@@yourmotherslover42069 I’m not sure how that works but it doesn’t seem like it will. There’s been a huge discussion of how A24 failed the movie with such a late release date because technically with the ratings it’s gotten, it should have been apart of awards season. So with the way it’s being talked about, it doesn’t seem likely
Chris was cut out due to length and the fact that his story and Mike’s had the same trajectory. Someone died, it was their turn to step in, and then they “were gone”.
the director said if he could he would have made movie like the godfather but u gotta remember they only had a limited screen time and a budget of 15million for this, they could only do so much
Its slightly more complicated than that. Chris left in a very similar way to Kerry, for a very similar reason to Mike, and so not only would it have felt like just repeating, but also have stretched believability (even though it was absolutely real) and might have shut people off from the emotional attachment, than remaining emotionally invested. This is, of course, not true for everybody, but potentially true for enough.
This movie made it into my top 10 favourite movies of all time. It's so insanely good and as a pro wrestler myself, it hits so close to home. Kevin's only rule being that he wanted it to be clear how much he and his brothers loved each other makes it even more emotional.
This movie is fantastic. The best part is just showing the loving brotherly relationships, which I think is what Kevin Von Erich said was the thing he most wanted people to see/know. Thanks for this reaction!
Oh man, I didn't start to tear up until the very end when he's sitting with his sons crying. I'm the youngest of 5 and can't imagine that kind of loss. Kevin seems like such a sweetheart, I'd love to just give him a hig. Learned about the Von Erichs on an episode of Dark Side of the Ring and it's stuck with me ever since. Glad he's surrounded by family now. As the parents are portrayed in this film, I did not like them an ounce. Idk how much of it is true but the dad telling him Kerry called Kevin and Kevin didn't help is CRAZY. So much love for Kevin❤❤
The film isnt about wrestling at all.its a film about mens mental health, grief and brotherhood.the wrestling is just a backdrop to to tell that story. The first rocky film is actually similar in the sense its not actually about boxing, but a story about a man trying to get out of his predicament. Very very good film.
The fact that Kerry wrestled as an amputee the sudden deaths... the suicide..... that family endured more pain then any should, and this year Kevin was in the ring with his sons and locked the iron claw on someone.
As an older sibling, the weight of responsibility is always there. But so is the love and dedication to seeing your siblings okay. Happy. This movie hit me in my heart and made me cry in a really personal way.
The fact that the real story is more tragic, as others have mentioned in regards to the entire other brother that was cut, really says it all. How many other tragic true story movies had the film entirely omit a tragedy or two because it would be "repetitive" or "seem unbelievable"? And they were totally right, too. Crazy to think about. Kevin has a superpower to persevere as he and his family have.
This was so hard to watch! I can't even imagine losing one of my two younger sisters, or inflicting the pain of losing me onto them. Being the oldest is rough, but I wouldn't trade it, and I miss my sissies so much (we all live far away from each other). This was a beautiful reaction, Michael.
Kerry did not get into the accident when he lost his leg the night, he won the title. He would actually lose the title back to Ric Flair only two weeks after winning it, because he had missed some shows that he was supposed to appear at. Most likely due to drug and alcohol use and the NWA was not comfortable with him keeping the belt as they felt he wasn't dependable. They gave him the belt as a favor to Fritz due to David's death.
His story was more like Michael's, though. He wanted to be a wrestler so bad, but due to his having brittle bone syndrome and severe asthma, that was impossible. I actually think if they had juxtaposed Mike and Chris as two guys who wanted the opposite things but had their dreams taken away from them. And then ultimately ending up at the same destination.
I just watched this at the cinema in the uk today. I’d heard it was full of tragedy, so was waiting for all the awful things to start happening. And when you hear there was a 6th brother who also took his own life it’s even more distressing. Watching it I truly loathed their father. A24 should’ve held this so it could’ve qualified for next awards season. It deserved some nominations.
I am one of 4 brothers and this movie really hits hard. And when he is sitting there at the end, weeping, because he is no longer a brother, that destroyed me!
I grew up in nearby Carrolton TX in the late 70's, early 80's and remember hearing all about them. Regretfully I forgot about that era until recently, but this was a blast to the past for sure.
