I kind of agree with you that without doing side by sides most people would be absolutely blown away by almost every modern laser/led projector. XHU has some very good features like optical zoom and the hybrid light source and I think that should be commended. That said, if you're spending money (kind of a lot of money), I think getting the best of whatever is on the market makes sense. In this case XHU is the best when it comes to 3D performance and flexibility in placement, but has lower overall picture quality due to contrast issues. Anywho, thanks for the shoutout, great video as always :)
Thanks dude. I wholeheartedly agree. I think my point was that certain features are more valuable than others to individuals and that to me personally contrast ratios have now reached a point where I can’t tell the difference anymore unless the two projectors are side by side. I like your projector vids Paul I really do, and I'm quite knowledgeable about projectors having used them for 20yrs now, but your perspective about lumens, contrast and so on has been undermined by the fact that you have an ALR vividstorm and that just makes all the difference to black levels (ie moving it down) which impacts perceived contrast (ie raising it). This is provided the projector has sufficient lumens to overcome the typical lower gain of the ALR screen. If you reviewed two projector products with measurable contrast differences on a decent quality 1.0-1.3 gain white screen in a less than perfect room I think your perspective on specs might be quite different.
You are correct, I put it like this: Everyone can see the difference between 'bad' and 'good', but most people don't see it between 'good' and 'very good'.

If this was short throw my TV would be gone as it's actually cheaper than the 86" TV I was looking at getting - at what distance from the surface would the projector have to be to get that size image? I'm sure another creator has probably covered it but many don't give a decent distance to screen size list.
I love your videos! On this one, I have to say, when you started to talk about how as kids we only cared about big screen and not bright screen, you're talking about a pitch-black movie theather, so surely that wasn't a problem back there. in home environments not everyone can (or even want) to get completely in the dark to watch something in the middle of the day. Plus, two minutes later you say "everytime I see a projector this bright I-I'm honestly mesmerized by it" xD
You see, whether a room is pitch black or has the curtains open contrast ratio is still a thing. The projector casts light to give us a picture but leaves the light off for the darker areas of a picture. Some do this better than others and the worse projectors have grey areas in totally dark rooms instead of black areas, and this projector is TECHNICALLY worse than its closest competitors at doing so. The same was true in the cinemas in the 90’s, some were better than others but we didn’t notice or care. The brightness of a projector is a different capability from its ability to leave areas dark.
Paul, a video challenge for you - can you make a video for those of us with small or odd shape rooms that can't fit a 100" screen but who really want a UST projector - is there one that can throw a smaller pic like 160cm in that incredible quality but close up to the screen so we don't have to share the room space with a long throw one... ??? I know its illogical but hey, I am not Spock! Thanks for putting the smile back each video, love the humour.

I love your work Paul! Especially your honesty and habit of covering all the aspects of each new equipment. But when I heard you praising “digital” keystone correction right after pissing on digital zoom and how it introduces artifacts I became like 🤔. Aside from this, thanks a lot for the review
Another great video! On the topic, Netflix is no longer the darling child of streaming services, not being certified for Netflix doesn't carry the same weight it might have a few years ago.
As the owner of a dirt cheap RedMi 85" TV I can confirm that the size trumps any HDR etc that Samsung and LG have for another $1000. 85" is a fantastic size. As for projectors, my low end XGIMI is barely 2" bigger due to the fact I can't get it far enough away from the target wall. Maybe this unit here could be the upgrade I need. The zoom is what I need, which is probably in fact a reverse zoom and actually making the lens more Wide Angle. Good stuff.
He did well to not mention 4K in the title and description, for those wondering this is a 1080p projector with pixel orbiting - not a true native 4K DLP.
While it does limit your max frame rate that will mostly be a problem for gamers running really high frame rates at high resolutions. Where the pixel orbiting lets you down is brightness, you are relying on persistence of vision which is why units like this have a lower lumen rating.
What is the laser speckle like on the Vividstorm Obsidian? Many people complain about the speckle on ALR screens - I plan on sitting rather close to it, and I'm deciding whether to go with Xgimi Aura UST or Horizon Ultra (using a Vividstorm screen).
