Former trained ambulance driver here... I've been driving the 2020 Forester sport for almost a year now as a rideshare driver in New England. I can say without a doubt the guy driving the Forester at minute 6:33 is dead wrong about the steering and/or any other driving related aspect of the Forester. As a trained professional driver, there is not a single situation I have put the car into that it has not been able to handle with utmost confidence. To be honest my only complaint with the 2020 is the auto high beams turn off for roadside reflectors and streetlights(sometimes making it look like you're flashing the lights), and the front seats lack serious comfortability (long drives kinda leave me with sciatica)... I'm 6ft tall and the bottom of the seat only comes about three-quarters of the way to my knee(so either a longer seat bottom or sliding extension). the padding of that seat could also use about three hundred more dollars worth of padding; come on memory foam 😂! and if you drive the car with a modicum of sense you can get 30 mpg combined which I %99 of the time get as long as I don't forget I have it in sport# mode 🤣😂
That was not a 2019 Mazda CX-5. Probably a 2018. CarPlay & Android Auto come standard on every trim level except Sport, and the Sport doesn't offer leather. Also, if it were a 2019, then why not the 2.5 SkyActive Turbo for this comparison? I could be wrong if this is a Canadian market Mazda CX-5, but what you were driving would be the equivalent of a 2018 in the U.S. market.
The Mazda is small... compare it to a Mazda 3 hatchback. CRV has my vote due to its 32% larger storage, comfort for all, and looks. I especially like the rear lighting set up it's very Volvo like.
i just bought two brand new CX5 GT Turbo 2019 models and i lovi it , did tested other cars mentioned here but with all the respect to U review i did not like new subaru or honda , the feel , drive and the look did not grab me as new Mazda did. it just had that extra feel when i was testing mazda. That is not a 2019 CX-5!! The 2019 CX-5 does have Android Auto. Also there is USB ports in the back. Its in the center armrest. Also the CRV and Forester are FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGLY AF!!!!
Im just here to read comments.. and im amazed how people really love the CX 5.. unlike some years ago where no one really cares if its a mazda.. ☺.. it shows how mazda's cars speak for itself..
Overall pretty good comparison review. But he forgot to mention that Subaru Forester's biggest advantage over others is its insane off-road capability. It can go places (snow, mud...minus serious rock crawling) that these two others would be dead stuck. It's what really separates Forester from many other in this category.
I’d choose the Mazda CX-5 any day over the others. Styling on the inside looks classy and luxurious and the outside is a lot more attractive than the others. It just looks more expensive and premium. Plus it has a better transmission and is fun to drive with the handling it has (the other two are 2019 signature models which you also should’ve done with the CX-5 as well to keep it fair) . On top of all of that it’s cheaper too...
Remy D when I go on Mazda it says that top of the line CX5 is 43k and top of the line forester is 42k. Pricing might be different cause I live in Canada. I went off of prices from last year but I should’ve checked this year before I said anything . Even then it’s only 1k more and you get a way more premium feeling car
I'll go with the 2017 or 2018 Honda CR-V over the other two. The technology was well ahead of them on it as of the 2017 Model CR-V. And we do not have the oil dilution problem here in NZ. Maybe only the US and Canada models have that problem. Cheap to buy here too
@@worrywart1311 id forgive that but those wheels are from the 2018 model. It's not the new model. They don't even discuss the other 2019 trims because they're testing a 2018.
I was looking to purchase the 19 CRV, but found out that the 17 and 18 CRVs are having oil dilution, stalling, and battery issues due to the 1.5 liter turbo engine. Has this issue been fixed with the 19 CRV?
I know the "arm on the window" thing might have been included as a joke, but there is little more annoying than getting in a car that doesn't do this right.
Thing to keep in mind with the Forester...if you have to replace windshield, it’s over $1k because it’s special for the EyeSight system. My daughter’s ‘17 Forester thank God doesn’t have EyeSight and if she did would have cost us over $2k in repairs in two years.
9:14 "other cars have a ton of USB ports" I'm sorry but theres 5 passengers, 2 USBs in the front (through adapter), 2 in the middle, and 2 in the BACK. Is 6 plugs not enough? (and do the other crossovers have more? doubt it)
CX-5 is a very very driver focused vehicle, and sadly that's it about it. For the rest of the usage, it really falls way behind both CR-V and Forester, regardless of which trim you go for.
