Not scientific, but definitely not pointless. These iPhone cameras are very similar, and anyway we’re looking at lens characteristics, not dynamic range, etc. Watch this 8+/6s comparison test if you’re interested ruclips.net/video/YTzLSDO2uys/видео.html
Well... Actually, these two camera’s video capabilities are extremely similar. But even if they weren’t... this is not a camera comparison or a dynamic range comparison or a low light comparison - all the things that would matter in that kind of test. This is a lens test and comparison. Flares, bokeh, and more. It’s about lens characteristics as this post and all the other ones clearly state. Since you didn’t watch... Spoiler alert: In the end they’re both solid choices. Really just depends on what ecosystem you want to buy into. Moment definitely has more lens options so in that respect it’s a more pragmatic choice.
Yeah with two different phones - it pretty much invalidates the whole test - how are we to decipher what is the result of the anamorphic lens and what is caused by different camera lenses and image processors in the phone (as an example, warm vs cooler colors) Yes, I caught that you said this wasn't meant to be a scientific test BUT, honestly, using the same two phones is such a basic control for any test, I'm a bit surprised you went forward with it. Still, I can see you've put a lot of work into producing this video so I am very appreciative of the effort even though I can't make any real world decisions based upon what I see here.
I agree Razeen - however you probably could find two videos here on youtube each one using the different anamorphic lenses but featuring the same phone and that would probably tell you more even though the images would obviously be different.
Not remotely. The video quality between these two phones is very similar, if not indistinguishable. 4K 24p in Filmic Pro. Plus we’re looking at lens characteristics, not dynamic range. White balance is not affected by camera sensors. And of course the 6s actually looks better in many of the setups.
True, the two different iPhone models I believe, have slightly different internal lens mechanism configurations, although glass elements and materials are about the same. Still, I think the difference in impact would be negligible in this case. In light of not having 2 identical and expensive iPhones handy, another method would have been to run the same test with each lens while swapping the phones with one another, just to confirm a baseline. Aside from that, I'm now leaning towards a Moondog purchase.
If anyone is interested, the Moondog range includes stand-alone clip-on options too. (No case or special attachments required). Not trying to push either, but I’ve been so happy with my Moondog lens (clip-on) for years on a 6s, that I wanted to pass on the info.
I am a anamorphic junky. I have anamorphic lenses for my DSLR/mirrorless cameras, and I also have all three versions of the Moondog Labs phone lenses (direct mount to iPhone 6 / 37mm for beastgrip / new 12.5mm for dedicated phone case). I can say that all three versions of the Moondog are identical in optical performance. I was interested in the Moment anamorphic but am glad you made this video. I know it’s subjective, but for me, the Moment looks terrible. The image is as you said too contrasty, and the flare looks artificial. It reminds me of my early experiments with using fishing line taped in front of a 50mm. The Moondog Labs lenses look very much like a real anamorphic lens. Compared to my SLR Magic anamorph, the Moondog Labs looks the closest. Meaning, it looks natural and less contrasty. It looks more cinematic to my eyes. So while the Moment is less expensive, I think the Moondog Labs lenses are worth the extra money. Now, regarding the moondog 12.5mm, I’m using it with the dedicated case on my iPhone X on a Zhiyun Smooth 4 with counter weights, as well as the Freefly Movi CR with dedicated counter weights. Both are additionally mounted to a 4th-axis handle mount. And it’s really incredible how we are now able to make cinematic projects with a phone. These are great times!
Thanks for the informative comment about the moondog lenses being similar in quality. I'm just getting into videography/learning about anamorphic lenses. In what circumstances would you choose to pick up the your phone, moondog and gimble rather than use your actual camera with slr magic anamorph?
For me the phone is the camera I always have with me. I walked across Spain and, while I thought I was going to bring my GH 5 and lenses, I ended up just bringing an iPhone XS. I was delighted with my choice. Since I was backpacking and walking 500 miles I would have been miserable with the extra weight. Plus my phone was always set up and ready. Sure there's a quality hit. But at least I got the shots.
The Color temperature of the Moment looked way better but I guess that’s easy to create in post. The contrast of the skin tones on the Moondog though definitely trumped the Moment. I know you can change that with color grading but it’s more work than temperature. That said, Moment looks less fiddly and easier to use which is why it would be my choice.
All valid points. 👍🏻 The Moment is a great choice. We’ll likely shoot a lot more anamorphic stuff now since it’s so easy to use. And, since we have all the other Moment lenses, too. Thanks for watching!
October 2020: I just got my Moment Anamorphic yesterday for $129.99. The case was $30, but I have two lenses (and will probably buy more), so the mobility and ease of detaching and attaching multiple lenses makes it really worth it.