Hi what is best way to connect up a sound bar via e-arc if the pj is at the back of the room and you want the sound bar at the front so it's facing you. Also will I get dolby atmos if I buy a sb with it
Bought the project based onto review but now need a fixed frame "cheapish" screen any recommendations - Will be Ceiling mounted in a light controlled room
You’re absolutely right that most people neither notice nor care about lumens or contrast, except when it’s really bad. For me, it’s just numbers used in a willy waving contest. But then I’m also one of those people who thought the original HD release was focussed on entirely the wrong things. Yes, I love the improved sharpness and clarity of the picture, but that’s about it. Sometimes I find the higher resolutions introduce a level of “uncanny valley”, making even slightly fettled films look somewhat unreal. But the thing that really bothered me was the people babbling on about how you could count the wrinkles on Harrison Ford’s face. Sorry, but if you’re noticing details like that, you’re not really enjoying the film, which kind of defeats the purpose. Oh, and “hoik” is very much a real word. I use it a lot
Hi:) thanks for the great review. I have a bit of a weird question- does the RUclips app support changing the playback speed? It is quite a big decision Factor for me and I can't find the info anywhere. Thanks in advance:)
I’m going to watch The Marvels this weekend, as I’m sure you will be too as a marvel fan. Being the more knowledgeable about cinematic elements which cinema would you recommend for this event? The two nearest to me are Vue and Reel.
That’s a good question actually! It’s a weird thing because you forget after about a minute. Personally I would always hook up my projector to the surround sound system for long term use, but the speakers are ace for portability
Depends where you sit in relation to the projector I suppose. When in the garden we sit behind it so the sound is roughly coming from the right place but when I had a ceiling mount used a 5.1 setup to avoid this
The star wars skit was super funny. Reminded me of the old ch4 tv show the Adam and Jo show back in fhe 90s and 00s where they did this all the time. 😂
@@paulhibbert thanks for the reply! Basically the big difference between the two is higher brightness on Ultra and lower refresh rate? If going on a dedicated dark room basement probably isn't enough to justify higher cost?
It's all about those lumens!!!! For me anyway 😅 I moved back to a TV because I wanted to be able to open the curtains and no 4k projectors at the time. Still might be a bit before I can get enough lumens for this room
I paid £1500 on a black Friday deal for a pseudo 4K Acer about6 years ago, £1750 seems okay to me for what it is, especially if it’s True 4K, also is there a mount on the base to hang it from the ceiling?
I bought an Acer M550 at around the same time as you (Nov2017). It is far superior to the XGIMI (and even quieter). Both use the same pixel-shift technology from a 1080p panel, so neither are “True 4k”. You can manually do all the same adjustments with the Acer (plus vertical shift) including optical zoom, and it has much better contrast. I bought the XGIMI for the bedroom, but it isn’t a replacement for the Acer. I’ve tried several much more expensive projectors but they have all been too noisy for a marginal picture improvement.
My long comment got lost… In summary: this is not “True 4k”, it’s 1080p pixel-shifted. Your Acer is still much better (M550? I bought one at the same time - nothing
The motors are cool and the look is great, but what really sells me on it is the optical zoom. Automatic keystoning is even better. Totally agreed on the shilling of nits and contrast. I'd have to ageee. This looks like a game changer. Only one question: With Android 11, can you automate it? Thanks for another great review. See you next Saturday.
"Totally agreed on the shilling of nits and contrast." Ironically, it's people like you and him, that are victims to "corporate greed" You are being pushed DLP projectors up the wazzoo, which has been known to have poor contrast ratio for over a decade, which does matter _a lot_.
@@ALaModePi I did watch it. And in fact, contrast ratio matters _more_ than what manufacturers make it out to be. Manufacturers tend to focus on numbers people actually understand, such as resolution, which actually doesn't matter all that much past a certain point. And the reason most manufacturers don't focus on contrast ratio as much as in other areas, is because they are pushing products that have very poor contrast ratio, such as any DLP projector. For instance, a 1080p LCoS projector will look better than a 4k DLP projector in dark scenes. There is no point in having 4x the pixel count, if all you have is 4 times more pixels that look like shit.
Dude. Your opinions aren’t facts. We have a difference of opinion on what really matters when watching movies. The difference is that my opinion hasn’t changed since I was a kid in the cinema, and yours was changed when TV manufacturers started telling people what they should care about.
To add to Paul's reply, it's particularly worth getting one for any fridge/freezers in the house. If that dies, you might want to know how long it's been off for before deciding whether to salvage the contents.
Thanks Paul, great one. I bought it because it is advertised to have HDMI 2.1 on board, but it actually does not (only HDMI 2.0), which makes it impossible to have RGB color via PS5 on 4K at 60Hz with HDR enabled. I feel a little scammed though...
