First rock album I ever bought. I was 13 and it changed my life. And when you're a black kid growing up in the hood listening to rock, lets just say I didn't have a lot of friends. But I didn't care. RIP Scott. You were great.
A great song played live but one of my favorite recorded songs? No.
Sour Girl I like better.
Love this shit from the first time I listened to it
Your a music lover 👍
Hah it was my first album also! I was probably 10-11. Cheers brother
Black dude who loves rock and metal checking in. I feel your pain. Lol
You really can't go wrong with any song on this album. "Sex Type Thing", "Crackerman" and "Wicked Garden" will smoothly melt your face off.
I second that!!
Yes! also Down, Trippin on a hole in a paper box, Vaseline!!
Don't forget about "Piece of Pie" and "Where the River Goes"
Whole damn album is fire
This album and AIC Dirt are my all time favorites. You are 100% correct.
Wicked Garden is another great song on this album.
The whole “Core” album is amazing.
I think you will like the songs Vaseline, Big Empty, and Down. And Trippin on a Hole is an iconic 90s song.
🔥
Yes! These☝️
I LOVE “Trippin’” - thought I was the only one :)
@@ronskopitz2360 tripping on a hole just gets it all the way around.
The fact they haven't done Vaseline yet is a crime.
There was a time where STP, AIC, and Peal Jam was all i played. Love those guys.
Add Soundgarden to that list and we can hang out.
Still play em all a lot 👍
Add Nirvana and Soundgarden and you got me from age 13-16
2 months is just the beginning. Mine died March 2015 and I have never recovered.
These three were my favorites of the Big 5. Scott, Layne and Eddie were all I played for a hot minute!
Cool thing is that Scott recorded the intro by singing into the pickup of a guitar instead of a regular microphone. You can find a clip of it on RUclips. In live performances I believe they would recreate the distorted vocals with a megaphone.
Now there's a fun fact I didn't know! Thanks
Live Scott sang through a mega phone , so cool
Actually the thing that Scott used was a bullhorn, megaphones are those things you see cheerleaders using on the sidelines of football games.
Y'all need to check out more STP, this album is amazing. Check out Cracker Man
I second Crackerman like a motherfucker
Agree, one of the best of the 90's
Cracker man mtv unplugged is probably my favourite song they've done
This was definitely their best album imo, could go front to back with it and repeat with no regrets
Has to be a “wet my bed/cracker man” combo reaction since they go together.
RIP Scott Weiland, thankyou for the memories, what a voice!
This song was such a perfect opening track to an album.
I remember purchasing this as a cassette from Best Buy in the summer of 94’. The beginning vocals, which were recorded by screaming directly into guitar pickups, comes in a bit low, which causes you to turn up the volume. When the music comes in, it’s like a 👋🏼 in the face.
This is one of several 90’s rock albums that blew me away.
I bought it and stuck it in while my mom went into a store. I heard the first line and turned it up and it blew the speakers when the full sound came in. Oops.
Heard this one in my buddies car in '94.
Album had just dropped and he was like "Have you heard of Stone Temple Pilots?"
"No. They any good?"
(Buddy plays lead track)
"Ho-lee F***! Play that again!"
Early 90's were frickin magic for music.
@@anthonyzbikowski529 That whole album is so good. I had pretty much the same experience. Someone popped it in, first riff plays and I'm likes, "Who is this?!"
Amazing
I got it from Music Trader…miss the hell out of those!
I think Big Empty is big and epic exactly the way you guys are liking, huge chorus. Promise you'll love it.
Fully agree. One of my favorite STP tunes.
That was my favorite too
Some soundtracks make a movie better than it actually was. "Big Empty" along with numerous other tracks made The Crow an iconic cult classic.
its so solid
@@jimschlegel5150 Totally agree, I listen to that album at least once a month. All those solid 90's bands that most people don't know about... What a shame. But I think they should definitely do Big Empty and maybe the whole Crow Soundtrack sometime in the future.
I absolutely love Stone Temple Pilots. Them and Alice and Chains put out some of my absolute favorite non-metal music in the 90's.
“Trippin on a hole in a hole in a paper heart”
"Down" by Stone Temple Pilots is a good one.
Way back when from the intro I thought it was an AIC song.
That is their heaviest song, right?
@@wes8723 I’d say “All in the Suit That You Wear” is STP’s heaviest song
So many SONGS to CHOOSE From. "SIN", "WICKED GARDEN", "SEX TYPE THING", "SILVER GUN SUPERMAN", "VASO-LINE", " CRACKER MAN", "BIG Empty", "PIECE Of PlE", "LOUNGE FLY", "SOUR GIRL".All GREAT SONGS.