Oh wow. That's so cool that you grew up nearby. This film really portrays Texas culture really well. Me being in the UK, I'm not too familiar with Texas life. Like giving a gun as a gift like Kerry did his dad was interesting to see.
About the Ropes in a wrestling ring : they aren't bouncy. They're made from steel cable. "Running the ropes" actually hurts a bit since the trick is to put your weight on them as you run. Thus making it look like you bounce. There are 2 ways to bleed : easy and hard way. Hard way is when i punch you for real in the brow ( since it bleeds a lot and is easy to cut open with a punch ) easy way is when you use a scalpel or a razor blade to slightly cut your forehead open. The mix of a little blood and sweat creates the illusion of bleeding more than you actually are. Also the ring itself isn't really soft, theres a thin layer of padding but right underneath that is sheets of woods and the metal frame of the ring, so not a lot of protection when you fall on that.
I forgot the wrestler who said it and what video I watched specifically but he succinctly said everything hurts (referring to the ring) but their wrestlers and aren't known for wise decisions. I'm paraphrasing but that's basically what he said.
@@slavetothesystem1100I remember the video I (mist)quoted from. It's from a Tom Scott video when he tried wrestling ("I got bodyslammed by professional wrestlers"). At around 7:43, the wrestler training him said "That's because you have this amazing thing called "common sense". Wrestlers somehow seem to lose that just before they take up wrestling"
Something even sadder is that there was another brother that wasn’t included in the movie. He was the youngest and committed suicide between Michael and Kerry’s deaths. Shot himself as well. Would have just been too too much depression for the movie
I’m sure somebody has commented on it but yes, Kevin Vanrick is still alive. He is the last of the original generation of and his sons are currently wrestling, but Kevin is the last he’s he’s now the elder of the family and thank God and that nothing has happened until now, that poor family has been through so much
The way the first half is all about the brothers having fun together just for the second half to be a bunch of gut punches😭😭great performances by everyone. The (i imagine) scene where Kevin imagined his brothers reuniting got me
Of course Ric Flair wasn’t happy with that portrayal. Ric Flair is so unique and one of a kind that it’s almost impossible to cast him right, but whoever you cast needs to be charismatic as hell. The guy they got made Flair come off as typical big mouth bad guy instead of showcasing the unicorn that Flair really was
Nominations or no.. this is one of the greatest movies. I sobbed in the theatre being in the throws of my own grief but seeing this was a cathartic experience and I cannot say anymore how amazed I am at what they were able to accomplish with this film. "I used to be a brother, and now I'm not a brother anymore."
Truly recommend you searching for the Vice documentary of the Von Erich’s. The whole story is so much sadder than what was able to be portrayed for the movie.
I'm a wrestler. The scripted thing only goes as far as telling the wrestlers who will win the match. Everything that goes on in the ring, it's all choreographed and talked over by the wrestlers. They normally talk about it before the match, but there are moments where they call a match on the fly.
A couple of other tragic events they neglected to mention in this movie: David was married to his second wife at the time of his death. His first marriage ended after their 13-week-old daughter died of SIDS. Kerry had two daughters at the time of his death. He and his wife had separated prior but were trying a reconciliation when Kerry got arrested again for forging prescriptions for pain medication. Knowing that he was facing significant jail time Kerry spoke to his wife and asked if she would wait for him to get out and they could start over. She said that she wouldn't.
I’ve never been a big Zac Effron fan but he and the rest of the cast did an amazing job telling the Von Erich story, best movie I’ve seen in a a while, good reaction dude!
The movie contracts a lot of the timeline and also leaves out the sixth Adkisson/Von Erich brother Chris, who also died by suicide. Kevin thankfully is in a much, much better place today. He and his family moved to Hawaii, then recently settled in Boerne, Texas, near San Antonio. His sons Ross & Marshall are now wrestlers and actually appeared this week on AEW Rampage, teaming with Dusty Rhodes’ son Dustin. Kevin still makes appearances when promotions come to Texas. Kerry’s daughter Lacey wrestled for a time, and now promotes independent wrestling shows in Texas.
