Phil - You are THE MAN!! I am a carpenter, a painter, and a beginner luthier. I use painter's tape almost daily!! It never crossed my mind to use it like this. GENIOUS!!! I HATE peeling velcro off the back of pedals! This is one of the 983, 416 reasons I will watch every minute of every video you ever make.
The painters tape & heat gun is a great idea. I have pulled a few stickers off the back of some pedals removing the velcro before. I wish I would have done it this way with the tape. One issue I have with boss pedals is the velcro doesn't stick very well to the rubber backing when moving or removing the pedals.
A little expensive for the 2 kits, but wow does it clean up your pedal mess. Greatdemo, Phil, and that painter's tape trick along with the heated velcro strip made this video 10 times better. Thanks!
Phil, you are an inspirational and educational guru! Love to watch your videos whilst at work as they help me get through the day much easier and the fact that I learn so much too is a great benefit. I'm surprised you are not around the 1M subscriber figure because you should be for the content you put out and the positive and helpful attitude you have. Thanks Phil.
I like your idea on painter's tape...really good idea. I will challenge you on the D'Addario kit and the solderless cables. Solderless cables just don't last - specifically if you are moving that board around a lot with gigging, etc. Just say no to solderless cables.
Bonus painter's tape function: you can also use it to reduce the amount of grab from the velcro (just place it over the velcro, but leave a little bit showing). I do this when reorganizing my board or playing around with lots pedals for an afternoon. Once I get a setup I like, I'll pull the painters tape off and fully secure the pedals to the board. Doing this can also save the loop side of the velcro from wear and quite frankly, the modern hook and loop stuff is pretty darn strong and kind of annoying to work with sometimes.
As always, great info. Been waiting for the right size pedal board for the last couple of years. Glad I waited. This is perfect for me! And love the painter tape tip. Brilliant. Thanks Phil.
Phil more knowledge is always welcome. I have not advanced to the point of buying pedals.I use a Spark 40 but when I get that dream amp I will refer to this video.
Great idea with the painters tape! I've never been able to bring myself to put velcro on my pedals, but this I can do! lol I'm always changing my mind how I want my pedal board so this is the perfect solution for me, or anyone else with commitment issues. Love it!
Amazing tip with the painters tape!!! But folks - please, please don’t use solderless cables. I have had to replace so many cables for customers that used them. Ultimately they had to ditch them because of sound issues, bad grounds, not knowing what was actually bad with one or multiple cables, etc. For what it’s worth, just ask Dave Friedman. It’s not expensive to have your own custom patch cables made with far better wire and components. 🤘🏼
Hey Phil! Great video and great timing. I'm in the process of building a pedalboard myself at the moment. The painters tape tip was fucking genius!! Keep up the great work and thanks again for all you do for us!
Alright Phil, couldn't have posted this like a month ago ;)? First time putting a board together, I watched your old video, but was having a hell of a time adhering my Boss pedals to the board because I couldn't get the Velcro to adhere to the rubber backing. I finally bit the bullet and just pulled off the rubber backing (also ended up removing the labels), because I didn't even think of using the painter's tape! Not that I plan on re-selling the pedals any time soon... Thanks for your videos Phil, your viewers really appreciate them!
Thank you so much for that brilliant idea! I’m OCD with my equipment, and I definitely will use the painter’s tape to protect the pedals. Couldn’t come at a better time…just getting started with my pedal board!
..... The painters tape idea! thank you for that tip. i really hate the idea of removing the rubber from the bottom of the pedal. I'm 100% going to try this, thank you very much. Also the Board actually does seem awesome
Nice! I have so much painters tape. Heat gun is genius. Such a great tip, thx. Would have also been nice to hear what makes each of those pedals the most special pedals ever, but I do appreciate the short format
Thanks. This looks like a product for those who are not very handy or lazy. So it might be useful for myself. What I also found useful, as an aside, was the cable end connection. I have a Fender 10' guitar cable with a bad end. Looks like this is a way to easily replace it with no soldering.
