Where else in the stratosphere are you going to see the GREATEST female musician of the last 100 years, the GREATEST electric player of all time, supported by legends and all time greats like Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Michael Brecker, among the greatest musicians ever on their respective instruments, not to mention world class songwriters. SPEECHLESS every time I see this.
Saw this little combo on this very 1979 tour. Only Joni could have made the phone calls necessary to assemble this band. I'm still not over the wonderful shock of it. What a collection of talent. I married my date right after it............
I was there. It was magical. I was almost too young to truly appreciate it. I had albums featuring every artist on the stage, and didn’t know until the concert started who would be in her band. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jaco for more than a second or two all night, but Michael Brecker was a monster too. I’ve been to lots of good and great concerts since, but I don’t think any performance could top that night in 1979 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.
Wow! You lucky so and so. Shadows and Light (from maybe a year or so later?) features the same band, and was one of the first Joni albums I bought. One amazing live band, playing some of the best material ever offered for human consumption!
I saw Joni in South Bend Indiana in 1974. I know the date because she commented on the Notre Dame UCLA basketball game that had just been played where ND broke UCLA's 88 game winning steak. She of course knew nothing about basketball but bet on ND, "for the underdog" while on the bus with a member of her crew and seemed kinda happy to have won the bet. Joni was gorgeous, transcendent, perfect. Congrats on your memory. I'm pretty happy with mine as well.
The way Joni walks around the stage at the end after she puts her guitar down, interacting and laughing with Pat Metheny......a combination of first sensuality, then modesty and finally joy in the moment....priceless.
It just doesn't get better than this. Greatest artist of the 20th century, and an all star band that is without peer. If there was ever a time capsule for these times, the video of this concert should be in it.
@@Teeb2023 I know, and I was not far away from this concert at the time but I was playing so much music myself that I didn't pay any attention to what concerts were happening. I'm just glad I have DVDs of my two favorite ones...this one by Joni, and the Pink Floyd Pulse concert in 1994.
OMG! What a band. This would have been one of the best tickets of the 70's. First class musicianship and fantastic songs and vocals. OMG! That's about all I can say.....
This video should have a lot more views. The bass being laid down by Pastorious is astonishingly good -- so good I don't even mind that it's mixed in a little too loud.
She was definitely at her best on that night and so was the band. Brecker amazes me how he just stands there and plays amazing music, but then again the whole band does. Jaco, Metheny it just doesn’t get any better than this. Love this show. Joni sings like an angel. L
I gather this song is based on a conversation Joni had with David Geffen who was bitchin about how busy he was and actually remembering a trip to Paris
Recorded in 1979 at the Santa Barbara Bowl Joni Mitchell's Mingus tour with Pat Metheny guitar, Jaco Pastorius bass, Michael Brecker sax, Don Alias drums, and Lyle Mays keys.
Love the lady since the first time I ever heard her. On a transistor radio in 1969. Love her so very, very much. Joni, too many things to thank you for!
I was there. What a memory. I am in this video/Concert audience. What fantastic days in Santa Barbara, The 1970's. Met her personally a year later on the Kanan Road Renaissance Fair.
One of the best jazz-rock-vocal bands in history! Joni! Pat! Jaco! And all the rest. I moved to STB about 4 years later...I would have paid dearly to see that show!
The music of Faso is an inexhaustible source of sweetness. It allows us to plunge deep inside ourselves and at the same time resonate with our fellow man, Yé Lassina Coulibaly❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This happened so many years ago, and still I can't stop watching. (Also, can we talk about Michael Brecker wearing a watch, and having his wallet hanging out of his back pocket? Like he popped in out of the office for a few songs)
Joni besides being one of the greatest composer and good singer , she is amazing rhythm guitar player, she can sing and keep the beat with her guitar, she does not need a band

"I was a free man in Paris I felt unfettered and alive There was nobody calling me up for favors And no one's future to decide You know I'd go back there tomorrow But for the work I've taken on Stoking the star maker machinery Behind the popular song." "I deal in dreamers And telephone screamers Lately I wonder what I do it for If l had my way I'd just walk through those doors And wander Down the Champs Elysées Going café to cabaret Thinking how I'll feel when I find That very good friend of mine." "I was a free man in Paris I felt unfettered and alive Nobody was calling me up for favors No one's future to decide You know I'd go back there tomorrow But for the work I've taken on Stoking the star maker machinery Behind the popular song."
Great song, on the original 1974 recording there was on guitar one of the most incredible guitarists on planet, his friend and neighbor at time, Jose Feliciano
I prefer the original, but this was still fresh and exciting and beautiful! Long Live Joni, one of Canada's greatest gifts to the world! And the talent on stage with her in this performance, WOW!
The caliber of musicians who ‘backed’ Joni is just a testament to her true artistry. I LOVE Joni! ❤️
Yes, so true.
Jaco on Bass.. considered to be in the top few Bass players in the entire history of the instrument..

That drummer though.
just listened to Michael Brecker playing sax on Donald Fagens nightfly album - Genius!
@@nondeblah Joni was going out with him, at the time.

