Honestly Swayman is the reason Boston is here at all. Across all the postseason games this year Boston has only outshot its opponent 2 games out of 11 (Game 3 and Game 7 against the Leafs). In the 7 against Tor the shots were 215 to 193. Boston shot 22 less times but because the Leafs are trash at scoring and Swayman was a wall - they survived. Against the Panthers - through 5 its 116 to 79. That's a 37 shot deficit. Swayman has on a shot per goal allowed basis outperformed Bob - but the Panthers have vastly outperformed the rest of the Bruins - and with such an onslaught its just too much.

So you just go by shots? Don't factor in quality shots, blocked shots, and power plays. Question comes from allowing that goal when ref was right there, could've called cross check, interference, or goalie interference. Bennett with 2 hands on his stick cross checks Coyle into the goalie knocking both Coyle and Swayman down and immediately scores. No way that goal should count, announcers said the same thing except for Bissonette. How about consistency? Geekie gets called for goalie interference backing into Bobrovsky who goes down like he was shot with a .45 Really not much of a collision. All this after a game where Bennett clearly punches Marchand in the head on his reverse hit knocking him out of this game with upper body injury which most likely means concussion. I defended the Bennett reverse hit until I saw the other angle, NHL has the angle I saw where it is very clear. The Bennett goal and punch to Marchand are inexcusable non-calls. Not talking about refs missing calls, both are reviewed. At very least, NHL has an integrity problem.

It was a goal, in that Bennet scored it and there was no chance for Swayman to defend his shot.
Coyle could have defended the pass, or prevented the puck from getting to him.
But that's not what Boston challenged.
And hey, we can look at the rule book and everyone can say "that's not goalie interference" while denying that NHL refs have always called it as "does this IMPEDE Swayman from making that save". Nope. It doesn't. He was down and out with literally zero chance whatsoever of stopping Bennett HIMSELF. Coyle MAYBE could have defended it, but that's just not what Boston challenged.

If you read the official situation room ruling on the goal, and then look at the play in slow motion, you can see that Coyle falls from the crosscheck, attempts to get up, but fails to get his footing and slips back onto Swayman as Bennett is scoring. Their official take on the incident is that Coyle's contact with Swayman after he gets up and slips back down is not a result of Bennett's crosscheck.
I am a panthers fan, so yeah I don't mind that it benefits me, but in general I don't think it should be called that way, however I do think if it had been ruled a no goal on the ice it'd have stayed a no goal, if that makes sense.

I’m not sure how much talent Bruins will be able to bring in the offseason. But team chemistry counts for a lot in the playoffs and there has been a lot of roster turnover the last few years. So I have a hard time believing adding a couple of free agents is gonna translate into deep playoff runs. You gotta knock on the door a few years in a row with almost the same group of guys to get far.

NO CALL. I believe this was the same game where the refts did not call the trip at the blue line which immediately resulted in a Caps goal. 2-1 loss to Washington. Both of these penalties happened right in front of multiple Refs and they just refused to call it.

Crazy all the crap that is coming out from Bruins fans. From a pure hockey perspective, this series is not close. The Panthers are the best team in the 5on5, and it shows. They have completed dominated the Bruins, after they shook off the rust from Game 1. Have to give the Bruins credit for their effort, especially Swayman.
The extra curricular activity, yeah, its a bit much, considering who plays for the Bruins. As a Panthers fan, I can live without the Bennett punch to Marchand, but could care less about the other shit. The Bruins fell into the Panthers trap, and kept taking dumb penalties. Panthers stayed calm and cool, and let the Bruins self destruct.

As a Bruins fan I recognize that the Panthers are built better for the post season.
However the league let Florida operate this style of play last year too for whatever reason (Bennet's punch for ex)
Then they got absolutely crushed in the finals because it's ultimately not how they want teams to play on their biggest stage. It doesn't make sense.