Also Lady Picture show and plush
Don't sleep on Still Remains
The whole album is a solid 10!🤘
Trippin on a hole
Always wild bass lines with them. Main songwriter is the bassist and he makes it count
Robert is a beast on the bass!!
Did he slap to get those accents, or just pick really hard?
The slaps in that chorus sound so great and are so well placed.
@@ericheil991 i think he slapped
@@jefftezos oh he slapped all right
This entire album is outstanding and one of the rare albums that is great from start to finish.
What you can’t tell from listening to the song is how much of a great frontman he was. One of the best ever.
I highly recommend Wicked Garden by them!
100%. I think this would fit in with that edgy sound they like.
Arguably my favorite off this album. Good choice.
Wicked Garden is a banger of a song guys. Be great to see you guys review this song🎵
This!
the entire album Purple is a 90's rock gem. not a bad song in the lot, really represents the height of this band's powers.
Purple was truly special.
I agree though I like Core album better.
I like Core better but purple was great as well. After that I kind've stopped listening. But those first two albums were classics.
@@b.nash.7778 You missed some amazing stuff then. Tiny Music is absolutely amazing and rivals their first two releases.
@@rubicon-oh9km I've heard it but never quite grabbed me like the first two. Maybe its time to revisit it for another try.
You guys need to do this ENTIRE album!!! Seriously, one of the best albums to come out of the 90’s.. Would love if you guys can do a reaction to a little not so well known song off this album called “Sin”. Very underrated in my opinion. Keep up the good work
STP was unique because their main songwriter is really into jazz and their music has a lot of jazz chords. A lot of their music had a swagger that other grunge bands didn’t have. Check out Big Empty. One of my favorite songs from that era.
STP's entire catalogue ranges from great to insanely great.
Bought this album when I was 13. They were the most musically gifted grunge band, imo.
based on your taste for Interstate Love Song, i think Wicked Garden is your song! listen to this.
As a song writer and music lover, sometimes great hooks loose their potency if it’s over done. Sometimes less is more. I adore this song. I just wish it had a solo lol. The bass is amazing and fatty. It really makes the hits riff. Robert DeLeo, the bassist, is their secret weapon and so underrated. He is not flash but is literally the foundation of their sound. Great reaction
For more STP songs I would recommend "Silvergun Superman" and "Still Remains" both off the 94 Purple album. And definitely "Vasoline" off Purple too.
Still Remains in particular has one of my favorite lines in a song, "if you should die before me, ask if you can bring a friend..."
Also predicted the disturbing "drinking other people's bathwater" trend.
But I agree those 2 are the most unheralded gems on that record.
The 90’s was like..this is the new shit. And it came out of nowhere. All other music fell flat and had to change to try to get on the new wave. Some shit worked, but a lot of bands were finished. Just glad I grew up in Seattle in the 90’s.
Piece of Pie off this album. Best song on the album
Piece of pie is such a sludgy doomy underrated gem
Sin is my personal favorite from that album but Piece of Pie is a great song as well. This album is ridiculously good.
I think these two will love Loungefly.
@@Luvie1980 yeah thats another one I would recommend. Also Silvergun Superman
Hell yea
STP?! This is one of two, possibly the hardest song they made. On a good stereo this will melt your face! It'd take a month of daily shows to cover their vault casually, months to go in depth. I saw them open for Red Hot Chili Peppers about twenty years ago, and they played a shortened set. I wanted about fifteen more songs from them! They smoked that arena, and made it a challenge for RHCP to follow! In truth I was there to see STP. In fairness, RHCP are different and unique enough that they put on their own show and held their own. But STP was awesome. They rocked the arena for sure! Too bad Scott Wieland floated away. He had a lot of good music in him. Miss those days when all those bands were churning out one power album after another. I honestly got used to being able to listen to entire albums with no dud songs. Of course, many people don't consume music in that way anymore.
Piece of Pie is their hardest and heaviest song, prefect workout song
They, STP, have an incredible number of absolutely perfect songs! It’s too many to list. Pick any record, play it front to back, and you’ll feel like you’re drunk and high 😁
You gotta do Vasoline or Big Empty
Yes, these are the next two. Agreed.
Big empty for sure or Wicked Garden has that edgy sound they like.
