This is my FAVORITE Christmas movie. It isn't the season until I've watched this movie. This year, I was fortunate to learn that it was going to be in theaters for the 70th anniversary and got to see this on the big screen.
I love seeing others discover classics like this one. :D

@@brithaddenhadden8383 This is actually inaccurate information. Yes, some sources, like Wikipedia entry for "Holiday Inn", indicate that this is a "very loose remake", but you may notice that there is no reference for that statement. The only similarity between the two in terms of plot is that there is an inn. This film was intended to be a third Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film based on the music of Irving Berlin (Holiday Inn and Blue Skies) but both Crosby and Astaire initially declined to do the third movie for their own reasons (Astaire didn't like the script, Crosby wanted to spend time with his family). Crosby eventually chose to do the film, and just before filming Danny Kaye signed on for the partner role. Obvious differences - no WWII connection in Holiday Inn (obviously since the US had yet to enter the war when the film was in production); Holiday Inn does not focus on Christmas but on every US holiday throughout a year, starting and ending on Christmas; the female leads have no connection to each other; Bing Crosby's entertainer character is not merely performing at the Inn, he owns the Inn.

@@brithaddenhadden8383 How is it a remake? If this is a remake, literally every film involving an inn is a remake of the first ever film involving an inn. That would make Psycho a remake of Holiday Inn, because it's about a failing inn. It's not common knowledge it's a remake, it's a common misconception that it's a remake. The studio intended it as a third film featuring Irving Berlin music, not a remake. It is not common knowledge, it's a common misconception because it was intended to have the same stars and based on a song that originated in Holiday Inn. But according to statements by Irving Berlin himself, White Christmas wasn't even intended to be the feature song of Holiday Inn, it just took off better because Bing preferred it over the central song that appears during Valentine's day. The idea that having the same stars and a similar setting makes it intended as a remake doesn't even make sense - name a remake of a film from a major studio that casts the same leads other than this?

I love this movie. Glad to see you loved it too. One interesting fact, the part where Crosby and Kaye lip sync the "Sisters" song was not in the original script. Crosby and Kaye were just messing around on set and the director decided to film it. They did it twice, but kept the first take because people liked Crosby's genuine laughter reactions to what Kaye was doing. Also, on a side note, another great movie with Vera Ellen is "On The Town", it also stars Gene Kelly ❤. Thank you for your genuine reactions, I know it takes time and effort and I appreciate it. Technicolor film is special in that once it is restored and conserved, and properly stored, it can be almost permanently saved (unlike digital because its technical equipment keeps changing.)

😎👍 "Summer Stock" Is an MGM film and "White Christmas" is an Paramount film, so I doubt they were filmed on the same soundstage. Movies that had scenes that took place in rural barns were so common in those days, that I wouldn't be surprised if all the major studios had the means to erect a set of that nature on their backlots at a moment's notice. 🎄

Danny Kaye was the type of actor that will be remembered as a true role model. He was married to his first and only wife happily for almost 50, was UNICEF's good will ambassador for over 30 years and when you see interviews with Danny Kaye's daughter the smile on her face was always genuine. He also had no scandals linked to him what-so-ever. That being the off-screen Danny, his on-screen personality was always funny and lovable. The funny part is that his co-stars always said that that on-screen personality of Danny's was also his off-screen personality. If you get the chance, the original version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty or The Court Jester are two of his best.

21:27 Yea, and that's unfortunate. When watching films of this era, it's sometimes hard to separate ourselves from our modern morals in order to enjoy the film. This is especially true when watching a film like Breakfast at Tiffany's. The first time a non-Caucasian to be nominated for Best Director was in 1965. The first time a non-Caucasian person won Best Director? That wasn't for another 40 years (2005, Ang Lee - Brokeback Mountain).
----Even when it comes to things like the "Sisters, Sisters" song performed by Danny Kay and Bing Crosby - the punchline is that they're dressed as women. That's it; that's the whole punchline.

