and insightful and you bring all your experience to bear to help others struggling to just get their passion out.
i've posted in one of your old vids regarding career shift, and i've finally left my current work last week to pursue design. a week after that and i'm already down, unemployed. i feel anxious after i took this risk, and i only have a runway of 2 mos. so i'm pressured to find another job. this transition is tough, i must say. it fcks up my psyche a bit. i've finally jumped off that cliff and left that comfort zone where i've kept myself safe for like 6+ yrs. i'm still falling down right now, i dunno if i'll grow wings or hit the ground flat. not feeling this holiday spirit at all. lol. what i want to do right now is to just breathe and relax. i've set a time frame when to snap out of this, though. but for now i want to do nothing at all
You're so wise, such an inspiration with the way you think, you're real with the world too. I can't relate to anyone as much as I do to you: You're my mentor Chris!
Thank you Chris! So often I get overwhelmed by the mountain and trying to figure out how to get to the mountain that I start criticising myself because I'm not near the peak. I have to remind myself to make things smaller and simpler and trust that i'll get there in time. I struggle a lot with confidence in my work and in my life. This was a great reminder that it comes from a calm place and that I shouldn't let others define my worth.
I'm literally in tears because of just knowing that there are others out there that have walked the same dark path that I walk on. It motivates me in such a way that I feel like it's possible to be on top of the world.
One quote I've adopted. *Seek Criticism not praise.* That helps in so many ways, take your *self criticism* for example, as you're so close to whatever you've created, you see what's "wrong" so you think everyone else sees it. So you ask, expecting that person to see exactly that and they completely miss it, mention something else or see nothing to critic...So here's another piece of observation. *Have little to no expectation,* that's getting into the realm of stoicism, but life gets a lot simpler.
I seriously teared up just now in your conversation with Ruby. The feelings and thought are very similar to my own situation and emotions. That internal voice is the bane of my creativity at times. It get so hard to over come it. I found this channel googling about setting rates for artwork, and it is truly one of the best things ive ever found online. I loved the statement about “hijacking your mentors “ because i have definitely made you my mentor. Thank you Chris.
So many passionate designers (esp children of Asian parents) have to deal with these struggles as designers. Totally empathise with these young ones going through this - Such a important and incredible message here.
I've been making an experiement with myself, getting away of every video or content from you guys and now i came back and now i can tell OH MY GOD! The wisdom that your share is like a new reality, everytime i revisited a video i watched several months ago i fell in total peace, no just with myself but with everything around me. Now in 2019, i overcomed huge things and met awesome people and professionals but there's something that happens every time i saw, read or listen your content, i get up and recover every piece of my exploded brain. Love you guys, you ROCK! I wish to meet you someday and i'll make it.
You changed my life tonight, Chris. You did. I am 39 and an aspiring web and graphic designer. I don't sleep at night to study designs. No one believes me and it made me so sad. I know I'm gonna be a designer. Thank you so much.
I'm at the point in my life that I know all of the this, but I wished I had someone like Chris earlier on so I would have gotten here faster. Young people, you're lucky to have found this channel and Chris FOR FREE. Be your own compass-- what a great quote
Hey guys, I just want to thank you for sharing your insights with those seeking more. I pray to never stop seeking, not because of discontentment, but because deeper understanding is always around the corner if we seek to find it. I'm 35 years old which is probably elderly to the general student audience here. But we are all students. We are all teachers. And much can be learned from one another, each and every one. It took me into my 30's to take the step I missed looking ago. The step to discovering who I am at my core and what it is that I am most excruciatingly passionate about. It was not what I expected at first, but it was there all along hidden in plain sight. Just wanted to let anyone who may struggle with this that you're not alone. And whether you know from infancy what your dream is or you're decades late to the party, desperately grasping for a guiding whisper, you're here because you're purpose remains. Again, thank you for being so concise and insightful. By helping one person with one single inspirational message in this one particular video, you have already changed the world. With an audience of this capacity? Man, I think You may have just rocked the universe back into Nirvana. Peace and much love everyone
@The Futr This is the channel every person going into the creative industry should be aware of. You guys are doing something so big for aspiring creators, its incredible. I'll see you in 2017, Have a happy holiday to all your staff.