Silent Refusal, The CX-5 is just not a good looking car inside or out. It is just blah. The foolish touch screen looks like they just sat it on top of the dash. I don't know how the car rides but it would never win a beauty contest. Cramped styling in the back seat.
It’s not a comparison without the top-selling Rav4. Leading power with the base engine, a 9-speed automatic and tons of room. Plus it has a hybrid option that gives you up to 41mpg in the city.
I did test drive those 3 cars.. CRV the gear is really stiff & bulky, CX5 back seat is very tight & entertainment system is very old fashion, but Subaru has everything & smart.. so Subaru is the best by far! .. cos if it comes with Turbo.. will be awesome!
okay, all three cars are beautiful, and they all live up to standards, including the 2018-19 CX-5, but Honda is still kinda my style (I know I’m very bland but yeah lmao) . All 3 cars are stunning, and gorgeous though.
Just the fact that the CX 5 has a 6 spd auto makes me consider it more than the others. That and I don't need an undersized engine with a turbo that will need service sooner or later and it won't be cheap. All that with that elegant looking interior means I'll be visiting Mazda sometimes in the future.I like the forester but I HATE cvt's!
They left out the fact that the Forester symmetrical all wheel drive is the best and standard. That is an important consideration for those of use in snow country.
Mazda's biggest advantage is the traditional six speed transmission and naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine. Not sporty, but I trust it to go 200,000 miles more than I would the alternatives.
@@paulpham5940 Ha! you sure about that? There's two top dogs in this class and that's the Toyota Rav-4 and Mazda CX-5, I don't know who holds third place but it's definitely not the Subaru.

CX-5 feels wayyyy above it's class in feel and drive. Everyone basically agrees it feels like a German car on the inside and driving with the reliability of the Japanese. It's amazing
Forester any day, hands down the best out of these 3. Feels solid like a train on the road. And the 2018 XT is still the fastest SUV in its segment. Waiting to see the new turbo model for this generation
The CX5 turbo makes almost 60 more lb ft of torque than the Subaru, and the Subaru pulls 0-60 in 6.8 seconds with a terrible cvt. The CX5 pulls 0-60 in 6.4 seconds with a 6AT. So, your statement is plain wrong. The interior of the CX5 is so far ahead of the Forester its not even close. And I even like Subaru lol.
Edmund's longterm CX-5 driven in California has an underlying theme that it is slow. It maybe faster than a Prius but it is still slow. "I got ready to pull back into traffic, traffic that was scooting along somewhere around 50 miles per hour. Although the CX-5 managed to get me up to flow-of-traffic speed, it didn't seem the least bit happy about it. The sluggish response to me laying into the gas was more than surprising - it was disappointing. The CX-5 is fantastic in many respects. But getting up to highway speed quickly isn't one of them." "...several of us are already disappointed in the CX-5's somewhat toothless acceleration and general non-zoominess, we're all furiously plastering the accelerator to the floor in an attempt to coerce any life out of this powertrain. That's not going to help our fuel economy." "The CX-5's non-turbocharged four-cylinder has to work hard to keep up with traffic, and it doesn't have much left when you pull out to pass on the highway. Adding that turbo engine would make the CX-5 'feel alive' in a way that it doesn't now." "push the CX-5 at all or try an aggressive lane change, the lack of power is very noticeable. The engine growls loudly, but the CX-5 does not move to match the sound. Also in terms of fuel economy, I was averaging just over 20 mpg, which falls short of the EPA ratings. Compared to the fuel economy you can get in the Honda CR-V, which feels larger and more powerful, the Mazda CX-5 doesn't compare."
I have heard the newer Subarus can use a lot of oil? Not sure if they solved that problem? The Forester also needs to bring back the manual transmission.
Nice review, l drove all three of these plus the RAV4 and guess what I bought a Rouge SV which doesn’t seem to get any love from reviewers. Beauty is the eye of the beholder.
I have an 18 crv ex and besides swapping out the halogen headlights for led’s, I’m very happy with it. It’s quiet, smooth riding and gets good mpg and awd. The cvt does take some getting used to..... I traded an ‘18 accord touring 2.0 for the crv.
The one thing that the Subaru has that others do not is eyesight. The front and rear collision avoidance system. Best in the industry bar none and it’s standard on the Forrester!