I bought a cheap used 1080 projector think its an epson, in the summer i hang bedsheets from the windows and take it outside and we sit in the garden enjoying a movie. Even watched a show or two that way in the hot tub. I paid £40 for the projector obviously its not going to replace your tv bit gor after dark uses cant beat it plus when ot dues or the lamp fails, who cares.... Dude. Tons of projectors do this. It's called keystoning. It i is HIGHLY recommended You never use this feature because it will deteriorate the resolution of your image. This is a lifestyle projector. There are many projectors in the same price range that provid much higher sharper picture and better contrast. But yes the lens cover is cool 😐
@@bumbozambumbazebulon6738 sure. For contacts, I recently purchased an Xgimi Ultra. I wasn't pleased with the overall picture so I returned it and then I purchased the recently released BenQ HT3560. You really don't know what you're missing until you buy a trusted brand name projector. So I really can say that the BenQ is better than the ultra in both picture sharpness and contrast, since I've literary owned both 😄

My friend bought a C1 rather than the XHU on the back of the same review. He LOVES the picture quality but the lack of optical zoom has made placement difficult for him.
@StevePrior-rr1jn I guess the optical zoom would give an advantage of additional 30 inches. If placement is already an issue, optical zoom might still not resolve it.
Make sure you check your own packing dude, those dogs at the airport are devil's for the dust, they really have a habit and can pick that stuff up nasaly from miles. 😂
6:46 so I don't really agree with that. Technology is about comparision. Something is faster, something is thinner, something is lighter. It might be that it does not affect usability, but there are differences. Imagine a person that sees a monitor that is able to display 256 colors. If there is no comparision, it will be "fine" or "enough". But turn on side by side the one with 16mln colors and there will be "WOW" Same with 120 vs 60Hz on phones. Does that mean that it does not matter? No I understand you are defending the product you have been provided, but I would agree that it doesn't matter only when it is (almost) negligible to the end user or does not increase usabiilty. In this case - I can't judge
As I said in the video (and you’ve just alluded to yourself also) it does matter, but only up to a certain point; if the only way to tell the difference is to have them side by side then you’ve gone past that point and it no longer matters.
Ok, I could partially agree :) partially because sometimes only by comparison you could say this is better or not, still both might be acceptable. But one could be better and it might be visible
I'm pretty sure the reason I used to go to the cinema was not for BIG or lumens or whatnot. It was because cinemas showed new films that were not on TV. As for all the technical stuff, two points. First, no matter how big, bright, high-definition or loud a system is, the story is the same. If that is what interests you (and really, it's the only reason I watch something) then nothing else matters. Second, there are producers / directors who seem to delight in sabotaging their product with purposely dim lighting or mumbled / mangled sound. It must really annoy people who have spent thousands on expensive kit to not be able to hear the dialog because of "creative" decisions made in production. And since we watch all content in lit rooms, so that other family members can do their own things, it all becomes moot.
You wouldve avoided Showcase of you ever worked there, what a shambles of a company. Terrible gear done as cheaply as possible too. Might be different these days. Bet minimum wage hurt them in 1994 they paid staff working until 2am £2.60 an hour. Perks were 2 free tickets a week and a communal taxi home after 10pm. Ushers used to throw bin bags of rubbish into suspended ceilings. Projection booth supervisor turned up tripping his nuts off wasted on magic mushrooms. Our cinema one of the managers had a cannabis grow in the suspended ceiling sbove the projectors. Oh and the general manager got fired for cooking the books too. The area managers had some really awful attitude to staff too, if you were ever unlucky enough to answer the phone to one theyd carry on like royalty. Sorry the manager youre after isnt at their desk, well send an usher to search the finema for him then.... Dont get me started on the hotdogs there was no controls over them theyd be left on all day then sold in the evening. It was a fun job but akin to slavery. For that £2.60 an hour you know those huge illuminated signs outside with the Films on?
2001 recreation sent shivers down my spine. We shall call you Stanley going forward 🤔😉
Tyra Banks Jurrassic Park was worth the whole video!... lol
Another great video! On the topic, Netflix is no longer the darling child of streaming services, not being certified for Netflix doesn't carry the same weight it might have a few years ago.
I have a Nakamichi soundbar which we love. How do I get an HDMI from the projector up front to the input on the bar??