Everything I've seen here only validates my thoughts on what I'd seen previously from the two lenses on youtube. I personally feel the cleaner look of the Moment lens is nicer. To me the look feels somehow more expensive, like they used a better lens coating to really bring out the flares and not cause the whole video to fuzz out when light is in the frame.
I’ve been shooting with the Moondog (stand-alone) clip-on lens for the iPhone 6s for a few years, and it’s been jaw dropping. I keep it in my pocket at all times. It’s easy and takes no time or effort to use. I also use the Moondog with an Osmo Mobile 2 when I’m doing something special, and I bought the Moondog counterweight for balance. The counterweight was expensive, and I was reluctant to purchase at first, but it’s so convenient (magnet-based design) that I’ve not regretted the purchase at all. Especially looking at these examples, I am very glad to have bought and used the Moondog. I’ve had tons of value over the years.
As I've revisited this video this afternoon, I'm reminded of a process we used in the days of film. You talked about the Moondog lens having less contrast compared to the Moment. I agree, the Moondog's contrast is preferable. When shooting on film, depending on the story and genre, we would "flash" the film to reduce its contrast. Normally, this was done prior to shooting and was preformed, preferably, by the same lab that would process the film and print the dailies. The Moondog is mimicking the flashed "look" very well. It's always easier to add contrast than it is to remove it.
Yes have heard of that process. Interesting stuff. And we’ve done several shoots since this and found that to be the case. It can be subtle, but the Moondog has a more natural, organic vibe. Actually planning to do another round of anamorphic comparisons as there are a lot of players in the market now!
I’ve been testing Moment Anamorphic Lens for a bit, and had a slight doubt about its lens flair despite good image quality. I think your comparison test just confirms that doubt. My guess is that Moment team hasn’t figured out the mass production of the coating yet(they looked better in the prototype testing footage). Anyway it’s a challenging process for the team and I’m happy with my lens. Kudos to you for another great video that’s both informative and helpful.
I love them both! I do like the purple hue on the Moondog. I did get over saturated blue on my Moment but cos I work in post as a career, it's no biggie and can be rectified. :)
One really important thing to point out here is that the Helium Core is only good for iPhones, Moment supports Samsung Galaxy and Note lines, and BeatGrip does supports basically any phone. As you said in the video, the Moodog lens will have to be set up on a rig, which increases the already higher cost. You can get the Moment lens + a case and still have money left over compared to the price of just the Moodog lens without the rig that it screws onto. I have this Moodog lens and aBeatGrip, and to tell you honestly it's in a drawer, because it is so cumbersome to set up each time. I also have Moment cases for all my phones and I truly love them, not just as a camera accessory but as a case too. I have all the Moment lenses apart from the Anamorphic and I use them every day for work. To me the Moment ecosystem is the clear winner! Oh yeah I have a Freefly Movi too and it's basically designed to work with Moment lenses.
Definitely true. We talk about this a lot actually... The idea that you need to make this kind of gear & setup easy to use as well as produce nice images. We use our Moment lenses more often than our other gear, too. It’s so convenient. Although we really like the Moondog and a Helium (and Beastgrip) combo. Thanks for sharing!
I feel you should do another comparison video where you try swapping the phone / lens combo. Especially the low light shots - I feel that iPhones get better year after year processing low light shots.
I see little PRACTICAL difference between the two. As far as price goes, the Moment lens has the advantage BUT that advantage is pretty much wiped out by the need for a special case and mount... so it's much like comparing half a dozen to six. Looks to me like EITHER lens would do an adequate job. Most people (not techies, I'm talking about average viewers here) would not notice any difference between the two. It's kind of like comparing shots made with a Canon and a Nikon. It's NOT the equipment so much as it is the SUBJECT (story, lighting, direction- all the creative parts) that's the FAR more important consideration. A Volkswagen beetle and a Cadillac Seville will BOTH get you to the same destination, a fact that many people seem to overlook.
Great comparison review, as usual! I've been debating to get one of these two lenses, so your timing is perfect. I've been really happy with my Moment wide angle, so am a little bummed that their Ana has more distortion than Moondog's. Agree with you on Moondog's image quality, based on your tests. Thanks for including info about overall user experience, form factor, ease of use, pricing, etc.! Incredibly helpful.
Anamorphics are usually used when you have a main subject up close with the background is further behind...so distortion will not ne so apparent...but I agree with you that too much of it is ugly....cheers Andre
I like the picture and flare of the Moondog better, but I'm sure this is just all preferences. Given the fact that the Moondog is on the iphone6s and I still like it better only means if it was on the iphone8plus, I would have no doubt hands down take the Moondog over the Moment.