"Yes this is entertainment but the hazards are real" As someone who watched a lot of pro wrestling and still does. I've heard that a lot, taking bumps hurts a lot more than you think
I personally believe, after learning the story myself a year or two ago, that anyone who wants to be a wrestler needs to know the story of the Von Erich family. Mental health is a huge issue in this community and I feel like it's only been highlighted in the last decade. If anything, I think their story shows the importance of having a supportive family, whether biological or found. It's just really fuckin sad.
There were actually 6 brothers, the youngest brother Chris was also a wrestler but he didn't have nearly as much success as his older brothers in the ring because he was the smallest and was weaker than his brothers. Chris also killed himself, he died before Kerry did, but sadly the director completely removed him Chris from the movie because his situation was too similar to Mike's. Both Mike and Chris were forced into wrestling to replace a dead brother and then both died by suicide. I think they should have included Chris in the movie, the director's reasoning for omitting Chris from the movie was stupid. Chris always felt inferior to his brothers and even in death he is still overlooked, it was cruel of the director to treat Chris like he didn't exist.
47:43 That wasn't how it happened, Kerry did visit his father's ranch but he drove out deep into the woods in his jeep, to where him and his brothers would play when they were kids. He parked the jeep, went into a clearing in the woods, took the gun he gave his dad for father's day not Christmas, and shot himself in the heart; that's when Fritz discovered him afterwards. Fritz said that Kerry had the most peaceful look on his face.. 😭💔
It's been out in the States since 22nd December and id now available to watch on demand there. Feels like going back to the 90's having to wait so long.
Wrestling is "scripted". The outcomes are scripted, the storylines are scripted, the interviews are scripted in the sense that a Wrestler will have bullet points of what they want to say but they usually put their personality into it not memorize the whole thing. The gravity is real, the chair shots are real, the injuries are real, the entertainment is real. They are live stunt performers who really do put their bodies on the line. The "booker" picks the champion and the winner but that's usually given to the best performer and how much they connect with the crowd. You have to be good and dedicated to become champion. Also, the ring itself hurts, its wood and a carpet on it.
I lost my older brother to cancer when he was 29 I was 25, that was 16 yrs ago, I cant imagine losing 5 brothers, this was so heartbreaking, their poor mother, just such an incredible movie, wish they put Chris in the story he was just as important. The documentary on them is really good i never been a wrestling fan but this era was different and it was always on at my grandpa's house growing up.
I'm surprised that Kevin only had a few issues with the film. I feel like usually with a lot of these films, the people it's based on seem to have a lot of issues with it. But I'm glad that this one seems to be an exception overall.
I've been saying that casting Timothy Chalamet as Wonka in the new movie over Jeremy Allen White was a big mistake!! He looks just like Wilder, so happy you agree.
Fritz and his partner Ken Mantell were the ones that sold their majority stake in the promotion to Jerry Jarrett. Kerry and Kevin owned about 40% at the time. After his father's death Kevin did take control of the promotion's extensive video library of their shows. He would sell it to the WWE who put it on their WWE Network a streaming service that is currently on NBC streaming service Peacock. The WWE would also induct the entire Von Erich family into its Hall of Fame.
I remember hearing about a film being made during the territory days of wrestling and the moment I found out that it's about the Von Erich family, my reaction was pretty much just this: "Oh... oh boy..."
There was actually a fifth brother who committed suicide his name is Chris He was much smaller than the other boys In real life, Kevin and Carrie were both 6 foot two and they were the small ones Was only 56 and still tried to wrestle But at the end of the day he has and all of their people, and they live happily in Hawaii God bless him
Running the ropes is a lot of fun, but learning to do it takes the skin off your back the first four weeks or so of training. Once you callous up to it, tho, it's the funnest thing in the ring... till ya gas yourself out.
As a fellow wrestler, I'm really glad people are watching, and enjoying this movie. The real story is even more tragic than this movie, and this movie is phenomenal. Great video. Also, one of the brothers was left out of the movie. His story also ended in tragedy.