"Summer Stock" was MGM, this is Paramount. The set was actually originally used in Paramount's 1942 "Holiday Inn" starring Crosby and Fred Astaire, in which Crosby originally introduced the song"White Christmas." Unfortunately, "Holiday Inn" does have a blackface number in it, to the Berlin tribute to Lincoln, called "Abraham" - the same music Vera-Ellen and Johnny Brascia dance to (without lyrics) towards the end of "White Christmas." The "mutual, I'm sure" girl is Barrie Chase, who later performed as Fred Astaire's dance partner in his TV specials. One of the male dancers in "Mandy" and " Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me" is George Chakiris, who later won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Bernardo in " West Side Story."

I’m not a fan of most miscommunication plots, but this is one of the few times when I think it works. Betty clearly thinks that bringing up what she (wrongly) heard about Bob’s TV plan would be pointless, because from the way people are reacting to her, it looks like she won’t be able to change their minds. Judy and Phil are too busy playing matchmaker to realize that Betty’s problem has nothing to do with romance, and Bob is being pulled in a few too many directions at once. It’s a powerful moment when Betty finally hears Bob confirm - without any prompting from her or any idea that she was listening - that she had nothing to worry about.

This film is a sort-of sequel to the 1942 film, "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. That is the film that introduced the world to the song "WHITE CHRISTMAS." It is also a very charming film, with songs, dancing, mix-ups, romance, etc. [Fair warning: it does contain an actual blackface number, called "Abraham," in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday (which was its own national holiday at the time, before being combined with Washington's Birthday into what we now call "Presidents' Day"). The blackface is actually a plot point of the film, so it's impossible to edit out. It was the early '40s, it was still a thing, sad to say. But anyway.] And yes: the title of that film IS where the hotel chain got its name. Holiday Inn hotels got their name from "Holiday Inn" the 1942 film.
Hollywood producers, since the immense popularity of "White Christmas" the song, were anxious to come out with a sequel, starring Crosby and Astaire. But it just never came together. World War Two happened. Life intervened. They're both popular, busy movie stars. Eventually, an entirely different script was put together- not a sequel at all, just a film featuring the title song. It was written to star Bing Crosby and Donald O'Connor (who most people remember as the "Make 'Em Laugh" guy from 1952's "Singin' in the Rain"). However, O'Connor had to drop out at the last minute, and Danny Kaye stepped in. (Those of us film buffs familiar with both men will recognize lines written for O'Connor and can hear him saying them, though Kays puts his own spin on the lines. It's really an interesting hybrid of sorts!)
My family watched this film every single year, all through my childhood; I grew up on it. It introduced me to Crosby's singing, and to all-around entertainer Danny Kaye, who I have loved ever since; seen (almost) all of his films, read several biographies, even seen a biographical stage musical about his life!! I simply love that man's many talents. And this film is where it all began, for me.
Vera Ellen ("Judy," the younger, dancing sister) starred with Kaye in a few films, among a long career. Though she was an extremely talented dancer, she was not a singer; her voice was dubbed for all of her musical films, including this one.
Rosemary Clooney (sister "Betty") was actually a couple years younger than Vera, but played the older sister- I guess she just seemed more mature. She was a well-established singer, with a long career before and since. Her nephew George Clooney has also, as I understand it, had some success as an actor.
13:00 - Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby performing the "Sisters" number was mostly improvised on the spot, to preserve the spontaneity: so the grins, chuckles, goofs, sly winks, etc. were all genuine there in front of the very amused cast of extras. No laugh track needed!
21:00 - When I was a kid watching the "Minstrel" number, I was yet unaware of the blackface minstrel phenomenon. But I had learned about medieval minstrels! So I assumed that this song was about some version of a guy with a lute in tight stockings, or some evolution of that tradition to modern times. Later I learned about the American entertainment known as Minstrel Shows. Dang. Fortunately, by 1954, blackface on screen was dying out- but this song *about* minstrels was still included, without the makeup. It's a fun number, still! The music, the dancing, the whole thing is extremely entertaining! But its roots give it an edge of melancholy now, for me.
35:00 - the "Abraham" number with Vera Ellen and dancer John Brascia. John was an extremely talented dancer, but apparently not much of an actor, as he never really took off in film musicals with lines. He does get to tell the acting troupe to "get your rehearsal costumes on, we'll start right after breakfast" in this film. Anyway- the music from this fast-paced routine is taken from "Holiday Inn." It's the blackface number about Lincoln's birthday. No blackface here, no lyrics, just a very up-tempo version of the tune. I'm sorry if that is something people didn't know; I don't want to ruin anything for folks. Just telling the truth; that's what it is.
In the year 2000, was adapted into a stage musical. My local community theatre group put on this show in 2013, and I was proud to play a part. We did it again in 2014, then '18, '21, and '22. I hope to do it again some time, and many more! The stage show makes some changes from the film- as all adaptations do- but it holds onto the core spirit, and is *almost* as good as the film, in my opinion. If you get the chance, if some theatre in your area is putting it on, I highly recommend giving it a watch.
The pathos of the General's story. The love story between the four performers. The fun music, amazing choreography, full Technicolor, broad Vista-Vision, everything about this movie is just so wonderful. It is my all-time favorite Christmas film, and among my top films of all time.

