Today’s episode is light on projects, but full of good conversation. Join me for some cozy knitting (and crochet!) chat and drop me a line if you feel inspired. I love to hear from you!
Also, pardon the darker lighting. It was a gloomy day with very little light outside. It was certainly cozy though!

I really like the color blocked sweaters. The crux is that they look better with the light color on the top and the dark color below and you made already such nice progress. Most men like to wear more darker pants, blending in with the darker part of the sweater looks better than broken up with a light collar and floating above are the dark shoulders. I don’t know if that makes sense. I also like the one that is one color around the shoulder and turns into a striped sweater. Planning and figuring it out with our knitting is so much fun.

re: "voiding the warranty," I think one of the things that has kept me hooked on this hobby for much of my lifetime is the process of troubleshooting, critical thinking, and adapting once you embark on a pattern. Because of my body proportions, I often find myself making my own adjustments to patterns as I'm knitting them to give me more chest room, shorter hem, etc. and it's honestly a little fun to solve all the problems that come in the aftermath; what stitches I added that need to decrease later, modifying row counts- although playing yarn chicken when my adjustments throw off the yardage does give me anxiety, LOL

The pattern with the stripes on the chest, and the first one with the black and gray color blocks gave me flashbacks to high school in the late 90s😂. I love them! But the designs reminded me of sweaters the guys all wore.

Oh Sophie, I totally know what you mean. I feel like striped men’s sweaters soo easily dip into that style genre. 😅 I don’t know if you had anything like this, but we had Sadie Hawkins dances where the couple wore the same clothes or whatever to the dance…those sweaters seemed to be the go-to. 😂🤣😬 Ah, the 90s.

Love the color blocking, especially with varied size stripes or could also do bands just on arms and not on body? When you were saying how you didn’t like men’s sweaters to have a boat neck all I could visualize was an 80’s J crew magazine with guy wearing blue boat neck, white pants, and dockers shoes….ah the good old days 😂.

I have watched, read and tried to absorb many designers' ideas for how to 'modify' or 'create' your own patterns but your one from column A, one from column B, etc. makes the most sense in terms of execution. I like the first 2 color blocking ideas and would buy more yarn to suit your total change in direction from the original. Love your down to earth, practical approach!

I love all the stripes that you’ve shown on your Pinterest link. While I love the look of the stripes in the raglan section it doesn’t sound like you do… so do them lower. Start them across the chest and do a few thin then a few larger and finish with thin again in all the 3 colours.

I used up some of my acrylic yarn crocheting a basket, with handles, to hold toys I handle to hold my nephews art supplies that I have for when they visit. It is sturdy, colorful and something they can grab when they are here. Since it was made with 3 stands of yarn it is really sturdy. I am in the process of trying to figure out the best way to attach yarn to kitchen towels in order to crochet a tab for attaching the towel to a cabinet or appliance to keep it in place.
Lately I have seen more patterns for crocheted garments. I may have to see how I feel about the drape of the fabric in a crocheted garment.

You might want to take a look at the Kinsan Sweater pattern from Moon & Turtle by Kiyomi & Sachiko Burgin! Obviously you don't need a pattern to work from, but it's a striped top down raglan and they provide I think 12 different striping options for ways to work up three colors. It's amazing how much small tweaks in the way you stripe can have such a huge impact on the look of the sweater! There are a bunch of finished projects on Ravelry, so you can see how a lot of the variations looked finished on both men and women. It's a pattern I highly recommend as a great DK weight top down raglan to have in the library, well written and highly customizable.

Happy Sunday, Tayler! I loved knitting while watching the podcast tonight. At the end of your podcast is a photo of you wearing a very high-contrast nautical looking shirt--could do that with hubby's sweater and even have a different colorway in the middle--dark/light stripes top and bottom, then dark/gray stripes in the middle? Love the Sundance throw--wish I was not in a ban from buying new yarn right now, but I do have a baby blanket to crochet for my own new grandbaby--and her Christmas stocking to knit! Oy! Thanks for sharing--always fun to watch!

I knit the Cozy Classic Raglan sweater twice using 2 different colors. I did the yoke and body in one color and switched colors and did the sleeves in the second color so it looks like I am wearing a short-sleeved sweater with a different colored long-sleeved shirt underneath. One one of them the body is a solid maroon and the sleeves are a speckled blue and on the other the body is a speckled brighter yarn and the sleeves are a solid color. You could always add a stripe at the bottom of the body and/or sleeves if you need to use more yarn but want to tie them all together.

