  • Chasing the least worst forecast, me and my dad ‪@overthehillwildcamper‬ headed to the North Yorkshire Moors for a wild camp at Skelton Tower. A ruined 2 storey hunting lodge built by the late Reverend Skelton around 1830.
We parked the car at Saltergate car park on the A169, we then set off on the 3 mile hike for Skelton Tower passing the Hole of Horcum on route.
Once there I pitched my SilPoly MLD Trailstar and my Dad pitched his Durston Gear X-Mid 2p.
I then cooked a Spanish sausage and butter bean casserole on my Trangia 25.
A beautiful and atmospheric location for a wild camp.
    I hope you enjoy. 👍

This made for a great Sunday morning watch with a cuppa Steve... That's a cracking spot up there...✔️ Oh & then @ 10mins in, I lmao when Dave asked the Worcestershire Sauce question...🤣 Was sure it would be in the comments somewhere, but he beat us all to it...!😄 Gonna watch ya Dad's vid, once the dog's walked & fed...💯 Be interesting to know where all those ingredients actually came from...!??🤔 I've also become abit partial to having practice trangia master class cookup sessions in my living room...!😆 Why not, it's much better than standing in the kitchen, as I can sit on the sofa, watch YT on the TV & just cookaway...👍 Done quite a few good one pot meals now, so me & mutt can have a proper feed when I actually get out for a camp again... Best wishes...👊

Hi Kev. Thanks for the comment. Me and Dave really enjoyed reading it. 🤣
That’s a cracking idea with the living room Trangia sessions. Reckon you could video it and create a series out of that idea. I’d be watching for certain!!!
Just make sure you don’t knock the stove over 🔥 🚒 💨 😬
The thing is, the chief ingredient in Worcestershire Sauce is Anchovies. So that sort of Spanish 🤔
      All the best Kev. 🙏

Ok joking aside, I love these vids. I found this channel because I searched for inspirational trangia recipes for our picnics, but I had no idea I’d get hooked on the idea of wild camping. I was born in Yorkshire and this scenery really takes me back to my childhood.
So I have a few questions, maybe you can find the time to answer them at some point. Or maybe do a live / q&a session and we can all find out what you think about Fergal Sharkey…
    1. The en-suite milk bottle is a good idea. What do you do for more substantial projects? Do you dig a hole? Does the milk carton go home or emptied into a hole / drain?
    2. How exactly do you do the washing up? What happens to the dirty water?
    3. How do you filter and purify your water? I know there are many methods and kits, and I see you collect water on your way, but what works for you?
    4. What kind of van do you have for your base?
All the best, and keep up the great work.

    • @belowaveragewildcamper

Hi Phil, thanks for the message. It’s great to hear you’ve enjoyed the videos.
First of all I like Fergal Sharkey. When I listen to him being interviewed about river pollution he seems to be one of the good guys. I also like the song ‘my perfect cousin’.
      1. The milk bottle is the most essential piece of ultralight kit I carry. In the morning I redistribute the contents into the earth at an appropriate distance from any water source, as per Fergal Sharkey, and the bottle is taken home to be recycled. For more ‘substantial projects’ I dig a hole with my trustee trowel, fill the hole 😬, and recover. Once again this is done at an appropriate distance from any water source, as per Fergal Sharkey. The toilet paper is put into a nappy bag and then put in my rubbish bag to be taken home. Always leave no trace.
      2. I just boil a pan of water and get the thick of the pans and bowls. Then dry with a blue j cloth. I wash it all up properly when I get home. The water just goes back to the earth.
      3. I use a Katadyn Be Free filter. And that’s all. Once filtered I’m happy to drink it without purifying tablets or boiling. So far no gut rot 🤞
      4. I’m very lucky to have VW Transporter Campervan. I love it 🚐
Hope that helps Phil. Are you going to give the wild camping a bash?
All the very best mate 🙏
      Stephen

Hi Stephen, that’s good to know, thanks for your replies. Yes, I’m probably going to have a go in the spring time. I live in Sweden now so it’s a basic right in most of the country. But the weather is “a bit nippy” at the moment. It should warm up in a few weeks and we’ll try to get out.

Spot on Steve, it’s a great little spot to camp, I imagine it gets popular in summer on a weekend 🤣, food looked amazing 👌…I was out for a camp on Sunday too, winds were strong in the cheviots ☹️, then dropped to 5 mph during the night, then rain kicked in 🤣 looked like some good flat large spaces there, ideal for the Trailstar 👍. What camera you using now? Looked nice and sharp with some nice background blur, nice one, atb Mick 👍

For the cooking shots at night I’ve started using a Sony A7c as its low light performance is insane. Needs a tripod though.

Looked another belter of a dish that one, had the trangia out in nov, changed my fuel and it sooted the pans up big time…bit gutted really as I came home looking like I’d camped in a mine, black everywhere, I’ve read to add a little water, any tips on fuel you’re using? Nice chilled vid with your dad again👌🏼

    • @belowaveragewildcamper
      @belowaveragewildcamper  7 месяцев назад +1

Hi Wayne. Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Yeah, that’s a perfect winter camping meal.
When I first got my trangia I had a few issues with soot. I initially mixed about 10% water in with the fuel and it seemed to reduce soot but also seemed to make the flame burn not as hot. In a couple of cold windy camps I had bother getting the stove hot enough to cook a full pan.
Then I swapped to bioethanol (from B&Q) and that was much better and that all I use now. I abandoned the dilute with water method as I’m
Not convinced it makes much difference.
The thing that I know makes the absolute biggest difference with soot is the distance from The bottom of the pan to the flame of the stove. The higher the pan is in the flame, the more soot. So if you use the frying pan on The trangia you’ll get shit loads of soot. If you use a saucepan you’ll get almost no soot.
If I need to use the frying pan and I’m prepared for soot to form, I can make sure I’m careful about handling the pan so I don’t get soot on everything. I just get the bulk of the soot off with a blue j cloth ( or wipe the underside on the grass). It gets messy when you don’t realise there’s soot on The pan and before you know it you have it from arsehole to breakfast time.
So short answer, bioethanol and no other tricks. 🤣