@@brithaddenhadden8383 Have you SEEN both movies? They have nothing in common:
      Holiday Inn (1942)
All the music was by Irving Berlin.
Jim Hardy (Bing Crosby) and Ted Hanover (Fred Astaire) have a song and dance act with Lila Dixon (Virginia Dale). Both men are in love with their female co-star. Jim plans to propose that night, but Ted and Lila have already made plans, and Jim is jilted. Jim goes on with his plan to leave showbusiness and retire to a farm. After a rough start, he decides to change his farm to an inn- one that is only open on the major holidays (hence the title: Holiday Inn), and to feature entertainment on those occasions.
Linda Mason (Marjorie Reynolds) is an aspiring entertainer, who takes an opportunity to audition and work at Jim's place: this is her break into showbusiness.
On New Year's Eve, Ted has now been jilted by Lila; he gets drunk and visits his friend's place. Blind drunk, he dances with Linda- but later cannot recall who this mystery-girl "new partner" is- her name, what she looks like, etc. Jim doesn't want to lose Linda to Jim the way he lost Lila, so he keeps her a secret.
[On Lincoln's Birthday, there is a rather unfortunate black-face number, called "Abraham." It's a plot-point that Linda is in blackface, so Ted doesn't recognize her.]
There is more drama, but in the end, Jim and Linda are together, Ted and Lila are back together, and all's well that ends well.
      White Christmas (1954)
All the music was by Irving Berlin.
During WW2 in 1944, Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) are performing a Christmas show for their fellow army company, when General Tom Waverly (Dean Jagger) arrives, and they sing a special song for their beloved general whom they respect so much.
After the war, Wallace and Davis team up as an entertaining duo, eventually getting into producing whole broadway reviews. One holiday season, they meet Betty and Judy Haynes (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen)- a singing and dancing pair who happen to be the sisters of one of the guys' old army buddies. The four of them travel by train to Vermont, to the Colombia Inn, which they are surprised to learn is owned by their old general: General Waverly!
They learn that the inn is not doing well, financially, and also that Waverly's hopes of re-joining the army have been dashed, and he is in need of cheering up. They put on an extravagant show (the rehearsals for which entertain us the movie audience), and in honor of the general, bring in all the old army company to sing a tribute to him and show how much he is loved and respected.
As their Christmas Eve performance is in progress, it really snows outside and it ends up being a White Christmas after all.
Now read those two descriptions and tell me in what way, shape, or form there is any possibility that White Christmas is a "remake" of Holiday Inn. It. is. not. I don't know what reviews you've been reading, but they are incorrect. It is not. It stars Bing Crosby, features music by Irving Berlin, and centers around a New England inn. That is where the similarities end. It is not a sequel, it is not a remake. In any sense or definition of either of those two terms. It was *conceived* as a sequel and/or re-make, but after years of script changes, cast changes, re-writes and alterations, what was put on screen was neither. They are two films separate in every single way, but for the title song.

Musicals from 1927 through the Golden Age were deliberately escapist. They helped people forget the Depression and then World War II. The idea of soldiers sacrificing, only to be ignored by their government on their return from war, is hauntingly conveyed in the movie "Golddiggers of 1933" in the song "Remember My Forgotten Man," about veterans of WWI.

The film "White Christmas" was rereleased to AMC movie theatres throughout the country last week. So I saw the film for the first time on the big movie screen at an AMC movie theatre in New York City in all of its Vista Vision glory..the way it was meant to be seen. Big budget musicals of the 1950's were not meant to be seen on TV and were not made for TV as the newly evolving TV was considered the enemy by the film studios in the early 1950's.

