Hey, I'm sorry I didn't see these replies sooner. So I really did stop avoiding barre chords and I have improved immensely. All barre chords used to be really hard for me, but now there are three that I find rather easy: the E shape, Am shape and Em shape. I still struggle barring the 1st and 2nd fret, but frets 3-7 are pretty easy for me. I'm going to keep working on getting better. Don't give up on barre chords. One day it will get better!
This exercise really works! I am 64, picked up guitar this year after no serious attempts for 50 years due to barre chords. My hands are small and not string however I can now barre several chords successfully after going through this exercise at least once a week.❤
Thank you Tony , As I have previously explained ,I had a stroke in June of 2018 and have been trying to find exercises to bring back my ability as an intermediate guitarist, barre chords were never a problem for me before and your technique of limbering up the index finger is bound to help ! One thing I did learn about barring with the index finger is using my Thumb behind the neck of the guitar as a lever to get the index finger to roll as you suggested and to provide leverage to get an even pressure without squeezing to achieve a clean tone.
You are the only teacher that talks about the finger angle to get a good barre chord. I’ve spent gobs of time learning the barre chords but could never get the B string going. Moved my finger angle and now it’s perfect and I am not killing my hand.
I found this very helpful. I would love it if you could talk about the hand, arm and even shoulder position in general I get cramping all over the area with very little time working at it, and have to stop.
I learned barre chords by pretending i could do them. I messed with it every once in a while, and one day I said “okay il sit down and actually learn it.” But then it came so easy and quickly i had it down to a science in a week with no more than 5-6 hours of practice in a week. Learned on accident almost haha.
5:22 "It's actually going to be easier on the 1st and 2nd fret, get a little more complicated on the 3rd and 4th, and even more complicated on the 5th and the 6th." That is the complete opposite of my experience. After playing for 3-4 years, I still have a hard time with barring the 1st and 2nd fret. It takes a lot more pressure across my finger to get a decent clear sound in a barre chord. I've been trying to avoid using barre chords towards the end of the neck because of it. It might be a problem with hand strength or technique, but I wonder if it might be the action, or like you stated, the way the neck is torqued.. I have a very low end Fender DG-60, so I'm probably not exactly working with a quality guitar here.
been learning guitar for a couple weeks and teaching myself using videos, and i was obviously avoiding barre chords because everytime i attempted one it was awkward and nothing happened, but after going through a few videos this exercise was the most simple and most rewarding, just struggling with the G and B string being muted now, but still way more progress than before. I find it helps with barres to roll the index finger along the strumming pattern. Pinching to emphasise strings. Used along with a palm mute at the bridge, you can get a nice tonal control, without working your hand too hard.
Great info.. On barr chords I nearly gave up on them. It was too difficult and painful. Then a friend handed me his more expensive guitar and I tried them and presto, no problem... Ones type and quality of guitar makes a night to day difference, especially at the beginning. I was attempting to learn things on a guitar that had too much space between strings and fretts. It was like smashing my fingers up against a cheese grader... Dont begin on a crappy, cheap guitar.. If you have no choice just keep in mind that the right guitar, as well, can make a huge difference...

Thank you for this lesson. I've tried to avoid bar chords and used partial chord voicings. This is an easy way to build up the strength in the index finger.
The BEST song I have found for practicing both staccato & barre chords is "Coz I Luv You" by Slade. It's only 3 chords (Am, Dm & Bb) that the book says are played as open chords but when played as barre chords (they way it is originally played) it becomes a 3 minute work-out that you can sing along to. And it can be played all over the neck to get the feel of how different areas have different requirements. Or to suit the pitch of your voice if you're trying to woo a woman. A week or 2 playing this will have your fingers used to the positions better & your index finger nicely building callous tissue or your money back! Or, whatever...
I’m having trouble with the 3rd and 4th strings as the underside of my middle joint slightly lifts up in the natural shape of my hand. Even though every area of my finger is pressed down hard and firm, there is still the gap there. And suggestions? So far everything else has improved using your technique. Thanks!
This is a Great Exercise Tony,it helps for F barre chords.Sometimes I cheat on the F and hang my thumb over the neck on the 6th string at the first fret F to make the chord, but I think you're better off by doing it your way,the correct way!!
I always found it helpful to layout my chord shape and then add the barre finger after when I was first learning to play. Not sure why, but it felt like if I did it the other way I always had buzz. Could have just been a mind thing but it seemed like it helped a lot.
Not sure if it will help others but to cope with initial pain , I’ve strapped my index finger with one layer of medical strapping tape and it’s working!!

Thanks!! That's exactly where I'm at with bar chords.
Hehe I started to learn guitar few months ago.... I had some wrist problems and still lack of strenght. So practice is the key. I'm hoping that in few weeks I will be able to say " barre is just a nother type of chord" :) I even bought super light strings (not liking the sound though!) so for time being untill ? played them out and then up the gauge
Currently trying to learn daen of hope from metro exodus, decided not to quit this song just because of barre chords, thanks a ton for this lesson I'm gonna add it into my practice sessions indefinitely :)
Thank you. This is very helpful and encouraging.
