This is the Grand Final of the Mario Kart DS World Championships 2023, between myself and @2xxl. (2xxl) from Japan. This is an annual tournament hosted by the Mario Kart DS Network - join the Discord server here: / discord

The rules were as follows: all 20 of the selectable 'online' tracks were played out in order, from Figure-8 Circuit to GCN Yoshi Circuit. Items were used freely. The first player to reach 11 track wins is crowned champion.

why do players go the sides when they are about to get hit instead of continuing going straight? Is it avoid falling of the track?
When you don't have a protective item like a banana or a green shell, you can manipulate an incoming red shell's trajectory by having it crash into the wall with you. It's not always a 100% success rate, but it's slightly faster over tanking the hit.
@@mkdsabelred shells just go to the side of you in this game unless you are turning. Another reason why constant snaking and prb helps.

What is PRB? :)
PRB (Prolonged Rocket Boost) is an advanced technique performed by retaining the perfect rocket start boost through chains of mini turbos. It allows the player to cut off-road sections of a track without losing any speed.

La verdad es que si... pero al final decidi dejarlo asi por las risas, ya que luego lo mencionaban los comentaristas (y se decia el score al final de cada carrera).

Completely new to competitive MKDS. Is holding an item at the back of the kart disallowed?
Due to some programming limitation (probably) you cannot hold items behind you in online races. It's very unfortunate but it's what it is for a game released in 2005.

Why are you playing MKDS 1v1s? The MK64 Community has 4-Player-Tournaments, which I very appreciate
This was the 1v1 tournament from the World Championships, with there also being a 2v2 bracket as online play supports up to 4 players. Don't know what MK64 has to do here, good for them I suppose?
