    Car and Driver got the 6mt Accord in a 6.6 sec sprint to 60mph. I guess that high altitude REALLY hurts this car.

    10.7 is actually respectable for the conditions. Lyons CO is about 5300' and since it was stated 92 degrees, that brings a density altitude of 8600'. Ouch, that's hard conditions for any naturally aspirated car. Only 77% of the rated power is actually being produced, or about 145hp.

    2 secs sound a lot for just a different transmission which is so fuel efficient which means very little loss. I feel the engine tuning also has a role to play. Great job, Honda on the cvt. Shows the engineering excellence of Honda compared to Nissan who have been trying to refine their cvts since the Murrano was launched. Homda was almost 10 years late to the cvt party and they did an outstanding job in refinement.

      +Robert Rivera So, you really don't like the car with the CVT, however will put up with it because you like the mileage? I have purchased 5 new Accords with automatic transmissions, but will NEVER buy another one if CVT in the 4 cylinder is my only option. I hate these CVT transmissions so much, that I would rather buy a used Accord or a Toyota. Many people also complain about poor mileage they are seeing when they drive the car with 4 or 5 passengers and under spirited driving since the engine is constantly stuck in the 4500+ rpm range.

    • @MrNeedHeIp

      It's been a year ..I put a K&N intake and that seen to put more spring in to it..and yeah the engine will not go pass 45000 rpms..once again ..great on gas..would I buy it again..yes other then oil changes no problems

      +Harris Anwar The V6 Accords get the best transmissions made. A 6 speed auto and a 6 speed manual. Unfortunately, the V6's? They cost nearly $10,000 more than a nice 4 cylinder LX. If they made basic LX V6 models for under around $25,500? They could sell millions of the V6's as well...

    Why would a CVT have "PADDLE SHIFTERS"??????????

    • @umaxen01
      @umaxen01 9 лет назад

      +mikesanto70 Not only that, but CVT's are NOT as efficient as they say they are. If you drive briskly? You can get better mileage out of a 5 speed, 100% of the time and you won't have to put up with a moaning engine all damned day long. It's hard to believe that one of the best transmissions in the world (the Accords automatic 5 speed transmission) was replaced with this piece of crap.

    • @JacobTJ1
      @JacobTJ1 9 лет назад +4

      +mikesanto70 to manually control the ratio.. to give you some control over the computer managed.. make very good sense to me.. and you probably wouldn't want to use it in this drag race scenario... you would use it like you would use the overdrive off in an automatic... quickly wake up the engine from a eco cruise condition

    There's a trick to these sports for better 0-60 times. I noticed when I put it in sport mode and just let it go as fast as the cvt let's me you actually have to back off a bit and you can feel it speed up. The bigger trick is put it in sport mode then tap it into first gear. From there when you take off don't touch the shifter and the cars computer shifts it at its max rpm. Doing this gets it into the mid to low 7s.

    Actually really surprised by this. Then I go to look up 0-60 times, and I see 7.6 seconds to hit 60mph in the 4 cyclinder cvt accord. My first surprise was that this thing ran so slow with you guys when my Nissan Altima runs about the same, and maybe takes me 8.5 seconds(CVTs are so very dependent on throttle control), but you guys are squeezing out 10s. Also doing that on an engine that isn't broken in yet. Just seems really off, but either way, it's a commuter, and a good one at that. Keep the older stick shift cars around, we'll be seeing less and less of them.

    By doing this the computer does a perfect sport shift and it really does go a lot faster. I have the air intake on it and it screams using the computer sport shift. A lot of people don't know about the fact that in sport mode while using the shifters just put it in first and let the computer do the rest for 0-60.

    If you like automatics, you shouldn't dislike this CVT. Honda's CVT is the automatic of automatics. It does what it was intended to do just fine. If you're looking to just get to your destination easily and efficiently, the CVT is just right. But if you're buying a CVT looking for an engaging driving experience, you're really buying the wrong transmission. If you're really looking for more driving enjoyment, get a manual. Honda has everyone covered here.

  • @paulwilliams2080

    Try with a rolling start, say 20 to 70, might get a surprise. Sluggish from a stop is a normal artefact of cvt. Testers know this drive take up characteristic of cvt before they start. These are smooth driving,economical family cars, never intended for the drag strip.

    Why do you use the paddle shifters on a CVT? Isn't the point of a CVT to have the engine run at max power no matter what ground speed you're at? Using the paddle shifters only handicaps it to being a manual transmission. Every time you shift through discrete gears on the CVT you drop off the max power.

