I have the ulanzi and I really enjoy using it. I’m also very excited at the fact that there will soon be a 1.55x lens which means all the other companies will come out with their versions of that too. I’ve seen tests of the prototype version on RUclips and it looks great.
I just got my new iPhone 12 pro max and it's just so frustrating researching for information regarding compatibility of these products. You would think that lenses are the hardest to understand but it's not. Thanks for your great review! Mounting these products is the most frustrating. It would be great to create a video on "All you need to know mounting these lenses on an iPhone 12 pro max" including gimbals, cages, proprietary cases and which mounting system fits the most. Thanks!
I know what you mean by the build of these phone anamorphics. I have a used Beastgrip 1.33x that I picked up for cheap on eBay and when I got it, I noticed that it was just dirty so I tried to clean it. Eventually, I had to take it apart because the Q-tip polishing actually pushed the rear element into the lens! I found out that the lens was held together by sticky glue and the interior was lined with felt of all things. Needless to say, simply by cleaning the lens, the felt started falling apart so there were fuzzy hairs everywhere. After letting things dry a bit, I was able to clean all the surfaces, revealing coating and glass damage from the previous owner. Just by moving the front element to clean, the inner corner on one side of the glass completely chipped off! Thankfully it wouldn’t affect anything and I painted it over with black Sharpie but it tells you how fragile the glass is. Without applying more sticky glue or perhaps double sided tape, the lens won’t stay 100% together as tightly as it should but I was at least able to push the rear element back into place and clean the front element overall. The lens turned out to not have very pretty or anamorphic-like flares anyway but it at least was a learning experience. Since then, I found a good deal on a Moondog Labs 37mm model and it’s much better optically but I wonder if it’s built the same. Overall, like anything camera related, you’ve got to be careful with these things. Also, if you need an easy way to carry your phone lenses, a pack of microfiber sunglass pouches should do the trick and $10 can get you a pack of 100 or something like that so you would be covered for a long time! Btw, I’ll be doing a video on my anamorphic lenses once we’re done with our feature film. Keep up the good work, Tito! :)
Tito, I have Kapkur anamorphic lens. It is NOT LOCKED, it can be rotated to any angle, AND it snaps in to 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees (exact vertical/horizontal) positions.
i use the ulanzi ver2 it has a 17mm but use a 37mm adapter to mount it to the 37mm front plate mount of my sony rx0ii works really well and close focus is 20cm . an anamorphot 60 on my xh1 achieves everything else
I am just looking at an anamorphic lens for my iPhone XR. Must say, your review, by far, is the best review that I have seen in making my decision to purchase a particular brand for my current amateur status. Thanks a heap and keep up the good work. Cheers, and stay safe.
I was somewhat a very casual video snapper but ever since the introduction of these lenses, I fine myself fully committed shooting occasionally with a smartphone, they just add another layer of excitement & professionalism on a budget as oppose to that flat looking cellphone footage.
For me, ulanzi is the winner, just because is at 50 usd with shipping and the phone case... For me to get for example a Moment lens with case, would be like 220 usd with shipping and import fees... It's interesting that even thought you pay more, there is not much of a difference in the lenses, also the accessories that are available only in some of them makes them hard to sell to newbies.
Thanks for making an objective comparison of these lenses. I haven’t risked the expense to try anamorphic lenses. None that I’ve seen have a reliable mounting system. I use an iPhone 6s and an iPhone 8 with Filmic Pro and no one sells a mounting case for either phone.
The Sirui offers the most. As to the others, it's like they also try to create a specific type of flare. If your lens is going to flare at all, you want it to be a natural product of the glass (I am not sure any of these lenses are made out of glass, a lot of cheaper lenses are made out of plastic). I mean, an anamorphic is about as far as I would go with a phone, and that's only so it could be used for wider establishing shots. I think there is a limitation of form factor. Getting a nice case such as the Small Rig ones for iPhones is where it's at and then getting handles for further stablisation beyond what is offered by Filmic is where it is at.
Moondog 37mm version with variable ND is great - survived a couple of knocks and falls in the last 3+ years of use. I like the Moment offerings too, their cases are relatively cheap. A 2x version is probably pushing it but it is great to see some options besides Moondog Labs.
