This is partially a remake of an older video called "How to ASK for Critique", but I wanted to make a general video on critique instead of just giving one side on it.
Music by Lee Rosevere.

i wish art classes (or at least high school level art classes) actually taught students how to critique. everyone was so afraid to say anything remotely negative about someone else's art that critiques just turned into a huge circle jerk. i never got any feedback that wasn't "oh this looks good! nice job!" critiques were so awkward and quiet that even the teachers started to dread them
oh and whenever there was a legitimate criticism about five other people would jump in to talk about how much they love that part that was criticized. let's just say no one really improved, like at all
Heck, this is an issue not just in art classes, but pretty much *anywhere* that involves some amount of creative work.
genuine eel my high school art teacher didn’t know how to give critiques to students, let alone the students themselves
genuine eel yo saaaame my artclass is dead bro! XD
@@serialexperiments not only creative work, people are brought up to be snowflakes, told they can be anything they want, that they can achieve everything and teacher or parents can barely lay a finger on the kid. Some people take this as being entitled to a life where everyone compliments them and get offended the second someone questions their perceived perfection, and in turn they act the same way to others, knowing they would get hurt if someone criticized them, they project the same feelings to everyone else. tbh this is a big problem because these people then always get hit hard by reality

This video is just a ploy to get the comments to explain how to draw a frog.
Snipper Joey pffffh haha

I was going to comment something along those lines: he probably made this video because he needs critique about his frog drawing and hes too afraid to ask 😅
The frog “butt bounce” had me.
Highschool art classes should show this video on the first day.
Whenever I ask for critic I just get “it’s really good,” or “it sucks,” like, I appreciate saying you like it, but maybe you can tell me what you like so I know that I’m going in the right direction with that thing? Same for the bad things...but oh well
I agree with everything you said in the video but especially with the non artists giving critique. One of the most useful critique I have ever received was from my mum. Yup. She pushed me towards experimenting with my art and getting out of my comfort zone which made my art much much better. (I would probably be in my anime phase if she wasn't helping) When I asked for critique from my friends I really didn't get anything useful lol. Well what I'm saying is be more open minded guys.
Can I see your art somewhere
DO YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO DRAW PROFESSIONAL AND IMPRESSIVE ART WORK FROM SCRATCH THAT WILL BLOW PEOPLES MINDS?
no, I don’t think I will
no
I can draw a riddle and put it up for sale. Easy.
It just pop out at the same time i was reading this, odds are interesting
yes
I’m in that place where everyone around me knows nothing about drawing and see my creations as something great, and those who know about drawing don’t even notice my things.
Ive been watching your art ramble videos for a couple of years by now and I might have already said something similar but I just want to say that I really appreciate listening to your thoughts on art. They're filled with so many perfect golden nuggets of wisdom and are the perfect antidote to the typical artist "getting stuck in your own head" syndrome. I see a lot of negativity in the art community as well as a lot of lost, directionless artists and I just wish that each and everyone of them watches your videos as they're really balanced and well thought out. They've helped me a lot for sure and helped put my growth as an artist in perspective.
I'm one of those directionless, lost in my own mind artists and he's def helped me with it. Fully agreed.
my problem is that i give to much, as in "oh this person really wants to be an artist, but they need to learn fundamentals, all of them. and they should because thats mostly how you get better in the beginning" and then that person just never talks to me again.
tytywithasword I would talk to you ;-; and also I know that haha 💕
Doing that is the equivalent of your math teacher handing you the whole math textbook anytime you ask for help on a question.
Artist's already know there's a box to learn before they step out of it- but we aren't going to spend the next 10 years of our lives drawing only cones, cubes, and spheres even if that would be most efficient cuz' that would suck.
No fucking wonder they didn't talk to you again. You don't give too much in that instance, you give basically nothing at all.
@@lunarraven7987 well there name is mean pills..
That first part about asking critique is something I feel that is rarely EVER talked about. I go on the Newgrounds forums and there are a ton of people who just say "hey, can I have critique." At this point though, I rarely give it anymore since they either: 1, get angry and defensive, or 2, agree but don't actually do any of it. So it's like "okay, what's the point of even doing this."
People really need to get into specifics on what they need to know both for them and the person giving it, but very few are actually aware of this. ;w;
This is a video was presented very well!
Yaah, usually when I draw something I want to hear critique too and when I get one I always analize it and try to work on what I heard. But usually ppl either don't know how art even works or don't want to make me sad and just say "it's beautiful" lol.
"It's the BUTT-BOUNCE!

