- Joined by my dad @overthehillwildcamper, we headed out for our first wild camp of the year. After parking the car at the Carey Burn in the Harthope Valley, we made the short ascent up to Cold Law.
Once there we dropped to a flat shelf slightly below the Trig point, where I pitched my new SilPoly Trailstar by Mountain Laurel Designs for the first time. My Dad was in his trustee X-Mid 2p by Durston Gear.
I then cooked the North African classic Lamb Tagine with couscous on the Trangia 25. Despite clear skies being forecast we had to dive back in our shelters due to heavy snow.
A great start to the year, I hope you enjoy and all the best for the new year👍
I was watching you cook thinking, ‘man, that looks top drawer!’ then the plot twist from your dad… you’re a professional chef! That NVQ never leaves you does it!
Hi Al. I keep that NVQ level 1 in
professional Cooking from Gateshead College close to my heart at all times. 🤣
All The best 🙏
Just subscribed and I'm so glad I did, amazing walk, thankyou for taking me on your journey ❤️
Thank you. It was entirely my
pleasure. Much appreciated 🙏
Fantastic again chaps 👏
Cheers Dan. Much appreciated 🙏
Great camp. I admire you always cooking outdoors in these conditions. I don't think my hands could work in that cold.
Cheers John. Loved your Helvelyn camp. All the best 👍
Happy new year to you and your dad, top class cooking 👍 great adventure, really enjoyed that.
Nice one Karl. Much appreciated. All

Hey, thank you. That’s much appreciated. 🙏
Class video mate love the shelter and how in depth you go with the food my mouth was watering lol
Cheers Lee. Much appreciated. Aye, I absolutely love cooking. Love eating even more than cooking n’all.
All the best mate. 🙏
Ps loved you recent tent review. It was so professional. By you’re some Paul Messner. 🤣
@@belowaveragewildcamper done alot behind a camera in previous job lol
Good video, and it looked a great spot to park the tents.
To misquote Monty Python, 'That Tagine was good enough for Jehovah.'
The Cheviots look good bet for my first wild camp.
Don’t think you could go far wrong. Park at Hethpool and there’s a lot of options from there. Give me a shout if you need any advice etc. all the best 👍
never seen your content before or a tagine cooked on the hill, top drawer :)
Nice one Jim. Thanks for giving it a watch and leaving a comment. Much appreciated 🙏
Class video as usual! How full the pan was there was giving me second hand anxiety 😂
Yeah, me too. Far too much for just me and the owld fella. Made a right mess of my Trangia. All the best Dan 👍
Thank the Lord for Gateshead College!
Amen 🙏
I got so into the cooking I forgot you was camping😅cheers for your hard work mate I,lol sub.
Nice one Gary. We have Delia Smith to thank for that. 🤣
Much appreciated mate 🙏
That’s what a like about lightweight backpacks, ya can just stick owt on the outsides and in the front netting, that’s how I’m normally heading out too 🤣
Trailstar looking spot on mate, love the orange, looks like a nice high pitch👍 had mine out first camp on yeavering a few weeks ago, love it⛺️👌. Good god that tagine looked nice 🤪. Nice bit of snow coming down there, class.
Spot on Steve, atb Mick 👍
Nice one Mick. Really pleased you’re enjoying your new Trailstar. Looks class.
All the best mate 👍
Nice video, belter of a camp and a great start to 2024 mate. I need to get myself motivated. It’s hard like you said.
Happy new year to you and your Dad Dave.
ATB 🖖
All the best Wayne. Yeah, I always find the New Year to be a melancholy time for some reason. Just need to plough on and hope the feeling fades quick. It usually does. Happy new year mate 🙏
Great trip with your dad, lovely to watch! Nothing like lots of hot lovely food on a cold night! I’m double impressed you do all that washing up in the freezing cold - defo my least fave chore!
Yeah, the washing up is definitely my least favourite activity 🤣
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. All the best 🙏
Happy New Year! That tagine looks delicious and I bet it hit the spot on a cold night. Wouldn’t mind a bit of snow while I sizzle in the NZ summer. Thanks for the video.
Happy new year to you 🥳 thank you for watching and commenting. Hoping for some serious snow fall in the next few months 🤞. All the best 🙏
Beautiful, but I think that you need a bigger trangia!
🤣 I think you’re right. There was a lot of spillage to clean up. All the best 🤣
Now that was a cracking pitch mind ya. Where do I sign up for this new level one as the food is always top notch mind haha. Loved the camp and great footage. All the best Mark
Gateshead College mate. Night class 🤣
@@belowaveragewildcamper 😂😂😂😂😂
I am very impressed with the lengths that you go to eat a good meal the you are outdoors. If you are looking for a decent size pack that weighs a tad over 600gms and can carry a 4 season load plus all your extra bits have a look at the Zpacks 70L . I have got a 40 litre too and i have used the Atoms ( all 3) and i just couldn't get on with having a sweaty back and now i will only ever be using Zpacks. They are expensive but considering the low weight they are very comfortable and very durable and you can synch the back to perfection and best of all you dont even need an NVQ Level 1 in cooking to use them. Happy New year and ATB :)
🤣 I’m dedicated to my art.
Might have a peak at Z-Packs pack. Many thanks mate 🙏
Belatedly, Happy New Year to you both. Almost without fail, whenever I wild camp, the meal is steak, veggies and a decent bottle of red. Maybe in 2024, I'll be a bit more adventurous with the cooking! The tagine looked great, but I guess that's to be expected from a leading (NVQ-qualified) chef. 🍲😋
Happy new year Steve. There’s absolutely nowt wrong with a steak 🥩. All the very best for 2024 👍
What fuel do you use in your trangia?
Hi Andy. I use bioethanol. It tends to burn a bit cleaner and doesn’t smell like meths. All the best.
@@belowaveragewildcamper cheers pal - I be tried a few different types and never seemed to have the effect you had. Got a link?