This was an outstanding job. I learned a few things. I tested the very first Moondog labs anamorphic. It was excellent, but only fit one model of iphone, so now it is a brick…so sad.

Did you notice anything about this newer ulanzi mount being fragile? I bought the $30 first generation last year and it broke within a couple weeks. The lens just popped right off the mount. Its a shame, I had a lot of fun using it for a little while. I want to get another lens with a really solid mount. This video may just have helped me with that! Keep up with the good content!
@@AnamorphicOnABudget It just looks like the completely redesigned the mount for the second generation. Maybe thats why they sold the 1st version so cheap. Which would you say has the best solid locking mount, the Sirui or the Moment lens?
Hello , I hope you are very well, two questions, 1st do you have a tutorial in Spanish ;: 2nd the Ulanzi DOF Adapter, they no longer sell it? Have they stopped making them? What alternative is there to mount Sony Lexia cinema lenses on an iPhone 12 pro max? Thank you very much, greetings, your explanations are always excellent.
If build, output, and flares all have its pros and cons that's hard to select a clear winner, then wouldn't price play a big role if you add lens, adapter, and filter into the picture? I believe some products here doubles the competitor which makes a value buy push it over the line. Just my opinion.
I've DP'd a handful of features on different models of Red camera and always find myself grabbing 1 or 2 shots (inserts, VFX plates, etc) on my iPhone. Still using the 6s Plus... Would love to try one of the anamorphic phone adapters!
I had a Kapkur matched to my Huawei P20 Pro. I got the case, wide, tele, anamorphic. But now I moved on to a P50 Pro and Kapkur seems to be dead. No case. no support. I want to use the anamorphic on the P50 Pro. The only way I think I could do this is to physically cut the metal mount that I ripped off the worn out P20 Pro case and file it down until it is a standalone piece that could attach to another P50 Pro rear clear lens cover (if they even make one at this point) So that I could attach the Anamorphic lens. A question for you is are there any way we could mount the Anamorphic Kapkur to the phone if we didn't use the Kapkur mount plate? Could the SURIUI one be used? They seem to have similar mounting mechanism. Also, after seeing your video, I am interested in Sirui anamorphic as I agree with your comments about Kapkur issues.
Just ordered a cheap one few days ago, will test when it arrives. Just worried that my phone doesn't seem to support manual exposure in video on the default app, will try and see :)
You are late to this part of the anamorphic party but good to see you finally dived in. Shooting anamorphic with a smartphone is a quick and easy task it will increase the amount of shooting you do. I think you will find it very rewarding and hassle free. Thanks for sharing this video a lot more "serious" anamorphic shooters might use mobile phone lens adapters more frequently when they realize it can even satisfy an "Anamorphic Elite" like yourself. I will check out the Sirui adapter to see how well it matches footage from their 50mm anamorphic lens.
another interesting and informative video about anamorphic stuff ... but: I "cropped" the image field by enlarging the picture frame, to avoid being distracted by the overly dominant gestures and movements of the hands;-))
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Thanks! I only sometimes use my phone as a supplement for my DSLR, so I was only familiar with clip-on lenses, but these cheaper anamorphics have me thinking about mounts now.
Please note that FilmicPro app does not work on every phone. It seems to be VERY limited to only very few specific phone types and they don't even really state on their Android Storepage which phones work and which do not. So in worst case you blow 13 bucks into the wind for an app that doesn't support your phone camera hardware. Even their free cam-probe app is not very precise at detecting the camera abilities properly. So you may as well just use free camera alternatives like HedgeCam2 or Open Camera which give you manual options for your camera hardware and even allow you to deactivate the stupid noise filter for Video or the dynamic compressor for the mic. The only thing these apps don't have so far is a flat gammacurve. At least not at the time as i wrote this comment.