You've been hyjacked... :). Cannot thank you enough for not giving up because I have been watching your videos for weeks as I attempt to transition to a graphic design career. No prior experience, except art classes in school, but I know I have something. Great video!
i am soooo late in discovering you Chris. i probably lived under a rock (without knowing it) all my graphic design life being oblivious about THE CHRIS DO. i dont know why i tear up everytime i watch your videos. every single word that comes out from you is so personal and resonates in me in so many different levels. what you mentioned about people you dont even know can be your mentor? YOU are to ME now. thank goodness for the power of social media. ooh i have sooo many videos to catch up on. way back 6 years ago. but i have all the time now. A MASSIVE THANK YOU. 👍😍
Been watching your videos over the past couple of days. They have really helped re-think the way I do design. I have been designing since I was 12, without much of a focus. But now I realize it is a passion of mine and through these videos, I am slowly learning how to make this a reality. I also appreciate how you maintain an active presence on your social outlets. Design+Business+Humanity, this is what I have learnt. Thank you for your generous contribution to the world :')
Excellent advice, especially the part about letting your determination to prove your doubters wrong drive you to succeed, and then simply focus on doing well and giving back without thinking of the doubters anymore. I went through depression once due to hating my job, poor social life, and a failed relationship. Then I came across the saying "The best revenge is to live well," and this hit deep. I've pulled myself up much farther than I've ever been before, and people who once looked down on me now look up to me. However, I no longer think in terms of revenge or proving myself, I simply be all I can be and help people when I can, including some who used to scorn me. There you go, Internet, my life in a nutshell...
The Futur honestly, I feel like I have more hope in my self because what you said about how the opinions of others and the voice in our head ultimately controls our decisions and way of life is one of the truest thing I have ever heard. Currently I'm in high school and ever since I made the decision of wanting to do art/graphics as my career, the arguments with my parent about a stable future and the personal doubts of ever making it in the real world has destroyed any confidence I had in my abilities. But thanks to this dopeass video I know we all share a same experience.
I was hesitant to watch this when I saw it pop up in my feed, but I'm glad I did. Craving validation from others when I do design work is one of my BIGGEST problems. I think it has to do with creative work not being so easy to detach from; anything you make always has a part of you in it, and when putting it out there it feels like you're putting yourself on display to be judged. With time and experience you learn how to separate yourself from your work...but the journey to that point is rough, and it can seem like you'll never get there. Thanks for sharing this content, I really appreciate it.
The Futur More like it triggered an emotional response in a part of me that I try not to expose to the world. As you said in the video, we all have the negative voice in our head. We just have to start facing it and having a conversation with it, in an effort to gain some control over it.
So I'm not a designer but a Mercenary Blogger (mercenary sounds so much cooler than freelancer), and your channel has been incredibly helpful. Almost all of the business advice directly translates into things I do. Next time I hear one of my clients talk about needing design help, I'll send them your way.
The Futur i just found your videos and im mind blown, your discussion are so important because no one really speaks about the challenges of becoming a graphic designer and succeeding in it, im a black african male from south africa, i grew up in a community that didnt share any interest in creativity, so i had to be self motivated, thank you so much and keep it up the great work
Man, I did not expect to be personally attacked watching this XD. I'm still a student, and I really resonated with what the girl at 6:36 was saying. Your advice there was really something I needed to hear, especially right now. Well really, all the advice I've heard from these videos has been great. "Taking the first step is the hardest step." I really needed that! Thank you!
