This scene is where Supreme German Commanders Hindenburg and Ludendorff around Oct/Nov 1918 (who had exercised quasi dictatorial powers since 1916 since Kaiser Wilhelm was not a strong leader) drop the bombshell on him "that the war is lost and there must be an armistice". It is a shock because 1. The Army had resisted a negotiated peace on earlier occasions with reasonable demands (mistake). 2. The military had advocated for unrestricted submarine warfare in early 1917 which failed AND prompted the US to declare war which ultimately swamped Germany (HUGE mistake) 3. In only March 1918 the Germans had finished off Russia and the Eastern Front with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk thus acquiring farmland and transferring a million men to the Western Front. 4. The Germans had great success in their Spring 1918 offensives but had fallen short Overall, IMO, Hindenburg-Ludendorff mismanaged the war situation. They did not properly bring the civilian populace along (There was widespread hunger thanks to the Allied blockade). Also, Ludendorff was not a resolute man and was given to panic (Hindenburg was very old already about 70 and as later with Hitler did not choose the best course-he opposed Hitler but let him into power as President of the Weimar Republic as the "best" option). The German Army was suffering greatly but I have to believe resolute leaders like Field Marshal Blucher of the Napoleonic Wars and Moltke the Elder of the Franco-Prussianj War could have rallied the Army as the war approached German soil. Kaiser Wilhelm was a poor leader but he was also ill served by key subordinates like here.
I’m of the opinion that if Bismarck was still around there might not have been a general war at all,(in my opinion) he would have been able to contain the war to a regional conflict between Austria and Serbia through careful negotiations with the Czar…. And perhaps he could convince the Russians to pressure the Serbs to the negotiating table while he did the same with Austrians, this is just speculation on my part of course but it would have been in his character to prevent a war that would not have been in the interest of Germany,he definitely would have wanted to limit the influence of Britain and France particularly when it came to Central Europe. What was a peripheral issue but important to Germany was its overseas territories which being late in establishing a colonial empire was not very extensive in comparison to Britain,France and to a lesser extent Portugal,Spain and The Netherlands…Namibia and Tsingtao were the only “real” colonial holdings that Germany had but expansion was in the cards, especially now that the US have entered the game with its defeat of Spain and gaining Cuba and the Phillipines,Bismarck would have seen a general European war as disastrous on many levels…
@@54blewis You're completely right. No way Bismarck would have led Germany into a two-front war. On the colonial front you missed German East Africa, Togo, Cameroon, and a bunch of Pacific Islands (Marianas, Carolines, Samoa) but yes not very extensive.
@@lawrencewood289 thanks, but I only listed them as “real” because of the commitment Germany had invested in them though I’m aware of their other holdings…but again thanks for bringing up those as well..🤝
Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II were third cousins, both being great-great-grandsons of Paul I of Russia, as well as second cousins once removed, being descendants of Fredrich William III of Prussia. Kaiser Wilhelm was first cousins with George V of the UK and Empress Alexandra (Tsar Nicholas II's wife), all three being grandchildren of Queen Victoria. George V and Nicholas II were also first cousins, both being grandsons of Christian IX of Denmark. Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra, were second cousins, being great-grandchildren of Grand Duke Louis II of Hesse.
Yep. As Prussia was biggest and most powerful state within united Germany (from 1871) and with probably best army in Europe on its own, Prussian kings (Hoenzollern dynasty) were also German emperors (kaisers). Every other state within empire had it's own ruler and dynasty (kingdoms, grand duchies, duchies, principalities, free cities etc). Bavaria (Vitelsbah dynasty) was most important after Prussia, Saxony was probably third one. But Prussia was the big boss. After 1918, every royal family in Germany was disposed.
Exactly. After the German loss of the war Wilhelm abdicated. Moved to southeastern Pennsylvania and opened a large suburban shopping mall which he named for himself, His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm the Second, by the Grace of God, German Emperor and King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Burgrave of Nuremberg, Count of Hohenzollern, Duke of Silesia and of the County of Glatz, Grand Duke of the Lower Rhine and of Posen, Duke in Saxony, of Angria, of Westphalia Shopping Center GmbH. But that was not easy to repeat and signage cost overruns were killing him, so he shortened it to King of Prussia Mall and the rest is history. And now you learned something about business and history...I should have ordered a double cheese pizza with sausage to snack on while learning.
I don't speak German but mein Gott, such magnificent moustaches.