Cheers Phil. More gear I don't need but want and will probably buy 🤣🤣 seriously good board solution way more practical than what I currently have which is a couple of pedal train boards in different sizes. And the painters tape - what a great idea - many thanks
freaking love the painters tape idea. Hope everyone I ever buy pedals from in the future see this as well. =) One question, what do you do if there is rubber on the bottom? The velcro definitely doesn't stick. thanks.
That's a really cool idea for a board. Really allows you to customize it to the exact size you need, which should alleviate a lot of the hassle when building a board. On a related note, have you ever taken a look at the Schmidt Array boards? I just picked up an SA750XDM_wx and I'm pretty confident that it's going to be my main board for the rest of my life. Really awesome feature set.
What kind of painters tape do you use that actually adheres to pedals for any amount of time? I've tried all kinds and just can't get that kind of stick.
I was looking to build a new board, and these are perfect! The problem I now have is, do I get the small one, put my effects on it and go 4-cable through the effects loop, or do I get the big one and just put all my pedals on it?
I use a very small pedal board. That is the only one so far that I like better than my '1X6 and drywall screws'!! 8) The 'painters tape and heat gun are great idea's too!! Thanks Phil!! 8) --gary
I've been doing it like this ever since you died us years ago Phil!!! Love the expanda-board! By the way if they don't come with a bag, I suggest checking out the road winner series pedal bags for the electro harmonics pedal bags… they're cheap and work great and I'm sure these will fit any size! 🤘🎸😎
Hey Phil. Looking for a Vid on fixing a sticky neck. especially after playing and your hands get sweaty.. what is your solution? 3m pad? 0000 steelwool? 1000G sandpaper? I am concerned about taking off TOO much finish and expose the neck to moisture, etc. 2017 Tele Elite. and a 2017 Strat Elite. Help.
I'm not convinced yet that Velcro will keep power supplies attached on the bottom of the board for long, especially when it is being carried around a lot. More secure options for mounting them would be nice. Good job on the video though, Phil!
Great video Phil. While I like Dadario products in general, I strongly feel that the price is way too high for a product that the end user has to assemble.
Wow I never ever ever thought of that But I think I removed the rubber off of a boss pedal as a teenager. It was a mess and the flat bottom doesn’t stick out farther than the sides so the Velcro doesn’t stick perfectly..
You would think after all of these years and other advancements that everyone would agree to a standard way of mounting pedals to pedalboards. A built in feature at the center of the pedal that lets you bolt it down to a board.
Hi Phillip, love your upgrade videos but I would love to know if I supply all the parts what would you charge strictly for labor I have a no name guitar and I wanna make it something special ... This guitar is very important to me and has not value to me except for sentimental value in would do it myself but I dont wanna mess anything up... I would love for you to do the upgrades because you are very particular about your work.... Thank you for reading this is hope to hear back from you
Anyone watching this video and interested in the solderless patch cable kit. The one used here was like $75 which to me is absurd for what it is. I bought a similar set on Amazon for $35 by Kurrent Electric. Don't know anything about the brand but I do know this....the cables went together in seconds and have not caused any issues. You can buy 2 of those kits for the cost of a single D'addario one
They sent them out for months, but asked a lot of channels to hold off until they actually had them because of supply chain issues March 1st was the first day most of us could share this.
These hints and tricks, tied into an honest review is why you should never stop doing what you do. Thank you!
Thank you Johnny
Always nice to have an adjustable pedalboard 👍🏻
I needed this video about a decade ago Phil! 🤣
The blue tape over the label… BRILLIANT!! Damn it… seems so obvious now
The painters tape & heat gun is a great idea. I have pulled a few stickers off the back of some pedals removing the velcro before. I wish I would have done it this way with the tape. One issue I have with boss pedals is the velcro doesn't stick very well to the rubber backing when moving or removing the pedals.
