Now that we unlocked the Rock Box name a riff that uses it!
December Collective soul
Marry had a little lamb.

From now on my playing will forever be "tech-knek-cull". So cool!
Can you do someday, Scott Gorham, John Sykes riffs during their Thin Lizzy (1981-83) days?
Living After Midnight, baby!
Just Like Anything from Slash's Snakepit (more or less)
I may not write the next Runnin with the Devil. At my age getting dressed is the devil
Haha,I hear ya!😆
lol 😂
You could write a naked riff 😂
That's gold right there. Me too
🤣🤣🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Besides being an amazing guitarist and teacher, Robert delivers killer customer service. I made a boneheaded mistake signing up for this class and he got me squared away in no time. Support this man!
Mr. Baker I want to thank you. I have taken your free Chops Builder course and purchased the Essential Sequences, and they have unlocked my playing in ways I never thought possible. I've been able to take some of the examples that you demonstrate and make up riffs using them for an example, and shift it to different keys. I've also been able to apply the techniques you show in minor pentatonic to the major pentatonic and immediately started figuring out riffs to songs that I never thought I knew, lol. If you had told me a month ago that I would be able to make up a guitar solo I would have told you that you were crazy, lol. Even though I'm really just starting to learn to solo I've actually been playing guitar off and on for about 35 years or so. I'm pretty good at following along and picking things up cause that's how I learned most of what I know, but I also LOVE how even in this video you break it down so even a beginner can grasp it. One of the best teachers out there hands down. You truly have me playing like I never thought possible. If anyone reading this is on the fence about taking any of Robert's courses, that probably means you NEED it.
This is so awesoem to hear Austin. Thank you for gettign the courses
Every time I hear Paul Kossoff play that Fire and Water riff I can hear Skynyrd's Cry For the Badman. Gary Rossington was a huge Paul Kossoff fan.
I lost the tip of my left index finger in a machine at work alla Iommi and played 'the Box' with middle and pinky finger since '78 as well as the adjacent 5th inversion lots!
One of my favourite 'rock box' riffs is Goliath from Mars Volta. There's a bit of variation, yes, but that song is what actually keyed me in to this concept in the first place. 'Rock box' is a perfect name and I'm mad that I didn't think of it myself.
Loving the new riff course! It's so incredibly fun. I never thought I'd be able to write a song, but you make it all so easy. And thanks for making it so affordable, too!
I’m all over this. Buying it today. You’re definitely the riff master. Thank you 🙏
Fun fact, the "Rock Box' was NOT the biggest take away for me, it was the explanation of using Power Chords as a rhythm and simple arpeggios over them as a lead.
I feel like when I sit down with my Guitar tonight, I'm gonna be using loop pedal and REALLY practicing arpeggios and what type of chords go into a key!
Thank you for your latest course. You are a great teacher and I appreciate all your efforts to make us better guitarists!!
Great stuff, Robert! Delving into the genius of Steve Clark and his penchant for penning amazing riffs and irresistible hooks would be a great episode to your amazing channel. Cheers!
For this about to try this lessson, I salute you!
Nice lesson Robert! Thanks for the knowledge.
I can't wait to dig in to this one . Keep up the great work 🤘🎸👍
Very useful information brother. Thanks Robert. I was literally thinking about writing a song earlier then your video uploaded. Awesome thanks this does help me
Just enrolled in the course!!!! Thanks!!!
I really admire your approach through rhythm guitar to find the leading notes👌I’ve been a practicing muscian for 30+ years and Im always striving to understand the guitar more! Thanks for this 👍🏻
Robert -you are such a great teacher. Your channel is awesome
Love the guitars and all of the tips!
Sounds smooth. Thanks for the tip!
That's cool l know a lot of chords including fifth chords and scales I have been struggling to come up with original riffs this opened the door for me.Thanks for the video.
Nice! Really useful insight!
Hell yes dude just bought it. Loved your rock sequences course been working on that stuff the past month! I really love your stuff dude I wish I would have discovered it earlier!
Mind Blown! I’m a beginner guitarist and this made perfect sense to me!
I immediately started coming up with ideas while watching this!
Just got the course . Ive been try to put a finger on what i need with my playing and this is what ive been trying to figure out. Im really bad at paying attention to tutorials but for some reason I can learn from your videos🎉
Thanks so much Mark!
I so dig your channel and love your courses! Signed up last night when the email popped up! I am in for the long haul Brother!
Fantastic deals for the insane amount of content!
Thank you ROBERT! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
You da best! Thank you my homie
Your tone is so crunchy, love it.
Just got the course. Cheers.
Thanks for another awesome course!!! Got mine!!!
Thank you Cathy!
Your music room has been upgraded Robert.
Love the riff❤ great video
Just bought the course can’t wait to get started.
I love your teaching style & all the really cool stuff you cover!!! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a great little trick and will open up all kinds of doors to you. Just a warning though, because I learned this early in my playing and used it extensively. But, I eventually found myself in a rut because I relied on it too much. I didn't vary it up enough. Just make sure you change up the order that you play the positions in or you might find yourself in the same place I was.
