I've probably done about 150 trips of psilocybin. Andrew Huberman description of how psychedelics can be used is pretty spot on. Personalities matter a lot because some people are naturally very introspective while others are not. I've solved a lot of my childhood trauma through tripping, but I also know people who use it, who never dig into their issues. Today, I mainly use it for recreational purposes, but now and then, I still end up digging into an issue. It really has changed my life completely. It has been amazing.
150? That’s rookie numbers

I have found that as I got older responsibility adulting stuff would creep into the trip.
I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did
The psychedelic experience is temporary but many people have permanent results
Mushroom completely turned my life around and my anxiety and panic attack disappeared and my personality changed into a much more generous loving person

Psychedelics killed my drug and alcohol dependencies - one trip two years ago to purge my depression and chronic anxiety from my system was the best decision I ever made. I've done psilocybin mushrooms a few times since, but after my last high dose trip I realized that the medicine has taught me enough for now. Would love to try something different like the LSD, just don't know where or how to get them, so hard to come by
When you've experienced psilocybin, the visions, the feeling that others feel, become really relatable and real. But when you haven't, it could sound very weird and wrong.
acid is my favorite, only done shrooms one time and that shit was extremely overwhelming never again. beautiful experience tho

Went to Peru twice, Ayahuasca, San Pedro, Vilca-Yopo snuff during multiple ceremonies. First hand experience is the only real experience... if you feel the call, find the courage & expand your mindset & get ready for a different outlook on everything! Go far enough & you'll learn as above, so below.(humbleness-humility-letting go)Good luck to those that venture inwards.
I love Andrew Huberman's scientific insight into these sorts of things, and it definitely adds to the interview. However, I do find myself wishing he gave the guests more space to talk, or kept his points briefer to allow the guest to respond. Especially at 8:00 Tom tried to add something and he got bulldozed
There is one hitch I've experienced with psychedelics. The neuroplasticity that I experienced brought my past in line with my current maturity and belief systems. That was life changing.
What was tricky is the so called "ego death." It felt at times that I had transcended the ego. That in itself is an ego reinforcing thought. "If you see buddha on the road, kill him" comes to mind. I think more useful terms would be ego revision or ego update
That is an astute observation about transcending ego. I suppose Buddha here is the way that leads to one who worships his “opened” mind? That in my estimation was one failure of the hippies. The supposition that you can escape this world, at least while alive. Or if not, the abandonment of the importance of living here while you are. As if somehow this flesh is any less a portion of what you ought to be. You can’t derive an ought from an is. But ought without is, is nothing but supposition.
It is & is meant to be temporary. If we feel like we’re beyond the ego in “normal” day-to-day life, it’s most definitely an illusion of the very thing we think we’re beyond!
In the temporary sense though ego death is 100% real - not a real “human experience” that we can expect to hold onto once we return to the civilized bodies & minds we live in, but one that may be the closest thing to the unchanging & infinite true reality that our beating-heart meat vehicles could ever get. It sure doesn’t seem temporary in the invite moment 😂 but it seems like that’s how it’s meant to be
k enough crazy talk I gotta go watch videos of cats knocking shit off tables
Yeah you can frequently see the massive ego on too-frequent users of psychedelics. Either that or they reject all cultural norms lol and they can live in a dump and genuinely be okay with it. Those don’t seem to have ego trouble
"Ego update", I really like that. Thank you for your comment, I'll think about it when I next talk with friends about psychedelics.
No ego death is accurate. Buddha isnt your ego. Buddha would represent the opposite of ego.
Psychedelics do hold value as tools for improving mental health. They can help you deal with tough things in a different light. In a medical setting I think intentions are important.
This doesn't mean they can't hold value recreationally. Andrew says people "gain new insight in positive ways". Intentions are not required to gain this insight, and I don't think we should look down on people without intentions, as if it's a waste or something.
My most enjoyable and profound trips were had outside with zero intentions. I prefer to just let the shrooms bring up what they may, and try not to fight but accept what they show me. Yes I've had difficult trips but ultimately they taught me more than the good ones.
There is so much value to taking mushrooms and listening to your favorite music (dark side of the moon) not just under MD supervision.
The benefits of psychedelics can be enjoyed at home. Just do your research, start at 2 grams and stay indoors until you gain some experience or Bonaroo. .
However the real experience starts at 3.5g.
Test your drugs. Particularly MDMA. I recommend starting with mushrooms.
My mushroom tea recipe:
Weigh out mushrooms (2 - 3.5g/person)
Boil water (1 mug/person) and turn off heat
Gently Crush mushrooms and steep covered in same vessel water was boiled in
Add berry flavored tea bags (2/mug)
Let steep for 30mins-1hour
Strain and enjoy
The tea helps avoid the unpleasant taste and a lot of the stomach discomfort.
The leftover gunk can be steeped again for a second kick in the butt. Best to do this immediately and avoid cooking once on drugs.
Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again but it’s just so hard to source here