I can really relate to what the girl was saying in the video. My parents and I got in a argument today about me changing my career to something else because they said "graphic design is useless" and that really brought me down, and I actually cried because parents are there to support you no matter what. I just don't want to do something just for the money or this person say I should do it, I want be happy in the future going to work not sad. I just feel so pressurize.
just know that it's more important for you to do something true to yourself. your parents come from a different generation and didn't grow up with the internet. all the rules are being rewritten. all businesses need 3 things: a strong visual identity, a website and social media marketing. graphic design is well suited to meet these needs.
I love how relatable and insightful this is. :) Being that graphic design is an entrepreneurial/artistic career as opposed to the typical doctor/lawyer/engineer preference that runs in my family, it was a tough process confronting my parents about my decision to pursue graphic design. After showing them that I had a plan for the future and conveyed my passion for design, they started to become supportive of my decision. From what I've learned, other people's negative perceptions, especially those close to us, can be highly regarded; but in the end, it's our own mentality and decisions which dictates where we go.
Man. A lot of feelings (between parts 1 & 2). Someday, one of these days, I hope I get the chance to tell the story of how I made it and where I came from to get there. Inspiring story, Chris! P.S. Thank you for the mentorship-by-RUclips!
Chris, I just wanted to say I feel so lucky to have found your videos. I relate so much to you talking about how one day you just woke up and decided to change your life. I discovered my passion of videography when I was 16 and I decided to go all in on it when I turned 22, I literally dropped everything, nothing else mattered and I moved to London. Now I'm 24 I've been a freelance videographer for nearly two years and I've gone from no experience besides making RUclips videos in my bedroom, to having and working with clients like GQ Magazine, Gymshark, Rolls-Royce, The Face Magazine and more. I give a huge amount of credit to Gary Vee as I just had him in my ears 24/7 and developed an insane 18-hour day work ethic, self-awareness etc... BUT discovering your videos last week I feel set me onto a new "business" chapter that I didn't even know existed. You're a real educator, since discovering your videos last week I charge three times my normal rate. You know when you come across something or learn something new in life and you forget what you was like before you knew that thing etc. that's how I feel after watching and studying your videos. So thank you so much ❤️
These videos are so stimulating and helpful and encouraging, and this advice is inspiring. All the effort being put into the making of them is very much appreciated! Thanks a lot.
Great video. It addressed many issues I've faced last year and I can agree that the advice given definitely helps. One thing that helped me get over self doubt and the constant need for validation is to just fill up my schedule with things do. Back to back classes and work kept my mind focus on my goals. There was no time to wallow on thoughts such as whether I'll succeed or how will others perceive my work. Anytime I had downtime I would have a tendency to over think, so why not do something productive instead? It's hard but keep that momentum going everyone.
Thanks Chris I really appreciate your outlook, advice, and videos...amazing design content, always mixed with a lil special life lesson on the side...thankyou thank you keep up the great work
Explorer metaphor is great. I kind of learnt the same thing with tackling uphills on a mountain bike. Don't look at the top of the hill, but focus on what's in front of the front tire. Achieving the small goals gets you to your end goal.
Just what the doctor ordered. Thank you for this segment. I'm in the process still of killing the girl and unleashing the woman. It's been hard and is still taking a long time to do it, but talks like this really help remind me what my end goal is. Chris Do and the guys at The Blind and The Futur are my mentors!
Mr. Do what great words of wisdom this young man will never forget neither will I. I listen I take my part and work with it thank you so much for these with wonderful full of wisdom videos👏👍
Thank you for sharing so much truth. A turning point in my life was when I realized that work is a welcome refuge from my worries and troubles. I once thought that the positive stars had to align for me to concentrate and be productive. Not so!
I wish I chanced upon your channel before I started architecture school. This is so relevant. And I would’ve struggled so much less the past three years had I heard this advice first :)
Thank you so much for sharing these inspiring and educational videos. A coworker shared one of your other videos a few days ago and I've been watching and learning so much!