Plush, Wicked Garden, and Creep are other bangers on this album. Such a good album. I really liked their “purple” album as well that came out a couple years later. Interstate Love Song, Vasoline and Big Empty were all really good songs off that.
I STILL pump this WHOLE album. My military "other mother" dudes put me onto this when it came out.
I’ll say it again and again……. Scott Weiland, fellas is so good, especially back then was simply fire!!! He and Layne were in a special place in the 90’s!! So sad that the drug situation took over both of these guys! The sad irony though is that their life experiences created masterful lyrics as often seems to be the case!!! Man……
Such an amazing and talented band. When these guys got together, it was magic. So much more than the sum of their parts.
Very few bands can cover Zeppelin as well as they could. Their Zep covers are legendary. Maybe Heart and Black Crowes have that level of musicianship as well. But it's a short list.
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
I saw The Tea Party cover Led Zep and it was fire!
@@fraz1617 oh yeah! Love the way this guy's voice sounds on Kashmir (listening to a live video from 2012). Whole thing has a very tight (almost TOOL-like) precision to it.
Nice 🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
Now there's finally a case of a band actually being underrated - The Tea Party! Love their entire catalog - so damn good!
The first concert I ever saw was STP in '96. They put on an amazing show.
I can still remember how for the second set they were slowly lowered down from the ceiling of the collussium while jamming acoustic Led Zeppelin covers. It totally blew my 16yr old mind as I had only recently discovered LZ.
STP was always a rock band thru and thru to me after that.
Honestly guys your commentary here on grunge and the state of music is 1000% on point
The whole album is fire. This is the first song on the album and is a hell of a start.
I think the song is perfect as is. They wrote it that way for a reason.
Stone Temple Pilots was definitely a great group, RIP Scott.
Sex Type Thing is a straight up banger you guys need to hear, and Big Empty is a very dynamic song with jazzy elements in the verse and a huge 90's chorus
On this album, Crackerman is the absolute must. Wicked Garden is great and even better on the MTV Unplugged version.
On the album Purple, damn near every song is worth reacting to. My personal fav is Silvergun Superman. Other great songs to react to are Big Empty or Lounge Fly.
Still remains! :)
@@andydzieciaszek586 : I love that song, maybe my second fav on Purple.
This song is a fantastic way to introduce STP to the world. Every time I listen to this song, I have to crank the volume way up!
Crackerman is my favorite song on this album.
I love the way you guys make very subtle comments on the smallest things that people don’t notice. it really shows how creative and knowledgeable you guys are when it comes to music
If anyone asked me what my favorite grunge record was, it’s this one. This album just flows so smoothly from song to song and there’s nothing off about it. Scott’s voice on this record is what really does it for me. He never quite sung like this again on future records. Maybe here and there he did but it wasn’t every song.
Don't get me wrong. I think this album was great, but Alice In Chains "Dirt" was the best grunge album hands down! :)
@@sparks3705 Well that’s hard to argue. Dirt is definitely another record that’s fantastic and I revisit quite a bit. AIC definitely has more of a unique style to their sound compared to STP, I’ll admit that. Honestly I can’t say you’re wrong, but just my personal preference to pick Core over Dirt, even though I’d hate to make that decision to begin with.
@@sparks3705 Bro...Superunknown, Nevermind, In Utero, Ten and you pick Dirt. Come onnnnnn dude
@@danielleclair1360 Hell yeah I do. AIC was a beast! But those other ones aren't bad either. Just prefer AIC's sound more than those others is all. And I can't recall skipping over any tracks on the Dirt album to which I know there are some crappy songs on those ones you listed. lol
@@sparks3705 roger
The harmonies back then with the lyrical depth was just unbelievable...especially vs. todays music imo. Good to see you guys put together another great video.
These guys were fantastic live. Scott was a hell of a showman. Had the pleasure of seeing them twice back in the 90's.
I'm with you George. Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains were my two favorite grunge bands back in the day. I know Pearl Jam and Nirvana were the two most popular bands during that era, but to me..... I thought STP and AIC where better. And any STP song you choose next is good, but "Vasoline," "Wicked Garden", "Sex Type Thing", and "Still Remains" are all good choices.
Agree, not taking anything away fron Nirvana or Pearl Jam, but AIC and STP are better, IMO, still like to jam to Evenflow or Breed
Agree with this 10000%
Agree. Soundgarden too.
Soundgarden
AIC superior to all. I agree
I heard this song everyday on rock radio and MTV and I loved STP as a kid.
Once again I found a new appreciation for the greatness of the song by this reaction.