People saying there huge improvements between the 6s and 8 Plus need to take a step back. For one, as stated in the video, it's not a scientific test. Secondly, the camera technology really didn't change too much between the cameras themselves. The megapixels and the f/stop are the same. The only thing that changed was how the phone was programmed to capture images so if to you use the same app, such as FILMiC Pro you'll get practically the same image.
Dylan i mistyped. The way the iphoneographers channel shot it was the same f-stop and the image was processed in the same way as each other (4k 24fps) through FILMiC Pro. So the images are going to be virtually indistinguishable. I appreciate the condescending tone though, how're those weekly videos coming along?
tydalwave it’s actually impossible to change the fstop via an app because its fixed, so if a phone has an f1.8 lens and the other has an f2.2, obviously the latter will have less light to work with, add in the size of the sensor and you’ve got two different cameras. Also color science is usually built in the ISP so the colors aswell will be different. So no, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. Ps. I know, most of the differences beetween the two external lenses were definitely beyond the variances in sensor/lens, but it’s just to be precise.
jody hinterleitner true it can't be changed legitimately as it would be on a DSLR but the apps simulate a fstop change, for depth of field purposes of course. But it's doable through software, albeit "fake."
A quick note regarding comments about the "cameras not being the same"... The video from these two phones is virtually indistinguishable. We wouldn't have done the test otherwise. They're both iPhones, not different brands. Both shooting 4K Filmic Pro. We've shot two different movies on these phones. We know them very well. Keep in mind we're testing the characteristics of a lens here, not dynamic range or that kind of thing (where newer sensors can make a difference). So, please don't start pixel peeping - that's not what we're looking at. Remember, camera tech changes all the time, but lenses can last forever. They will go from camera to camera to camera. If you watched our previous video with the Moment vs. Moment wide lenses we DID use the same camera and the Moment anamorphic lens is warmer (for those of you curious about that) compared to the stock iPhone lens or other Moment lenses. These tests are not scientific - you should look at as many test videos that you can find and make your own conclusions - but our tests are a valid comparison with the caveats we mention. Btw, we might post a short follow-up video with some more comparison footage that was all shot on the same phone just to show that look. :) Hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching! UPDATE: For those interested we did a follow-up/response video comparing the iPhone 8 Plus and 6s... ruclips.net/video/YTzLSDO2uys/видео.html
I have both iphone 6s and 8 plus and I can see a lot more contrast and sharpness on iphone 8 plus, 6s is a lot softer. This comparison is just for confusing people.
These phones camera sensors are worlds apart. There is a huge difference. Not to mention the software features enabled on the iPhone 8 that are not on the iPhone 6. This is just a lazy test.
iPhoneographers Yeah, I was hoping the choice of phone wasn’t so different. The 6s and 8 Plus have different apertures and lens elements. Ultimately, the sensor may have an impact on the image quality. I would prefer to see it tested on a similar generation of sensor, or at least on the same phone so as to rule out the phone as the one causing all the contrast issues and the variations in the look and feel.
Man this is a really really biased review. How can you say that there is no difference between iPhone 6 and 8. Two years of difference is like an era in technology. Less contrast in the Moondog is not because of the lens but because of the inferior iPhone 6s. I'm really annoyed by this video. All the purpose of an anamorphic lens is to get beautiful lens flares and you prefer the muted flares of the Moondog? huh. go get some life. you are not good here.
Alright since moondog was made by ex zeiss and Kodak optical engineers, I think your experiment proved that even that being used in IP6 was better than moment on IP8
thank you for this comparison and the work involved in it. Side note: there are slim iPhone cases that allow the use of the Moondoglabs with smartphone Gimballs. They cost a few bucks on Ebay. You just have to screw the Moondog Anamprphic on it. It also allows precise rotation of the lens hence accurate anamorphic.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and sharing that Moondog info. Have to check that out. 👍🏻 We’re going to get the new version to try out also that has the 12.5mm case mount, similar to the Moment.
Thanks for all the work making this test. IMHO, the difference between the cameras is almost irrelevant, since this is about the nature of lenses, and the comparisons are fine for evaluating that. I give the Moondog a slight edge based on the nature of the flares, but I like the greater contrast in the Moment. For ease of use and cost the Moment wins for me since the two lenses are so similar. I do wish you had shot some gimbal footage since that is my major reason for buying an anamorphic lens. Thanks again.
We’re going to shoot some anamorphic gimbal stuff with the Moment. We’ve shot some on the Moondog already as we showed. We’ll post something in a future video. And you’re correct on the cameras. We are looking at lens characteristics. Plus, the cameras are extremely similar despite what some are saying. Thanks for watching and your feedback!
