The best "How-To" video of this radio I've run across so far. So many videos of the RF 919 are done by people who haven't a clue how to operate a shortwave receiver. You're the only one who detailed the use of the Pre-Selector (aka: Antenna Tuner) and the antenna selection switch on the back. Thanks for this video... nice work.
Awesome video! Re-iterating, by far, this is the best video on this radio. It encouraged me to buy the radio. I should be getting it some time today. I'll have a big jump start with this radio. TNX 73, WA2WHV
By far the best review of this radio. Very well done. Thank you. U have downloaded this one for when my unit arrives this week. Really looking forward to seeing mine in action.😊
I don't understand, in 2024, making a 250€ radio witch mute on each step when you tune it. It's really something they have to upgrade. This is why reviews are good thing, thanks for your sharing !
@Stefaon If you use HeadPhones, your ears will thank you for that mute.! Nothing worse than rupturing your eardrum because of a very loud signal suddenly...
They can change the tuning mute but the poor audio quality on SSB and poor ECSS quality is a fundamental flaw in all these DSP radios/Chips and can not and has not yet been solved and one reason I have sold all but 1 of my DSP radios and do not ever intend to buy another. There are only 2 portable radios out there with the audio Quality on SSB that you can still buy new today such as the Tecsun PL-680, it offers the best available ECSS performance that blows away any DSP radios using just filters alone. The PL-680 and a good receiving antenna such as the Bonito MA305 and you have one of the best receiving stations possible today from a portable radio. The Sangean ATS-909 x2 is probably the only DSP radio that offers excellent audio quality and good ECSS performance. For the money, nothing beats the PL-680 without DSP or fancy screens it's the best out there and I wish manufacturers stopped producing DSP rubbish because it only offers cheaper radios to the manufacturer and more expensive radios to the buyer nothing more.
Basically these Chinese companies all milk the same small group of least-cost radio-on-a-chip ICs (formerly known as Silicon Labs Si473x) for at least 10 years now. They present "new" radios based on these chips almost every year and meanwhile there seems to be some competition going on who can flesh out the design the most but basically they're all some iteration of same old, same old. The only (very) fundamentally different design in the low-cost RX segment, playing in a whole different performance league is from Belarus (Belka).
@@gerdpfeil Yes, there's not much effort put into circuit design, they don't need coils and don't have to tune up everything using a chip. As I said, very hard to beat the Tecsun PL-680 and it's a pity they don't improve on their analogue radios but that's not going to happen The belka is exceptional only it's not a nice radio to use, so I don't use it and only used it briefly, I should have sold it. If it was in a larger box with buttons and knobs I'd be a lot happier. There's just no enjoyment in using it like I get from a real radio.

I just got mine yesterday, pulled out the Antenna, and it came off completely from the case,No retaining screw, great quality control! Didn’t expect this from a high quality radio😢
Thanks for the review. I was considering this owing to its wide frequency coverage and no touch screen, and the app control might have been a bonus if the app wasn't terrible with VoiceOver or Talkback, but that soft mute. ... Not a fan at all. Looks like my sights are set back on a Tecsun PL990.
Fantastic radio with a ton of features! Eagerly awaiting for mine to arrive. What is your verdict ? Does it have a recording feature ? And a random mp3 play feature ?
Was thinking of buying this radio but now when i see the 1 KHz mute it very much turns me off. I allready have a smaller radio with same rx chip that acts like that. It has great rx but its so annoying with the mute.
Hi great interesting video, I wonder how the rxer performs with external antenna in the bands . Ie if overloads at all , love the idea of the antenna trim knob , last time I saw that was in the Sony icf2001 . 73 mark
Paul I received mine last week from Radioddity like the radio but hope for both a manual and firmware update that will null the soft mute tuning and give me the ability to use any démod mode in any band like my Belka (All mode) also the ability to access all Eq bands on AM mode not just WBFM. I love the backlight keyboard as I tend to use mind outside at night. Why they skipped the 160M band is a head scratcher. Well enough with the gripes once I found out how to set-up my MW antenna, plus use the LNA and band pass filters something the manual needs an improvement on it started to impress me on MW, and now SW on I figured what setting to choose, besides Default Antenna settings. I still haven’t really tested on VHF/UHF bands except WBFM (broadcast) were it is very good. Well this is not a turn on a play radio, it is a radio one needs to read and understand the manual radio to challenge my tired old brain ….😊! 73! Have a great day!
No firmware upgrade will remove the soft muting, that seems to be an inherent limitation of the 47xx radio chips if not paired with external VFOs like some of the Tecsuns. Like most of those radios it doesn't mute in fine-tuning mode tho.
What a pity of radio! 1KHz soft-muting overshadows all its good qualities like their magnific audio, antenna matchings,. filter settings, backlight keys... The developer should have to had realize of it, because scanning the bands without muting is a must for any radio worth its salt. specially in a medium-high price range .. If the manufacturer corrected it, it would be a radio to take into account., Thanks Paul for this complete review! 73s, Pedro.