  • @nolankuffner3573

Bruins didn't get a shot in the last 14 minutes.
Without Swayman stealing it, the Bruins would have been down 5-0.
    Crazy thing though?
The NHL's interpretation on ice is "does this IMPEDE Swayman from making that save?" And a level headed person HAS TO say no. He was balls on the ground, toes splayed out with TWO FEET between his right foot and the post.
If Boston had ANY sense, they would have called a timeout. Looked at the replay. Seen Swayman was NOT going to make the save, and instead challenged that COYLE was interfered with.
The second Bennett touches the puck to score, the play gets blown down and Boston gets a PP.
But the SECOND you look for goalie interference, you can ONLY look goalie interference.
And, again, if we're being honest.. even without Coyle being pushed into him, Swayman isn't stopping that. The only thing that CAN be argued from the play is MAYBE Bennett interferes with Coyle defending the pass.

First off. Shots on goal is an irrelevant stat when Vancouver won last night with half as many shots on goal as Edmonton. Scoring chances is the stat you need to be looking at and they are very close between the bruins and panthers. How the hell are you supposed to generate offense when Florida is man up for 14 minutes of a 20 minute period?
Second of all I hate this notion of “well bruins are only in it cause of swayman” is he not a part of the team? Is he not a player on the ice you also need to beat? Does 2011 not count because Tim Thomas had some of the best goaltending the league has ever seen? No, it still counts. The goalie is another player you have to beat and it clear the only way Florida can beat him is with free power play goals and by literally keeping him from moving.
Bruins got fucking robbed game 3 and game 4 it doesn’t matter who’s playing better it matters who wins and when you can only win when you are given 10 power plays a game that tells me you aren’t the better team.

Officiating is rough (though I do give NHL refs more of a break as the game is fast paced and they are only human after all.) I thin goalie interference needs to be reworked that makes it way more clear what is interference and what is not. As for the tying goal I thought the reason it was a no call was because the Bruins player was already in the blue zone when the cross check occurred. But I find the penalty is confusing. I can respect your type of Bruins fan (which very likely the majority as its always the noisy minority that gets all the attention.) But the ones crying about the officiating I don't respect it. The Florida panthers have outshot the Bruins 144-79 this series so far (that's a 65 shot difference) and that shows that the Bruins are just completely outmatched here. I do think the break the panthers had compared to the busy schedule of the Bruins is playing a factor in it. As for the cheap shots, both teams are very physical and get their shots in (whether cheap or late or clean) and for either fanbase to complain about that is just hypocritical (this does not include missed penalty calls as I understand why they would complain about that.) (I am also not saying that you are making those complaints.) Swayman is getting no defensive help and I really think if he just had that help the Bruins would not look so outplayed like they have been the last 3 games.

Upon further review it was a light check. Perhaps they were saying that Coyle probably could have stopped his own forward momentum. EDIT: I think Bennett has it right in his call on why he thought it stood. "[I'm] putting that puck in before Swayman's going to be able to get over whether Coyle is on him or not, so I think that's the reason why it stood. And that's how I saw it, as well." And that would be the ONLY way it makes sense to me ... that they determined the end result of the play was going to happen one way or the other. Its squiffy but makes more sense than just shrugging and going... i dunno.

They state that “Bennett's shove on Coyle - which resulted in the clash between Coyle and Swayman - "did not prevent Swayman from playing his position in the crease prior to Bennett's goal." so per the rule 69.1 if a defending player has been pushed, shoved or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalie, such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player - the NHL is basically arguing a gray area of milliseconds. A millisecond later it would be GI. Do I agree, yes technically but also no realistically. But thats what they get for not spelling out exactly what happens and leave gray areas to the refs. Same thing has happened for years in the NFL with what exactly defines a “catch” or a “football move”. It’s stupid. It’s their fault for leaving a window of interpretation open. But there it is.

It was a gambling ring. You know there are two current coaches playing in NHL that got into some trouble over it. Toccett and green oddly enough both coach on Canadian teams. Canada has won nothing in 30 years too..very weird in my opinion. In fairness these two coaches may not have any involvement now but you never know...but I do believe there is an issue in NHL. ESp with the Leafs....oh ironically Green was an x leaf back in the day too. You know the NHL does not seem to safe guard or attempt discourage this..Look at all the grey areas with how games are officiated. I no longer bet on ANY NHL games anymore. Its also a tough pill to swallow if its true. Too much money involed I think...makes people go crazy over the power of $$$$.