Me: *drawing Chibi for a card to give to a friend for their birthday* Omg the hands look like shoes the hands look like shoes *tries to fix it but NO CAN DO*
Me: maybe if I leave it and do the rest of the Chibi, then color it it won’t be noticeable?
After coloring in my derpy turtle anthro, I find that the hand still looks like a shoe
Me: Well no going back now I guess, since I’m using pencil it will just be a pain to rub out the color and I already know from past drama it won’t come out anyway
I bring the card to school the next day and give it to my friend, worried about the shoe hands
Friend: Omg it’s so cute! I love the colors and the hair how to you do this???
Me: *super stressed about the shoe hands* Oh uh just practice really...
Friend: aww I love the turtles! They’re so cute!
Me: Yeah I had to look up turtles because I haven’t seen them in a while (somehow) to get the anatomy right...
Friend: I love it! *we go into class and go about our usual lessons*
And from then on the shoe hands was a complete secret and nobody ever cared nor found out.
This really says something on how we view our own art
Often I get mentally frustrated when I hear my professors give vague or contrary critiques.
On one hand I appreciate the criticisms, on the other I get mixed signals- sometimes from the same critique that help extremely little.
Not all of my professors are like this but it can be a little disheartening to obtain critiques like this (especially on the rough drafts to your final project for said class).
I do also find that people who speak clearly or can see, to some degree, what you're trying to achieve with a(n) image(s) usually have the best insights as to actual ideas worth incorporating.
Honestly I haven't given it a ton of thought but that's my two-cents after watching this well made video.
Thanks for reading.
I like this video a lot :D
It presents its points in a way that's specific enough to help certain artists, but it's open-ended enough to help struggling writers as well such as myself
It genuinely helped a lot, thumbs up!
EVERYBODY HAS TOLD ME "just practice " AND I WOULD SAY HOW AND THEY WOULD SAY " i dont know "
you rock Mattias.
Beautifully communicated.
As my creative writing teacher put it “if your critique has made the person not want to write (or draw in this case) anymore, you have failed at giving a critique. You are there to help them, not make them quit.”
Sadly the critique I get on my animations are either:
The lines are messy
Or
Add color
(And yes I have added color now but not always and motivation gives up on me sooo easily)
And when I try to fix the lineart it takes like 8 minutes and I take like 30 seconds on the drawing and that would make me take 10 years just to make an animation idk how people do this
If I ask my friends they always be like:"Omg that is amazing, I COULD NEVER DRAW LIKE THAT" like, I know that you could never draw that, but please give me at least one point which isn't perfect to you!
It can be very annoying....
oh shit same here my man!
tell your friend that someone else drew it and what if they say something different. if not, it means they truly like it! but taste is opinionated, so if they critique saying they like it (again), you should try asking someone else to see if they say something different! :)
sorry lol im that friend and I can't find the flaws ;-; ask someone else ;-;

Before when I asked my friends for critique they'd just jokingly say my art was shit and move on, so it would discourage me from showing it online. I still did it a few years later and now I'm receiving better criticism that actually helps me get better, and now thanks to the video I know what to do to actually get more constructive criticism because I now know I have to give my friends a bit more base for their critique (although maybe they just didn't give a shit lmao but I'll try anyways)
I really love these videos, they help me with my art so much and give me a lot of confidence, and I'm so happy that content like this exists for people to see.
can u tell what anime your profile pic is from
Thank you! I have a similar problem with receiving critique on my writing! It's so rare for people on the internet to actually look at fanfiction with a critical lens. Maybe if I point out what I think is good or bad, it will help guide them. Hope it works! XD
Loved the video
One of my “friends” doesn’t know how to give critique, she is better at me than drawing even though I barely started taking it seriously 3 months ago. She tells me my art is shit but doesn’t say how to fix it, she draws then tells me that the way she does it is the proper way even though I can see clear flaws with it.
I was dumb enough to put my work on /ic/ on 4chan and hear several times I didn't improve at all in 8 years. Considering I tie my selfworth to my drawing it burned me out more than I had already been. I'm afraid that if I ask for critique I'll finally be dismantled as a fraud or an imposter with 0 drawing skills aquired in 10 years. I watch OTHERS received critique on youtube a lot and while I do learn from it, it also made me afraid of fucking up. When I drew, I feel like "oh this person would probably say im doing it all wrong now" and it makes me feel horrible. Like everything I've ever learned is wrong.
Apart from that, when I ask non artists for critique I most of the time just get pointed out that its anime. Lol. So no help there.
Im so happy that youtube recommended this to me and your advice are very helpful and i like how you talk because its like being in an art class
Your videos are like therapies, they are so helpful, thankyou
I was working on a piece that was severely crushed to the ground by someone I knew. There was a lot of negative opinions towards it, and little to no positive. It bummed me out, so I stopped making it for a while. After some time I got some constructive feedback from someone online with some background on the matter, and was a huge boost in drive and creativity.
Awesome video, and some great examples of how to approach, resolve, and improve criticism.
Awesome video as always!
nice! i really liked the point that if someone doesnt draw particularly well that they can still give good critique, i always disliked when people would say things like "if you can't do it yourself [better], then you don't have a right to say anything" because it feels like a deflection of critique and a way to avoid bettering yourself and even if you dont agree with a person's critique, it is still a good idea to hear them out anyway
excellent video, thank you mattias
Your videos are always so inspiring and informative. Thank you

