Aretha LIVE in her prime! YES!!! The mark of a TRUE singer is sounding as good in concert as, if not better than, recordings! And The Queen DOES!!! What a treasure this video is!
I was there that night in July The show opened with Tower of Power, Then King Curtis, And then the Queen Aretha Franklin the best show I ever went to at the Fillmore. And Ray Charles coming out at the end.WOW!
This was a spirit filled concert. Aretha was definitely a national treasure to this planet and lives on forever! Thank you for using your talent to save lives Aretha. Your work on earth is complete, but the legacy lives on and touches everyone who comes after you.
Wow! Aretha, Queen of Soul! This is a treat! You know you're gifted if you a great in the studio and live! What a beautiful voice! My favorite female artist!❤
This must be one of the greatest concerts ever recorded. I wonder what music historians have to say about it. I am just transcended listening to her and her band and watching the feeling.
oh mannn, I just saw another short version and here you are with the whole shebang. I just can say I was there that night for it all, and it just was one of the most amazing nights and performances ever for Aretha. She had that audience, just slayed em. This is San Francisco, the Fillmore Auditorium not Fillmore West, and it was an incredible place, time, performance, band, audience, everythannnng. Whew. King Curtis, the back up singers, and of course the master of entertainment, Bill Graham. What a night
A wondrous recording shared by Simon Sottocorno !!! Such a treat - everything about it is significant :: #arethafranklin , the #fillmore , #sanfrancisco , & the era...
Thank you Simon ...I remember my mother getting this album back in '71...I was only 9 at the time but I just LOVE this!! And to actually see the performance...fantastic !!
Aretha sounds in GREAT voice and at her soulful best! I disagree with Missy Roberts above comment. By the time Jimmy Lee came out, cigarettes had taken toll on her voice which made it raspy and thicker. She still was able to deliver tho! These songs sung on this recording where also songs of the day Make It With You, Love The One Youre With...were also for the audience of Fillmore West! So its all appropriate. The audience ATE HER UP!!
One of her best live albums other then Live In Paris I love to hear her sing live but ain't nothing like it when she sits down at the piano and sings...#TheOneAndOnlyArethaFranklin...#ForeverAFan...🎤🎤🎤🎹🎹🎹🎼🎼🎼
Band line-up from from concertvault.com : Aretha Franklin - vocals, piano King Curtis - sax Billy Preston - organ Cornell Dupree - guitar Jerry Jemmott - bass Bernard Purdie - drums Pancho Morales - percussion, drums Truman Thomas - piano Brenda Bryant - backing vocals Margaret Branch - backing vocals Pat Smith - backing vocals Andrew Love - tenor sax Wayne Jackson - trumpet Roger Hobbs - trumpet Jack Hale - trombone Jimmy Mitchell - baritone sax Lou Collins - tenor sax
poplife123 Bernard Purdie -Drums Chuck Rainey - Bass Ray Charles was said to have turned around his private jet to attend the last hour of this concert. Bernard Purdie's biography (Let The Drums Speak) gives a great documentation of the back storey to this gig, a gig that was a stand out highlight of his career (his words) - a man who was on more than 4000 recordings.
I wish I had found this powerhouse performance by the Queen of Soul and her entire band. Billy Preston and King Curtis and Ray Charles! And the backup singers and musicians. This definitely lifts the spirits.
This is Soul, likewise the best damn singer/voice ever! ARETHA can like nobody bring tears (literally) to my eyes. When you listen to this stellar performance from the queen herself, don't you ever forget the backup she got!The musicians are always the ones that got side noted and the ones that never get their credits. CORNELL DUPREE, BERNARD PURDIE, BILLY PRESTON, THE MEMPHIS HORNS (Among others) and especially KING CURTIS are the true unsung heroes here! When RAY CHARLES enter the scene i completely loose it, no matter what music genre you're into. RAY CHARLES just tops everything! This true musical genius (Along with STEVIE WONDER) are without a doubt the best we humans can ever produce...Period!
There's not a lot to say after this...tragically King was murdered in NYC by a dope feind in July a few months later...very sad but at least this survives. If not the GREATEST show at FW has to be ONE of the greatest ever..by a miracle we have the audio and now the video...simply enjoy this forever...RIP IN PEACE..ARETHA,RAY and KING....
@LaWanda-z6d You know" la wanda" we realize that it's a waste of time to even comment on theses things .Suffice to say WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOU OR ANYONE HAS TO SAY ABOUT ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD,PAST,PRESENT OR FUTURE. " when we're u born"!!?!?!?!?!? 🙂😎😅😁😄😂😁😅😆😁😄😂🙂
If somebody, now in 2015, after Satchmo, Ella, Billie, Duke, Bird, MIles, etc; ask you what jazz or blues means - in the deeper meaning of the word - need just listen this marvelous artist and her terrific version of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLE WATER. Then, she/he, never come back to her/his first belief......
This was a pivotal time for Aretha. The Filmore in San Francisco had the cream of the crop of Music Legends perform. Also this was an "alternative" audience. Most were of The Caucasian Persusasion who also did tours of Vietnam. Also San Francisco holds a very important part in LGBT History. They did Tales Of The City in the 1990's and Frank Butterfield's Books at least his first Book An Enchanted Evening took place in San Francisco.
BILL GRAHAM the ultimate concert impresario insisted that his audience be exposed to all great music it unites us never to divide us from BUDDY RICH KING CURTIS /RICHIE HAVENS /JONI MITCHELL best sound system /light show /spotlight pure reverence to the art nobody did it better ladies and gentleman the queen of the gift of universal language of music i present to the world ARETHA FRANKLIN RIP
Wearing nothing but a plain ol' dress with a rag around her head...but yet still giving a performance 10 times better than the hundred thousand dollar performances of present day. Didn't have to reveal any cleavage...didn't have to twerk...and didn't need a reality show to promote her sound. Just classical talent...that's all she needed.
Ken Martin: That's a pretty funny comment - you praise her plain manner of dress as opposed to tasteless over-the-top cleavage-revealing "present day" performances. You must know that Aretha was notorious for her own tasteless and/or cleavage-revealing outfits herself in her future years. (Perhaps that was your point?)
Si king for b.b. kin puedo, solo gente como she, merece la pena albert, only people aliked, yes we can.Ella was look my mather what voice, onliment mama maik matts malasai luz propia start.
I always wanted to see this concert. I was a teenager in 1971 & living in South America, when I heard Spirit in the dark from this concert on the radio, I went crazy dancing in our living room. I bought the album live At the Fillmore West in 1972 when came to live in NY. Thank you for posting, great I enjoyed. (The Queen & Brother Ray).
Greatness 💖
A Gift from God that was available nowhere on the Internet, in its full-length version. This is EPIC
Enjoy Queen Aretha.
Wow! I am 57 and retired. Bought this album back in the day. Thanks is not enough for this gem. More like Hallelujah is what I feel. Thank you Sir.

My goodness, that voice. Just amazing.
I was there that night in July The show opened with Tower of Power, Then King Curtis, And then the Queen Aretha Franklin the best show I ever went to at the Fillmore. And Ray Charles coming out at the end.WOW!

Thank you so much I love Aretha the Queen of Soul..☺☺
King Curtis on sax, leading the band
I had a copy of this on CD and it miraculously disappeared. This made a rainy NYC day quite BRIGHT!!
I wish I had found this powerhouse performance by the Queen of Soul and her entire band. Billy Preston and King Curtis and Ray Charles! And the backup singers and musicians. This definitely lifts the spirits.
When Aretha Franklin stepped into that audience - it gave me the chill bumps!
I personally pray this film can be restored correctly before I transition upwards.