I live in North Dallas, Denton, Texas where this family lived. Such an incredibly sad story, and it's actually worse than the movie portrayed. There was a whole other younger brother who ended up taking his own life as well, but the director felt like it was too much for the movie. On top of that, their dad died shortly after all the other brothers from brain cancer, I believe. Also, Kevin talks about how he didn't like how his dad was portrayed in the film.
@Omn1Media bro I love your reactions to these movies! I found your channel when you uploaded the rocky series, this is a great reaction great work man just wanted to show love from Philly man!
47:43 I think they combined the deaths of Kerry & Chris Von Erich into this one scene because it was Chris that died in Kevin's arms, not Kerry; Chris shot himself in the head.. 😭💔
Fun Fact: The movie's portrayal of Kerry's death is a combo of his & youngest brother, Chris Von Erich's, death. Kevin discovered Chris after speaking with him on the phone. Fritz never held Kerry like Kevin asked because they spoke on the phone while he was pouring a driveway & never heard what Kevin said.
When I saw this in the theater, I had the same reaction you did to them landing on the concrete outside the ring. The way I have heard it put best is by Al Snow: "The difference between a fight and a pro wrestling match is intent." Basically, the violence is the same, but there is an agreement and trust between the wrestlers not to intentionally injure each other. Pro wrestling is a fantastic medium for long-term storytelling, everyone should give it a shot.
When I saw this movie at the end i was hit with oh my gosh this must be how my Dad feels/has felt his whole life. He is the oldest of four brother and the youngest was murdered before I was born but I know he still holds onto that and feels that he wasn't able to protect them. When I was doing a deep dive into the family after I kept seeing that their real last name was Adkisson and the dad used a stage name that they all took on. My Maiden name is Adkisson.. how ironic. I really really enjoyed this movie and immediately wanted to watch it again after seeing it. They did the story so much justice
Really a great film from Sean Durkin. What a shame this film got no love from the academy. I also enjoyed your genuine reaction. Men are told to be strong from the beginning of time. Mental health awareness is extremely present in this film. Something that needs to be addressed more than ever.
As a fan of the Von Erich's back in the day. I should speak for myself, we/I never knew what was going on behind the curtains. Just what we saw on tv. I became of fan not long after David passed away. Kerry was my favorite. And after seeing the death of Mike and Kerry (who I had the pleasure of meeting 2 years before) his death. Still to this day, my heart aches for Kevin. I never really knew just how much of a load was put on him. The part where he says, 'I used to be a brother and now I don't have any brothers' was said in an interview! I wish I could tell Kevin, that he'll ALWAYS be a 'Brother' and will ALWAYS 'have brothers!!' Kevin's first 2 children were daughters and then sons! His sons are famous in their own way in the wrestling business! Fun Fact - Kevin once said that 'though wrestling may be scripted, once you enter the ring with us. You're gonna get a good whoopin'!! Because we don't play around!!'
He actually lost 5 brothers....they did not mention their youngest brother who also took his own life.....great reaction by the way. Just found your channel

If you’ve experienced a tragic loss like that before then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
I’m so mad the movie got zero nominations for any big awards this was amazing and powerful and emotional
Yeah it got screwed over by A24 cause I don’t think it had a festival run so voters only saw it when many of them had already cast their votes.
@@hambacon559I heard that it got disqualified from award season because A24 missed the distribution cut off by 2 days! 😞
@katelynhadley7884 could that mean it can qualify for next years?
@@yourmotherslover42069 I’m not sure how that works but it doesn’t seem like it will. There’s been a huge discussion of how A24 failed the movie with such a late release date because technically with the ratings it’s gotten, it should have been apart of awards season. So with the way it’s being talked about, it doesn’t seem likely
It wasn't diverse enough. There's actual things that need to be checked boxed. If not then it won't be considered. BS but woke Hollywood
Just remember, the true story was somehow TOO SAD so they had to cut an entire brother.
The final line in this movie breaks me every time it see it.
Yeah, justice for Chris man. I loved this film but I’m not the biggest fan of the reasoning to leave him out.