The set design for Summer Stock and White Christmas were similar but filmed on different lots as they were different studios. Summer Stock was MGM whereas White Christmas was Paramount. The scene where Bing and Danny lip-sync Sisters was not in the original script. They were fooling around with the props causing the cast and crew to laugh. Vera-Ellen’s voice was dubbed by Trudy Stevens.

Back in 2011 I was a part of the Paper Mill Playhouse Community Choir. We performed for Press Night when they were doing "White Christmas" and we got to see the show for free (And got free vouchers for families at a later time) When I tell you I got so much chills when the barn doors lifted to see the snow and the finale was amazing.

I am not a big Christmas person, and watching most Christmas movies or TV specials is not for me. However, White Christmas is a must every year. My list of Christmas films (or Christmas-adjacent ones) is pretty small.
    - White Christmas
    - Love Actually
    - Die Hard
    - Lethal Weapon (however, that always opens the need to watch the rest of the series...)
    - Last Christmas with Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, written by and co-starring Emma Thompson, with the classic WHAM! song "Last Christmas" (and others they recorded) throughout the movie.
    - The Holiday
    - Last Holiday
    - While You Were Sleeping

Merry Christmas Clariss! I know it can be the same in live theater today. But, I don't think people realize how hard people had to work in these old musicals. They had to be attractive, be able to sing and dance. The "Dancing" often had to equal or exceed acrobatics. The numbers in this film were mild compared to some I've seen.

This is back when you had to know all styles of dance and singing and be able to do them all like a pro just to get a modest paying role in a film being produced by the Hollywood film studio system. You had to be a multi talent to get anywhere. The Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire movie Holiday inn is really good Chistmas time movie with dance and song.

Vista Vision was a widescreen format approximately 2x the size of 35mm film. The colors that popped were made using the Technicolor technique. In my opinion Technicolor is the best…no other method comes close. After you’ve seen 20 or 30 movies with Technicolor you’ll be able to instantly tell the difference. Happy Holidays

    Love the reaction lady!
Like the famous Dancer/Singer/Actor Ann Miller and Cyd Charisse, Vera Ellen had also worked with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire in other films as well.
Of course there's the gene pool with Rosemary Clooney, George Clooney's Aunt. Every time i see her scene 'Love you didn't do right by me', i always shout when i see Bernardo (George Chakiris) from West Side Story.
Anyway! I could go on and on about Golden age Hollywood!
    Wonderful reaction!
You should really see it on the big screen when they bring it back out for the Anniversary!
And yes, In terms of Minstrel shows, Blackface was "going out of fashion" around the time this was filmed. The studio companies had to go with the times during Segregation.

I've heard of White Christmas the song, but not the movie; a fun little romp from nearly three-quarters of a century ago! I can't say most of it felt particularly Christmas-y, but it had whimsy and optimism that befits the season, and did have those few big sequences that were overflowing with Yuletide cheer.
According to the inflation calculator I found, $90 then would be over $1000 in today's adjustment.
Those sets were impressively and often *ridiculously* gigantic! Evidently, the Vermont set was refurbished from one from the musical film Holiday Inn.
Oddly or aptly, I kind of ship Bob and Phil - they just had so much chemistry!
There was the double-edged sword of HD restoration, such as with the colour popping out aesthetically pleasing like you noted, however, backdrops, while often still beautiful, were very obviously fake.
I suppose back in these days of movies, whenever it looked like the characters were in danger, they probably really were in reality, too. Speaking of, they had to do that wonderful dance choreography, but sometimes on sets that seem to have tenuous safety standards! lol
Kind of unfair that the men got those huge breezy suits, but the women had to wear corsets or something so that their torsos were crushed in the middle. I'm glad the sisters got to wear comfortable uniforms with pants at the end - I feel like that might have been transgressive back then.
I also froze like someone told me to do it when I heard the phrase "minstrel show." Aha. I choose to believe it was a reference to the original versions of musicians and jesters from medieval Europe (even though it absolutely was referencing the more problematic version. But the movie was so wholesome, so I doubt they had any ill-intentions).
I appreciate this little tour into a bygone era, building upon the Christmas spirit I already had during this day!