You reckon you can tell the difference do you? 😂
While it does limit your max frame rate that will mostly be a problem for gamers running really high frame rates at high resolutions. Where the pixel orbiting lets you down is brightness, you are relying on persistence of vision which is why units like this have a lower lumen rating.
Happy Sunday Paul.
What is the laser speckle like on the Vividstorm Obsidian? Many people complain about the speckle on ALR screens - I plan on sitting rather close to it, and I'm deciding whether to go with Xgimi Aura UST or Horizon Ultra (using a Vividstorm screen).
This may be a dumb question but is there a way to connect a terrestrial tuner to this? I am guessing maybe a Humax box using HDMI?
Could you do a side by side comparison with the nebula cosmos laser 4k? Thanks, cool videos by the way
Hi what is best way to connect up a sound bar via e-arc if the pj is at the back of the room and you want the sound bar at the front so it's facing you. Also will I get dolby atmos if I buy a sb with it
Omg I pissed my self laughing at this video. The starwars cut out was brilliant Paul.
This projector with apple tv is way tooo good! nice video btw
How small can you make the screen with the optical zoom? Say from 2.5 metres, what’s the smallest screen size?
Bought the project based onto review but now need a fixed frame "cheapish" screen any recommendations - Will be Ceiling mounted in a light controlled room
What screen are you using in the bedroom? 🤔
Amazing review.
One question about this projector: can't you just Chromecast Netflix off your phone to it, in 4K?
Looks fab and top review thank you, just a thought couldn't you just side load the netflix app on this to get round the no netflix app ?
I just bought this projector and I'm thinking of using it with the ALR UST screen? but I'd like to get the opinions of other users before I buy it.
Thanks for the video
Question though how will this perform with a curved screen or an anamorphic lense
Can you plug in freeview like a normal TV just watch normal TV programs?
I’m going to watch The Marvels this weekend, as I’m sure you will be too as a marvel fan. Being the more knowledgeable about cinematic elements which cinema would you recommend for this event? The two nearest to me are Vue and Reel.
Hey question: where did you get the pictures on the wall?(behind your computer monitors) they so sick.
Thanks man! They’re my own design and you can buy them in the merch section of this video 😁
2001 score you got me in the feels my guy . i fking love it both of em .
Are you really in the UK? I mean, during your walking segment it was relatively sunny and not dreay and raining!
As always...great review. Cheers!
Isn’t the benq x3100i the best projector at this price point?
Question for projector users. Do you find it odd thf sound not coming from the the screen?
That’s a good question actually! It’s a weird thing because you forget after about a minute. Personally I would always hook up my projector to the surround sound system for long term use, but the speakers are ace for portability
Depends where you sit in relation to the projector I suppose. When in the garden we sit behind it so the sound is roughly coming from the right place but when I had a ceiling mount used a 5.1 setup to avoid this
Yes. I pipe it to speakers nearer the front of the room.
Neesha made these noises when she saw how tall Stu is xxx
🤣🤣🤣
@@paulhibbert Good job she didn’t do the noises she made when she saw my beard, I think you’d probably get demonetised 😏 xxx

Happy Saturday Paul. How's the Ezviz collaboration coming along?
Not started that one yet! Just finished doing an ecovacs deebot omni x2 review!
@@paulhibbert is that a robot vacuum? If it is then it'll have fun with you throwing sugar round your kitchen like a complete moron 😂🤣🤣
@ial6658 we shall see 😉
The star wars skit was super funny. Reminded me of the old ch4 tv show the Adam and Jo show back in fhe 90s and 00s where they did this all the time. 😂
Is there enough sustainable difference over the killer deal currently of the XGIMI Horizon Pro?
Hard to say as I don’t know what the deal is, if you’re talking hundreds of pounds then take the deal 😊
Why would you get an UST over this out of interest? Thanks
"Totally agreed on the shilling of nits and contrast." Ironically, it's people like you and him, that are victims to "corporate greed"
You are being pushed DLP projectors up the wazzoo, which has been known to have poor contrast ratio for over a decade, which does matter _a lot_.
@@saintkamus14go watch the video again.
He says those thing do matter, but not as much as the manufacturers make them out to be.
Great video mate, unrelated topic though, sort of. Energy monitoring smart plugs, worth getting or a pile of sh*t?
If you want to track energy usage of individual items then they’re dead good 😁
To add to Paul's reply, it's particularly worth getting one for any fridge/freezers in the house.
Is this really true?
Apple used to avoid talking about specs and focus on features …at least until they ran out of new features.
