    Thanks for the pointers. I got a good tip from a Cummins tech. He said to install a shut off gas valve in line just before it goes into the carb. When you're ready to store for a while, turn off the gas valve, start the gen, and let it run out to empty the bowl. He said you will never have to replace the carb if you do this.

      I put one between the fuel tank and the generator this way the fuel pump and filter also don't sit with gas in them.

    Just open the float bowl drain and put cleaner directly in there. It's super simple. Connect a hose to that nipple under the float bowl. Turn that little screw counter clockwise to open the valve. Push cleaner into the tube. No disassembly needed.

    One way to avoid carb gunning up is to add sea foam or a good stable product to the last fill up when parking the rig for an extended period. Then just run gen at appx half load for appx 30 minutes once or twice a month. Has worked on my onan 4k for 6 years now. Be sure to run gen.

    I had been racking my head on how to get that gunk out of my carburetor and this did the trick!! Thanks for posting.I went a step farther and added a fuel shutoff valve so to eliminate the fuel sitting in the carburetor. I also added stabile to the fuel tank and added only non-ethanol fuel to the tank!

      There are some disagreements on this issue. Some mechanics say to not leave the carb dry on the Onan for too long; others say it is okay, but it is better to just put Stabil the fuel for storage. I use mine quite frequently year-round so, it is not an issue for me. I had just bought the RV when I made this video and it had been sitting for three years, so that is why I needed to clean it up.

    The phillips headed screw at the base of the carb bowl opens the drain. Just open it and drain the carb anytime the machine is sitting unused for any long time.......You can also pull off the fuel line and use a hose and bottle to gravity feed something like Seafoam or WD-40 into the carb but is not a must. I had 2 4KY's and just drained them every winter......they ran fine in spring once brought back to life....

    Good video. My 4000 Onan just stopped running like it wasn't getting any fuel. Turned out my fuel tank on the motor home was less than a quarter full. I filled the tank and the generator started right up. Apparently my unit has a shut off devise to the generator to prevent you from exhausting the RV fuel tank by running the generator too long.

    I did good but apparently I have a 100 hrs on it so it shuts off until it is serviced and they reset it with their secret code. One of those money sucking features. Your instructions were perfect. The red light was flashing 3x which means service. What threw me was the fuel hose was on with one of those fancy brackets. One of those one and done. I almost went and bought their fancy tool to put on another but finally said heck with it give me the regular brackets. Oetiker clamp! A lot of work getting it off.

    • @daledjfire268
      @daledjfire268 4 года назад

      There is no such thing as a secret code all you do is push the stop once and it will flash the code on why the gen shut down. Its basically just a check engine light. You can download a free service manual online for these and it will tell you what the flash codes mean. And when you push the stop once after a 3 flash service code then you can restart it. Like a 14 which is one flash pause then 4 quick flashes is over frequency which means it revved up to much and its protecting itself.

    • @bryanyoung2314
      @bryanyoung2314 3 года назад +2

      3 is the first number of the error code, then it does a second number. Example: flash, flash, flash, pause, flash X 6 times = Code 36 then refer to owners manual.

    We have a one year old Onan 2800 on our 1 year old Winnebago Travato. Our generator at 11 hours of use began surging and dying. All previous use was just exercising the unit. I did attempt to do a cleaning with Seafoam in the gasoline and a few sprays or carburetor cleaner into the intake. Actually it would idle when spraying then surge and die. That did not work so we took it to the Onan sevice center. I was reluctant to take the time to do that as we have been told that Onan usually denies the warranty coverage. So they did a check and the called and said it was the carburetor would be warrenty covered. What a relief I did a happy dance! Then an hour later they called back and said “sorry we found residue in the bowl and that Onan would not warranty the repair”. The price for removing the unit and replacing the carburetor was said to be $961. I asked for a better price and they did agree to $650. So looks like what I have been reading all over the internet is true, if you put gas in your generator and follow the suggestions for keeping it exercised there still will be no warranty coverage for your $3,500 generator.

    • @thejungleexplorer
      @thejungleexplorer  3 года назад +1

      So sorry to hear this. I would contact Onan directly and talk to them about this. This does not seem right. If they refuse to do anything for you, remind them that there are plenty of review sites where you would rather not inform people about how bad their warranty and customer service is and that nobody needs bad press right now with the economy the way it is. Sometimes it helps to remind these companies that consumers now have a very loud voice on the internet.

I just got fuel going into the carb itself,a problem with the lines. The gas tank was empty and clean which I checked it with my boroscope. But anyway when I tired starting it there was gas blowing back into the air filter. With that low of hours I wouldn't think anything more than a cleaning would be necessary, but I'm unsure as to why gas is blowing back either. I'd appreciate any input.

