That turtle us dead by now. It was sick in the first place and even after all that it couldn't swim. It should have been taken to a rescue center put in fresh water to safely remove the nonsense and then said for rehab. Even if it could swim there's a reason it got like that but this one is dead unless someone who knew better found it after this. It's also painful removing thise hitchhikers by just ripping or scraping.

Turtles get an infection of some type that makes them hold air so they can’t submerge. That’s one reason why it had so many barnacles on it. I think this turtle is sick because it stayed on the surface when released. Most will dive as soon as you put them back in the water. If anyone rescues a turtle and it doesn’t submerge, take it to a sea life refuge or call them to pick it up. Otherwise, they will eventually die if not treated by starving.

As a PSA to fellow turtle lovers, you should NOT scrape barnacles off a turtle. Turtles are very resilient but they are also sensitive. A turtle’s shell has nerves so they can feel everything that touches it. In this case the turtle was probably weakened or hurt first which led to it being covered in unwanted guests. Removing things like sea grass or a crab, something not attached to the turtle, won’t hurt the turtle but if there are barnacles on the turtle that AREN’T in large amounts, you should not remove them. Barnacles and turtles usually have a “commensalism” symbiotic relationship. Barnacles benefit by hitching a free ride and eating food in the water while the turtle is moving, and the turtle is neither harmed nor helped by the barnacles presence. This relationship may turn parasitic if there is excessive amounts of barnacles, but usually the turtle is not effected by the barnacles existence. What DOES harm the turtle is needlessly removing barnacles when they aren’t in a bad state. In the case that there are excessive barnacles living on the turtle, It would probably be better to take it to a professional who can remove barnacles safely and comfortably for the turtle. I’m not a professional, this is just what I know as someone who (really likes) turtles and knows people who care for them, so correct me if anything I said is wrong. Thank you for reading if you did?? ☺️

While everyone is on here applauding this guy for "saving" this turtle... the reality is, he actually just set him up for his demise.
When you see a turtle covered in barnacles, their life is already at risk. They latch on to turtles when they are unwell.

Nop. This dude used glue on the turtle to stick stuff on it to sell the video. I remember this. Turtle expert identified this turtle to be a turtle that lives in rivers and lakes. Putting a non-salty turtle in the sea is the same as harming it due to salty water. It takes DECADES for a turtle get so much stuff to stick to it. Given that it couldnt swim at all, it would have long died cause it cannot hunt. So this dude is not Rescuing the Turtle. He is using a poor turtle to make a fake rescue video.

They can feel things in their shells like we can through our fingernails or toenails. It doesn't hurt to have something taken off the top of them. Usually we just get a sense of pressure. They wouldn't feel pain unless you punctured the shells outer layers, so you'd have to be really stupid to go ice picking a turtle like that. What this man did probably didn't cause any pain, even if the turtle was a little uncomfortable with the process. Bet he's more comfortable not being drowned by the weight of those barnacles and the freeloading crab.
