My Russian tortoise Toby gives two enthusiastic claws up for this video! He lives outside in the summer and is loving it but comes in when temps drop and enjoys life indoors in his 4 x 2 enclosure. Such a sweet little guy and so easy to care for once you nail temps/uvb and basking space. Definitely recommend them to turtle lovers 🐢❤️

There are two types of Herman tortoises. Western herman do only get up to about 6 inch but Eastern Herman tortoises, which is actually the more common type, get to around 10inchs and need alot more room

Definitely do more tortoise content! If I lived in an area I could keep a sulcata year round outside I would. They have such great personalities! And who wouldn’t want a giant tortoise?! Living where I do (northeast PA) I plan on getting a red foot that will love our humid and hot summers outside but will have a home inside for the cold season. I think their size is the happy medium between the large sulcatas and the tiny Russians ☺️

You basically described my dream; a sulcata (preferably fully grown so it can hopefully be taken care of all it's life ;-) among some other awesome reptiles in the backyard somewhere warm all year round. My dad actually kept a Greek tortoise over 70 years ago in his garden. As they say, like father like son...

Very important thing for Hermanns and Russians is hibernation and in the wild the Russians have also a time in midsummer when they burrow themselve

You really should have talked about the black breasted leaf turtles, they're awesome, like a tiny snapping turtle that doesn't even need a big water area.

The Burmese mountain tortoise seems to me the ideal species for me. They do get large but not bulldozer size like the sulcata.

This is a great guide in deciding the right tortoise! Great video as always! I would LOVE to see more tortoise videos. 🐢🤍
We have a Sulcata tortoise in my household, they are HUGE. She’s only a juvenile so she’s about the size of a full grown redfoot. Fruits shouldn’t be included in their diet often but can be used as treats on rare occasions. They eat romaine lettuce, hibiscus flowers, but mostly grass in their diet, and don’t forget the calcium supplement. Tortoises need calcium supplements in order for healthy shell growth. Try to avoid pyramiding in their shells which is when their shells become a very unhealthy shape and their development can be poor. If you do not live in an area where it is warm in the spring-fall, i absolutely would not recommend a sulcata. If you live in an environment where it doesn’t reach at least around 80-85°F during the summer, don’t get one. These tortoises come from the hot climates of Africa. Also, they require soaks often when the weather is nice and sunny. :) They will also dig A LOTTT so make sure your sulcata cannot escape. They will also poop a lot, and their poop is MASSIVE..bigger than my dog’s poop. (Not to make them seem like they’re not great to have around or anything…just please know what you’re getting yourself into! Trisha is right when she says they start out as cute lil babies. They get from cute lil nuggets to massive boulders lol).
Sulcatas have a special place in my heart, they are overall amazing pets to have around. Watching them ineract with their environment is awesome to watch, and they fascinate me more and more every day. They have funny, stubborn personalities. Some sulcatas can be sweethearts while mine will just hiss lol, (she’s very sassy). They are great tortoises if you are willing to offer them a huge backyard and an enclosure for them to sleep in. You really need to put in a lot of dedication for tortoises, definitely some of the most HIGH maintenance reptilian pets out there.