The Honda CR-V is faster 0-60 than the Forester or the CX-5 with base engine of them per the stats out there. I see times of 0-60 in the 7.3 to 7.8 second range posted. If it's quicker, how is it more boring than the Subaru? Is the Subaru actually quicker or does the Subaru feel quicker even if it can't beat the CR-V on pedal to the floor 0-60 times? By the way, it's fine that you didn't review the 2019 Turbo CX-5. Not a fair comparison. The Turbo is quite a bit more $$$. The entry level leather trims, Honda CR-V EX-L and Subaru Forester Limited are thousands less than the Turbo CX-5 and come almost loaded. I would like to see a comparison of those "Limited" trims just below the grand pubah top trims of the three of these. That's where a lot of buyers spend their dollars.
The newest CR-V with a turbo engine has reliability problems, including fuel getting in the engine oil. The Mazda 6 and CX-5 got the highest reliability rating in the April 2019 Consumer Reports magazine, also the Subaru Crosstrek and Ascent (even though there is very little info for the Ascent). I drove these 3 and liked the Mazda CX-5 the best for looks and how it drives. I can live with the smaller luggage area and other problems. We have a 2013 CX-5 with 70,000 miles- it only needed a new shifter for the automatic transmission, so far, that was redesigned for newer years.
@@jeffruebens8355 I believe you, for now. In the long term, the CX5 and Crosstek will soon encounter serious transmission and engine problems. Both cars have JATCO made transmissions, one of the most problematic in the world and boxer engines of Subaru are known for blowing their head gaskets less than 100,000 miles. Listen to a mechanic with 50 yrs of experience named Scotty Kilmer on RUclips.
We are a family of five. For my lifestyle, CX5 all the way! With the Signature trim, this SUV is now in a different league, like it or not. The infotainment needs a complete overhaul, though. It sucks.
If it wasn’t for the oil dilution issues Honda CRV definitely wins. But in the real world, Toyota RAV4 wins. Blind spot monitor standard across the board not just top trims, and no super complex turbos etc. Just auto trans and natural engine. Plus, LED lighting is standard on all trims.
I think the majority of people who say the CX-5 is best are these youngsters who have some growing up to do. Let me know when you guys turn 30 if you are still thinking about fast cars? And most importantly, when you guys have kids of your own someday, when you buy them their first car, let me know if you buy them a fast car?

I could be wrong if this is a Canadian market Mazda CX-5, but what you were driving would be the equivalent of a 2018 in the U.S. market.
They literally just said 2018 in the start of the video. Not sure where you're getting 2019.
Domo It says 2019 when they introduce it at 7:40
@@christopher01221 But not at the beginning of the video.
@@Reggaetonaldo
At the beginning of the video they stated "the 2018 winner", not 2018 CX-5. The title of this video says "2019". Wrong car!
2019 CX5 signature trim is far better than these two rivals . This is not a fair comparison.
I cant really understand that they publish this video and expect people in this day and age to get fooled.
CX5 is completely sad and is shit
The Mazda is small... compare it to a Mazda 3 hatchback. CRV has my vote due to its 32% larger storage, comfort for all, and looks. I especially like the rear lighting set up it's very Volvo like.
i just bought two brand new CX5 GT Turbo 2019 models and i lovi it , did tested other cars mentioned here but with all the respect to U review i did not like new subaru or honda , the feel , drive and the look did not grab me as new Mazda did. it just had that extra feel when i was testing mazda. THX for the review .
Thanks for watching! Congrats on your new car!
Closed the video as soon as I found out they aren't reviewing the new CX-5 turbo
Maybe because it's not in the price category. It's $4k more expensive than the other cars' Max trim
Right!!
@@remyd8767 Its actually because they were actually using the 2018 and calling it a 2019 (but yes the trim level is also higher)
I got one, sOFFtRoader, 2019 forester, as an all rounder, economy, the best I’ve owned … dirt/gravel, washboard/corrugated roads, smooth as, the awd in a class of its own at speed on dirt, eyesight thingy … variable cruise control, yes, and interior space, seats down, yes, accommodates sleeping me prone (5’11"), 45 litre fridge, and personal camping gear … anyway, does what I need to drive … and does it reliably, safely, comfortably … 👍🏼🤷🏼♂️
Top of the line cx-5 is $38k. Top of the line Forester is $35k. cx-5 is more expensive
Cheap to buy here too
Nothing beats this team! I love my daffy duck, old asian caricature, and PewDiePie car reviewers!