    THIS IS HOW I FIXED MINE, IN THE CASE OF....
    "I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR"
    It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen dipstick (it won't start if low oil because of sensors) then I checked gasoline more than 1\4 tank in the RV (also safety sensors), sparkplug checked for good spark, also checked the manual reset circuit braker ( to be ON) at front motorhome engine compartment for 12v current to the generator to be able to start it, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed like gum by rats at the back of starting switch generator panel so I replaced them, at this time the generator started but stay running only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so then finally I knew it was internal electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, (I did this by myself with some tools and old Mayan tricks ) lol, it's really heavy for one person.
    I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats, and of course I got rid off the stinky nest, lol!!!
    Then I assembled everything back together and... bingo it's runing like a champion!!!
    For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel).
    Just picture this: (Any gasoline engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed.
    Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover because you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding, lol!!!
    After testing the gen with the help of a gasoline container, a piece of hose and 12v battery, I did put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover, then it was ready to be installed at my RV.
    Once the gen was installed back at my motorhome I started it to be tested for 120v electricity but not before flipping the AC circuit switch (on) at the gen starting control panel (sometimes hiding under or around the panel) to be able to transfer power to my RV GFCI main outlet and electric panel as well, my motorhome it's equipped with GFCI so I reset it and tested for green led light indicating power is ready at my main breakers panel, so I turned my main breaker (on) along the others ones but no power was present at my breaker main switch (faulty main braker) so I flipped it many times, sometimes you can make it work again, mine did work, lol!!!
    I'm happy because everything works now including the refrigerator for cold drinks and AC for this crazy summer, lol! Later I'll buy me a new main braker, for now this is a resurrected generator story that needed to be shared.
    If this can help eaven one person to save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!

    I just bought a 2011 RV with an onan 4000 generator. When I try to prime it the light doesn't turn on. When I try to start it, there is no noise. I have studied but have not yet repaired: how to replace the filter, replace the spark plug, change the oil, and now I understand what you suggest in this video. Unfortunately I can't try what you suggest in this video until the generator can turn on. What would you suggest I try first?

    • @thejungleexplorer
      @thejungleexplorer  4 года назад +1

      Does the generator not try to start at all? If so, there may be several things that cause this. It is a process of elimination to figure out what the cause is.
      First make sure it has power. The generator starts off of the house battery, not the engine battery, so make sure the house battery is good. Second, some RV have an auxiliary generator kill switch located somewhere around the rear exit door. On my RV it is located down at the bottom of the lefthand side of the door. This switch allows you to kill the genny without having to climb up into the RV. It is easy to accidentally kick and if it is set to off, the genny will not turn on. If neither of these are the problem, then you need to check the power cables from the house battery to the genny. If they are good, then the problem is either the switch or the starter motor.
      I hope this helps.

    • @makingcloudsofthought3006

      @@thejungleexplorer The switch beside my backdoor was able to prime and then attempt to start the generator. It was unsuccessful in starting the generator but at least this switch gave the generator a try. Looks like I'll have a couple more steps here but your advice definitely did solve the first few steps in elimination towards fixing a few pieces. Thanks for the response.

    • @thejungleexplorer
      @thejungleexplorer  4 года назад +1

      @@makingcloudsofthought3006 Awesome. Glad I could help. If the genny tries to start, but won't stay running or runs rough, that definitely is a dirty carburetor problem. The genny draws gas from the main fuel tank. If this RV has been sitting for a while, the fuel may not be that good. The RV engine may be able to run on it but not the genny. I would siphon the tank empty and fill it up with premium gas with a standard mixture of SeaFaom. The RV engine fuel system may benefit from a good clean as well.

    Greetings:-) Can you help as to any knowledge/experience in conversion to propane... I understand they run cleaner and easier to start after sitting. Thanking you in advance, -keith

    • @thejungleexplorer
      @thejungleexplorer  2 года назад

      I do not recommend converting to propane in this situation for two reasons.
      1. It reduces the generation capacity by about 25%. For example: If your generator is a 4000 watt gasoline unit, converting it to propane will reduce it to a 3000 watt unit.
      2. It will increase the cost of operation. It will burn more propane to produce less power, thus increasing the cost to run it. This is not to mention that it you have a normal sized propane tank (my mini has a 10 gallon) you would have to fill you take constantly. Based on my own experience with converting gasoline generators to propane, a 5000 watt generator can run about 8 hours on 5 gal propane. So, if you have a 10 gal tank, you might get 24 hours if continuous operation out your generator before had to refill it. Of course this would mean pulling up stakes and driving to a propane refill place about once a day. This would further increase the cost of operation.
      If you still want to do it, you would need to buy a conversion kit. It is not complex to convert a gasoline engine to propane, but it is dangerous. A proper conversion kit will have the necessary safety equipment to make your installation safer.

    • @keithnorris8982

      @@thejungleexplorer Thank you for your advice. I was not aware of the negatives regarding propane. My main thinking was avoiding carrying gas. My truck is diesel. I do have two 30 gallon tanks. My thought was pretty much just for charging my batteries when necessary, not so much for running air condition. Typically I won't be boon docking, I'll be plugged in. Thanx my friend, -keith