I have a friend that used to work at the VA and now works at a ketamine therapy clinic in Takoma Washington. I would recommend looking into all these medications - they are no different than more conventional medications and may be superior but have been hampered by the difficulty in making money off a drug that has existed naturally for centuries.
If you can't access a clinical trial and want to venture on your own, you can take some measures to ensure you limit the risk of a bad experience, you can use a beta-blocker which prevents you from experiencing physical panic (racing heart, sweating etc.), and can also keep an anti-psychotic or benzodiazapine on hand as an "abort" mechanism in case you want to abort and try again at a later date. I find just knowing you have something like this available drastically reduces the chances of a negative experience, if you're like me and have a history of anxiety and/or episodes of dissociation or other situations where your mind can spiral out of control and potentially cause long term trauma etc. Best of luck, nothing comes close in terms of the potentially relief you can get from PTSD and painful memories.
@@StickHits thank you for that information, very much appreciate it.
@mikeofborg2 No problem brother I hope you find some relief. I'm autistic with ptsd (though not comparable to the trauma of war), and mushrooms were probably the most amazing discovery of my adult life, I got really sick recently and haven't been able to do them in a while but I can't wait to return to where I left off. I has grown quite a tolerance and did some absurdly large amounts with no ill effects, the most important thing I learned was to prepare everything in advance, every item I might need (including allergy and nausea meds), also making my room neat and tidy beforehand and pre-selecting entertainment like movies and music was very helpful. Any questions feel free to ask me here, I spent months researching and experimenting last year, and there was zero danger or lasting side effects even when I had the occasional weird/bad trip - the more experience I had the more control I found I had. Best of luck and thank you for your service.
This made me miss Terence McKenna so much. This Huberman guy is the best we have now? I've forgotten more about psychedelics than this guy will ever know.

Damn bro why so negative? Huberman is a scientist with a fair bit of knowledge about psyches but mainly other things like sleep. You should watch the Netflix show “how to change your mind” if you want these “deeper” insights. Also “this Huberman guy” never claimed to be anywhere near the best guy we have now in regards to psychedelics, nor has Tom or anyone for that matter.
Terrence McKenna Probably laid the groundwork for todays scientists put he and he’s brother are more like philosophers especially Terrence. Dennis have a more scientific approach to it and also work as a scientist by profession I think. The greatest contribution they made was probably how to grow them easily at home.
Huberman and guys like him are kind of the first generation of real scientists that really gets to research these things legally and clinically.

I would look to indigenous people more for wisdom regarding psychedelics not the scientific /academic community
I would suggest that the greater plasticity at earlier ages (I'm not talking about young children, but maybe early teens) could be very beneficial for the individual as well as the collective consciousness/unconscious. This of course would be in a society where we teach the children about these things and the potential power therein. Almost like a rite of passage. Use these early on instead of waiting until we become hardened in our ideas and beliefs of ourselves and reality. Indigenous peoples, to this day, partake in these types of rituals, and I think there can be profound benefit gained.
Do indigenous people do it on teenagers though? Genuine question
And it could be very beneficial but it could also be very harmful. It for sure needs to be handled with great care and extreme prejudice. Of course you know academics and MDs tend to publicly give sweeping generalisations about dangerous things because they can risk their career or licence
I was hoping Tom would talk more about his experience but it turned into a monolog.
Psychedelics have helped me but peeps need to be aware of the fact that these substances can drive you insane, they whould always be treated with respect and when your brain dumps a shit ton of serotonin, what goes up must come down. So the days after your experience can be hard. Moderation, respect, and knowing that you can always add to a trip but cant subtract so go slow, sometimes its better to have no trip than to trip so hard you lose yourself or drop into a nightmare state. Hes right about when you are younger your brain is still deceiving anyways thats my two cents also space that shit out like once a week if you can…
Can fix trauma in the brain I am a advocate for that I'm a living experiment positive outcome
This guy is kinda getting on my nerves going on multiple podcasts lately claiming that classic psychedelics give a "serotonin dump" or that they are releasing agents of serotonin like molly. This is nonsense. Other than the fact that it makes no sense (increasing serotonin wouldn't give a 'tripping' effect anyways), it's just not how hallucinogenic experiences work (even on non-psychedelics). Sure, psychedelics bind to serotonin *receptors* but they don't directly "release" or even necessarily increase levels of serotonin. What they do is agonize the 5HT2A serotonin receptors specifically, but other than that; we don't actually know exactly what the drug molecule is doing there to produce these specific kinds of experiences. We just know that it's tied to activation of that receptor, somehow.