Great review, and I have to agree, that although they are both great lenses, the Moondog looks more organic. I think the phone will make a difference too. If you was to shoot both lens on the same phone model, you will probably see even better results. I wonder how or when Beastgrip releases their anamorphic lens, how much different that one will make. Thanks for a great comparison.
Maybe I'm missing something, or perhaps the Moondog wasn't cleaned first, but the image always looks smudgy to me here, especially in comparison. It's pretty distracting for me, so I would have to vote for the Moment in this case. However, I would be ecstatic to have either!
They’re both very nice. 👍🏻 Can’t go wrong with either. Smudges... Might be YT compression? We cleaned the lens although fingerprints can and do happen!
Only the first scene before the Marvel logo in Guardians of the Galaxy was shot with anamorphic lenses. All the anamorphic lens flares in both Guardians movies where added in post.
Any chance of getting more involved depth of field bokeh footage? Not many people are demonstrating this aspect in their videos. Anyway, thanks for making this comparo - much appreciated.
Excellent review, really top notch production 👍 I appreciate the time it took you to put all that together. I never used anamorphic lenses yet and after some quick research h I was leaning towards moment for ease of use on my xs Max. You brought up a great point about contrast and how it makes faces and skin tones look more pleasing. I guess I could adjust contrast in post altho the better it is out of camera the less work later. I will keep that in mind, thanks! 👏
I somewhat felt it should have been the same phone. I feel that white balance shift is due to different phones. But anyways lots of details, tips in the video. Keep making!
Thanks for watching! We did a previous video comparing all the Moment lenses (Moment vs. Moment) and the anamorphic definitely has a warmer look. We also did a video showing how the 8 Plus and 6s are very similar. Same sensor size, etc. So while not a scientific test - the findings are solid, albeit not perfect. Btw, we will be doing more testing in the future against other anamorphic lenses and phone models, too.
Why go to the trouble and expense of using an anamorphic lens, which can twist and warp the image, when you could use a wide-angle adapter, and crop the top and bottom for the anamorphic aspect ratio? In either situation, you’re getting the full horizontal resolution of the camera, and software is throwing away the top and bottom to give you the wide/short aspect ratio.
Actually shooting anamorphic there is no crop. You get the entire 2.39:1 widescreen image. If you shoot 16x9 you do have to crop the top and bottom and/or letterbox to get the same aspect ratio (and thus lose resolution). Here’s a video we did on this topic... ruclips.net/video/IZR3cvCjQ2k/видео.html
I'm watching this after already having bought the moment anamorphic lens. I like the more natural look of the moondog. But ultimately, I don't think it makes too much of a difference for me right now. Maybe later I'll invest in a beastgrip rig, but for now, moment's snap on snap off lenses with phone gimbal works for me.
Thanks for a great comparison. I enjoy my moondog but the one knock I have about the slip on model is there is no access to the rear elements and so dust can go in and there is no way to get it out. This is probably not an issue with the threaded models. I don't see dust in my images yet but that's just me. The slip on's also do add to the "get up and go" factor though and is no problem with my older zhiyun smooth 3 gimbal.
Gerald Deus - Moondog make a whole range of clip-on lenses too. Nothing simpler; no case, just slip on, slip off. I never leave the house without it in my pocket.
rootytuners $175.00 is a lot of money to spend and it not be a universal system. I would rather wait on beastgrip anamorphic lens I could use on any iphone
Gerald Deus - that’s a very fair concern, and one I shared before buying. It will be decision again for me when I upgrade my phone. You are totally locked to a specific iPhone version with the Moondog clip-on variety. Just wanted to point out it was an option (that wasn’t apparent in the review).
rootytuners it’s one of the reasons I went with the beastgrip rig system. Didn’t want to be locked into a sustem. I’m waiting on my moment anamorphic right now. And eventually getting the beastgrip anamorphic
I have the Moondog lens with the built in clamp (iPhone 6S Plus) so no need for any special cases, I bring it with me snap it on and ready to shoot. Even if you're using different phones the Moondog lens to me beat out the Moment in every category which was on a better device with better dynamic range. There is a slight price difference but when you're buying this niche product I don't think you'll be thinking about the difference in price considering you probably want the best results you can get.
The Moment lens coating is warmer, even compared to their other lenses. We learned that in this video... Moment vs. Moment | How does the ANAMORPHIC lens compare? ruclips.net/video/9XL1nCYrKXg/видео.html
The Moondog labs 12.5mm has an updated design that has a different more anamorphic looking bokeh. I think the skin tone comparison is pretty useless considering the color science between the 6s and the 8 is different. Different NDs also effect color.
The Moment lens does have a warm cast to it. We’ve tested and shown this in numerous videos. The coating on the Moondog is more neutral. Whichever one people prefer is subjective of course.
