We are from north east Italy, which was once Austria, but identify ourselves as Canadian/American (USA). Any time I went back to visit it was mostly Germans and Austrians there, which is why to this day for some reason, I like them so much. Many Celtic/druidry remains are still there. The Gauls left there mark there. Some of our family live around the po valley, still, and also in friuli/Venezia Giulia. Their language (friulan) is not shared with the rest of Italy. It is entirely different and very difficult to understand.
I remember being taught in school that no one really knew why the Romans never bothered to so much as send a legion to Hibernia as far as anyone could tell - after seeing this intro, I think it's no mystery at all. Who would have dared?
It is taught that they didn’t bother because it was to cold which is bullshit They had already met the Gaels in Scotland and traded with Gaelic warriors in Britain and Scotland They were terrified of them Their was even Gaelic warriors used as bodyguards by the Egyptians . If they couldn’t take Scotland no way were they gonna try IRELAND THE LAND OF MAGIC
The Romans had been to Hibernia before, and every once in a while used it to base reserve troops, as they'd helped an Irish king retake his throne. Most writings describe the land as "not useful" and otherwise "deficient," much like Scotland was described. Essentially, Rome never conquered these places because they had no use to the Empire, and were more trouble than they were materially worth.

@star wars fan number 1902 The Lebor Gabála Érenn synchronizes Túathal's exile with the reign of the Roman Emperor Domitian (81-96), his return early in the reign of Hadrian (122-138), and his death in the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161). Roman and Romano-British artefacts have been found primarily in Leinster, notably a fortified site on the promontory of Drumanagh, fifteen miles north of Dublin, and burials on the nearby island of Lambay, both close to where Túathal is supposed to have landed, and other sites associated with Túathal such as Tara and Clogher.

I loved that Tolkien quote. It is a huge frustration that most pagan information on the internet about the celts or druids is full of fuzzy new age sentiment and usually reeks as strongly of hemp smoke as Stonehenge on a solstice day. We need facts not fantasy if we are to be taken seriously -even by ourselves. Thank you for putting these facts out there.

The Mabinogi texts on Branwen ferch Llŷr has an example of the cauldron of life you mentioned whilst discussing Gundestrup Cauldron. Also, Ynys Môn could well have been the centre of Celtic Druidry, many place-names are associated with Druids along with Tacitus Annals providing some good source material. Great video by the way really enjoyed it
I just finished a lecture series, the Celtic World, from the Great Courses. The lecturer argued that there were no Celtic people as such, that the art and culture simply spread across Europe. I was very disappointed to learn that there was no Celtic invasions. Even our ancient history is being warped. But now Sir Vive has cleared this up.
there was no distant celtic tribe, as compared to a norse tribe. Celtic was a linguistic group made of different tribes, fair skinned and very dark skinned. A little as now you could say english is no longer a tribe but anyone who speaks english is 'english'....so ....english people are danes (angles geats danes northmen etc etc little frisian too) whereas someone from mars would classify a billion english speakers as english. This is why in ireland you had very dark and very pale people but all speaking and living the celtic culture.
I met a Norwegian guy and a Belgian guy in Cambodia on a boat. All the same age, we were different in our modern cultures but the boat began to run aground due to lack of water in the river and too many people in the boat. The 3 of us, high on cambo weed and tipsy from yadong, pushed the boat 4 miles to deeper waters. We only met that day but were powerfully strong and familiar friends by the end of the trip.
@Nobody Nothing at this day and age reading about a people's history and culture can only tell you so much. You go to Dublin and you're in any other European capital just with an Irish twist. Go to Connaght and Munster and you'll encounter people who value their roots deeper than the superficial leprechauns plastered on shop windows for tourism.