I am happy i found this gem of a channel
Both my sibling and I love music but have entirely different relationships to it. I don't make any instrumental music at all, and struggle to keep a rhythm myself, but I often critique their music (at their request) and try my best to explain what seems wrong at any point... which sometimes they were already planning on doing. But it's always fun. I think something that helps a lot is that I've asked some variation of "so what do you want to do with it?" enough times to have a good idea of where they're going with a song, and even if I couldn't fix it myself, I've figured out how to figure out what's wrong.
All of which is a very long way of saying that the more practice you get at giving useful critique, the better at it you get.
Hey man that's all good advice! I'll make sure to send newbies your way. Keep it up!
good video man, i agree with all of the points in it
I think this should be a mandatory view before someone writes their first comment.
There are many ways to convey an idea or accomplish a goal and you can always just change your goal.
Fixing a problem can ruin something else. If that happens you can keep the old flaw or change the rest of your work.
A video game doesn’t need to be open world or linear.
A movie doesn’t need to have a hero or a villain.
A snack doesn’t need to be salty, sweet, sour, or spicy but it can’t be everything.
I love your content a lot. Im so happy RUclips suggested your channel.

I need critique y’all
The comment is not _bad_
Having no punctuations should not matter for RUclips but using y'all makes it sound weirdly southern (American)
I don't know what else to use other than "y'all" in this comment, if it were me I'd rephrase it to something more passive
Other than that, I think the rest of it is fine

I gotta say, its actually good to stay silent and allow the critic(s) to say stuff. Many times, I have replied to critics and they take my replies negatively (as excuses or things like that, and then it just turns into negativity and anger). Just actually note down what they are saying. Like, if you are going to get critique from say 4chan, I say the best advice is to not add fuel to anyone's fire; see what people have to say and jot it down and move on. I have to say that the most vocal critic is always the one who is critical about p. much everything about their tastes.
getting constructive critique from 4chan??
I don’t even draw but I’m so intrigued by this
Something I've struggled for many years is shading and lighting. My worst enemy.. because I don't know how to learn it well.
i see many comments talking about art and drawing, i just hope everyone who doesnt realise the subject of “art” is a big part of this video but it isnt everything, this applies to many things, whether it is another form of art or it is just the way you do your job. critique can help you improve whatever you are doing
I was at the edge of quitting drawing just because I didn't like my stuff. Your videos helped me a lot! Thanks for that!

I ask what they were aiming for.
Then I tell them what doesn't work.
Then I tell them what does work.
Helped me all 5 years through college.
Though it's hard to comment on something you just don't like.
I wish people would give me critique, but everyone’s always afraid to hurt my feelings. I try to break the status quo last time someone asked me if their art was good, but it ended up with a bunch of people yelling at me calling me rude.
I've always accepted critique, mostly because I wasn't an artist at a young age and I've been trying to draw to improve and make something good rather than just draw for fun. That's also why I've started with human anatomy and fundamentals rather than starting with stylized work or Anime. I don't draw as much as I should because of that fact but when I do draw I am god to honest looking for any critique or criticism I can get.
Learn the critique sandwich! Compliment-constructive criticism-compliment. Especially for new artists who aren't used to it yet
you shouldn’t have drawn such a perfect little lad for the critique example though
Gotta love the people online who just comment "bad" or "nice"
I love this little frog
I NEED CRITIC!!
One of the weirdest criticism I had was someone telling me my shading for something is wrong when it was right.