I like the “nautical” placement of stripes. To combine the look of color blocking and the stripes, make the stripes thicker in the same locations as the nautical stripes on the body and sleeves. I love deciding stuff on the fly but I also way over think things. I think the first step is deciding the order of the stripes based on the contrast of the colors, doing the B&W check. Given the differences in lengths of each color, that itself may trim the options. Then measure the length as you cake the balls to give a proportion estimation for how thick/thin each stripe could be. Then busting out some graph paper or excel to play with widths! I've used numbers from the Fibonacci sequence to determine quilt designs and it approximates the golden ratio. Really cool effects.

    • @springsong2212
      @springsong2212 Год назад

I was searching the comments for mention of the Fibonacci sequence. As a weaver, I've learned the power of this sequence for striping from online teacher extraordinaire, Jane Stafford. It's helpful in providing a set number pattern that is pleasing, but that can feel quite asymmetrical.

as far as the striping goes, i really liked the second- and third-to-last 'nautical' designs. i think the narrow striping around the midsection and waist creates a really nice slimming effect that i think would accentuate broad shoulders and work very well for a masculine design. not to mention it's just a really nice looking design element, and would limit the amount of CC yarn you'd need to use.

Based on the amount of yarn you have I would be inclined to make matching graduating stripes with the base yarn between them thin to thick and back or just thin to thick based on the amount of yarn you have or the color palette. Something to consider.

For your husband's sweater, the first item on your Pinterest board is actually a (free) knitting pattern, but the pin is in German so probably the pattern is in German as well. I like the one color yoke on your husbands sweater. Then maybe a few stripes later. I'm kind of the solid color person. I think stripes are a personal preference. The yarn color is gorgeous. I love your sundance throw. I am thinking about something like this. The Mandela acrylic yarn is pretty and makes it easy. I'm also looking at the Mulberry blanket too. I need to get the corded Tunisian crochet hook first. I am working on a baby blanket out of Bernat Baby Velvet. Like velour. The issue I'm having with it is, it's so soft and stretchy that I'll look at my knitting 10 rows later and find gaps from the yarn not feeding through my hands right. Or spots where it looks like I dropped a stitch and I will un do that stitch back to where the stitch is wrong. My solution for any thing that I miss is, I'll tie the stitch off and then I'm going to crochet or embroidery flowers over the top of those spots on the blanket. I'm ready to get back to knitting with some quality yarn, make a sweater! lol I was going to ask if you have yarn shops in your area? Not like Joann's or Michaels, but regular yarn shops. I have one close by me. I'm in Tacoma WA. and to get to good yarn I have to drive to the Seattle area, which is not bad, but not something I want to do regularly. Thank you for another great podcast. I look forward to all of them.

I do remember having a stripe dress in high school - lots of colorful stripes that I wouldn't dare wear now but that was when I was a skinny mini.... lol I do like the idea of embroidery on a blanket or top, or even socks. Many years ago I lived in the Seattle area. Wonderful video Taylor!

    About Lion Brand Mandala...
I don’t think Hobby Lobby carries it (mine doesn’t) but there are many other yarns with similar ideas. Caron cakes can get a bit expensive, but the color stripes are longer if that’s what you’re into. Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee sugarwheel cakes come in both cotton and acrylic. They should have almost the same gauge. Possibly thicker? Premier Yarns sells a cake called Swet Roll DK that I love! The yarn is soft and very comparable to Mandala. I think it is generally priced cheaper as well.

Again, triggered by you - I started the granny ripple on Sunday. I didn't have enough mandala so mine is going to be just one color (Knitpicks Brava Sport in tranquil). It's such a simple and easy to memorize pattern. And I've already chosen my next up - a 7 point star baby blanket (influenced by @NeedlesattheReadyPodcast).

The first sweater you showed is actually a free pattern … in German 😂 but maybe with google translator you can try to understand most parts of it, I think about making it for myself in some kind of way, it‘s a great inspiration and I know how to construct basis raglan, never thought about changing structure AND color 😊

Hi Taylor! I just discovered your channel and I wanted to say yours is one of the most practical and truly helpful ones out there!
I've been knitting about 3 years, I come to the craft after decades of garment sewing & quilting. I am left-handed and realized quickly I needed to reverse engineer pretty much everything, bit I'm making it work for me.
Some particularly helpful things I have taken from you are the recent things you said about using paper and post it notes and highlighting, oh that rings so true for me too! I have notepads, tape and scissors and homemade charts all over while I'm knitting. I was embarrassed about my low tech approach, so thank you for that.
Also I really like that you take time to explain how things such as reading charts and short rows differ whether you are working in the round or flat. As someone who reads charts the opposite direction from everyone else, that really let me know I'm doing it correctly. I am going back and watching some of your older episodes and you were talking about using mohair to mute down a loud variegated yarn, and YES I am totally going to try that. I made the mistake so many new knitters make - I didn't understand what that pretty hank was going to look like knitted up...sometimes, well let's just say it's disappointing. I was thinking of selling some of it, but now I feel I can salvage a good bit of it.
Lastly, I want to say I appreciate that you actually talk about knitting 90% of the time. I am weary of sitting through podcasts where they talk too much about their personal lives, or political opinions (ugh!!), or what they had for dinner, while I'm sitting here pulling on my face thinking for love of Pete, will you please talk about knitting!? And I'm fast forwarding trying to find the spots where the useful info is, and I have to put my knitting down, and just crap, life is too short. And you never do that, so thank you very much!
P.S. we have similar taste in sweater patterns, too! ❤