I’m not sure if the question is asked before. My mobile Samsung got a close column of 3 small lenses. Which lens should I plug into? Is it possible at all without damaging the other lenses?
Typically you use the standard wide lens. But remember you need a bayonet case for the Moment lens to work. And this Moondog lens you need a rig with a 37mm mount like a Beastgrip.
I was really looking forward to footage that would more readily demonstrate the capabilities of these lens, from a more cinematic perspective, i.e. focus pulls, bokeh with lights instead of heavy details like leaves? Yes, you demonstrated the light flares, skin tones, and such, but when shooting a closeup or even a medium closeup, anamorphic really shines, and it would've been nice to see that in a non-studio setting? Just my two cents.
Looking at this vid mainly since my moment Anamorphic is arriving today. The Moondog has slightly better characteristics but I factor that because of the fact that Moondog is leaning more towards the vintage look when it comes to their lenses. A shame, since they don't support beyond iPhones and I'm not a fan of the clip-on style lens. Moment seems to be a bit more "artificial" but I factor that with them going for the more modern Anamorphic look than anything else. Could also be some slight defects in the coating of the glass but only way to really test that is by using the same device for both lens comparisons, which doesn't seem to be the point of this video anyways. All I can conclude is that both lenses are great and pretty much come down to which look you prefer and more importantly, compatibility.
I can use a 37mm lens clip on the Moondog on my LG v50. There is no case that works for the Moment lens and the LG v50. Moment is supporting the Pixel and a Samsung device, but the best Android for video is an LG with built in manual controls and HDR10.
Nice unscientific comparison. 😉👍 Based on all the hype and test videos promoting Moment anamorphic I was expecting it to blow Moondog with the lens flares. They both flared similar aside for color hue & density. I wanted more flaring on my Moondog thus also ordered a Moment to fulfill my flared addiction. 😁 I'll judge for myself when I receive the Moment. Thanks for the video. 👍
Great test, I prefer the look of the moondog, agree on some of these shots the moment does look a little “plugin”, I don’t think it’s down to the phones being different and I’m not a fan of that baked on warm characteristic of that lens, I own all of the moment lenses except their anamorphic and love them all, great Conpany moment is, but I think I’ll order this new moondog. Great channel you have here and love your short Miranda, your videos here are fantastic!
Thanks! We like both lenses TBH, but do think the Moondog has a more organic & natural look. Actually got the new 12.5mm case mount one recently, too. We shot a lot of “Miranda” on the Moondog.
Have you tried the Moondog Anamorphic with an iPhone 14 Pro Max yet? Any vignetting issues on the extreme edges? I've heard the Moment lens has that issue.
@@iphoneographers Forgot to mention I also added the 52 mm adapter. Just started using the Beastgrip Pro and I like it as well. Got a confirmation that all has left the building at Moondog Labs 👌
Good call! 🙌🏻 ND is very important and it works well with the mount. Just make sure everything is aligned before you shoot. It can sometimes shift and the image can skew.
Hi. Great comparison. Thanks. I just got my Moment anamorphic and not overly excited about the amount of distortion. You mention you’ll be doing a vid on some distortion workarounds in this vid here - would be awesome to hear your suggestions for ironing out distortion on these type of lenses soon!
Thanks! We haven’t made that video yet on distortion, but we have talked about it more in a few other videos. We will make that though. But easiest way is to shoot with the second camera / telephoto lens. So just put the Moment on that mount. Then you’re shooting past a lot of it and still getting anamorphic.
The colours of the moment seem completely off to me. Not even close to natural. You talked about “warmer” colours but they’re not a little bit warmer, they look like they have a very strong filter?
I think if you shoot in slog or a neutral picture profile you'll be able to color grade to your liking in post. I was originally looking at these two lenses as well but the mounting system for the Moondogs lens seems too cumbersome/large. the moment lens case feels more or less like a normal iPhone case when you don't have the lens on so just based on that I'm going with the moment lens.
Yes, indeed, it WAS helpful and informative and also very pleasant to listen to and well-presented overall. Helped me with my buying decision, too, so thank you very much. I am just a naive beginner, but someday I would be interested in your views on shooting with a wide lens (they cost less) in the cinematic aspect ratio. I did this while shooting a music rehearsal - have always loved ultrawide lenses for close-in shooting to catch the environment as well as the foreground subject(s). Looks good to me. I shot in 1080p, 24fps, and 1/48 on an iPhone SE with Freefly Movi Cinema Robot handheld. Are there clear advantages to a true anamorphic lens, beyond beautiful flare? I'm guessing it would be better to shoot in 4K and process in a 1080p timeline? Thanks again.