Pro-tip, remove the base plate of your Boss pedal, reverse it and re-screw it back on. Voila, a flat metal surface to affix your velcro to!
Phil McKnight with all the good tips and tricks. I always trust that he's done the research and just has the way to do it 👍
I bought the bigger board this morning!!! I’m stoked man
Oh no... This is going to start an obsession with pedals... It looks so neat and clean....
A little expensive for the 2 kits, but wow does it clean up your pedal mess. Greatdemo, Phil, and that painter's tape trick along with the heated velcro strip made this video 10 times better. Thanks!
this is a compliment,I wish I was a geeky guitar genuis like you, that painters tape is great
Very appreciated and helpful. I’ve been looking for a pedalboard that not only work, but is less expensive without being cheap. This looks perfect!
Another great video Phil. Like the painters tape idea, and used your hairdryer recommendation for a while. Keep up the great work 👍🎸
That's awesome , thanks Phil , I always enjoy and learn from your videos !!
People are so precious about things they step on.
I like your idea on painter's tape...really good idea. I will challenge you on the D'Addario kit and the solderless cables. Solderless cables just don't last - specifically if you are moving that board around a lot with gigging, etc. Just say no to solderless cables.

Thanks for making this video. First time I heard about the painter’s tape.
That's sweet Phil. The board is awesome but the use of painters tape is simple and clever.
Thank you Donald
As always, great info. Been waiting for the right size pedal board for the last couple of years. Glad I waited. This is perfect for me! And love the painter tape tip. Brilliant. Thanks Phil.
Love the painters tape tip! One more reason these videos are always great!
I have been doing the blue painters tape thing for many years great video
Phil, you are a freaking genius. I change my board all the time. The painters tape is such a good idea.
Thanks a million for this tip Phillip!!
Thanks for that painter's tape & heat gun idea! SWEET!
Phil more knowledge is always welcome. I have not advanced to the point of buying pedals.I use a Spark 40 but when I get that dream amp I will refer to this video.
this was everything i needed to know about mounting pedals that i didnt know i needed to know XD cant wait to get a board built now
I could use that shorty for my vocal pedal set up, saved to my wish list. Neat trick with the painters tape too.
Love the heat gun and tape trick Phil. Thanks for that, it will be used by me for sure. KYG
Good review. This will most likely be my next pedal board. The cable accessory jawn is great too. Thanks.
Great idea with the painters tape! I've never been able to bring myself to put velcro on my pedals, but this I can do! lol I'm always changing my mind how I want my pedal board so this is the perfect solution for me, or anyone else with commitment issues. Love it!
Painter's Tape! Brilliant! Never seen this before (and I am as old as dirt lol) - thank you for that tip. :)
Just picked on up today. I Love it.
Seriously considering the small board for my first pedal board in 20 years. Great review!
Amazing tip with the painters tape!!! But folks - please, please don’t use solderless cables. I have had to replace so many cables for customers that used them. Grat tip!! Just bought a pedalboard for home and will use the tip for sure
I used painters tape to put a couple of marks on my fiddle. I took one off and I'm still using one as a crutch
Great idea with the painters tape. Definitely going to look into the expandable pedal board 🎸
I have that same Les Paul Standard. Are the pickups modded? Those are not stock, are they? I have the same pick ups.
Great video! Any suggestions on what power supplies fit under the smaller XPND?
..... The painters tape idea! thank you for that tip. i really hate the idea of removing the rubber from the bottom of the pedal. I'm 100% going to try this, thank you very much. Also the Board actually does seem awesome
Painters tape. Genius !
thank you for painter's tape - i've been wrestling that one forever
I use gaffer's tape. It holds basically forever and still peels right off without leaving residue or damaging labels/painted lettering.
