    Fun fact: The phrase in 6:49 "Es war sehr schön und hat mich sehr gefreut." ("It was very lovely and I was very delighted.") was something of a typical catchphrase that the old Emperor would often use when talking about his opinion cultural matters. This started after a critic remark of the Emperor about the newly built court opera house caused one of its architects, Eduard Van der Nüll, to commit suicide. From then on, the Emperor, mindful of what impact his judgement could have, refused to give his unfiltered opinion on cultural matters and instead used this phrase, which - after a time - became iconic and one of his trademarks.

    Franz Josef was a tough old coot like his colleague Alexander III of Russia. It was a miracle he managed to keep the Empire together during his long reign. Truly one of the strong men of Europe.

      FJ I was tough, and he was also very tough on his military, as you probably know if your family served under his reign. No slackers allowed. They didn't tolerate a lot of nonsense. The A-H Empire was a highly militarized society, which is a large part why it held together so long.

    In contrast to the other films/series (Like Radetzkymarsch) this is from 50ties Austrian "Heimatfilm" era. An era of feel good nice story films of which many are set in the monarchy - The older Franz Josef tends to be depicted as an elderly father figure. It's mostly historicistic Romances and Romcoms. Romy Schneider was a staple of those films, though she developed into a serious character actress later on - and died too soon unfortunatly. Her most remembered part from that era is not from that film but from the "Sisi Trilogy", a set of three very kitsch romances that shows the early life of Empress Elisabeth as she marries Franz Joseph. So its a bit of an in joke, that Romy Schneiders character in this film meets the elderly Emperor. Some of the other actors also were part of the earlier Sisi productions.

    • @julbro8451
      @julbro8451 2 года назад +5

      Romy plays a much more sophisticated Sisi in the film, "Ludwig." I think she found that role very refreshing.

    A couple of historical details. The film was probably made at the Hofburg rather than in a set in a studio. If it is a set it is a very good reproduction. The desk on which the Emperor stands was normally occupied by the aide-de-camp. The emperor sat at a large desk to the right. On the aide-de-camp's desk was a log which indicated the names of people coming for an audience and what the issue was. You can still see these things today in Vienna at the imperial palace.

      I'm fluent in German. It is Austrian accent but unlike Swiss German it's more similar to Standard (High) German with a few changes in vocabulary. It can be hard to understand if one has learned standard German as a second language. In German it often depends how strong a local dialect is used. Pure Bavarian or Cologne dialect is very hard to Understand for Northern Germans, for example. It's easier for Americans to understand Aussies and kiwis

She put a composisition for a new march into the bread (one composed by her lover) to get the Emperors recognition for the new March (for his Deutschmeister Regiment). But because smuggling letters through bread to the Emperor wasn't seen as appropriate her aunt lost the contract as court baker. So the young woman petitions the Emperor to look at the new composition and to reinstate her aunt as the court baker. Naturally the elderly Emperor complies.
