The greatest election advert ever made. You just had to be living in Australia when this aired for the first time on TV. It's effect was immediate and resonated with the electorate in way that no political advert ever has since. And it won Gough Whitlam the 1972 general election. I was 9.

I was 14 in1972, too young to vote, parents who voted Lib. This song, the Ad & the sheer force of Gough Whitlam's personality made politics exciting for a young person. 23 years of Menzies was like sheep overdosing on valium - Boring. Watching this now still gets the hair up on the back of the neck, thrilling stuff.

The greatest political ad ever! Fit for purpose past, present and future.
I immigrated to Australia in 1991....self interest dictates I vote Liberal...I never did and will never do.
Labour, for all their faults, are nation builders...education, health, superannuation, fair IR, championing the causes of the underprivileged class.
This song encapsulates all....go Australia......best country in the World and I should know as I travelled widely and lived on 12 countries throughout my life.

To those born well after 1972, on this day, the 49th anniversary of Whitlam's PM swearing in:
It's quite impossible to not exaggerate the optimistic sense that this 'cry' gave to those of us who were there (even if I was a small kid), to those later born generations who were not, and this as it concerns the feeling which it instilled in us - one that Donald Horne neatly came to call, 'Time of Hope'. I feel genuinely sorry for those who never got to experience a true leader like Whitlam (despite his faults) - even if a later generation had a kind of Whitlam redux with Keating - while Gough's vision for Australia (and one that hopefully still lives on!) is the total antithesis of the smug 'lifestyle' aims which the current mean and miserable post neoliberal excuse for a 'government' is the apologist for! If anything, Gough challenged us to 'grow up' and take our place as a responsible member of the international community, while Scomo's 'bugger the world' and beaches and barbies 'vision' is about 'non-growth', with that conceited 'aspiration' being a further stage 'petit bourgeois revisited' throwback to Howard and Abbott!

Ever since then that excitement to vote for any political leader in Australia, is no longer there, except for Bob Hawke a sayer and a doer.
Australia has been in the political wilderness since the Hawke and Keating days have passed.
Today you won't ever get Australian celebrities of this calibre coming together.

That is right in the middle of the time frame 1972 - 2012, then there were 4 other instances of ALP governance.
    Your math is wrong.
Now if we take the statement correctly it would be 40 years before 1972. Where there was 20 years (not 40 years) of a Liberal/National government. (1949-1969)