Moment makes no proprietary case for the LG v50 ThinQ so that makes the Made in New York or at least designed in New York Moondog the winner. I can get a Beast Grip to work for Moondog I can also get a 37mm lens filter clip to work for it on my Zhiyun Smooth-Q if I add a counterweight, so there you go.
I just ordered the moment lens yesterday. And only yesterday that moondog labs announced the anamorphic with bayonet mount that can be used on cases such as rhino shield, sirui and moment cases.
Pls make a comparative review on Moment vs Kapkur vs Ulanzi Anamorphic lenses as well. Prices vary a lot and I don’t know much details in the materials used on the kapkur and ulanzi. Thank you.
iPhoneographers thank you. It’s gonna help a lot of aspiring mobile videographers who are on a budget. Keep up the good work! :) I love watching your uploads.
Have you got the 12.5 mm? I can not find any comparisons to the standard version of Moondog and have no idea if the newer one is the same quality (flares, distortion etc.) Thanks!
We actually just got one recently. Have not tested it yet though, but we are planning to soon and we’ll put out a new video and a follow-up comparison!
Bro you spent hours doing this tough job...hats off to you...the only thing stopping your review to be considered "scientific " is to get another phone of the same make/version... that'd shut'em naysayers n cynics💪🤝👏👍👍🙏💖
Definitely gave me some education on that one, thanks! QUESTION: What filter type of filter should I use on an iphone to prevent that green dot lens flare if I am filming a sunset for example? Just something simple and affordable?
12.5mm is similar to the way Moment lenses work. They mount on a RhinoShield case. The 37mm is screw on mount that attaches to things like a Beastgrip or Helium Core cage.
We’ve tried to get a Beastgrip anamorphic lens for a while and they just aren’t available. And we are looking at the Kapkur for a review too in the future. So this will potentially happen one day. :)
So did you ever do a comparison where you swapped the lenses to the other phone to see if the contrast and warmth differences were the lenses or the phone sensors?? If not then I’ll just ignore those observations as I don’t know if then results are attributable to the lens or phone, but I will take in the comparison of the definite lens characteristics (distortion, etc).
Yes we’ve actually seen the warmth and showed this in several other videos. In some of the comparisons here the WB did play a role, but the Moment lens is warmer (and actually warmer than all their other lenses - guessing its the coating to create the blue flares).
@@iphoneographers Ok, then I wouldn't call it "warmth", I'd call it a discoloration. "Warmth" implies something good or desired, but for those of us who shoot in Log, for example, that coloration would not be at all desirable. I'm VERY glad I found this video. I ordered a Moondog Labs lens because of this comparison. Thanks for doing it.
Well, warmth is actually the correct way to say that. We’re talking about color temperature, so it’s typically either warm or cold (tungsten or daylight), but we get what you’re saying. :) The Moondog is a great lens. Hope you like it!
they are both great lenses that will take mobile videos to a next level thanks for the tests (universal lenses are always the best.. i will keep my moondog for now)
Moments lens Flares are razor-sharp, like a cut in the image/pixels, looks really like a mistake hapenned in the clip--- absolutely horrible!..wow!... the moondoglab-lens flares are not as hard edged at all, and look smoother..they simply work!.... also i see Moments lens edges of Frame are soft and blurry and the moondog one is sharp to each edge and corner of the frames. i guess this is what i expected from the beginning: Moondog labs guys are ex Zeiss and Kodak optical engineers, who have been desiging lenses for the Worl leading Lens companies, and bring that to the table here. Whereas MOMENT group is a mere bunch of skateboarders who hire some chinese peopel in China to make a bad clone of a moondoglens. Cant wait to see more oft those comparrisons by other people like Tito Ferradans.
I feel this comparison is pointless with different phones.
Not scientific, but definitely not pointless. These iPhone cameras are very similar, and anyway we’re looking at lens characteristics, not dynamic range, etc. Watch this 8+/6s comparison test if you’re interested ruclips.net/video/YTzLSDO2uys/видео.html
@@iphoneographers fair enough point. Thanks for the video
it's the reason i disliked the video, i didn't even bother watching the whole thing, it is pointless, the cameras ARE NOT SIMILAR AT ALL!!

Steve Crow still nice seeing the different images though!
I agree Razeen - however you probably could find two videos here on youtube each one using the different anamorphic lenses but featuring the same phone and that would probably tell you more even though the images would obviously be different.
Steve Crow good point
I agree 100%. The moondog lens is better imo.
Thanks for watching!
how about ulanzi anamorphic lens iam still confuse abut 2 of them moment and ulanzi
@@iphoneographers I'll be looking forward to that. Your efforts in these regards are truly appreciated!
Thanks for this! I'm enjoying using the Moondog lens myself.
