      It depends on the type of rocket engine. Solid fuel such as what this drone has to use if it’s going to hit near hypersonic speeds can’t be shut down, you’d detonate the rocket. Liquid fuel rocket motors could always be shut down, but are also much more volatile than jets.
      The Me163 the Germans developed as a fighter/bomber in WWII used a liquid rocket motor for its propulsion system. They were also flying bombs that exploded at the slightest damage.

    • @alphastronghold715
      @alphastronghold715 6 месяцев назад +8

      Better question: what use is a supersonic spy drone with a flight time of only 20 minutes?
      In order for that to be useful you’d have to already know what you want to see and where it is, making the point of the aircraft redundant.
      One of the big reasons the SR-71 was retired is because satellites made its job obsolete, and anything that it would be used for can be done with short range, cheap, subsonic drones or the U2.

    About the rocket engines.
    If the drone has solid fueled rocket engines like the boosters used during the launch of a space shuttle, then it can't be switched off and restarted. But if they are liquid fueled like the engine on the space shuttle, they would have the capability to stop the engines.

    I can't help but wonder if we'll soon have little flies and bee drones spying on us or saving the day in search and rescue missions, dodging debris like pint-sized heroes. Imagine if we actually used real flies instead, and having that one fly that is like the James Bonds of the insect world with their little tuxedo, zipping around unnoticed and all. Maybe they'll even have their own insect-sized secret handshake. Are they gonna call their high fives high five or are they gonna plot that one fly to be the one to name all these cool new hand shakes?