Chris was cut out due to length and the fact that his story and Mike’s had the same trajectory. Someone died, it was their turn to step in, and then they “were gone”.
the director said if he could he would have made movie like the godfather but u gotta remember they only had a limited screen time and a budget of 15million for this, they could only do so much
@@heathergeerJustice for Lance, the fake cousin who came in did nothing and left
Kerry Von Erich was called The Texas Tornado when he was with WWF from 1990 to 1992.
Yeah, the announcers did refer to him as Kerry Von Erich at times during matches.
This movie made it into my top 10 favourite movies of all time. It's so insanely good and as a pro wrestler myself, it hits so close to home. Kevin's only rule being that he wanted it to be clear how much he and his brothers loved each other makes it even more emotional.
Yes. Definitely in one of my top 10 films. Was.very moving.
Kevin Von Erich did The Iron Claw on Ric Flair in real life for like 3 minutes longer after the bell rang it’s insane footage it’s on RUclips
The last 5-10 minutes of this movie killed me when I went to see it in theaters. Tears just started flowing out.
I wish this movie would have gotten more recognition. It was so slept on!! Stellar performances all around
There was 6 Von Erich brothers. Chris Von Erich was not portrayed in the movie due to time constraints. And had a similar death to Kerry.
For real? So there was another brother. Oh no! I wish Michael never entered the ring.
@@oIRONITEo I have also thought that would be the perfect framing for Mike & Chris. I wish they had included all of the brothers.
The photo of Kevins family at the end broke me
I just watched this at the cinema in the uk today.
I hear you. Just watched this yesterday.
I heard when Kevin saw the film the scene where he meets all of his brothers it really was emotional for him
Well duh…he didn’t find Kerry but he found Chris
@@RandalReid Sensei Seth and ConnordawgVA both tried it for a day
@@slavetothesystem1100I remember the video I (mist)quoted from. It's from a Tom Scott video when he tried wrestling ("I got bodyslammed by professional wrestlers"). At around 7:43, the wrestler training him said "That's because you have this amazing thing called "common sense". Wrestlers somehow seem to lose that just before they take up wrestling"
@@slavetothesystem1100 I did watch both of those videos from Sensei Seth and CDawg as I am both subscribed to their channels.
He is the last of the original generation of and his sons are currently wrestling, but Kevin is the last he’s he’s now the elder of the family and thank God and that nothing has happened until now, that poor family has been through so much
And Kerry’s daughter Lacey wrestled for a while and now promotes her own shows in Texas.
Wow when u don't cry watching the movie
But u start crying watching this reaction wow
Thanx Omn1, everyone cries
The way the first half is all about the brothers having fun together just for the second half to be a bunch of gut punches😭😭great performances by everyone. The (i imagine) scene where Kevin imagined his brothers reuniting got me
Of course Ric Flair wasn’t happy with that portrayal. Ric Flair is so unique and one of a kind that it’s almost impossible to cast him right, but whoever you cast needs to be charismatic as hell. The guy they got made Flair come off as typical big mouth bad guy instead of showcasing the unicorn that Flair really was
You absolutely need to watch The Bear. It's EXCELLENT. That would be a great one to react to.
That was about the most wholesome end to a movie I have ever seen
Such a beautiful interaction with his boys
Highly recommend the Episode of Dark Side of the Ring to see the full details and interviews.
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE MOVIE!! THIS SHOULD HAVE WON ALL THE AWARDS!
Fun Fact: Kevins sons are NATURALS in the ring! Check them out when they came on AEW!
Absolutely adored this movie. I had no idea about the real story. Everyone in this is amazing. Great reaction man.
A couple of other tragic events they neglected to mention in this movie:
David was married to his second wife at the time of his death.
She definitely regrets that to this day no doubt
"Yes this is entertainment but the hazards are real"
As someone who watched a lot of pro wrestling and still does. I've heard that a lot, taking bumps hurts a lot more than you think
This is one of the few movies that really got to me. After I watched this movie, I cried like a baby and hugged my brother.
As the oldest sibling, this movie hit me hard. First movie in awhile that's made me shed a tear, best wrestling movie I've seen.
Kevin Von Erich is truly a punished soul. My god.