This is what made 90s rock great. The melody, the heaviness and softness.
This band has been wildly underrated over the years. When they were hot and in their prime I was listening to STP. Every album has something special about it. The Grung genre itself was underrated as well. Every song with the guitar riffs and the drums gets me in my zone.
When the line "You can't swallow what I'm thinking" with the fire jungle drum beats is what gets me going. I love all the grittiness to grunge... or is it the grunginess?
Agreed. To me they had Zeppelin potential but got derailed by Scott’s troubles. Each album was doing something new the way Zeppelin did.
This reaction was AMAZING!!! You guys broke this down perfectly. Great job! 👍🏻
You guys provide so much depth and fresh insight to music I’ve listened to for decades! You guys are awesome!
This song CRUSHES! Keep digging into STP!
This whole album is amazing, you guys should review the whole thing.
I live for this youtube channel great work guys!!!
love your grunge and punk and metal reviews!!!
I stumbled across LIV with you guys reaction to Audioslave “Shadow on the Sun”. I absolutely love you guys! Could watch for hours! Keep up the good work!✌🏻
I sing the,...."I am smelling like a rose" part more than I do the actual melody.
I like that part the most. Honestly didn't even consider the actual melody the best part of the song, I just like singing part about the rose with the nasty guitar behind it. It's all-around a great workout song haha
Me too, it's my fave lol the "I run through the world thinkin' 'bout tomorrow" really hits for me too
How can they not like that part...its so sick.
Gotta check out "Vaseline" from these guys. One of my absolute favorites.
I have mentioned it in a few other reactions, STP put on the best performance I have ever seen in concert. They played 3 plus hours. After about an hour, all lights shut off and slowly you started seeing candles lit up everywhere. When there was enough light you saw a whole new ‘lounge” stage and they did an hour plus acoustic session. With our eyes adjusted, you could see the new stage lift up and they came back out and played another hour, regular non acoustic session. Scott sang pretty much the same live as he sounds recorded. It was an amazing performance.
I loved when you guys laughed at that part. Then I thought it's that vibe that keeps the song fun for me.
It’s a tragedy imo that you guys haven’t checked out more STP. Core & Purple are incredible albums from start to finish.
STP was the band that started my love for rock when I borrowed my Dad’s Core tape when I was 10 & listened to it on a road trip. They forever hold a special place in my heart.
I listened to this whole album on cassette tape when i was 13 years old flying for the first time. I will never forget it. Hit me to the Core 😎
I am so M’Fin happy you dudes hit STP again!!! They used to crush it live! I’ve seen em….
This is one of those bands that deserves a marathon of its own because there are just too damn many excellent songs they created.
Also congratulations on your channel. I've been a subscriber since yall had 5,000 of us watching you.
Listen to "Sex Type Thing" next from STP! Please!
Stp still hits. Lot of good points on creativity nowadays. After The Burial-Pennyweight creativity IMO
Yesss pennyweight is such an underrated song
@@jbass_1993 took me a roadtrip with nothing but that cd to appreciate it fully. Now its a go to
I don’t see the connection between the 2 songs, but yes, Pennyweight owns
@@bantzrayder8976 no connection at all. Ive just been on trying to get them to check out After The Burial. Lol they mentioned creativity and I just added that ATB are very creative lol
Please do wicked garden next, big empty or crackerman, those songs have those raw nasty riffs combined with the epic vocals and the melodious choruses you guys like so much. STP is amazing and they definitely deserve more exposure on the channel. Cheer guys!
You’re so right with your assessment of the state of the music industry. I think this is prevalent in all genres. Love your channel, and your love of music! Keep up the good work!
Gotta do Sour Girl by STP. Compared to the songs you've listened to by them, Sour Girl is out of left field. Such a deep deep song. And absolutely beautiful.
Scott Weiland definitely had the “it” factor. Such a talented singer. A genius frontman. He could captivate an audience. He was amazing with Velvet Revolver (w/ Slash and Duff from GnR). Watch his performance with The Doors. The Doors played a show years back with a multitude of singers, when Scott took the stage and sang Break on through (To the other side) the looks 👀 he was getting from Ray and Robby are nothing short of awesome 🤩 because he was perfect.
My prayers have been answered! I don’t even have to ask you guys to check things out because I know that you’ll eventually get to them on your own. Keep going guys!
