This new episode is for class 12 English summary in Nepali language where we have covered an essay titled. “Knowledge and Wisdom” by Bertrand Russell. The essayist was born as Bertrand Arthur William Russell on 18 May 1872 and he died on 2 February 1970. He is always remembered in the English literature for his multiple contributions as a British philosopher, social critic as well as a logician. His work has made a great impact on various fields including set theory, mathematics, logic, computer science, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy of language, metaphysics and epistemology. As a Nobel laureate, public intellectual, political activist and public intellectual, he has contributed a large ideas and philosophies to the modern society.
The essayist distinguishes knowledge from wisdom. He has defined knowledge as the garnering of facts and information. On the other hand, wisdom is the practical application and use of the knowledge in order to create the value.
According to Bertrand Russell, the factors that contributing to wisdom are a sense of proportion, awareness of the ends of human life, comprehensiveness and staying away from personal prejudice.
The essayist is trying to tell that knowledge without wisdom is not beneficial to the world and humankind. Sometimes, lack of wisdom in knowledge can threaten the humankind. This is the reason that a sense of comprehensiveness is essential in order to become a wise person.
The essayist has also stated that leaders like Queen Elizabeth I, Henry IV and Abraham Lincoln were the ones who became able in mixing knowledge and wisdom in the best manner. He has put his opinion in support of wisdom mentioning that the aim of education must be to achieve wisdom.
