From blood sugar and gut health to inflammation ginger has many people espousing its benefits. There are tons of folklore remedies using ginger for indigestion, headaches, infections. But is there any science to back this up?
In the Doctor’s Kitchen we want people to learn about the history of food, the nutritional benefits of ingredients so everyone can make an informed decision about their diet
Whether you choose to include more or less ginger in your diet is completely up to you, but I hope we can help our healthy foodie listeners to appreciate the science of this incredible spice.
Despite the poor evidence or lack thereof in some cases, there are some intangible benefits with all foods whether the science is there or not. Foods evoke memories, which impacts our emotions, our psychological states. There are many things that we can’t determine through looking at a clinical trial in isolation. So don’t be disheartened and remember to be intuitive about what you feel works for you
I do love cooking with ginger for its health and flavour properties. I add it to curries, stews and teas. And as we look to the science and discover more about its health benefits, I think you’re going to be inspired to use it more regularly in your diet too.

I live in Newfoundland Canada and I grow ginger in my greenhouse in summer. I start off the plants in my house in February and March and it grows well. I freeze what I grow because its too much to eat at one time and I enjoy it in cooking and tea all year long.

What is your method for growing ginger?

@@brendasmith9076 I get healthy looking ginger root at the local grocery store. I fill a flower pot three quarters with promix and lay the ginger on the soil. I cover it with one to two inches of pro mix and I water it. I keep it damp but not soggy and let it sit there until it sprouts which may take a month or more. When the danger of frost has passed I put it in a larger pot in my greenhouse to give it more room to grow. I water them in the greenhouse when I water my other plants. I give it some liquid fish fertilizer every three or four weeks. Last year I had some plants over six feet high. I leave them in the greenhouse until the days get colder in the fall and then I have a harvest of it. Its so exciting to see what you get in each pot. I look forward to it so much. If you dont have a greenhouse you can grow it inside under lights or near a window and give it a water mist now and then. Good luck to you.

@@brendasmith9076 I buy dry ginger from the grocery store, plant it in a flower pot and cover it with a few inches of promix. I water it but never soak it, just keep it damp. It takes a month or so before you see any sprouts coming up. When the weather warms up I take the plants out to my greenhouse, replant it and leave it there all summer. The plants I grew last year were over six feet high when I harvested them in November, It is the nicest ginger I have ever tasted, so fresh and delicious, I hope you have luck with yours. You can grow it in the house too under lights or near a window, It likes a misting of water now and then and every few weeks a bit of liquid fish fertilizer.

    Ginger mentioned in the Qur’an:
And they will be served with a goblet of drink blended with ginger...( Qur’an 76:17). The word zanjabil means 'ginger' in Arabic.