As an old-school wrestling fan, this one is tough to watch. I cried during a documentary on Von Erichs. Emotional wreck crying.
23:24 - "well, everything else seems to be working out just fine" Me: ::Homer Simpson's into bush::
Weird seeing this getting a RUclips reaction so soon... it only came out in cinemas in the UK last week!
I didn't except to cry this much during this movie but 😩😮💨 it got me
That's MJF with blond hair at 34:26
MJF played Lance Von Erich had that role cut to just a short cameo as most his scenes didn’t make the final cut.
When I was a kid the von erichs vs the free birds was the biggest thing in wrestling. I absolutely loved it.
That question about wrestling being fake when a lot better with her than it did when John Stossel asked Dr. D David Schultz😆
Hear me out now.... imagine Zac Efron as Wolverine. He's got the build and acting chops for it.
How did this not get nominated
The only curse that existed was the toxic masculinity the dad caused for his dream catchers. The dad was too weak to get the belt himself.
Sadly, they had another brother, Chris Von Erich, who committed suicide too. For some reason, they didn't include him in the film.
As someone who’s been affected directly by suicide. That moment towards the end caught me so off guard, i was kinda jacked up the rest of the night
Except Fritz found him not Kevin it is still sad AF
That shot of Mikey trying to play the guitar reminded me of the ending to the last of us 2, that hurt seeing him lose his passion
I remember hearing about a film being made during the territory days of wrestling and the moment I found out that it's about the Von Erich family, my reaction was pretty much just this: "Oh... oh boy..."
There was actually a fifth brother who committed suicide his name is Chris
He was much smaller than the other boys
In real life, Kevin and Carrie were both 6 foot two and they were the small ones
Was only 56 and still tried to wrestle
But at the end of the day he has and all of their people, and they live happily in Hawaii
God bless him
Running the ropes is a lot of fun, but learning to do it takes the skin off your back the first four weeks or so of training.
This Movie is SOO Powerful, It made me Tear up soo many rimes
When I saw this movie at the end i was hit with oh my gosh this must be how my Dad feels/has felt his whole life. He is the oldest of four brother and the youngest was murdered before I was born but I know he still holds onto that and feels that he wasn't able to protect them. When I was doing a deep dive into the family after I kept seeing that their real last name was Adkisson and the dad used a stage name that they all took on. My Maiden name is Adkisson.. how ironic. I really really enjoyed this movie and immediately wanted to watch it again after seeing it. They did the story so much justice
The version of the “World Title” that Kevin wasn’t really a real world title, it was WCWA trying to pass the Texas title as the world championship.
I wish I could tell Kevin, that he'll ALWAYS be a 'Brother' and will ALWAYS 'have brothers!!'
Kevin's first 2 children were daughters and then sons! His sons are famous in their own way in the wrestling business!
Fun Fact - Kevin once said that 'though wrestling may be scripted, once you enter the ring with us. You're gonna get a good whoopin'!! Because we don't play around!!'
You should really check out the dark side of the ring episode on the family it really adds more detail to the timeline of events
He actually lost 5 brothers....they did not mention their youngest brother who also took his own life.....great reaction by the way. Just found your channel
Fantastic, heartfelt reaction. Great job 😊 Greetings from London, England 🇬🇧
In the part where Kevin is up in the box and there two guys in the ring those are Kevin’s real life sons.
Kerry only held the title and NWA for like three weeks before they gave it back to flair
When the father says the name, Hellwig
That’s the ultimate warrior
Yes the booking is set up in the show, how the match goes is up to the people working it
The reality of the von Eric family would make Shakespeare shake his head in sadness
But at least Kevin has been happily married for all these years with a massive family
He got what he wanted
Man this movie hit me way harder than expected. I held it in until the Kerry boat scene... After that the water works were opened
21:55 I don't think you understand how painful hitting the ropes is. Sometimes it's more painful than getting slammed on the ground...
The Bear is a stunning series.
Jeremy Allen White won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance !
He is also in Shameless US, if you haven't seen it already.
A good one for your channel.
Right up your street.
There is actually one more brother removed from the film as the crew thought it was to much trauma to be in the film.
So excited for this one!
