Having just completed this couple of helpful additions: The RAV4 2013-18 have different compressors/pulley depending on FWD/AWD and were manufactured, determine the model from the compressor or use your VIN to make sure you get the right part. I also recommend following the dealer directions and removing the front bumper and headlights (other videos about 14 clips/bolts) - it takes about 10 minutes and make the job easier. You must remove the radiator and condenser to get the compressor out/in, might as well have straight shot to the 4 corroded bolts on compressor and the connectors rather than reaching down from the top. Good luck - took me about 3 hours from start to finish.
Thanks for those tips. I replaced the fan rack not too long ago and did not remove the bumper. The plastic cover on top of radiators ripped out in the video brought that knowing smile to my face. I did notice on Rockauto and other places the references to AWD vs FWD (that I usually ignore) that I will be quite mindful of. To the OP though, Nice vid and details that I saw when changing fans. I like the pulling the small radiator hose to bleed off air when filling. Since the compressor is so noisy and intermittent I plan to replace the expansion valve/orifice and try to find a way to flush the system. I have read that failing compressors (granted conventional designs) send trash through the system as parts fail. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the link to the Clutchless Variable Displacement Compressor, it helped immensely in trouble shooting my 2018 Camry AC system and explained why I did not have a magnetic clutch relay in the relay box.
I have a 3rd generation Rav4 that is exhibiting the same symptoms yours is. It is not as frequent though. Eventually, it will probably get worse. Under the hood, I believe the 3rd and 4th generation are very similar. Thanks for your attention to detail in describing the issue in this video! I will refer to it when I eventually have to replace my compressor.
Great job, but there is a far easier way to remove the compressor. Just take the lower splash shield and the right side lower belt guard off and then slip it between the body and subframe at the belt area. No need to drain your antifreeze that way.
@@IvanRossS It’s not wrong doing it your way. Just a few unnecessary steps. Toyota’s service manual also doesn’t mention removing the coolant or radiator. But if you got it done and it’s working, that’s all that matters. Plus you freshened your coolant at the same time. 👍
Mechanic here if you have a compressor issue like a lock up or no engagement then you should consider replacing the entire AC system almost all shops won't warranty the job unless you do this same as parts warranty if you can't prove you put all new everything in the vehicle ac system and you have a new compressor fail and you did the job diy your parts retailer won't even warranty the parts. Because there is a huge chance there is trash in everything considering your compressor just stopped. It happened for a reason and if people did an annual ac performance check they could catch the issue before it fucks up everything.
2008 Rav4? You should have basic compressor. Look at it and see if clutch actually spinning when ac on "on" position. If not, could be just low freon. My video will not help you unfortunately. 2008 model totally different car. Compressor removal and replacement procedure totally different. But hope it will not get to it. But its possible, its 12 years old
Hi, I am having a serious AC problem of my Toyota Rav 4 2012 ltd. I bought it 2016 with very good condition from a Toyota dealer and last 4 years , there was no AC cooling problem . But since 2020 June, Ac was not making cool air except normal air. I refilled gas from mechanic and it was last 2/3 weeks and again normal air not cool. My mechanic checked it from underneath the car and found leakae in Ac line. He said that I need to replace the whole Ac line which cost 500 plus. What should I do now? is there any way to avoid this huge cost or contact with my Toyota dealer who usually charge costly price for any fixing? Thanks for your cooperation.
The reason why it cost so much because the line will cost you approximately $100 - $150 it's pretty hard to get to it too.. you have to remove a lot of stuff... so most of it it's your labor cost. then you have to refill your air conditioner ! So freon and labor for that too. If u go to dealership they probably going to charge you even more. I'll recommend you just to shop around and go to another place and you can point to them what exactly needs to be done and see how much they're going to charge you

Thanks for the video. I have a 2006 Rav4. Is the ac compressor similar to yours? I was trying to figure out if it had clutch but now I'm thinking it doesn't. I am noticing that low and high pressure gauges match with car running and ac on. Seems like it's not compressing.
If gauges on your low and high are matching , that's means compressor is not running at all.. don't forget to check your fuses and relay. There should be one wire goes to the compressor that wire control clutch. Put 12v on it and see if your compressor kicks in. If it kicks in please be careful, because you can over pressurize the system and it will blow up just keep watching the gauges highside cannot be reach over 300 psi.
total of how much oil needs to be in the entire AC system? 2018 Rav4. Haynes manual says that new compressor comes with 70 ml (2.37 oz). My condenser was wrecked and all the oil leaked out. not a single drop came out of compressor. So I added 70 ml in it, Haynes also said to add 40ml in Condenser if installing the new one. So I added another 40ml there, total now I have 110 ml in the system. have not added refrigerant yet, probably some 10-20 ml will be added from there if I use cans. Not sure if I overfilled with oil, what do you think?
Don't worry about it as long as you don't do not have a whole quart of oil in there. When I replaced my compressor with oil that came with. I never added. It's been over a year and system working just fine.

All rav4 are c clutch less compressors ! Don't buy one that with a clutch !!!!! Thats not a correct one ! That's why they cheaper. I bought mine one Amazon. Looks oem !! And only for $260. I think so I just got lucky to fine one so cheep. Still running strong!!!

Hello, I know this is an unusual question but I drive a 2013 Ford F-150 truck and it's AC has been really bad, so my question is, can I replace it with one from a Toyota? It doesn't matter which Toyota I just would like to know if there is any Toyota compressors of Toyota that is compatible with my F-150, the reason for me asking this is because there is no doubt that Japanese cars have the best car ACs and the top two are Toyota and Nissan but Toyota's ACs are colder though. If anyone knows please do let me know. The temperatures here have reached a whopping 65 degrees and that's in the living arwas, out in the desert and near the border it's even hotter, it gets so hot that both locals and foreigners at some point started making videos on RUclips of them actually frying eggs on the hood of their cars or on the tarmac, so this would make a huge difference for me, anyways any info or advice would be really great. Thanks.

@@IvanRossS I won't over pressurize since I'll be watching gauges, I just don't know which wire to use, the fuse box isn't very descriptive