Where have you been lately??
I’d take the CX-5 any day.
Trash
I just purchased a 2020 cx-5 and I love it im getting 28.8 mpg in the city better than my Honda CR-V got.
This is not the new CX-5. Not interested.
The non-turbo model is still also current; not everyone wants or can even afford the Signature.
Kenny Sanders fake news.
Is the body shop screwing you over saying they have to replace the whole eyesight system? Or is the windshield itself designed non standard?
Forester. My work is done.
Well said
9:14 "other cars have a ton of USB ports" I'm sorry but theres 5 passengers, 2 USBs in the front (through adapter), 2 in the middle, and 2 in the BACK. Is 6 plugs not enough? (and do the other crossovers have more? doubt it)
“It does everything your car does…. BUT BETTER” 🤣🤣🤣
@@roberta.lofgrenjr.9182 My thoughts exactly
Why do this video without the 2019 RAV4 best selling SUV in the US 2018 (old model)
Probably Toyota did not have one available for review at the time.
Or The new 2019 Santa Fe which looks the best of the bunch
How about because it wasn't yet available when they made the video. Sheesh!
Come on Auto Guide. Why are y’all review the 2018 CX-5 in 2019. The 2019 has a more powerful engine and apple care play
It’s not a comparison without the top-selling Rav4. Leading power with the base engine, a 9-speed automatic and tons of room. Plus it has a hybrid option that gives you up to 41mpg in the city.
George L their prices are sky high on top trims. They have no Android Auto. They are slow for the engine hp. Many dealers bump up the prices.
George L because they are as ugly as sin, have no off-road capability, and only suit men who work in hair salons
if they put a turbo in that forester, itd be a definite winner
I did test drive those 3 cars.. CRV the gear is really stiff & bulky, CX5 back seat is very tight & entertainment system is very old fashion, but Subaru has everything & smart.. so Subaru is the best by far! .. cos if it comes with Turbo.. will be awesome!
okay, all three cars are beautiful, and they all live up to standards, including the 2018-19 CX-5, but Honda is still kinda my style (I know I’m very bland but yeah lmao) . All 3 cars are stunning, and gorgeous though.
I originally wanted to go with the CRV Honda but I don't want to deal with the oil dilution issue.
Bring on the why isn’t there this vehicle or that vehicle in this comparison
WhERe Is ThE rAv4?
When was this recorded? In the fall? Was Rav4 available then? Idk...Definitely they should wait to include rav4.
Hyn Sum you know I was being sarcastic right? Making fun of people right?
@@dygardion9130 my bad
Yes this was recorded in the fall before the Rav4 came out and before the new Mazda CX-5 was available!
AutoGuide.com you waited 6 months to release this? Why bother releasing it at all?
And what about off road comparison? Probably forester would beat them all?
Just the fact that the CX 5 has a 6 spd auto makes me consider it more than the others. That and I don't need an undersized engine with a turbo that will need service sooner or later and it won't be cheap. All that with that elegant looking interior means I'll be visiting Mazda sometimes in the future.I like the forester but I HATE cvt's!
Subaru is the best !
Why?
The CVT
...said no one!
@@gutadin5 The only system that can drag itself up the icy hill on one wheel of traction...
Are you guys driving these cars near Centennial Park in Etobicoke?
I didn’t finish the video. 2019 cx5 please.
Why?
That Honda engine looks like something out of the 1980's ?...
LOL “CRV feels like a meal replacement drink” - that’s such a good description.
Riyad Kalla, Apparently it is not a meal replacement drink. The car is awesome and very good looking as well. Nice ride to boot.
They left out the fact that the Forester symmetrical all wheel drive is the best and standard. That is an important consideration for those of use in snow country.
No discussion of the CRV gas/oil dilution issue?
yes, what about that problem? is there a solution yet?
That Forester is so ugly outside and the interior already looks dated, I’ll take the Honda CRV for being the most well rounded of the 3.
Crv leather seats are ugly though.
Mazda's biggest advantage is the traditional six speed transmission and naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine. Not sporty, but I trust it to go 200,000 miles more than I would the alternatives.
