You can turn the display OFF (plastic piece won't lift) by having the ignition ON and pressing the middle of the 5 buttons at the left of the steering wheel - the one marked with HUD - right under the vent on the left end of the dash. You are welcome.

why is the heads up display a poor quality piece of plastic when this could be projected to the windscreen like other cars.
we went to try one of these cars and this quality put me off.

For it to work on the windshield requires very expensive reflective glass. I have that on an older car and a windshield replacement cost $1400. And that was 10 years ago.