And It took the Romans 200 years after the fall of Carthage and Hannibal to conquer and subdue the region. It wasn't easy for them. Yet we hardly hear about it.
Most of central and northern Spain was also fully Celtic at one point, and at least the northern half of Portugal was fully Celtic speaking until the early middle ages. Northern Italy was Celtic, as well as Hungary, Transylvania, Serbia and central Anatolia. Celtic Galatian warriors were employed as mercenaries in Seleucid and Ptolemaic armies and some were resettled as landed retired soldiers in Egypt and probably as far east as Afghanistan. Celts even settled in western Ukraine in a region which is also called Galicia. The Celts might have had settlements and certainly had trading posts along the Dniestr river and as far north as Lithuania for the lucrative amber trade. They also had trading posts on the Dniepr and Don and acted as trade mediums between the Scythians and the Hellenic and Roman world.
@Griffith Taka The Scythians were East Iranic peoples (who lived as far west as present-day Hungary). The Celts belong to a different branch of Indo-European, which also includes Italic and perhaps also the poorly attested Lusitanian, Venetic and Paleo-Balkanic languages.
@Griffith Taka the red hair in Ireland has nothing to do with Ireland being Celtic. The gene for red hair in Ireland predates the arrival of Celts from the continent.
harharhar got me roaring with laughter. where'd we come from, where we going. at first the historical truths seemed boring compared to the intro, and i thought perhaps there's more truth in the fantasy than the reality, but as the show went on a great story appeared, scholarly, and in chronological order and i really enjoyed the pictures of the artifacts. well done. is it fish and chips or spaghetti and pizza, that's the true question. thank yew have fun.

the introduction is indeed brilliant, so funny. like previous videos i really enjoyed your selection of music, it was really fitting and added much to the experience. i also liked two particular illustrations, the warrior chieftain surrounded by severed heads very powerful, especially the look which is so grim, and also the two celtic warriors in the chariot with the horses, very dramatic i think there was another illustration which was also very good. i too am familiar with the devizes museum, as you know, so i am familiar with the items which you showed here. i found the museum to be insightful with its ideas regarding historical pagan practice, which i hope are accurate i will add that caveat just in case, but they do provide a certain amount of evidence which people can see for themselves. i did also spend some time looking at the examples of coinage from the different tribes, and would note that chariots and horses appear on these. i am starting to appreciate your videos more as i start to watch more of them.

There's a fantastic museum in Cirencester and some of the artifacts made by the ancient Brits is some of the most intricate and fine I've ever seen. Truly incredible craftsmanship, from my perspective as a jeweller, it's mind boggling.
I will try to remember this. Thanks.
I’m close to Cirencester, do you know what it’s called
Is that the Corinium by any chance? Fantastic place! Agreed, superb craftsmanship
As a British "Celt" I can confirm I feel very at home in Central Europe. Especially Switzerland.
That intro is priceless. Had me in stitches! Greetings from Ireland! You could fit right in with the travellers with that skit!
I've been in some kind of love with the Gundestrup Cauldron since first seeing it, and as my family on both sides hail from northern Germany and Denmark (Jensen and Peterson surnames), I'm so happy to learn even a little bit more about it. Absolutely awesome!
Look at the Pashupati seal from the Indus valley. It looks almost identical to the Gundestrup cauldron too
Best intro to date, I don't mind telling you's
Lmao at the traveller callout parody.
It’s actually a hell of a lot less brutal than the real ones
as an American who has a lot of traveler genes i actually approve. pretty fucking funny and true i tell yas! my grandma was like this. smart as a whip but very animated in her speech... sadly people took her less seriously because of this... as for brutality ill be the first to admit, we have pretty bad tempers.
Thank you for producing these videos that never fail to be interesting, informative and often amusing. A real gem that shines out against the mostly incongruous backdrop of RUclips.
I think the most impressive part is how spot on the accent is. Well done.