Nice! I have so much painters tape. Heat gun is genius. Such a great tip, thx. Would have also been nice to hear what makes each of those pedals the most special pedals ever, but I do appreciate the short format
Nice pedal board and awesome cable kit. I found the cable kit more interesting. Thanks Phil 👍🤘
Thanks. This looks like a product for those who are not very handy or lazy. So it might be useful for myself. What I also found useful, as an aside, was the cable end connection. I have a Fender 10' guitar cable with a bad end. Looks like this is a way to easily replace it with no soldering.
omg this is a wonderful product thank you phil
Damn.... the painters tape on heat gun is straight up street genius. I have NEVER thought of that.
Cheers Phil. More gear I don't need but want and will probably buy 🤣🤣 seriously good board solution way more practical than what I currently have which is a couple of pedal train boards in different sizes. And the painters tape - what a great idea - many thanks
I wish you could choose which side extends as I have a real need for a board that expands to the right.
freaking love the painters tape idea. Hope everyone I ever buy pedals from in the future see this as well. =) One question, what do you do if there is rubber on the bottom? The velcro definitely doesn't stick. thanks.
When you do want to take the pedal off, wouldn’t the painters tape rip off the pedal before the Velcro and the board?
Spiffy Phil - thanks!
That's a really cool idea for a board. Really allows you to customize it to the exact size you need, which should alleviate a lot of the hassle when building a board.

Love your shirt!! Do you skate? Great demo, I love this board, need to get one for summer gigs..
What kind of painters tape do you use that actually adheres to pedals for any amount of time? I've tried all kinds and just can't get that kind of stick.

Fantastic Phil!
This is so genius. I feel like such a dolt not thinking of this before!!
I've been doing it like this ever since you died us years ago Phil!!! Love the expanda-board! By the way if they don't come with a bag, I suggest checking out the road winner series pedal bags for the electro harmonics pedal bags… they're cheap and work great and I'm sure these will fit any size! 🤘🎸😎

I like the FedEx vibe on the Keeley Caverns.
Very helpful, thanks!
The painter tape is a great idea! I wish I would have seen this before taking the labels off of some of my favorite pedals. Ouch, still kinda hurts. 😆
I simply use the back screws to fix non-adhesive velcro to the pedal. You just need to use 2 horizontal strips of velcro.
Test fitting with the adjustment levers open (4:30) is the secret to finding the perfect length.
Good tip, thanks
Holy Cow that is freakin cool, even the cable kit I'm in baby that is cool
Or you can get a temple board, longer screws and washers, then bolt the pedals down. That's what I did and I love it.
It saves money on packaging and paying a child to assemble it for us.... I feel ya though.
I use painter’s tape too, but sometimes the painter’s tape and Velcro/ Dual Lock comes off.
Very fine advice , thanks.
But screwed signalpathcables.... hmmm
Okay i'm old ..... i solder things 😉
Cheers
Great tips.
Now that’s a great tip!
That is a killer tip!
What pedals do you run in front of the amp head and what pedals do you run in the fx loop? Have you addressed this issue already?
Great Video Phill. Would check it out for sure
Don’t boss pedal bottoms flip over if you unscrew them, revealing a flat side?
Love this painters’ tape idea.
Wow I never ever ever thought of that
But I think I removed the rubber off of a boss pedal as a teenager. It was a mess and the flat bottom doesn’t stick out farther than the sides so the Velcro doesn’t stick perfectly..
Get a new camera? Clarity is great!! Love these kinds of video’s by you.
Brilliant!
For those prices, they should come with a built-in power supply.

I have a mij ce2 and bf2 that lost the labels from velcro
Ah man wish I new this before that's why I stopped using Velcro cause that would happen to my stickers on my pedal
Can you please review Newen guitar, made in Argentina. 🙏

00:55 Abracadabra
Is that a Bad Cat pedal?
you are number 5 building this pedalboard .whats going on ??
They sent them out for months, but asked a lot of channels to hold off until they actually had them because of supply chain issues March 1st was the first day most of us could share this.
This is genius
Slick!❤️😎🇺🇸