Thanks for sharing!
you cant skip 2 generations of smartphone camera technology and use such old devices to compare.
moondog wins..not happy that you used different phones because iphone 8 is far better than 7 and 6 have no comparison
I feel you should do another comparison video where you try swapping the phone / lens combo. Especially the low light shots - I feel that iPhones get better year after year processing low light shots.
We plan to do more once we get our iPhone XS. And other lenses like from Beastgrip and Kapkur. Thanks for watching!
They are both good options. Comes down to a personal preference. You make some good points. Thanks for watching and your comment.
That was great, thank you. I was about to buy the moment 'cause of it's quick-snap ability but the image qualities of the Moondog look far superior.
Moment = Modern Anamorphics
Moondog = Classic Anamorphics
Moondog looks more clear and organic and has better artifacts.
Anamorphics are usually used when you have a main subject up close with the background is further behind...so distortion will not ne so apparent...but I agree with you that too much of it is ugly....cheers
Andre
Will the 12.5mm one have the stretched bokeh? It seems to have the shape of the oval bokeh and the others don't.
The only thing that changed was how the phone was programmed to capture images so if to you use the same app, such as FILMiC Pro you'll get practically the same image.
tydalwave the same f stop? F/2.2 is the same as F/1.8? And a 1/ 3.2 sensor in the 6s is the same sizes as the 1/ 2.3 on the 8 Plus?
Dylan i mistyped. The way the iphoneographers channel shot it was the same f-stop and the image was processed in the same way as each other (4k 24fps) through FILMiC Pro. So the images are going to be virtually indistinguishable. I appreciate the condescending tone though, how're those weekly videos coming along?
dont be a prick, you worded it wrong, just admit it and move on, negative energy helps no one
tydalwave it’s actually impossible to change the fstop via an app because its fixed, so if a phone has an f1.8 lens and the other has an f2.2, obviously the latter will have less light to work with, add in the size of the sensor and you’ve got two different cameras.
You should need to know definition of comparison first
correct
I think you should know the definition of politeness first.
I think you need to know the diffrence between "This is NOT a scientific test" and "comparison"
You should learn how to not be a dipshit, prick.
But Moment is my favorite tho
Both look very similar and good but I think the winner is very clearly demonstrated right in these: 8:53 or 10:27
My long wait has ended. Thanks iphoneographers for this shootout. Keep it up!
@@Tadwilla he's biased man... don't listen to him
Alright since moondog was made by ex zeiss and Kodak optical engineers, I think your experiment proved that even that being used in IP6 was better than moment on IP8
They definitely have that going for them. Solid optical backgrounds.
thank you for this comparison and the work involved in it.
New side by side comparaison between Mondog and Moment ? (With the same smartphone please !). Thanks
With so many instances where you forgot something or had to compensate for something in post, why not just reshoot the take and keep it objective?
Great review, and I have to agree, that although they are both great lenses, the Moondog looks more organic. I think the phone will make a difference too. If you was to shoot both lens on the same phone model, you will probably see even better results. I wonder how or when Beastgrip releases their anamorphic lens, how much different that one will make. Thanks for a great comparison.
I wish the sharp blue line from the flair wasn't so prominent. I really hope the Sandmarc variant helps tone that down
Sandmarc flares appear to be less pronounced in the samples we’ve seen so far.
iPhoneographers hopefully that's a good thing! Because 90% of it I love, it's just the blue line seems to be too much
Maybe I'm missing something, or perhaps the Moondog wasn't cleaned first, but the image always looks smudgy to me here, especially in comparison.
Actually yes! We’re working on one looking specifically at that aspect. 👍🏻
Need to use the same phone on both..
This is not a good review because you didn’t use the same phone 🤦🏽♀️6 and 8 are 2 years differently
Did nobody have the chance to test the Moondog clamp-on? Any feedback or comparison? Thanks
I prefer the flare on the Moonlight
Review on point, no stone unturned.
@@iphoneographers sure i will do checkout other videos. Thanks for the reply😊
Moment looks kinda sharper than the Moondog labs lens.
I wasn't expecting that. The Moondog looks better in almost every shot.
Thanks for this. Prob going to skip out on moondog and wait on the beastgrip version. Beastgrip and moment seem like the simpler system to me.
We wanted to include the Beastgrip lens here but couldn’t get one! We hope to do a video with one soon though. Thanks for watching!
Moondog the first and only !
Yeah the clip on are convenient! We just got a 12.5mm case mount and will be shooting more stuff soon. Thanks for watching.
iPhoneographers any updates with 12.5 mm version? :)
We’re actually working on a follow up video! Will be releasing it soon-ish. :)
Colour and temperature is clearly affected more by the sensor/phone than the lens...