  • @jkutches17
    @jkutches17 9 лет назад

    One secret i found to accelerate faster in an Outback is to engage sport mode, 1st gear. Right before the redline, switch back into "D". In D it won't redline till 60mph. This way you redline at about 30-40mph and hold the redline.

    Great review, love seeing MTs dominate when they're available in "regular" cars. Sure, it may have been hotter while testing the CVT (I assume that Roman wouldn't have been wearing a hoodie in the MT if it were over 90 that day) and there's all the other variability that the guys mention when comparing cars, but 2 seconds is hard to explain away to testing variability.

    I tried it several ways Cody. I used the paddle shifters - which was slow, left it alone and let the CVT work, which was slightly less-slow and I changed launching techniques... nothing helped. It is a smooth CVT, one of the best I sampled - it's just setup for economy.

    This is a great family car. I bought it primarily my wife as it is safe and reliable and traveling to watch our son play college ball. We didn't purchase it for speed. I just sold my Black knight 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 manual six speed that had a 6.1 HEMI 425hp. That's an exhaust note. The whole thing with zero to sixty being measured on an accord/fusion is a joke. People also want mpg, sedans without buying a weinie Prius. So if its speed you want, the best bang for the buck is a 2010 SRT8 Challenger manual tranny which can be had for roughly the new price of a 2014 Honda Accord EXl with navi.

    You know what? You're not the first person to ask that regarding a CVT-equipped car. The answer is, yes - I let it spool up to about 3,000 rpm, on a pre-recorded run and it was very sluggish. The only CVT car I've driven that allowing the CVT to spool up helped was the Mitsubishi Lancer AWD with theINVECS-III system. It was still slow, but it was a tad faster.

    i did a test and i got around 6 seconds. I have a 2013 sport with ctv and i slammed the pedal in sport mode. I dont think they slam the pedal but gradually accelerate. At 5:50-6:00 he didn't press the pedals before he drove, meaning he didn't goto Gear 1 but stayed in drive-mode essentally. You always have to shift to gear one AFTER shifting it into Sport mode...

    • @philipjackson9855
      @philipjackson9855 9 лет назад

      AJ Johnson He said the elevation accounted for about a second and a half, but as far as the other 1.5 seconds it may be because paddle shifting and even sport mode without paddle shifting is slower than in D. I usually get better overall acceleration from D, but better responsiveness from paddle shifting. Here in Tampa my Sport is doing about ^^that too.

    • @arniejonassen
      @arniejonassen 9 лет назад

      Philip Jackson That may be possible. Mine feels slower accelerating at low speeds in Sport mode but on the highway it's very responsive.

    • @samwh4775
      @samwh4775 5 лет назад

      I think is because they test the 0-60 in the sport mode , and honda put the sport mode , because transmit a weird experience different from D mode , but D mode is faster "tested", the engine react faster and send the car to the redline faster and run faster , I don’t know why they don’t do that to the sport mode , they make the sport mode slower but fell more like a regular auto 😓

  • @JRossiification

    I don't know much about sea level differences, but I own a 2013 EX. If you go for a speed run you can trigger higher acceleration by sinking the pedal, lifting off maybe an inch-inch and a half, and popping it back down again. When I need the power I can do this anywhere from 2-4 times before it cranks max. I typically operate at sea level but I have gotten roughly an 8 second 0-60 on a fully automatic by doing this (this is with the EX 4-cyl engine which claims a few horsepower less than the sport). It sounds like you're popping it up a level every time you do it. Same thing used to work for my 09 corolla, I think it has to do with the electronic interface for the acceleration control.

    My 100% factory stock, 2005 Honda Accord with 165 HP and 5 speed automatic transmission will do 144 mph at 4800 rpm with the computer limiter turned off. The factory sets the computer to restrict the engine to 4333 rpm in 5th gear, which is exactly 130 mph. They do this for obvious safety reasons as well as the factory 130 mph "HR" rated tires.

    The CVT on the Accord Sport is fastest in manual mode but NOT brake torquing. Also you don't manually upshift, it will do it for you at redline. Doing that I have pulled a 10.1 out of a 2014 Accord Sport CVT at 6000ft. The same car also does a low 16 in the 1/4 at the same altitude, which means it is picking up a lot towards the top. The CVT is just slow off the line. Even with the CVT it is still a blast to drive down a canyon road.