Good Sir, this has got to be The Most Extensive tutorial online about this radio! THANK you, ever so much! Seriously! You've covered nearly everything in such informative and very helpful detail! I have only one question: While the part of the (manual?) which charts all of the channels available for this radio's reception (AM, FM, SW, SSB, etc.), it seems that CW (Continuous Wave/Morse Code) is not included in the list - HOWEVER, many have said that it can be achieved at 500 HZ (MHZ? KHZ?) - is this true? Can you hear Morse Code at such frequencies, or any frequencies that this radio can pick up? Do, Please, let us know! And again, THANK YOU, for the internet's most in-depth review on this piece of equipment! 🙂
It looks amazing, but from your video, I think it isn't worth the money. For this price, you can get new Malahite, Belka, and Tecsun radios, which are more refined, have no audio cut-out, have a better encoder, etc. Also at first it looks rugged, but there isn't any IP protection from water or dust, so this ruggedness is just eye candy. The tuning encoder looks loose too, not as sturdy as an Icom's. In the case of functionality, that's amazing. Maybe the next one with a decent encoder and without this cut-out will be better. But last but not least, I'm happy, that the SWL world gets new RIGs and isn't so forgotten as the shortwave broadcast bands.
Thank you for the very long detailed review, looks and sounds better than I expected ❤. Can it do ECSS reception of the Mediumwave band??? Many times, a very strong station will be right next to a weak one and splatter the weak signal.
Moc díky a 73 😉
Áno, máte pravdu. Teraz som si všimol, že nebola prepnutá WT anténa. Máte skvelý postreh, klobúk dolu! ;) Áno pri VHF/UHF to dovoľuje prepínať medzi WT a teleskop. 73
They really packed a lot into this radio. It's impressive. A question for you: Does it allow stepping in 5KHz steps in SSB mode? The VFO change muting is a "problem" with all of these new generation SSB radios, because of the IC they all use. But stepping in 5Khz jumps makes it less painful for signal hunting. (I can do this on my CountyComm GP7 which shares much of the same HF /SSB design.).
Yes, it does 5kHz step also 😉 Yes, those IC's are truly problem with mutes. But in the ATS receivers doesn't mutes. Different chip or they somehow obey this problem?
@@OM0ET The "high-end" (lol) Tecsuns do not use the internal VFO contained in the 473x chips but added their own VFO circuitry (with a number of other downsides coming with that). I believe the Sangean ATS 909... does not use a SiLabs radio-on-a-chip IC at all, or like aforementioned Tecsuns only parts of it. Also, the very old PL660/680 are conventional designs that do not use these particular chips at all.
It feels like this radio is having something of an identity crisis with the bass booster, aux in, and other stuff that feels inherently music-related. It looks great and it certainly seems more than capable, I just wonder how useful deep bass is when most of spoken voice is in the mid tones. Hell, most of music is in the mids, too, so it's not even very good even if it did want to cater to the music audience. Everything else seems capable, as I already said, that was just my immediate criticism.
Is there a great all around radio that does everything well. I mean am, fm, lw, wb, ab, cb, vhf, uhf, ssb, sw, ac, does great without getting lots of expensive, equipment or antennas etc. I wanna listen to everything around the planet, ham radio, radio stations etc. Thank you
That speaker grill... Jeeesh! It looks like a cheap 1970's radio. I'd love to see the inside of the radio because I bet it could be a lot smaller. It's not like OM0ET to not open it up, so I bet he was asked/told not to.
The tuning knobs look like deal breakers. They need to be mechanically solid and to use optical encoders. Also the sensitivity on SSB does not look good - 20μV compared to 0.20 μV on an IC-705.
Yep, me too. I was interested to find out if it would be easy to operate for blind ops, especially with the remote control from a smartphone, but the muting on tuning steps really is a deal breaker for me. I'm also a dial spinner and that would drive me to distraction.
the buttons all wiggle when you touch one , the dials are off balance and wiggle with slightest touch in the video... I cant buy this of those visuals alone.
Quite a good radio but dont think its worth the price point it currently sits at. There are other versions of this radio floating around with different badges. You tune to 624 khz is there a station there and not on 621khz or were you off-channel?
@@OM0ET If I understood that right it does only NFM in that band (actually in all bands above the air band), so that hardly qualifies as "satcom" RX, that frequency range is more or less just a gimmick with the only actual benefit being FM coms on 2/70.

@o00scorpion00o I get your point, and its valid. You do realise that you can bypass/ bridge out the DSP with old school style circuits, components, etc. Using Ardiuno or Pi, you could write a small bit of code that can be changed, updated at will in real time. DIY it man. Your Phone is full off DSP, in the RF RX & TX section, the Audio section, etc. You're demonizing a device you use every day. btw, I don't have a phone, nor computer, and never will.
@@snakezdewiggle6084 My phone works as intended, that's the difference, these DSP radios are just horrible on SSB. But for the rest, that's way above my head. I am more than happy with my trusty old Tecsun PL-680 and if it died tomorrow I would get a new one.
I agree . I hate dsp tuning . The only one I have is a pl330 and it drives me nuts . I normally use a Tecsun s2000 and 501x . The 501 works well but battery drain is insane . It spends more time charging than being used . The s2000 is not perfect but is an excellent all rounder and suits me fine .