I like the Jim Rohn comment very much. Most times a few of my top 5 associates are online mentors. May sound funny, but it does make a tremendous difference. Throwing some appreciation your way. :)
I heard this powerful quote that "if you're trying to prove someone else wrong, you're subconsciously telling yourself their opinion of you matters more than your opinion of yourself", it really helped me so I hope it can be helpful to you guys as well. PS. Thank you Chris Do & TheFutur for secretly being my mentor ☺️
@@thefutur i know! keep it up for us :^) designing myself for fun, and i need to decide where i will go in my future, so these talks help me much to get an direction haha :D
Those intros man .... fire. Heard a lot about Jim Rohn but never got to watch one of his seminars from the start to the end. I personally prefer Bob Proctor but any advice is advice. Thank you for the free knowledge, as always. Happy Holidays!
I feel like i had to watch this over over again because everytime someone ask me what I am going to school for? And i tell them Graphic Design and then i get a side eye or the "uuhhhh" reaction that im not going to get good pay for it. 😶😶😶
I didn't know that to become a graphic designer is such a tabu. However, I have experienced it, too. I wanted, I have always wanted and still want, to become a graphic designer. My parents wanted me to become an architect, that what I have 30 unhappy years practised. Now I am emotionally and spiritually dead.
This is a great session! I feel like both people in this video a lot of the time. I agree with Chris, most of the time you are more focused on expectations that what you need to be doing. (I think I just mentor hijacked Chris, haha)
"You can have a mentor that doesn't know that they're mentoring you."
Hello, from your newest mentee! Thanks for being so readily available to be hyjacked, Chris. I appreciate you and the wisdom and perspective you never fail to bring to the table. Keep it up!

Kim Thuy Tu hi Kim. Welcome to the program. I'm here for you.
But wait... Now Chris knows that he's mentoring us

Happy holidays everyone. This most likely will be the last episode of the year before we return from the break.
Happy Holidays TF :)

Raymond Jaeger we are here for you. If you need help talking to your parents, tell them to call me.
It was deep, but I liked it alot. Very nice stuff!
Ramon Thompson awesome. Thanks Ramon. Glad you clicked and watched. Did the title scare you off a little?
The Futur More like it triggered an emotional response in a part of me that I try not to expose to the world. As you said in the video, we all have the negative voice in our head. We just have to start facing it and having a conversation with it, in an effort to gain some control over it.
Solid advice. Love coming back to this video
So I'm not a designer but a Mercenary Blogger (mercenary sounds so much cooler than freelancer), and your channel has been incredibly helpful. Almost all of the business advice directly translates into things I do. Next time I hear one of my clients talk about needing design help, I'll send them your way.
Thanks Steven. Appreciate it.
This video seriously helped me. Thank you, can't wait to watch upcoming ones ☺
The Futur i just found your videos and im mind blown, your discussion are so important because no one really speaks about the challenges of becoming a graphic designer and succeeding in it, im a black african male from south africa, i grew up in a community that didnt share any interest in creativity, so i had to be self motivated, thank you so much and keep it up the great work
Great video. Something everybody needs to hear regardless of career path. The positive route is the only key.
Zach Wood thanks Zach!
Thank you!
then again. you just hit the spot. thanks for the content. really apreciate you guys
Elegant , clear and wise .
I just feel so pressurize.
just know that it's more important for you to do something true to yourself. your parents come from a different generation and didn't grow up with the internet. all the rules are being rewritten.
all businesses need 3 things: a strong visual identity, a website and social media marketing. graphic design is well suited to meet these needs.
have them watch this video and discuss.
Thanks for the advice.
loved the last point about going into class and hearing what others have to say about your work. be honest with yourself
Bypetertran yes.
Really inspirational. I'm sometimes going through that 'too scared to start' phase myself, so this has been really helpful. Thanks!
glad it was for you.
Chris you are just amazing, thank you for all this insight into what it takes to become more confident - really appreciate it at this point in life 🙌
Hi Anna! thank you.
Loved this. Reality distortion field on!