Totally insane line-up.
She has such a unique songwriting style, and such a lovely, one-of-a-kind voice.

J A C O ! ! !
...and what about Jaco as well?
"Just how important was Joni's music?"
Metheny, Mays, Pastorius, Alias, Brecker. That's how.
I would shit my pants if they got on stage with me!!
Amen, brother!
I feel so lucky to have been there.
They're all the best of thee best. Brecker was one hell of a sax player.
Yeah, I mean I like Joni's music, but I was like "why are all the superstars in the back row?"

The Queen of alternate guitar tunings has arrived.
Haha, yeah. It must’ve been a challenge to play along with her.
@@chasbodaniels1744 Jaco's bass work never disappoints. Just one negative on Coyote. He over plays harmonics just a tad too much. Just sayin.
Alternative even.
Probably the best touring band of all time, the talent on stage is staggering. Testament to how respected Joni is.
I think the same, the best touring band
Zappa had some pretty amazing bands, but I can’t think of any other bands that are on this level.
Joni is timeless.
YEEEEEESS !!!!!!
Lyrical poetry set to music

Fantastic musicians
Joni's music is timeless. So many great songs. She is super talented...
One of the Greatest assembled Bands of all time.
One of the most memorable evenings of music I have ever heard live.
If you saw this live, I am in total jealousy mode.
She is a musical genius. Priceless talent.
They were/are ALL musical geniuses.

Well put
the mix is terrible on this recording , the bass is getting lost and you can't hear it properly too much bottom end.

51 seconds in Jaco peels of a sublime bassline, sax guy turns around like....'nice one bro'.
This is one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen !
What a musician, singer, composer!
What a performer!
And what a team!
Joni's forever!
❤❤❤
I gather this song is based on a conversation Joni had with David Geffen who was bitchin about how busy he was and actually remembering a trip to Paris
Yes she has confirmed it was about him.
Great to see Metheny/Mays augmenting the band beautifully whilst remaining true to their own style and musical culture. A pleasure to watch and hear.
There will only ever be ONE JONI.
She’s simply the best.
Been a fan since 1972.
Probably the greatest artist of our time talent as big as the sky especially with this lineup queen Joan much love.
She looks and sounds incredible. What a fantastic combination of her the other magnificent musicians who are sharing the stage with her.
My favorite album!.....🌻
MILES OF AISLES first, for me :)
Amazing bass by Jaco...all primo musicians playing in the groove! RIP Jaco and Lyle.
It sounds cliche, but it truly doesn’t get better than this. The perfect marriage of artist backed by a band capable of executing her musical vision.
Joni's Super Group...and Jaco's final note...Pure Joy...
This is one of the first singles that I bought Coupled with Car on the Hill
What a great version of a great song!
She was and is amazing!
All of these musicians had incredible talent, and they all worked very hard at what they did. The beauty they brought to the world lives on and on.

wow 20 years ago!
Ck the recent Rick Beato vid about Joni. It sounds like an interview is coming. What an amazing assembly of musicians on this video. Wow!
Other than the Doors, this might be the only stage setup I've ever seen with where every amp on the stage is solid state.
Here’s another instance of a great moment from decades past. Where has the time gone?
This a great performance and the bass part is like a song on it's own - keep coming back to listen this !
She is a GIANT in popular music. Underappreciated by the younger generation--until they hear her!
Love the lady since the first time I ever heard her. On a transistor radio in 1969. Love her so very, very much. Joni, too many things to thank you for!
Even if you don't care for the genre of music the "musicianship" is amazing.
“Attempted Election Fraud”, actually. It failed.
As good and brilliant as she is, working with this combination of players must still have been an existential high!
I saw this group at the Greek Theater in L.A. The Shadows and Light tour had everything, a great all around artistic experience.
Grey Fox in the Snow - what an album title!
These were the great times, anyone that says '70's music was lame, was not there to see this!
I was there. What a memory. I am in this video/Concert audience.
What fantastic days in Santa Barbara, The 1970's.

This is SOOOOOO good!!!!! What a musical treat! Thanks to Joni and all the incredible musicians!
Sublime. She looks like a happy schoolgirl at the end. Joni in a dream band is still Joni!
This will never grow old.
Always amazing. What a powerful group of albums Michell produced one after the other. Memories.
Thanks for sharing this.
Watching an interview with Graham Nash. Had not known that CSN's Our House was about Joni and Graham.
Need to add Mays and Brecker in the title as well. Two additional all-timers.
This reminds me of Woodstock 94. A nice outside festival with good people and good music
Joanie plays in very small towns I saw in a small movie theater in Grant's Pass Oregon she tours in a big RV still great voice
For those not aware THE free man in Paris Joni sings of was David Geffen
Was aware - great story telling lyrics, right?

I like how she looks feminine and chic on her own terms: completely comfortable with herself it seems. What a talent and artist.
We saw this fantastic performance at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin and it was like being in Nirvana!!
Joni brought together the strongest popular music ensemble of the last half century. Never gets old watching this band.

how music has changed....equal this performance with current acts.