That's not the new CX-5, that's a 2018 model with the naturally aspirated engine. unfair comparison.
Eh even if they upgrade to the 2019 model, yk the subie forester is alit better in all ways
@@paulpham5940 Ha! you sure about that? There's two top dogs in this class and that's the Toyota Rav-4 and Mazda CX-5, I don't know who holds third place but it's definitely not the Subaru.
It has been proven in dozens of videos and test that the Subaru Forester is on of the best offroad SUV with its Subaru symmetrical AWD system , Also best safest suv acing all of the safety pro caught ion test . Mazda CX-5 as it’s runners up
ruclips.net/video/cs7PSpIMJYk/видео.html
@@paulpham5940 You can say whatever you want, the Toyota and Mazda are better engineered cars. Subaru engines are weak, they are at their best when they have low mileage on them, has it starts to get up there in mileage things start to fail, no thank you. (also I've heard chatter of their CVT transmissions giving up the ghost too). I want a Marathon runner not a sprinter.
And the 2018 was the last XT forester 😂 too bad
@@jonathanr9619 It's ok, there is an even faster and more spacious Outback XT right now.
CX-5 is the best no doubt and now offered with 2.5 T. No no on CRV due to gas/oil diluted issues that Honda has no clue for remedy.
But getting up to highway speed quickly isn't one of them."
"...several of us are already disappointed in the CX-5's somewhat toothless acceleration and general non-zoominess, we're all furiously plastering the accelerator to the floor in an attempt to coerce any life out of this powertrain. That's not going to help our fuel economy."
"The CX-5's non-turbocharged four-cylinder has to work hard to keep up with traffic, and it doesn't have much left when you pull out to pass on the highway. Adding that turbo engine would make the CX-5 'feel alive' in a way that it doesn't now."
"push the CX-5 at all or try an aggressive lane change, the lack of power is very noticeable.
I would buy Mazda, my dad would buy CRV/Subaru. That is the difference.
I have heard the newer Subarus can use a lot of oil? Not sure if they solved that problem? The Forester also needs to bring back the manual transmission.
That problem is solved as the 2019 model has a newly designed 2.5l with a timing chain and higher compression.
Good New interviewer 👍 better than the Last one
Nice review, l drove all three of these plus the RAV4 and guess what I bought a Rouge SV which doesn’t seem to get any love from reviewers.
Beauty is the eye of the beholder.
Chris Walls Nissan is the worst automaker when it comes to reliabilty and quality. They are the Chrysler of Japan. I wish you luck with that Nissan.
1.5L in CRV is a freaking joke. You cant cheat physics, we'll talk in 5 years
I have an 18 crv ex and besides swapping out the halogen headlights for led’s, I’m very happy with it. It’s quiet, smooth riding and gets good mpg and awd. The cvt does take some getting used to..... I traded an ‘18 accord touring 2.0 for the crv.
Steer clear from that stupid CR-V. Engine design has major flaw. Oil dilution problem. I’m one of the victims
What's up with people not using S in the CR-V and then complaining about a boring drive? D is for fuel efficiency.
Reliability wise, the CR-V will outlast the two.
@@emmanuels.3003 He changed his mind. Now Jatco is not in Mazda CX-5, but Mazda designed transmission. So, Scotty was wrong and you are wrong.
wtf? HOW CAN YOU NOT INCLUDE THE RAV4 IN THIS REVIEW? TOYOTA SELLS MORE RAV4s EVERY YEAR THAN MAZDA'S SALES VOLUME FOR ALL VEHICLES COMBINED!
Because its a review for 3rd best cuv ... next to RAV4 and Rogue based on american top selling cuv.
Honda CRV! I love mine!
I like Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester.
In 2019 I'd probably have picked forester but cx5 is the best out of 3 in 2023.
I think the majority of people who say the CX-5 is best are these youngsters who have some growing up to do. Let me know when you guys turn 30 if you are still thinking about fast cars? And most importantly, when you guys have kids of your own someday, when you buy them their first car, let me know if you buy them a fast car?
I'm 48 yo guy. I still think about fast cars. Are you like 120 yo guy maybe?
id go with the Mazda i prefer gears that change and that are not "simulated". But that Subaru's interior is nice tho.....im not even gonna lie
Doesn't a CVT automatically rule it out?
Only if you are a dill.
