Man I've learned to love hip hop at a young age. I have a cousin who's fairly famous in the hip hop community especially the Latino community. He introduced me to hip hop when I was a young timid kid from moving around so much and having a really stern God fearing military father and made me fall in love with hip hop in two languages. I can literally bar for bar recite the Blue Collar cypher with you, Loaded, Ars, and Ice. I ended up meeting Ars at a pivotal point in my life and he actually sat down with me and gave me advice for life. Not about rapping or battle rap. He took me aside and talked to me about decisions I was making. I was in my early 20s around that point. I unfortunately didn't listen and boul was right about what would happen. Besides that I've watched y'all hold it down from the bottom all the way to the pinnacle of the culture. You deserve your flowers man. You've been talkin the same and never switched up. You have adapted and still talked the same shit. You have evolved and still talked the same shit. Now you have businesses, you're still a top tier battle rapper, and now a respected blogger. I'm 42yo. I've been following battle rap for a very long time. I remember when there weren't any leagues. Niccas just meet up in the street and rap. This shii is starting to be just like that bs childish wrestling. I remember when I stopped watching wrestling... I'm talking Von Eric, Junkyard Dog, Jake the Snake era. I'm starting to get that same feeling with battle rap. It's starting to get watered down. Just like football and basketball too.
A lot has changed over the last decade and a half. One thing that has remained the same is the intense level of toxicity. One major change is how much the street code and mentality has become blurred. You got snitches, cowards, people recording calls, people disseminating those calls, people lying, people coming in battles, not being checked from stealing deposits, and all type of things happening that wouldn't have been tolerated back in the day.
There's no morals or limits or codes any more between men and by niggas exposing other niggas exposes what type of person they really are. and breaking every type of code and giving falsified reasons I've been watching battle rap 20 years and I've never seen battle rap stoop this low to where dudes who though they were your friend were never your friend to begin with. Good talk. That's happens in every field though, not just battle rap... It's considered method acting in the entertainment field, some take it too far, get into real beef, legal issues or even pass before their time but some learn how to separate their personal lives from the role they're playing. No different in battle rap and I think, I HOPE as a community we're smart enough to know the difference when it gets out of hand. IMO, the culture just needs more mentors to educate the ones coming up on how to market themselves more "safely". Salute.
I enjoy the sport. IMO battle rap is one of the last places to find true lyricism. I'm good with them presenting themselves as artists and sticking to that story. Otherwise, having bodies or hustling across states then strapping a mic to your chest and confessing da shit in a crowded room fulla cameras is....really different.

I've been a battle rap fan for years. I used to be excited for any url battle I can get a hold of. Now days I only tune in if I'm really bored and don't have shit to do. The biggest change for me is individuality and uniqueness of style. Every battle back then was a style clash because nobody sounded the same. Everyone had a unique sound this was at its peak in the early URL error. Now every body has four bar setups with a punch EVERY battle rapper sounds the same. If you read battle rap verses without hearing a voice you wouldn't tell the difference between modern battle rappers. Hitman was aggressive on the tie up your daughter shit. Goodz with the slick talk. Hollow with the sometimes corny but extremely witty pen. Yung ill with the crazy word play. Math, verb, rex, arsenal and the list goes on Everyone had a style and nobody got Bood you never heard a boo. Then b magic came along with the back to back punch. And everything went downhill from there.. Then the rum nittys, tworks etc took it to another level and fans started booing if you didn't have punch after punch. So everyone was forced to adapt to this. Even the URL error rappers who had unique styles like Big T or verb or anyone on that list I mentioned has to conform to 4 bar setups with a punch or get Bood. Now it's all about punchlines and drama and fake fights. It's fucked up but battle rap is dead everyone sounds the same I miss the old days. I agree with goodz Mook has remained the same and kept his style. Kudos to him for that. I'd like to get your opinion on this Gooodz being one who has always had a unique style. A lot has changed over the last decade and a half. One thing that has remained the same is the intense level of toxicity. One major change is how much the street code and mentality has become blurred. You got snitches, cowards, people recording calls, people disseminating those calls, people lying, people coming in battles, not being checked from stealing deposits, and all type of things happening that wouldn't have been tolerated back in the day.
There's no morals or limits or codes any more between men and by niggas exposing other niggas exposes what type of person they really are. and breaking every type of code and giving falsified reasons I've been watching battle rap 20 years and I've never seen battle rap stoop this low to where dudes who though they were your friend were never your friend to begin with. Good talk. That's happens in every field though, not just battle rap... It's considered method acting in the entertainment field, some take it too far, get into real beef, legal issues or even pass before their time but some learn how to separate their personal lives from the role they're playing. No different in battle rap and I think, I HOPE as a community we're smart enough to know the difference when it gets out of hand. IMO, the culture just needs more mentors to educate the ones coming up on how to market themselves more "safely". Salute.
I enjoy the sport. IMO battle rap is one of the last places to find true lyricism. I'm good with them presenting themselves as artists and sticking to that story. Otherwise, having bodies or hustling across states then strapping a mic to your chest and confessing da shit in a crowded room fulla cameras is....really different.

My introduction to Goodz was his battle against Rich Dollars, the first battle I ever saw was Mook vs Party Artie (RIP). For me, I love the essence of battle rap but in my opinion it’s totally different from what it once was. That hardcore street vibe that was once there is gone, now it’s almost like watching WWE.

I'm 26 and I remember watching battle rap as a teenager, 16, thinking "damn they really hate each other" till I saw Hitman and Con dapping each other on stage lmao I was like "wait... wtf" since then, like WWE, I know it's a show. Yeah the drama is too much sometimes. "Love and Hiphop"/Twitter Spaces.. that's boring and played out, so I just pay attention to bars. Im surprised when people actually do fight or are actually from the street, but the bars are so much more fun to me tho. I can't imagine sticking with battle rap for a decade for the drama, the bars kept me here. Interesting topic Goodz!

I've been a battle rap fan for years. I used to be excited for any url battle I can get a hold of. Now days I only tune in if I'm really bored and don't have shit to do.
The biggest change for me is individuality and uniqueness of style. Every battle back then was a style clash because nobody sounded the same. Everyone had a unique sound this was at its peak in the early URL error.
Now every body has four bar setups with a punch EVERY battle rapper sounds the same. If you read battle rap verses without hearing a voice you wouldn't tell the difference between modern battle rappers.
Hitman was aggressive on the tie up your daughter shit. Goodz with the slick talk. Hollow with the sometimes corny but extremely witty pen. Yung ill with the crazy word play. Math, verb, rex, arsenal and the list goes on Everyone had a style and nobody got Bood you never heard a boo. Then b magic came along with the back to back punch. And everything went downhill from there.. Then the rum nittys, tworks etc took it to another level and fans started booing if you didn't have punch after punch. So everyone was forced to adapt to this. Even the URL error rappers who had unique styles like Big T or verb or anyone on that list I mentioned has to conform to 4 bar setups with a punch or get Bood.
Now it's all about punchlines and drama and fake fights.
It's fucked up but battle rap is dead everyone sounds the same I miss the old days.