Hello. I recently got Ulanzi 1.55x and the bokeh is horizontal, what a disappointment : D But, it's good for shooting vertical videos for phone, so at least the bokeh would be correct and if the flare is also vertical, maybe it might look cool for a vertical video : D
hello e-junkie :) thank you so much for your video and your tips ! I am a beginner and i have 3 questions concerning the use of this kinf of anamorphic lens ( with an iphone 13 pro) 1) if i am right the anamorphic lens is mounted on the wildest lens of the iphone and it will change the final ratio aspect of the video, so i ask myself , how will i mix during the editing the images shot with the two other lenses of the iphone that are not anamorphic ? 2) which gumble do you advice me to buy ? 3) which software do you use ? thank you so much for your help ! best romain
@@AnamorphicOnABudget dang i was really hoping to use it with my eos-m (running magic lantern) and my 22 efm lens. It has a tiny front element so I thought it could work. What do you mean by cripple performance. Like there will be a bad vignetting?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Hey Tito, I really wanted the idea of having a cheap anamorphic so I decided to buy the lens and test it out anyways. Here are the results. Very blurry but let me know what you think! Not perfect but the lens was only 30 dollars so I cant complain :) ruclips.net/video/WPSYanXl14s/видео.html
Awesome video on all the choices then. Realize this is two years old. Have you had the chance to use the SmallRig Anamorphic's for a phone? I'm getting mine Thursday and will be mounting it on a 14 Pro and using Filmic Pro to control. I'm used to Anamorphic shooting as I have 4 Sirui's for my GH5. Mark Goldberg - Mayor of B&H. :)
what do you think, is it even technically possible to have higher squeeze factor anamorphic lens for phones? would it even make sense, given the missing focus and hence probably having all the visual artefacts just amplified(?)
1:20,... Nope, NOT started by Moondog. The first of these lenses was the Letus35 Anamorphic for GoPro, and ALL of these lenses are using that same glass. The only differences between them is the housings, and the price. Wait/What - you paid $80 for the Ulanzi?? They're like AU$49.
Is it any cheap anamorphic adapter for example 1" (Canon G7X Mk2) machines? So the compact cameras, which has bigger sensor than smartphone, but smaller than MFT or APS sensor size. I think the smartpone adapter hasn't enough projection circle, but the bigger adapters are too big, heavy and expensive.
I have a previous gen of Ulanzi (still selling on their aliexpress official shop for around 35 bucks). I don't have much understanding how focus works, but it seems to shift focus distant to a really close distance, maybe even at macro range. I intended to use it for still, like a poor man Hasselblad Xpan, with my mid-low end motorola one vision. The phone is already heavily suffered with extremely poor close-up focus, it's just blur everywhere except the middle of the photo, sorta like a heavy field curvature. So, when I first mounted the lens on my phone, it was so out of focus that I just thought I was a defect unit. I ran around asking my friends to borrow their phones to test, and one of them got a Xiaomi, but it didn't seem to perform any much better. Until another friend offered his iphone XR to try, it turned out that there is not thing wrong with the lens, it just focused fine. So that it means even though it got a universal clipped on mount, it doesn't mean it will work with every phones. The funny thing is it seems to perform much better with the front camera which has a fixed focus lens.
I want anamorphic lens for my gopro hero 8 & 9. My daily carry phones are iphone 13 Pro/Pixel 6 Pro / Samsung s21 Ultra/oneplus 8pro. I love 4k quality for upload on youtube. (hoping for a universal adapter to fit an assortment of lens kit for each phone, however mainly shooting with anamorphic) and i’d also like to future proof my purchase of anamorphic lens for my Canon Eos R. Any suggestions big bro! 👍🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 price is important but imagine capture is not expected to be on major studios level. No Pressure!✌️✌️🎥
Very informative comparison. I am new to this. I do have the Ulanzi, and I am wondering if I need to de-squeeze to a different ratio? 1.44 instead of 1.33? If so, can this be accomplished in Premiere Pro (I see no preset for 1.44)? TIA.
Yes, you need a different desqueeze value. On the Effect Controls tab for the footage, you can uncheck the box that says "Uniform Scale" and either increase the width to 144% or decrease the height to 70%. If you need to fiddle more than that, use my calculator at www.tferradans.com/arcalc :)
Thanks for doing all this research Tito, the idea of shooting anamorphic on a phone is definitely interesting. 1.55x is VERY interesting, I had no idea that was an option!
I have a few questions about using these lenses on smaller digital cameras... If I use the Siri on , say a Sony Cybershot, Would I get the oval bouquet? Since the Cybershot and Canon Powershots have manual modes, could I be better off using manual focus with these anamorphic lenses? Would these lenses even work well on a compact camera?
