For the fuel line, a spring style clamp should be used so that as the rubber hose expands and contracts with temperature change, it doesn't become too loose. Otherwise, great job at explaining this process.
Good how to. Best one I’ve seen. Especially because you stated the size of the socket to remove the bolts from the carb. I figured it out blind but it was nice to see. You also explained very well the choke and governor cannot both be closed at the same time. Something I was struggling with when removing the old carb (while the spacer between the carb and the intake manifold was still stuck in place.
Nice to see you torquing the bolts! Others just hand tightened and risk snapping them!! Next giveaway?? Onan QG4000 carburetor maybe?? I’m Also going to add a fuel line shutoff close to the carb to empty the carb when finished running to prevent any further gummy problems.
Heck yeah, mechanical engineer here, I understand the importance of properly torquing bolts. And an inline fuel shutoff valve is a super easy DIY that will help protect the carb from exactly what you said which is why these carbs commonly need replaced 👍
My generator started and runs like a champion. Put more emphasis on not losing the washers on the mounting bolts. Installed a manual shutoff valve to run the bowl out of gas when i test run it, monthly. My hugh thanks for your help. Frank
I (well ,the repair shop) replaced my carburetor since it would not run for more than 30 minutes. After the new carburetor, the generator would run for 3 to 4 hours and then shut off. Took it back to the shop and they found that the fuel pump was full of solids. After the fuel pump was replaced, the generator has not had any issues. @@FateUnbound
Thank you for this excellent, easy to understand video. I have a suggestion to make to prevent the wing nut that holds the air filter cover from unscrewing and moving and damaging expensive parts that are complicated to replace. Simply add a 1/4 self-locking nut after the wing nut.
Thanks for this Video. I figured out that the Carb was bad and this Video helped me. Most of it was pretty obvious, but your little tips and suggestions really helped me. RV Generator will now start and run without Starter Fluid !! THANKS.
We fought generator issues (QG5500) all summer on a 7mo trip out west, New fuel pump, Plugs, Oil level changes, Insulating fuel lines, Removed and cleaned carb, Ordered new carb,. Before installing the new carb I added a second fuel pump near the gas tank. The second pump fixed all my issues and the generator now runs better than it ever has. Prior to installing the second pump it would rev up and down, especially under load and may run 1-2 minutes or may run 30-40 min, or may not start at all, and never without priming first. After adding second pump it runs smooth even with AC starting and stopping. I can now run both AC's and the Microwave and the generator never stumbles. If this doesn't fix your issues and a second pump near the gas tank.
Thanks for this! Just ordered my new carburetor. I was going to mess around trying to clean but might as well just replace it. The actual Cummins brand was Onan carb on eBay isn’t too bad.
Great video. I wasted time and money with seafoam and cleaning main jet. Definitely worth it to just replace carb for 40 bucks on Amazon. I also cut a shut off valve in the fuel line so I can starve the generator.
Looks like the new dog will be another family member. As for Sweetie, they should teach her Karaoke. She could sing "Werewolves Of London" by Warren Zevon. 😊
At certain times of the year that I know my generator won't run through a tank of gas for a month we put fuel stabilizer in the tank. Gasoline will foul up everything quickly. Just running the genset once a week wont do anything to prevent fuel in the tank from going bad.
I did this project today. It was way harder than I anticipated. I broke the starter solenoid trying to disconnect power😑. I should have just disconnected the batteries. When the new solenoid comes tomorrow, and I get it installed, I’ll give it a whirl. Wish me luck. 😊
a few years ago i was travelling often and was away more than home. I took out a drop box at the UPS store. They would ship my mail and packages wherever i was. Theres a cost , but it depends on how much you need this. If i knew what hotel i was going to id have the stuff shipped there so it was there when i arrived. It all worked pretty well.
What would cause the choke tab to move rapidly back and forth? I changed out the carb but it wasn't running right and fuel was running out of the air box.
@@TJ-bl6lr I bought a clone carb. It's working fine now. The choke was out of adjustment and still is off a little. But it starts easy and once it's warmed up it runs great.
Is the carburetor off to give you some room to work? I'd just lightly tap the side if it with a screwdriver and hammer. Shock loading it from the side should break it loose. Just don't pry against the intake manifold because it's cast aluminum and you can mar the gasket mating surface. If you damage the isolator a new one can be ordered from Cummins for cheap so it's not the end of the world it it's damaged, but it's made of hard plastic so I wouldn't be too scared. If you can get your hand on it grabbing and twisting it may break it loose too
@@FateUnboundyes the carb is off. It’s attached to the carb. Almost like they put a gasket sealant on it…. I tried to pry and it cracked a little piece of the plastic off. I feel like using a heat gun would melt the plastic. I have a new isolator on order but I’m supposed to go camping Friday and it likely won’t be here in time. I guess I’ll just throw a fuel cutoff valve on the fuel like and just leave the genny disconnected for this trip.
There should be a sticker towards the bottom of your generator when you take the panel off that reveals the engine. It'll show what your generator part number is, like 4KYFA26100R, or something like that. The carbeurators on Amazon should specify which generator they're for and find one with the same number as yours.
The cheap chinese ones come with a wrong carb air filter gasket that has extra holes in it and block part of an internal passageway. Order gasket set from onan.
Honestly the only other option is to order direct from Cummins. It'll be around $250 but if you've got the money that's the safest route. The Amazon carbs I've heard are hit or miss so if you wanna be sure you get a good part then order from Cummins.

Good job, I like the way you explained everything. Glad you came back! Now, I need to look at my generator manual!

Great to have you back! Keep those videos coming.
I used your video and switched my carburetor! Thanks brother!
Awesome! Happy to help 😁
You just saved me $300 visit to the shop. Thanks so much !

Really satisfying to watch, great video.
Thank you thank you. If the engine still wants to shutdown, check the Hertz with a Kill o Watt meter. Simple throttle adjustment to achieve the 60Hz
Thanks for the tip! I've dialed in the governor and the Hz reading is right in line with what the manual suggest at various loads.

Nice work, David! Good thing you could fit your hands in there to work in that tight space.
You're awesome! My generator has been having the same problem, I've also been meaning to replace the carb. This is a super helpful video!

I loved the detail and up close shots for this replacement. You rock. Nicely Done!

Thank you!
Great video.
Any idea where to source the three gaskets? I need a new set.
Cummins onan website. They come stamped on a sheet around $13 and includes valve gaskets.
When you are traveling how do you have packages delivered? I assume Amazon locker, but what if you had to order from Lippert, etc?

Nice Video, thanks. Why didn't you install a gas shut off valve? A cheap $10 fix that maybe would have avoided this repair?
Nice job Thanks
how much was the carb? I just looked for my carb #A062T421 its almost $600
What would cause the choke tab to move rapidly back and forth? I changed out the carb but it wasn't running right and fuel was running out of the air box.
Did you buy $30 amazon carb or onan genuine part?

How long did your $30 part last? I heard its hit or miss with the cheap chinese junk and they end up leaking fuel.
Very helpful..turns out my plastic float was filled with gas..
Yep, hole in the float does happen unfortunately. Glad the video was helpful
I'm surprised these things still have carberators and not EFI, like our cars and trucks.
It's all about cost. Carburetors are much cheaper to manufacture than a fuel injected small engine.
Sounds good!
Well done, thanks.
after changing the carb, i hope my starts as easily.
what model # is your generator ???
I have an Onan 4000 Generator in my toy hauler, how do I figure out which carburetor I need to buy…

Are you sure that disgusting air filter was not choking the carb and causing a rich mixture?
So you’re her maintenance man, what do you get out of this relationship now?