The Moment lens coating is warmer, even compared to their other lenses. We learned that in this video... Moment vs. Moment | How does the ANAMORPHIC lens compare? ruclips.net/video/9XL1nCYrKXg/видео.html
As a moment lens user I don’t want to say, but actually moondog is winning, a lot.
I would choose moment for day shooting because of it’s colors, but moondog flares are much, much better!
Very great comparison. But I have to definitely go with the Moment lenses.
The Moondog labs 12.5mm has an updated design that has a different more anamorphic looking bokeh. I think the skin tone comparison is pretty useless considering the color science between the 6s and the 8 is different. Different NDs also effect color.
The colour difference is because of different camera sensor and different approaches by their software
I think I generally like the Moondog better but really either one would be a great choice.
Based on all the hype and test videos promoting Moment anamorphic I was expecting it to blow Moondog with the lens flares. They both flared similar aside for color hue & density.
I wanted more flaring on my Moondog thus also ordered a Moment to fulfill my flared addiction. 😁 I'll judge for myself when I receive the Moment. Thanks for the video. 👍
it's not the lens that's changing colors or HDR, it's literally the difference in camera sensors, it's different phone generations
Interested to see how the moondog would work on a Pixel 2
Or a pixel 4
How is that fare when you put the moment lens on a better phone?????
The lens
Anamorphic moment, Lans don’t fit my iPhone 14pro max did with all my others
Moondog looks very natural and organic
Not yet, but will be doing that soon. So far most lenses have a little bit of weirdness on the edges I’ve found.
Why is there a blue dot in the shot?
I have the moondog lab one and it's a wonderfull lens, just amazing images comes out of it.
Thanks for the comparison!
Watching your video I just ordered the Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. Got already a Beastgrip Pro so this will be an awesome combo 👌
Nice! That’s a great pairing. We use a Beastgrip too. Like it a lot. 👍🏻
@@iphoneographers Thanks for the tip ! All is shipped. I'll keep you posted
@@iphoneographers All arrived this morning. Love the Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. Now my ND filters 👍
Thanks!!
Can it mount on huawei mate 20pro or samsung devices ? Why almost all review shoot with iphone ?
Moment sells cases for several Samsung phones, also Google Pixel and iPhone. We shoot on iPhone and so that’s what we use on our channel.
The colours of the moment seem completely off to me. Not even close to natural. You talked about “warmer” colours but they’re not a little bit warmer, they look like they have a very strong filter?
In our testing it is slightly warmer. One or two shots here were much warmer, but it was a combination of the lens and white balance/ND filter.
Yeah the Beastgrip setup can make the gear more of a universal setup!
Great review, very extensive and detailed.
I just ordered the moment lens yesterday. And only yesterday that moondog labs announced the anamorphic with bayonet mount that can be used on cases such as rhino shield, sirui and moment cases.
All solid options! Happy Moondog did that though as it will be easier to use for run & gun setups versus using a cage.
Pls make a comparative review on Moment vs Kapkur vs Ulanzi Anamorphic lenses as well.
Prices vary a lot and I don’t know much details in the materials used on the kapkur and ulanzi.
Thank you.
We’re actually looking into doing something like that soon. Thanks for the suggestion!
iPhoneographers thank you.
Thanks for the test.
Definitely gave me some education on that one, thanks! QUESTION: What filter type of filter should I use on an iphone to prevent that green dot lens flare if I am filming a sunset for example? Just something simple and affordable?
Can we blur back ground while taking video
Yes by getting close to the subject. Easier to do using a Tele lens though than the anamorphic as it’s pretty wide.
what is the difference between 12.5mm and 37mm thread?
12.5mm is similar to the way Moment lenses work. They mount on a RhinoShield case. The 37mm is screw on mount that attaches to things like a Beastgrip or Helium Core cage.
@@iphoneographers I see, I thought that it might have something to do with the video aspect or something like that. Thank you for the answer!
Seems like the field of view might be a little wider on the moment lenses
What ways are around it for the distortion ? any links on that ?
Use the telephoto lens is really the main way.
Which is better? For iPhone X
Really a subjective call, but Moment is probably easier to use with their cases.
would love to see Moondog vs Moment vs Beastgrip vs Kapkur anamorphic adapters.
@@iphoneographers Let's meet in the middle and say it's a "warm discoloration", LOL.
they are both great lenses that will take mobile videos to a next level thanks for the tests (universal lenses are always the best.. i will keep my moondog for now)
Is there a an adapter for android phones for moondog? I was going to get the moment lens but I'm not liking the yellow tint it gives
Does flare change color if the light source (neon light) change??
Cant wait to see more oft those comparrisons by other people like Tito Ferradans.
judgey, judgey...
The anamporphic lens flares in the video examples are added in post as cgi.
You can achieve similar looks in post, but these are from the anamorphic lenses in camera.