Im wondering how this compares to a Degen De 1103 which has already great sensitivity and selectivity.
Thank you
Buy an internet "radio"
This just gave me an idea. It would be cool to have an RF box that's modular. Think like a modular synth. This is cool, but far too expensive for me.
No AM on UHF for military airband. That's bad.
Is there AM reception between 20 and 30 MHz?
Yes, there is a CB band range in AM demod.
That speaker grill... Jeeesh! It looks like a cheap 1970's radio. I'd love to see the inside of the radio because I bet it could be a lot smaller. It's not like OM0ET to not open it up, so I bet he was asked/told not to.
I agree . Looks like a cheap Hong Kong radio from the 70s . That horrible muting dsp tuning is a deal breaker also . I will stick to my Tecsun s2000 .
You are correct. I have seen the insides..... Terrible quality.
mw sw1 sw2 switch nearly falling apart already
Very nice
Jangkaunya berapa kilo meter..?? Mohon infonya bosss.??
Adding lug connections for a 12VDC external power source would be the only mod I'd make to improve its usefulness during a disaster.
hi paul does it feel cheap it does look good it reminds me of the SONY ICF5900W but more modern version
Hi. Not at all. It doesn't feel cheap. Nice features. Plenty antenna connectors. LPF, HPF, LNA... I would love if don't mutes every 1kHz step.
Mate, does it come with BT music geature, I.couldn't find thus info ??🎉 thanks for showing us another fantastic radio, that's dope
Yes, it is on the end of this video.
Nice Review. Thank you.!
That price, not so good.
The tuning knobs look like deal breakers. They need to be mechanically solid and to use optical encoders. Also the sensitivity on SSB does not look good - 20μV compared to 0.20 μV on an IC-705.
You know, I'd probably buy that if it didn't have the annoying cut-out as you tune around. I like to spin the dial.
Thumbs up for having a dial to spin! I like that too.
Yep, me too. I was interested to find out if it would be easy to operate for blind ops, especially with the remote control from a smartphone, but the muting on tuning steps really is a deal breaker for me. I'm also a dial spinner and that would drive me to distraction.
Apakah SSB" ini bisa di gunakan tanpa sambungan ke antena luar..?? Dan apakah SSB" ini bisa kami pesan
It'spitty that there is no IF shift, or BPF/BPT to get rid of other interfearing stations like you have on most of the ICOM radios.
😊
If it also had Internet streaming it would be the ultimate
the buttons all wiggle when you touch one , the dials are off balance and wiggle with slightest touch in the video... I cant buy this of those visuals alone.
Is it possible to program in Repeater Tones in this device.
I think no
@Lego-fs2de
Download the user manual - and read it.!
I would have liked a 9, 10, 16KHz bandwidth when you listening to a shortwave station with no interference.
Has 160 Meters?
Unfortunately no. 2.3MHz is the minimum frequency on SW. On MW I can't go higher than 1710kHz.
@@OM0ET In both of these matters Paul these shortcomings are very important for radio amateur's. When they build them, they should ask us SV2YJ
I agree 👍
@@OM0ET Oh wow, not that I care that much about 160m but this is kind of yet another letdown, also for yachters.
The body is plastic or metal ?
The 6KHz sounded good for shortwave but I would have like a 8 or 9 or even higher for nice sounding fidelity when there is no QRM
your video will be manual for this maker
Quite a good radio but dont think its worth the price point it currently sits at. There are other versions of this radio floating around with different badges. You tune to 624 khz is there a station there and not on 621khz or were you off-channel?
Im sorry but i got put off by seeing how flimsy the dial nobs are, not a quality build in my eyes.
Satcom receiver?
yes, also.
@@OM0ET If I understood that right it does only NFM in that band (actually in all bands above the air band), so that hardly qualifies as "satcom" RX, that frequency range is more or less just a gimmick with the only actual benefit being FM coms on 2/70.
@@gerdpfeil I have never heard anything else beside FM on satcom.
muito legal
Скажите пожалуйста сколько стоит радиоприёмник,?
$269.00 in Amazon.
'These Chinese ' are always finding legitimate reasons to be in my pockets . I want one

0о⁰... Мої вітання🎉 гарне радіо, давно вже на нього дивився!
Thank you 😉👍
I really hate the tuning mute but the poor audio quality on SSB and poor ECSS quality is a fundamental flaw in all these DSP radios/Chips and can not and has not yet been solved and one reason I have sold all but 1 of my DSP radios and do not ever intend to buy another.
@o00scorpion00o
I get your point, and its valid.
@@snakezdewiggle6084 Ah come on now, I just want a radio that performs like it should for the money out of the box.
Thankfully we can still get new, the wonderful Tecsun PL-680 which has wonderful SSB audio and ECSS performance.
@o00scorpion00o
I don't buy radios, I learned how to make them.!
This way, I can include the features I prefer...
My current portable is a hybrid, digital + analog.
AM, SSB, DSB, FM, NFM, FT8, etc. Cost less than 100.
