Tony struggled to do the 900 because he was the first to do it. It's like the 4-minute mile phenomenon. Everyone thought it was impossible until it was done, and then all of a sudden it was done by dozens of other runners in the same year.

Agreed. This new age of skating is INSANE. I can't even comprehend the level of focus and skill and athleticism required to pull off these stunts. Truly impressive.
the pipe that they are using is much bigger than the one tony hawk used.. these 900s take nothing away from hawk's achievement. it's still a difficult trick to pull if you use a pipe with the same dimensions.
Vert has always been what I like but the new park category format is by far my favorite now. Jimmy Wilkins, Cory Juneau, Shane O'neill, and Mark Suciu are my favorite skateboarders.
I feel like when you land a trick which has never been landed before you should win. A 1,260 gets landed for the first time in X-Games history and it takes second place??? WHAAAT I also think that if you land a run that you already won with there sound be at least some kind of deduction.
Ehhh... as Bob said, in that particular competition, they judge *both* tricks, not just the vert one. His first trick was kind of weak. It's kind of like in street if someone ends with something insanely difficult, like Shirai did this year - it helps your run, but it doesn't negate the rest of it (even though I personally think Shirai should have won street). A NBD shouldn't automatically earn victory in an event that isn't solely based on that trick. If Nyjah Huston did nothing but ollies his whole street run then whipped out a biggerflip-back tail-big flip out on a hand rail, which I'm assuming has never been done, that doesn't mean he automatically wins.
@@PalmelaHanderson but its called big air, implying that the trick in the pipe should count the most. Nobody cares about the ramp trick before. Your comparison with street is pretty weak because street is already set up for more tricks and variations, with big air you only get 1 opportunity
queraweed just because you don’t care about the first trick doesn’t mean the run isn’t scored on both tricks. If nobody cares about the first trick why have it at all? It would be the ramp leading directly to the quarter pipe without the jump in the middle.
These new generation of skaters was amazing..900 to them is like easy work.. My goodness.. and also the high Air.. 😮 The way these skaters are evolving nowsaday just crazy..
@@zyx777zyx Yeah that, but there's also style. It feels bad to say, but it's true. Style plays a big part of the overall impression when watching skateboarding, and the judges aren't robots. I think what Jagger was doing is insane, and he will be a monster in the coming years, but style is a real part of skateboarding.
These guys are so precise and technically advanced that it is almost not fun to watch skateboarding anymore. I wonder in the park and street disciplines, if they plan it all exactly out beforehand or do they make it up as they go? Or do they have a rough idea and make adjustments when necessary? Im kinda new to skateboarding sorry
Belief is everything. Tony Hawk created the belief that the 900 could be achieved. Just like when Roger Banister ran the first 4 minute mile, it created the belief that it could be achieved. So much so that 24 runners did it the following year. They are both pioneers and have advanced their respective sports.
MrBigT they don’t sell out the stadium completely. When I was there last year it seemed like they sold it to quarter capacity. You also don’t have assigned seats so you sit where you want. If they did either do assigned seats or sell out the stadium (not that the xgames could) you would have to pick which event you want to watch and that would be pretty much the only event you would really be able to see, all of the events are placed right next to each other so you go watch big air, then street starts so you move to that side of the stadium and watch that and so on.
not a skater at all .. well, I did have the santa cruz corey o ' brien back in the day haha.. but (also) for me there's something incredibly satisfying to see the part where they leave the high ramp to increase their speed after their first aerial.. and then.. this super high air.. ah. sorry for the lack of knowledge of terminology , really liked it. :-D