The last time I did shrooms was like 6 months ago. I very rarely ever do psychedelics. But I was at my friend's house the last time I did it and he has three children and I remember sitting in the chair zoning out feeling like I was about to have an anxiety attack because two of his children where in my face purposely messing with me. It's like they somehow knew that I wasn't all there lol thankfully my friend realized and made them leave me alone. It's crazy cuz as much as I was tripping I still knew it was reality. Like I knew that was his kids and I would never do anyting to hurt them. I was present but gone at the same time, idek how else to explain it.

Andrew your vibes to me come off pretentious, just because he had a bad experience when he was younger doesn't mean you should have to wait to experience psychedelics, I agree with knowing your intentions going in, and giving credit to clinical trials is BS.
Thank Maria Sabina and Timothy Leary for the movement in the 60's and before her you can go back to the Mayans. I wonder what he really took in that chocolate and if he really thinks that was Ayahuasca. I am no shaman but would say i am a physconaut and i have never heard of Ayahuasca coming in chocolate forms.....maybe Pharma Huasca (DMT and an MAOI)..... very interesting to me that he goes around saying he has done Ayahuasca when whatever it actually is far different from a true Ayahuasca ceremony. Sounds like he benefited and glad he enjoyed himself, just wish we could get the mis-information under control and i would have thought Huberman would have pushed him a bit harder on what he thinks he took.
Yeah there's no way there was enough Ayahuasca as well as psilocybin + an MAOI in a normal sized chocolate, taht they would just freely give someone after giving them Kanna too. This is wildly irresponsible and totally unlikely.

Drugs suck.
If its true that the brain makes new neural pathways on psychedelic experiences, why would it follow that this shouldn't be done before the age of 25 when the brain is still plastic? It seems intuitive to me that in face these SHOULD be done during the time when the brain can realize these experiences and that benefit from them much more (more temporary)
I wonder how it would effect an Alzheimer's patient. If it creates new neural pathways could it bypass some of the bad things in dementia?

I took so much DMT, 300 hits+ LSD, ecstasy/MDMA in crystal form - licking it, shrooms, ketamine - between ages 17-20 and then just stopped. I spent ~3 years of my life in a different world. I'm so curious who I would have become, had I waited longer and didn't go completely crazy, tripping balls not only every weekend, but also usually every Wednesday, as well. Guess it wasn't too bad. I'm successful and my mind is chill. But my friends who didn't stop.... that's a whole different story. All of them except for maybe 3 are REALLY dumb. They have drug molecules tattooed all over their bodies and can't carry on a thought long enough to process it and shit. Psychedelics are definitely fine.... 1-2 times a year, depending who the person is, because it shows you, in tangible form, what negative aspects of reality are eating at you, and you can pluck them from your mind and just laugh at them. But too much of anything is bad. All balance.
EDIT: Also, because maybe this helps just *one* person. I've never had a bad trip. You must go into every experience happy and knowing who you are at your core and that it's simply a drug (external whatever). If you're in the throes of a wild trip, you can just remember: "Oh yeah, lol, I'm a happy dude/chick," and then you're good. At least that's always worked for me. I've tried to have bad trips but I always end up laughing because the idea precedes the intended purpose, therefore negating the desired result.
I grew up in a similar way and it seems like only the people doing molly all the time really became stupid.. mdma isn't even considered a psychedelic so that is probably why. Yea it has "psychedelic properties" at super high doses but still far from psychedelic and surely does a ton of a damage to your body. I try to avoid comparing psychedelics and stimulants when it comes to physical side effects as much as possible. I really do think classic psychedelics are harmless
Sounds like a waste of good drugs.
I ain't saying huberman is my hero, but he's definitely a homie...
The way Huberman monologues and won't even let the host of the show speak is exactly why I don't like Huberman
Psychedlics promotes neuroplasticity so why would you stay away from using them before you're 25...when the brain is more susceptible to plasticity?
Because you don't need to mess with it before plastic goes away
This guy is saying all kinds of things that aren't making a ton of sense. He kinda just seems like a know it all and WOW!!! He talks over Tom nonstop!
At that age you're still at the age when making new neural connections is relatively easy without the aids of psychedelics, so there may be less utility in adding them to this system. An analogy I read, I think in Michael Pollan's book, is that the brain and it's neural pathways can be compared to a mountain slope that's used for skiing. The more one particular thought or idea or association happens it's like using the same ski track, the the ski lines get worn into the snow, and it makes it easier to get into that same track in the future, so the same associations become somewhat ingrained. What psychedelics do is a kind of like a grenade on the ski slope, removed the previous tracts so new ones might form. If you're under 25, the analogy would be something to the effect that the snow is still falling, and you've not done enough slopes for the tracks to be there yet, so the psychedelics may be less beneficial.