I remember being taught in school that no one really knew why the Romans never bothered to so much as send a legion to Hibernia as far as anyone could tell - after seeing this intro, I think it's no mystery at all. Who would have dared?
It is taught that they didn’t bother because it was to cold which is bullshit
They had already met the Gaels in Scotland and traded with Gaelic warriors in Britain and Scotland
They were terrified of them
Their was even Gaelic warriors used as bodyguards by the Egyptians .
If they couldn’t take Scotland no way were they gonna try IRELAND
THE LAND OF MAGIC
The Romans had been to Hibernia before, and every once in a while used it to base reserve troops, as they'd helped an Irish king retake his throne.
Most writings describe the land as "not useful" and otherwise "deficient," much like Scotland was described. Essentially, Rome never conquered these places because they had no use to the Empire, and were more trouble than they were materially worth.
F U B A R methink none of the countries you’re talking about existed at the time. The English wouldn’t arrive on the Isles until like the 4th century bc
@star wars fan number 1902
That's a completely different event.
The Romans assisted the Irish king, Tuathal, reclaim his kingdom in Hibernia.
@star wars fan number 1902
The Lebor Gabála Érenn synchronizes Túathal's exile with the reign of the Roman Emperor Domitian (81-96), his return early in the reign of Hadrian (122-138), and his death in the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161).
Caratacus = Celtic hero.

Tom, for me this your best video yet. What can I say but thank you so much, I so appreciate all th work that you do. Blessings.

Hilarious intro made me spray my coffee. You actually did a decent impression of an Irish traveller accent - better than Brad Pitt in 'Snatch' anyway. Another fascinating and very professionally presented video, as I've come to expect from your channel. I am truly enjoying working my way through all of your excellent videos - many thanks, and keep them coming!

Ah, that’s what we call ‘Celtoscepticism’, a rather nasty infection in Celtic Studies atm.
It’s dying out.

there was no distant celtic tribe, as compared to a norse tribe.

There were celts in Galicia, Spain; aswell.
And It took the Romans 200 years after the fall of Carthage and Hannibal to conquer and subdue the region. It wasn't easy for them. Yet we hardly hear about it.
I always wondered that myself as my Spanish grand parents were native to Galicia before they moved to Zaragoza.
This video found me hanging on every word. This is the best video I’ve seen on the subject.
harharhar got me roaring with laughter. where'd we come from, where we going. at first the historical truths seemed boring compared to the intro, and i thought perhaps there's more truth in the fantasy than the reality, but as the show went on a great story appeared, scholarly, and in chronological order and i really enjoyed the pictures of the artifacts. well done. is it fish and chips or spaghetti and pizza, that's the true question. thank yew have fun.
Another excellent video. I especially like that you present very up to date academic findings, especially to do with DNA. DNA analysis is revolutionising our understanding of the ancient world and is able to help resolve many competing hypotheses such as the origin location of the Celts.

Heck. The Norse man Rollo given lord ship and Normandy became the backbone for ALL royal stock of modern Europe even to this very day the Queen of England included. Indo European ancestral roots spawned across the continent. We know a pre culture was wiped out before indo european's came and took what is today Europe, a interesting culture, ran by what we would call wise women all their culture centered around a Great Goddess being, these people of course were also at one time the invaders but such can be said about almost every nation in all history. Rome then controlled the area until 383AD when troops were pulled out to defend the mainland of the empire. They were never destroyed though. The Romans mixed with the Welsh, especially those of the Welsh aristocracy. Latin became the language of nobility until the army was pulled out when Brytonnic (ancestor language of Welsh) became the dominant language of the upper classes again.

Love it, Tom! Is that the same music at 5:15 as Bob Quinn's seminal Atlantean documentary?
the introduction is indeed brilliant, so funny. like previous videos i really enjoyed your selection of music, it was really fitting and added much to the experience. i also liked two particular illustrations, the warrior chieftain surrounded by severed heads very powerful, especially the look which is so grim, and also the two celtic warriors in the chariot with the horses, very dramatic i think there was another illustration which was also very good. i too am familiar with the devizes museum, as you know, so i am familiar with the items which you showed here. i found the museum to be insightful with its ideas regarding historical pagan practice, which i hope are accurate i will add that caveat just in case, but they do provide a certain amount of evidence which people can see for themselves. i did also spend some time looking at the examples of coinage from the different tribes, and would note that chariots and horses appear on these. i am starting to appreciate your videos more as i start to watch more of them.