    You guys have not been doing any "mashups" recently. You only put similar cars against each other. Can we please see more of a mixup?

    I have a 2013 accord with a cvt and by no means is it fast, but I've timed 0-60 in about 7.2 seconds at sea level.

    • @samwh4775
      @samwh4775 4 года назад

      Brandon9thGen yes because at sea level they are quick for a 4 cylinder non turbo, but they don’t have to much torque, so at high altitude they are very slow, imagine that the V6 at high altitude do the same 0 to 60 time of the accord sport CVT 🤷🏻‍♂️😅

    Much better than the Fusion, which is a rental car. C&D got 0-60 in 6.6 with the manual.
    The Accord not only is much faster than the Fusion, it gets much better mileage too. Check Consumer Reports tests. Only the willfully ignorant would buy a Fusion.

    All 4 cylinders accords have cvts the sport is called sport because u can get 1 with a manual trans.

  • @arthurhodo56
    @arthurhodo56 7 лет назад +1

    well my opinion is that all trans should be designed for best fuel economy ,but if you want a fast car go buy a Lambo, or something, the fact is there building better cvt's that can manage more hp, guys don't think you can pull up besides a new Honda or maxima or any other cvt these days, the'll leave u right were you stand!

    i heard and have seen POV videos, the accord's CVT shifts just like a normal car when you drive normally. its got a more realistic and dramatic RPM drop when it "shifts". its really nice i wouldnt mind one. but when you go full throttle then you notice a CVT isnt really the ideal transmission.

    Thanks guys! Exciting as usual. I suspect propagandizing manual in US is a bit of uphill battle, as there may be a couple of tens of people who can shift manual there, eh?

    P.S. I too, bemoan all things regarding CVTs and automatics although I do like the automatic in my dad's 2006 Nissan sedan and the six-speed in the FIAT 500. That said, I personally would not go for either one w/ either transmission. I'll stick with five gears and a clutch. Thank you very much.

    The benefit of a Honda CVT is that it can stay in VTEC the whole time during acceleration.

    Better way to do in a cvt mode is put on s, then lower your gear to first, and slam the gas until it shift itself on redline and that shift gives u a little torque push

    I currently own a 2010 civic SI and I'm starting to look around for a replacement. I'd rather go for a 2015 civic SI but I really can't deal with the red seats... In your opinion, would the manual Honda Accord sport be a good compromise? It seems to have similar acceleration?

    I hate the way the CVT sounds, I like hearing the gears shift. A CVT sounds like some forgot to put Trans Fluid in the car,always sounds like its slipping! The 6spd looks fun to drive though!

  • @garymartin7842

    I may be mistaken but the CVT in my 2013 LX has no paddle shifters and S means Second, they would've been quicker putting it in D for Drive and letting the CVT do it's thing.. like a snowmobile. Second seemed to cancel their speed @ redline.

    Who killed CVT?
    My Dad in the 60's had a tiny weak little DAF and it took no prisoners at the lights.
    Williams F1 once tried one once, it immediately took 4 seconds off their usual lap time, and it was banned forever by FIA. Who made it a slow solution?

  • @CONDLAUR

    In my opinion accelerating a CVT is like accelerating a manual in a higher gear at low revs. At 5:49 it looks like the car was coasting in third, if it was manual, and tried real hard to match the revs by accelerating.

    Did you try going only part throttle until you started moving then go WOT? It feels like some cars will purposely bog down if you go immediate WOT from standstill.

  • @kfr19
    @kfr19 11 лет назад

    This is true if you're comparing to a traditional slushbox or CVT. If you're comparing to a dual-clutch, then that's a different story. I love manual transmissions, but unfortunately they have their limitations.

  • @jjjrickey
    @jjjrickey 7 лет назад +1

    You're not doing it correctly, need to click between drive and sport as fast as you can. This tricks the computer to letting the engine rev up. It's programmed for fuel efficiency and will normally try to over load the engine and never downshift because that uses more gas. This is the case for the 2014 accord; I hate the way it's programmed.

    complete bullshit, my base model 2014 honda accord Lx CVT does 0-60 in about 7.5.... Almost as fast as my old 2006 Audi A4T Quattro. You have to start in D and switch to sport at around 45-50mph (maybe sooner), for the love of god make sure you are not in Econ mode, and

      Engine braking, that's the only use for paddle shifter on CVT.