I love that you combined two patterns for your husband's sweater - the stitch count can be tricky with raglans, I usually use some online calculator tools (e.g kniterator ) that use your measurment and stitch gauge to calculate the stitch count - but it's not always working properly.
Also, the crochet blanket looks stunning! Love the colors and I am tempted to crochet one too

I am liking color blocks wide stripes at the bottom lately for top down sweaters so that way you can adjust the color or stripe width and decide if you want to add color to sleeves as you go and as you change your mind( or is it just me???) You have a mostly finished sweater still

I love the nautical navy blue and white design. With the top 2/3's solid, and the stripes starting lower down. I'm going to make my own stripe sweater so this is really interesting to me. Also, you said your husband has broad shoulders I think the dark color up top with the stripes lower down would emphasize his shape in a good way. I love your podcasts Taylor, keep them coming.

Thank you for including all show notes in the Description section. It is much easier for me, so I guess others mentioned that it was their preference as well. I'm working on a Joji L sweater now, and it's hard for me NOT to make modifications.... new though I am to top-down knitting. Thanks for the tips for doing the yoke increases and distribution of stitches. That will come in handy! (And I liked the nautical striping on the navy-white sweater you showed, it was classy but simple... and you could incorporate the different colors for each or some of the narrow stripes, not just the one color.)

Since you started your husbands sweater with the dark colour I likely wouldn’t do anything colour blocked. IMO they look better with the lightest colour at the top working towards darkest at the bottom. What if you left out the natural entirely and just did some striping incorporating the other two colours at the widest part of the chest? Striping somewhere in the bottom third might look cool. You could also try a random stripe generator and see if that helps at all.

  • @alyvincent5984
    @alyvincent5984 Год назад

What about colour blocking but instead of even proportions, have the sections uneven. Kind of like the last option, but with the blocks in the middle of the sweater rather than at the bottom. I also like the idea of having the colour change be after the yoke so that the stripes are horizontal.
Or, if you do stripes, make them wider than your examples, and maybe more random? Random widths and/or colour changes?

Love the nautical stripe groupings that start below the sleeve separation. You could always make one of the stripes in one of the groupings a third color for a little pop, if that's in your husband's taste. In my color-opinion, I think that since you've started with a dark color at the neck line, your options for color blocks are more limited. Do you think that using lighter colors as you descend the body would look off-balanced or top-heavy? I agree with you that the stripes across the raglan shaping looks oddly squared off. BTW, your podcast rocks.

Totally agree with you about not wanting the stripes on the raglan line. My guys always preferred striping over the pectoral region of a sweater. Just some thoughts.

Lovely crochet work and the mandalas make it so easy. I've never seen a granny ripple design before so I might have to give it a go.
I really liked the colour blocked sweaters but I get the issue with running out of yarn. Totally agree with not knitting the strips as part of the yoke that would give the angles. You would have to start the stripes under the arm holes for the desired effect as the other sweater appears to be seamed. Not sure the correct term for that type of join ...?

Hi Taylor, I am the complete opposite when it comes to knitting and crochet. I have been crocheting for 40 years and knitting only 5 years. I can make anything crocheted that you throw at me. I have only made one blanket and a few hats that were knitted. I think you should go with the nautical look with the striping of the sweater. It makes it look more classic and vintage. 60s or 70s vintage, not the 90s early 2000s 😉vintage. You are lucky that your husband wears what you make. My husband and my two younger sons won't wear anything knitted or crocheted. I made this, what was supposed to be a wolf, stuffed doll. My husband liked that lol but that was the extent. I used to sell my corcheted baby shoes and hats on Etsy a fews years ago, so it isn't like what I made was crappy looking lol I did that since 2012 when etsy first started. Well I will be following for sure to see what the sweater will look like when finished.

The first two “Inspo” designs are nice. The color blocking doesn’t have to be exact thirds: that's close to boring. Be sure not to start the second color too soon, otherwise you get a Star Trek Next Gen vibe; get those sleeves well-divided before the second color starts. Use the lt grey as either a dividing line between blocks, or as a “tease” that a color change is coming (like you colored outside the lines). I don’t know how better to describe it w/o getting verbose, but you’re good enough and smart enough to make whatever you decide to do work.
