Jervis Bay After Dark

  • On Friday 10th July 2020, Barfleur Beach in Jervis Bay came to life after dark with an amazing display of bioluminescence (Microalgae Noctiluca scintillans).
This footage was captured on a Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera using a 50mm prime lens. This camera has excellent low light performance however even it was pushed to its limits in order to capture this amazing spectacle. It's only been in the last few years that we've had cameras capable of capturing images like this after dark.
This video is for anyone who wanted to see the bio but missed it, anyone who hasn't seen bio before or anyone who just wants to relive this amazing experience.

I experienced bioluminescence for the first time back in the dark ages when I was in high school. One night, I was at a party on Anna Maria Island and few of us decided to go swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and as we were running down the beach, kicking up the sand, we were amazed as the ground where our feet made contact with the sand would briefly glow blue. At first, some of my friends thought I was drunk and making it up until I demonstrated it for them. You had to hit the sand really hard in order to agitate the plankton in it enough to cause the light to be emitted.

I was lucky enough to see bioluminescence once when I was a teen vacationing at a beach in, of all places, South Carolina. As far as I know, SC is never mentioned in lists of places where bioluminescence is common; but I did see it, and I'll never forget it as a long as I live. It was pure magic.

"If a man stretches out his hand, he will not see it! If Allah does not give light to a person he will not have light!" Quran 24:40
in this verse a person cannot see his hand using sunlight but Allah can still give light. This implies that in deep waters there is light but not from sunlight. Today scientists confirm that in deep waters animals can produce their own light by bioluminescence.

This phenomenon occurs during what is called a 'red tide.' During the day the water is red and at night wherever the water is agitated it emits the bioluminescence as above. It occurs at different times and can last for fro weeks to a month. Google gives a more scientific perspective. Hope that helps 😇😇