They would work on a compact camera, but you're very unlikely to get oval bokeh because they're fixed-focus designs and that creates compromises that are acceptable on a phone's tiny sensor, but not so much once you start using a bigger camera.
Man I want to try one of those! The sirui look super fun too. I'm planning to do a full set of anamorfake Russian lenses one of these days. Love love the Helios mod you helped with but waiting on the cash or the gig to shoot real anamorphic 🤙
Thanks for doing this. I just got a phone that can run Filmic Pro and will be getting an anamorphic adapter at some point. Surprisingly, even with your thorough review, it's still difficult to choose as they all have subtle differences.
The Sirui in my opinion is the best of the bunch after, it's the sharpest and I love the flares it gives. Also it's cheaper than the Moment and Moondogs labs and regularly goes on sale. I got mines for aroun $70 bucks and I couldn't be happier. Also Sirui does make a filter mount for Anamorphic Lens. If you get it from a seller on Amazon or eBay it might not come with it so it's best to get it from Sirui itself and definitely make a note of it at checkout
Great vid Dude! QUESTION: Do u remember which custom filter mount u used on the Kapkur anamorphic? I got one used w/ a clip on eBay and I'm enjoying it but it'd be nicer w/ a ND filter. Ur review is spot on, it really doesn't glare out that much which may be a good thing.I think we're gonna all tire of looking at those blue lines across footage. Just give me the cool stretched aspect ratio!
Good job 👍🏼 I’m sticking to my iPhone 11 pro than having a lot to carry with me...... I’ll get the moment because they do the same for DJI drone....... And traveling with a light weight equipment will allow to avoid paying extra weight with airlines, So you did very well !!!!

Can’t speak for the anamorphic, but moment lenses are a life saviour. I rented a zeiss batis for a recent trip, and the fact that I could attach my wide angle to both the tele meant I got a 24 and a 35 to be added for my phone. Ended up being my main camera for the whole trip. Wish I had the anamorphic as well for the trip...
I refuse to believe that your phone can take better images than a zeiss lens

@@cine-ish You do know that A, I said it ended up giving me more focal lengths. Teamed with the *stock* iPhone, it gave me 4 lenses. B, When you travel, usability and quickness is sometimes better. I will most likely invest in a Leica Q for next trip, but the Zeiss Batis with A7r is HUGE in comparison, and took way longer to get ready, or impractical to wear when you are backpacking. C, I never said it took better photos. I said it ended up being my main camera.
I got Ulanzi yesterday, nice lens with good price, now I must probably upgrade my gimbal because weight of phone and Lens l is to high for this, maby i try to add some additional counter weight to it using velctro or sth.

Have you tried using these on any lenses with a mirrorless camera, like perhaps on a vintage bolex C mount lens?
I have not.
Thank you, beautiful presented.
I think the Sirui for me when it is back in stock.
Thank you again ❤️
Liked, Commented and Subscribed with Notification Bell: A lot of sought after info all in one place. Many thanks! Now on to your new videos.
Nice vid... We can create anarmophic effect on apps
It's an amazing work!) Thank you so much for this comparison!
I also use a Pixel 2, and I have the moment anamorphic
another interesting and informative video about anamorphic stuff ... but: I "cropped" the image field by enlarging the picture frame, to avoid being distracted by the overly dominant gestures and movements of the hands;-))
What kind of mounting options are there for the Galaxy S7?
Also, I would like to be part of your contest please, thank you.
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Thanks! I only sometimes use my phone as a supplement for my DSLR, so I was only familiar with clip-on lenses, but these cheaper anamorphics have me thinking about mounts now.
Samsung actually made a dedicated lens and case for the Samsung S7 Edge, you can find it pretty affordably on eBay
I got the ulanzi for 49$ canadian shipping included. i am very happy with it
Thanks for your review, it gives you the feeling to use your phone as a cinema camera! Can you please upload the filter mount 3d printed file?
Can you share the STL files of the filter adapters?
Hello! Thanks for the video. Just a question how to hook the filters to the Sirui, I don't quite understand how you do it. Thanks.
Thanks! The Sirui has a filter holder that clamps onto the lens and gives you 52mm threads. I think I show it somewhere in the review.
