Pushing 60 and August 26 2022 I found myself in the pit of a MCR concert in Raleigh NC. By far best concert I ever attended. A month later and I'm still on a post concert high.
I'm about to get controversial: For those of us that were in this particular scene back in the day, My Chem was not emo. They got labelled emo for a bunch of very logical reasons that we all argue about...but it wasn't their music. They are a post-hardcore band with a singer that can sing, one metal guitarist and one punk guitarist. They completely reinvent themselves with each album (And manage to have a narrative for each, sometimes with a graphic novel!) and gracefully transcend punk, metal, rock and pop. They were my guilty pleasure back in 2004. Now IDGAF. They're genius. Check out Sleep or Ghost of You or their cover of Bob Dylan's Desolation Row for something completely different from what you've heard.
@@baggypantsman ikr, i mean the album The Black Parade, love it, not emo at all, me myself was an emokid back in the days so..i dunno, a lot of things was confusing in the emo phase LMAO
Bullets: _Post-Hardcore, Punk_ Three Cheers: _Punk, Alternative_ Black Parade: _Alternative, Rock Opera (with a dash of jazz & polka)_ Danger Days: _Rock, Pop, Electronic_
@@baggypantsman mostly, first wave emo (Texas is the Reason, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc.) came out of that Hardcore/Post-Hardcore scene. All the same venues, most of the same people. I think that they got labelled this way because Geoff Rickly produced their first album and they did the big summer tours with punk and emo bands...plus, Gerard's personal style didn't fit anywhere else. It wasn't punk, it wasn't goth. It wasn't really what emo kids looked like at the time, either, but that was the most "flexible" label. He looked like a hardcore kid most of the time in the early days, but My Chem was definitely not hardcore. images.app.goo.gl/eqfKA86rQHV8j2mg6 Then there was the fuzzy skeleton onesie. 😉
These guys were my absolute favourite band back in the day 😍 I think alot of people were put off by the hardcore fans to be fair, and it's such ashame cos this band are seriously talented. The black parade album is genuinely a masterpiece. It's a theatrical journey and so many of the songs just give you that euphoric take on the world feeling. I'd probably recommend "mama" (life changing 😂) and "dead!" (Just great guitar riffs!) But the whole album does deserve a listen in order, because it reads like a story xx
As a young teen this song was my intro to styles with heavier guitars. Found out I like it up to melodic death metal. I wasn't emo at the time I found MCR; I was goth. Still am goth 15 or so years later, but I still enjoyed them (then again, I listen to a lot of stuff unrelated to rock or metal too. I don't limit myself). Famous Last Words is still my favorite MCR song.
Did you know that Gerard Way also creates the awesome graphic novel The Umbrella Academy which is now a series on Netflix plus him and Joe Rogan are cousins.
This is one of my favorite songs from MCR and one of my all time favorite songs in general. I remember seeing the making of the video and them saying they basically had one take for the video because the fire was real and getting closer to them as they performed and they could feel the heat especially the drummer.
MCR is my absolute favorite band ever! I was an adult while they were big and I still blast them while I'm driving or cleaning. Luckily my oldest is a fan too so we bond over our fandom.
my chem are great. i've been a fan for YEARS and i can't think of any other band that has stuck with me for so long and is still my favorite. mcr is what happens when people with such different backgrounds and tastes in music come together to create something absolutely unique. each brings a part of themselves to this thing, little pieces of their own madness. i'm so fucking glad they're back together. i suggest listening to "the sharpest lives", "mama", "sleep" and "i never told you what I do for a living". those are just amazingly creative, some of their best, but if you want something more mainstream then "i'm not okay", "helena", "teenagers" or "na na na" are great too also about the emo thing, i think at the time they took being called emo as an insult (which to be fair it was a lot of the time) but now it mostly isn't like that anymore? so i think them being offended to be called that by fans now is kind of funny and a bit cringey pff, just like, lighten up
There is a band called Spanish Love Songs that I think you could get in to. They are loosely considered midwest emo or midwest punk. Even if you don't do a video for them, I highly recommend them. Love their song called Losers.
Great song. (not so) fun fact: the video shoot took so long the fire behind them got out of control and Bob Bryar (the drummer) got third-degree burns on his leg.

You're right that MCR wasn't emo. I guess their music just happened to appeal to scene kids lol

that song is just perfect!!

I remember showing my mum this video for the first time and she immediately said so matter-of-factly: "The singer looks like a panda in this."
Haven't heard this one either. Good song!

feel the heat? he actually got second and third degree burns and kept playing rather than stopping the video, ended up with gangrene.
