I have always been taught table manners. Not necessarily etiquette, but always good manners. We don't think it's rude to say "pass the salt please" and afterward, "thank you". We don't think it's rude, when at the bar to say, "I'd like a beer please". Though you would say, "can I get a beer" that is also correct. My own daughter says it like you also, yet I didn't teach her that. I have always just said, "I'll have a beer please" or "I'd like a beer please". Please & Thank You, Please & Thank You were drilled into our heads. My native tongue is English but I'm always learning new things! Great video! :)

You are right in thinking that your friend is rude. Manners apply to all cultures, so in Spanish one should also say, could I have some bread, please. Podría darme pan, por favor? Or, tenga la bondad de dejarme pasar. So, don’t let them convince you that being rude is normal, even among friends and family.

You sound so much like Eddie Izzard. You must be a great fan.

Spanish people I know are very direct, and it really sounds horribly rude when converted to English. However, one new English construction I really hate, which came from America, is “can I get”. Can I have, please, is correct, the American demand is aggressive and rude. Today’s young people know no better.