this misshapen frog is oddly endearing . . .
When you're having trouble drawing a frog while watching this video.
"This man is a physic god."
it's pretty lengthy so here's the short version. my friend is sensitive and played the victim card because she doesn't like how i critique.
my friend, Aiya, and i have different views on art critiques. im a more colorful cartoony style. she's a more working on graphite realism. I've been working longer on drawing and am a lot more open to showing my art and stuff. this comes into play later.
i managed to encourage my friend, Alli, into drawing and yesterday she sent us a drawing she made. i at first complimented it and told her she did really good. then i said i grade it a 86% and went on to point out a few things that needed work. like the background blended into the character too much, and the wings were different sizes so i suggest practicing abiy more and using a reference. stuff like that. when i was done i expressed i was really proud of how well she was doing. Alli showed zero signs of offense and was actually very thankful for the advice. Aiya on the other habd fussed at me for being mean and hurt Alli's feelings. Me, being debate lover I am, asked her how she would have critiqued it. she repeated many of the points i made just in a not as clear way. she also told me that my point on the wings could be wrong and they were probably supposed to be like that. Alli drew one of her gacha OCs meaning the character came from an app we all had and I can tell you it wasn't on purpose.
Aiya then told me that the main reason she didn't like my critiques were because I was pretending to be some top tier designer critic.
I asked if we could just agree to disagree and she told me no. She wanted me to understand that I was being insensitive to Alli and when I showed screen shots of Alli being completely fine with it she said, how is that any evidence. People lie about how they feel all the time. When I told her to calm down and be realistic, she told be she was sorry that she got into her feelings and is just an emotional person. She does that a lot. She'll get mad if we aren't online or if we are busy. She'll start acting like we are bullying her or something. I told her to just get back on track to the original conversation and she got mad at me for saying mate because we aren't from an area that commonly says that. i tend to like using slang from other stuff. i like having a diverse vocabulary. long story short she told me she doesn't to talk anymore.
Break ur friendship with her
"non consensual way of getting help"
I think one of the biggest things that scares artists, is the negativity specifically. There's a lot of people who only point out negatives when critiquing, and oftentimes very harshly, but we need to remember to include some positivity as well, so the receiver of the critique doesn't feel like it's a personal attack. It doesn't need to be sugarcoated; a simple "You seem to understand colors very well, _but_ the way you drew her face doesn't line up with the rest of her head" can do wonders to make you seem more approachable as a critic/critiquer (whichever word you prefer).
Also, I see people ask "How do I draw hands better?", or something similar, and all anyone has to say in response is "Practice". I can draw 30,000 hands, and never improve unless someone tells me or shows me where my mistakes are, and how I can fix them. "Practice" is not a cure-all. You can use the same recipe in cooking again and again, until you have it memorized, but it won't make the recipe stop tasting like shit unless someone tells you that you need to cook the garlic and replace half of the sugar with salt.
Yeah. Whenever I look up how to draw a certain thing, the answer is always to practice. I have been practicing but it doesn't look right! Tell me what I need to fix, not to practice!
I also would suggest "this [phrase, colour, note] feels [emotion, thought, feeling], which conflicts with [contrasting phrase, colour, note], was that intentional?" Telling someone that they've perhaps mislead the feeling of their work, say with a harsh red when it's supposed to be a calm piece, will really help people be tonally consistent, but also the "was that intentional?" flips the critique from you telling them to them thinking; maybe it was intentional, in which no change is required, or maybe it wasn't and it makes the artist think about the tone of their piece
Honestly i usually afraid to give critique because i don't know if things that seems wrong for me are actually mistakes or were intentional details and i'm supposed to feel like that.
this frog..... its too beautyful for my eyes.......
Does anybody know of an online website to receive critiques?? I need theeem

It's not much, but any form of communication is really appreciated!
Art teachers and normal people critiquing your art is really different. They’ll tell you where you can make it better but normal people are like: yeah it’s bad it looks weird but I don’t know how to help you.
3:27 I believe the academic term is "lady lumps", according to anatomist Dr. Stefani, PhD.
My favorite part of art school was critique. I'm joking of course, because every critique was little more than silence. I don't know if people thought that their opinions didn't matter, or disliked me, but I got the distinct impression that critique was pointless due to people being too meek to speak.
It makes me mad when people say there own art sucks so if someone insults them they don't feel bad it's sad

So, may i ask how are we supposed to react to the critique properly? I feel like it was only mentioned in the video, without being explained in detail.