Great job !!! Can you please Tell me what brand have anamorphic lenses for phone with câmera positioned in the midle such as Redmi 9 ? Many thanks
Would be awesome once phones have built in anamorphic lens
Hello. I recently got Ulanzi 1.55x and the bokeh is horizontal, what a disappointment : D
But, it's good for shooting vertical videos for phone, so at least the bokeh would be correct and if the flare is also vertical, maybe it might look cool for a vertical video : D
hello e-junkie :)
thank you so much for your video and your tips !
I am a beginner and i have 3 questions concerning the use of this kinf of anamorphic lens ( with an iphone 13 pro)
1) if i am right the anamorphic lens is mounted on the wildest lens of the iphone and it will change the final ratio aspect of the video, so i ask myself , how will i mix during the editing the images shot with the two other lenses of the iphone that are not anamorphic ?
2) which gumble do you advice me to buy ?
3) which software do you use ?
thank you so much for your help ! best romain
I’ve tried to buy an anamorphic adapter for my phone but always something gets in the middle and have to use the money for somethin else...
Sampe problem
How can you add filters to the anamorphic lenses?
Pretty nice video, I'd love to get my hands on some anamorphic lens to experiment!
Great video, I'm just a beginner and this is really helpful!
some people have adapted these cellphone anamorphic lens on vintage camera lens. Can you please make a video on this?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget dang i was really hoping to use it with my eos-m (running magic lantern) and my 22 efm lens. It has a tiny front element so I thought it could work. What do you mean by cripple performance. Like there will be a bad vignetting?
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Hey Tito, I really wanted the idea of having a cheap anamorphic so I decided to buy the lens and test it out anyways. Here are the results. Very blurry but let me know what you think! Not perfect but the lens was only 30 dollars so I cant complain :)

I hope you'll do more videos on mobile options.
Want to check out the Sirui just got the big brother for my blackmagic pocket camera
*watched this 5 times... and could not figure which one should I get????????? any help.*
As always another great video!
Coooooool!! so ,would you like to give us a advice to make a oval bokeh in this part of rig?
Unfortunately there's no way you can get more oval bokeh on a phone unless you're using depth maps. 1.33x and diopters can only go so far.
Did you try Apexel lens ?
I ordered one six months before this video and it never came. The seller never replied or shipped a replacement. :(
I want anamorphic lens for my gopro hero 8 & 9.
When will you make your own line of phone anamorphic lens? I bet it will be out of stock as soon as you release. I'll be the first to pre-order.😁
@@AnamorphicOnABudget Tell us.
Thanks so much for teaching us about anamorphic lenses. I hope I can get my hands on some soon. Good luck everyone!!
Thanks once again Tito!
Thank you! I made my own filter holders using blank uv rings and 3d printing. :P
Good job 👍🏼
I’m sticking to my iPhone 11 pro than having a lot to carry with me......
I’ll get the moment because they do the same for DJI drone.......
And traveling with a light weight equipment will allow to avoid paying extra weight with airlines,
So you did very well !!!!
Any ideas for gopro 8? There is video mode 4000x3000 and its perfect for anamorphic i guess.
Great video! How can I download a printable model of the Sirui VD-01 to 52mm filter adapter?
Thank you! I didn't make that adapter, so you have to get the filter holder from them. :(
@@AnamorphicOnABudget thanks for your answer! Do you know how to find it?
never knew these many things existed. thanks man
Great content! I am really enjoying your channel! Thanks for all the work you put into your videos. I just ordered some anamorfake aperture discs from you on eBay. I am excited to try them out on my Helios 44-2 and my Canon 50 1.4! You captured some great footage in this video and in the anamorfake videos as well. I am considering picking up some anamorphic mobile lenses too but have not made up my mind on them yet. This video is very informative about them. Thanks!
@@AnamorphicOnABudget You're welcome :)
@6:48 looks like the commercials that advertise pills with major side effects 😂
I get your reference, at the same time, it's how pharmaceutical companies want us to perceive being old. "Crazy and nonsensical". Fortunately, it's not a reality. :)
Você filmou no Brasil?
Sim! Perto de Salvador. :)
Likeing the sirui look for sure
Do you Like 1.55 or 1.33 on phones anamorphic
That moment lens is nice!! Great video!!