I think @paulhibbert needs to start reviewing bed frames next :P
I bought a cheap used 1080 projector think its an epson, in the summer i hang bedsheets from the windows and take it outside and we sit in the garden enjoying a movie. Even watched a show or two that way in the hot tub.
I paid £40 for the projector obviously its not going to replace your tv bit gor after dark uses cant beat it plus when ot dues or the lamp fails, who cares....
Used quality ex school or husiness projevtors csn be had for next to nothing these days
Of course you’re not worried about nits 🥚 xxx
🤣 I am worried about the ones you have. Poor buggers have to be associated with you! Xxx

Does it have a headphone jack?
Does it do anamorphic or do you still get black bars?
You'll still get the bars... It's 16x9
Hoick is definitely a word. I favour a C but you're correct
I too favour the C 🤣
is there a version of this video replacing your head with actual footage of the projector video running ??
Is there a version of this comment where you haven’t given it a thumbs up yourself to try to make it look like you aren’t alone?
I will use this for my movie nights
Oh… it’s not just the corp greed of the manufacturers it’s also the broadcasters too…. Compressing the SD channels so much to make the HD look significantly better so they can then charge extra for HD channels…
This looks amazing and getting rid of having to setup or place properly is a "game changer"
@@RagnarCrumpetsdude please name the superior competitors in that price range please 👀
@@bumbozambumbazebulon6738 sure. For contacts, I recently purchased an Xgimi Ultra. I wasn't pleased with the overall picture so I returned it and then I purchased the recently released BenQ HT3560. Same price range. I was under how much sharper the picture was. Same screen. Same content. (Fixed frame Celexon 108", John Wick Chapter 4K) WOW. You really don't know what you're missing until you buy a trusted brand name projector. So I really can say that the BenQ is better than the ultra in both picture sharpness and contrast, since I've literary owned both 😄
You should do a review on Apple TV
I am curious about it, now that I am an official Apple fan boy!
@@paulhibbert Its very good, I use it in the living room and my bedroom, its a great little box.
If you can plug in an Apple TV to the hdmi port there’s your way round the ‘Netflix not allowed’ issue with this projector. I love my little black box and it’s not even the latest model remote.
Loved the review, but then I saw the price 😉
Cheaper than a 100” TV 😉

100% agree with this ridiculous chasing of 2 % better on something......exactly same ridiculous chasing of latest GFX cards et el
was saving for this one until i saw @TheHookUp video. Now i'm aiming at hisense c1.

I would be interested if it could be mounted to the ceiling. But that is not the point of this thing😅
It can still be mounted! It what’s the usual mounting hole in the bottom 😁
But turn on side by side the one with 16mln colors and there will be "WOW"
Same with 120 vs 60Hz on phones. Does that mean that it does not matter? No
I understand you are defending the product you have been provided, but I would agree that it doesn't matter only when it is (almost) negligible to the end user or does not increase usabiilty.
Are you being hacked?
There’s a video which is showing deleted.
I’m not as tech savvy as you but wanted to make you aware
Pretty sure you’re intentionally missing my point 🤷🏻♂️
You get what you pay for, looks like a decent projector.
Worst thing ever was clearing rubbish up, picked a large drink cup up and thinking my god thats heavy they obviously didnt drink much, then it dawned on me, the cup was warm.........
Sounds like a dream job, as in nightmare. 😂
@@biggusdickus5986 don't get me wrong we had a lot of laughs too. Funniest thing I saw was a lady changing the pepsi syrup and when she took the plastic cap off the bag was already punctured and gushed concentrate all over her, the floor, the equipment and she just stood there screaming....
Took the finish off the sealed floor too, nasty.
Worst part was customers behaviour especially female Travellers they'd literally rip each others hair out and parents overfeeding their kids then Bleeeeeeeeeeeaaarrrrr on the carpet. We spent so long arguing over who was gonna clean it the carpet was ruined, so rather than get in trouble we cut a square out of the puke area and then cut an identical square under the managers desk then used spray glue to fix both down, carpet fixed well the one you could see.
For that £2.60 an hour you know those huge illuminated signs outside with the Films on? The ushers have to climb that no safety gear aside from a hard hat and change it every Thursday, same with the track signs on the wall in the foyer at the time, huge ladder needed.
To change bulbs in screens it was using a tall o scope with minimal training (IE 5 minutes)
I haven't been back inside a Showcase since the 90s
The stories I could tell honestly and I was only there a year....
Looks great 🎉