This whole album is among my favorites of all time, glad I got to see them live once
Great reaction. Hope you guys get to 🔥🔥🔥"Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" 🔥🔥🔥
STP was the biggest band I’ve ever had the pleasure of opening up for. It was 1993 at the Trocadero in Philly. They were nice dudes. Big Chief also played and they were ok but the singer used to be in the legendary American Hardcore band, Necros. Y’all should DEFINITELY check out Conquest For Death LP by Necros. Battalion of Saints after that
What group were you in, Lucky Man?
Love you. Guys always did. Catching. Up. You men on point!! Period!!!!!!
Now this is what is was all about back in the 90’s. Always turn your stereo up as loud as it could get when playing this jam. 🤘🤘
This album has so many good songs. You should definitely check out "Wicked Garden" it's a bit harder and it has one of my favorite grunge riffs.
Absolute classic album. Every song is great.
STP music is filled with harmonies. That’s why I loved them
I was hella lucky to be 13 years old in 1991 when grunge hit, similar to those who were teens in the late 60's. What a time it was!
That whole album is a masterpiece. Song after song. Perfection. And they have an album called Purple that is the same way. Check out Kitchenware and Candy Bars, Still Remains, Piece Of Pie, Silver Gun Superman, and Meatplow. They are some of my favorites. STP is the best band outta that era. I used to think Alice N Chains but Scott’s songwriting abilities are untouchable.
I played out this cassette tape while cutting the lawn when I was a kid. This whole album was amazing.
Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart is a must. You guys will love it.
I have a 10" JL sub in my GTI, the way this song comes in when you have a decent setup sound system is unparalleled. It's just awesome. One of my favorite songs of all time.
'Sex type thing' broke these guys into mainstream.
'Wicked Garden' has another classic, melodic hook you'll both love🤘 this is a killer album!
Over the past two years, I have grown to really like STP. They are not flashy, they have the balls to soften things up sometimes but ultimately they are gritty. Definitely one of the great bands of Alt Rock. This was their most successful album commercially. I think if Scott Welland does not have this bad drug problem coupled with all of the infighting with the band, they become the greatest in the movement. I think exceeding Nirvana.
You guys are great! Always keeping it real 😎🤘
I hope we get a reaction to Wicked Garden someday, the groove in that song is superior
I love all STP's albums. I think the first 4 are the best but still enjoyed the las two.
I think that this is a great piece of songwriting; the balance of deep crunchy muscular riffs and soaring harmony in the chorus.
I think leaving you wanting for one more chorus is also emblematic of good song writing, as it leaves you considering listening to it again immediately. A lot of older pop songs were written to do this. Err a little on the side of shorter and leave you a little hungry right at the end.
Always loved Trippin’ on a hole in a paper heart and the instrumentation in Army Ants was always a favorite of mine
This whole album is a banger! Brings back some great memories so thanks for that!
I love that you took time to laugh at the intro cuz you can never hear it without context again! It really is funny by itself
It’s even funnier live where you can see him singing it into a megaphone
Even though this song doesn't have much lyrically going on, that groove hits hard, you just throw this on and jam out. Scott's delivery is what really puts this song over the top for me
You NAILED that 90s chorus bit. I've found myself returning to writing 90s rock-inspired music again. It really is the best.
I love that y’all get this music which was such a big part of my life and inspired me as a guitar player and musician for twenty five years. Y’all need to do more STP and please do Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave.
I feel their best song is "Sex Type Thing". It has that edgy but melodic combination almost to an Alice in Chains level.
I get what u'r saying with that comparison..
I find it interesting that Alice is the "grungiest" of them all. But, *a lot* of Alice isn't real grungy or heavy at all.
And, STP isn't even considered a grunge band by many bcs not evrything they do is grungy, even though some of the best grunge songs are stp songs.. It's all f* up.. Or maybe it's just bcs they'r not from Seattle? But, that's bs too..
@@nodaysback8390 ehhh, I mean if stone Temple pilots aren't considered grunge, then "grunge titans" Pearl Jam aren't either. Their catalog is a lot more eclectic than Stone Temple pilots. I mean their shit is alllllllll over the place
Absolute great song. STP brought together the metal and alternative kids back in the 90s.
I remember Sex Type Thing from playing GranTurismo 2 on my PS1 back in the day... then I bought Core on CD and heard it and was like COOL!!! It's from the video game!!! lol
You should definitely check out “Pretty Penny” - it shows a softer side to Weiland’s voice that I think you’ll enjoy!
One of my alltime favourites! I grew up with this kind of music! I am grateful!
This whole album rules! I'm still waiting to see another Clutch reaction guys... The Mob Goes Wild!