From what I've learned, other people's negative perceptions, especially those close to us, can be highly regarded; but in the end, it's our own mentality and decisions which dictates where we go.
perfectly said Kelsy.
Thanks, exactly what I needed to hear today. appreciate all the positive energy and wisdom you share Chris 👍👍
Stay strong!
Thank you Chris, this is a much needed conversation to overcome my doubt.
Man. A lot of feelings (between parts 1 & 2).
Someday, one of these days, I hope I get the chance to tell the story of how I made it and where I came from to get there. Inspiring story, Chris!
P.S. Thank you for the mentorship-by-RUclips!
You’re very welcome.
Chris Do has become one of my mentors over time.
glad to have you Lorenzon
You are officially my newest mentor, sir ! Glad I found this channel on my YT.
I would like to see the full version if it is possible, I can deeply relate to this. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Inspiration at its finest quality.
Cas Magazine thanks Cas.
I love listening to these videos while I work on my school design work. It really helps me focus.
So thank you so much ❤️
Thanks for sharing. Welcome to the Futur you.
@@thefutur Okay, that sounds awesome haha
These videos are so stimulating and helpful and encouraging, and this advice is inspiring.
All the effort being put into the making of them is very much appreciated! Thanks a lot.
Samhitha Kottamasu thank you. I appreciate you saying so.
Right! Focus your mind on the things you can change.
Thumbs up for saying "It's addictive"
Not so!
ProfessorBRB glad you found your way.
I wish I chanced upon your channel before I started architecture school. This is so relevant. And I would’ve struggled so much less the past three years had I heard this advice first :)
Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing these inspiring and educational videos. A coworker shared one of your other videos a few days ago and I've been watching and learning so much!

Self Awareness. Know who you are, why you do it, and what to do.
Love this piece!
Alexander Prasetya perfect.
You are my mentor Cris Do. I am so happy I found you. The Futur is amazing! Thank YOU
hello and welcome
I like the Jim Rohn comment very much. Most times a few of my top 5 associates are online mentors. May sound funny, but it does make a tremendous difference. Throwing some appreciation your way. :)
I have no idea how I stumbled onto this video (or channel) but this dudes speak some powerful truths.
You’re very welcome
These talks are "legitness"! haha thanks man
Hope you’re right.
@@thefutur i know! keep it up for us :^) designing myself for fun, and i need to decide where i will go in my future, so these talks help me much to get an direction haha :D

You're such an inspiration Chris, thank you for this videos
thank you!
Great tips that transforms your career choice and personal development 😊
Those intros man .... fire.
Heard a lot about Jim Rohn but never got to watch one of his seminars from the start to the end. I personally prefer Bob Proctor but any advice is advice.
Thank you for the free knowledge, as always.
Happy Holidays!
ARM Cezar check out link in the description.
Thanks!
LOVED this disscussion
Great thoughts Chris. Wish to learn more from you. ^_^
I wish I saw this 5 yrs ago, thx 👌
I feel like i had to watch this over over again because everytime someone ask me what I am going to school for? And i tell them Graphic Design and then i get a side eye or the "uuhhhh" reaction that im not going to get good pay for it. 😶😶😶
I love that highjack your mentor thing. I hijacked you! lol. Great intro btw Chris!
Eric Martinez thanks E. we are getting better every time.
chrisdo is such a good speaker.
Appreciate it.
Thank you for sharing. It helps a lot.
you're welcome
This is the best channel on RUclips
Thank you
I'm in love with Chris.
👋
Very good advice here :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!

The futur is our mentor🙏🏾🤝
Thanks Chris!
Rayo Nathan you're welcome.
Powerful x 2!
Thanks for sharing!
you bet.
This is a great session! I feel like both people in this video a lot of the time. I agree with Chris, most of the time you are more focused on expectations that what you need to be doing. (I think I just mentor hijacked Chris, haha)
Hi Martha. Glad to be your unofficial mentor.