Good luck and keep rockin'!
Counter argument: Remember that the second best selling album of all time is Back in Black by AC/DC, the band that's made like 14 albums doing pretty much the exact same thing every song, so if you get stuck in the right place, it may very well work out for you! XD
@@kagenotatsumaki Fair enough.
One thing I've found with 5th string powerchords - I sometimes barre the 6th and 5th strings (you probably know this tho :) ) makes the powerchords sound huge (I suppose you could call it Root, root, 5th 5th?)
Excellent course by the way - really enjoying it
It's true, I found that a little while ago and playing in Guitar Center some people have asked me what tuning I was in to get "that heavy tone" and most have been blown away when I told them it was just E standard lol
To put it another way; If you're using the 5th string root, the barred 6th string is a 5th below, the 4th string two frets up is the 5th.
Also Space Truckin' by Deep Purple :)
Bought :) thanks man
🎉PARTY TIME. PARTY TIME
Deadly!! Thank you for the guitar freedom!!
🎸✨🛸
Thanks Robert, you’re awesome
I immediately thought about Rock you like a hurricane.
Epic!!! thanks
Just got the course, thanks!! Keep it bluesy 🎸
Woohoo Thank you!
i personally learn allot of riffs from various genres of rock and metal, and end up coming up w my own stuff combining all those styles.
I got the sequence course and couldn’t pass this one up either. Great stuff and highly recommended!😊
Rock Box 🤘
So many classic rock tunes use this
I've been getting really comfortable with barre chords. One thing I've run into is that I'm just playing by what sounds nice, but when I start with a minor 1 chord I don't know what any of the other chords should be to sound nice 😅
A good place to start playing in minor is to follow the same pattern as you would if you were playing in a major key, but using only minor chords. For the A minor key you would play A minor, D minor, and E minor chords. It is similar to playing in major since they are the 1, 4, and 5 chords of the key. The main chords of a major key are also the 1, 4, and 5 chords but they are all major chords.
Roman numerals are often used to identify chords with uppercase numerals used for major chords and lowercase used for minor chords. What this means in a major key the 1, 4, and 5 chords are notated using Roman numerals of I, IV, and V. In a minor key the chords would notated using the Roman numerals i, iv, and v. I mention Roman numeral notation since you are likely to see it and when you do you should recognize whether the chords are major or minor.
I would suggest beginning with the key of A minor since it has no sharps or flats making it easy to figure out what chords to try. The key of A minor has all of the same notes and chords that C major has. They are known as relative keys. What makes the difference is the focus on A minor, not C major. For the key of A minor the chords are A minor, B diminished, C major, D minor, E minor, F major, and G major. Once you get the pattern memorized move it around to try different keys. Another easy minor key is E minor, which has the main chords of E minor, A minor and B minor.
You can put any combination of chords together to play a song. They don't have to be from the same key. Chords are "borrowed" from other keys all the time. You can change any chord from a song or chord progression you are familiar with to any other chord to see how it sounds. If you don't like it try something else.
your minor 1 chord is also a minor 6 chord of it's relative major key, so basically any chords for it's relative major also work, you can use a major or dominant 5 chord as well in minor, it's the harmonic minor sound used in classical style resolutions
Thanks for the keys to the box🤘🏻
Mississippi queen is another great example of this key. Still a monster riff.
Nice review this week. I purchased that Silverburst V from the demo shop. The frets were just reflecting the light in that picture, they are not gold.
Living After Midnight of Judas Priest is just this in the most blatant form. I love it!
One simple thing that noone seems to talk about when it comes to classic riffs....far more simple than the harmoinc progression....just count how many of them are two bars long......simple but that seems to be the code....some are just repeated others are repeated with a variation however the simple block is the 2 bar phrase....usaully first bar is the question and the second bar is the answer.....
What guitar is that your playing?
I am signing up for this.
My problem was I was always conscious and "fearful" of repeating my self or even (sorta) use the same chords or notes over again. Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton used this "Rock Box" with Alice cooper
This is so awesome.
This is gonna be fun
Aldo Nova- Fantasy uses these chords in the main riff
That was very riffy master Robert 😂🥳
So many of the demonstrations of the box is Helena by Misfits lol
Children of the sea is rock boxy
I uh... always deliberately avoid the rock box. And as for fishing for notes... that's how I find notes that aren't the obvious ones. But I guess that's just what I'm exploring.
Gonna buy your book, based on this video. Good stuff.
Fantasy by Aldo Nova is a great “rock box” riff.
My ex referred to my head as the “rock box” and she was right!
Another way is as Aldo Nova did in "Fantasy " , G , A# , F , C
good video...i'm ordering
I think that winning the firebird would make my year!
Huh? I've been working on Volbeat's "Devil's Bleeding Crown". That's totally the Rock Box.
You could totally do variation of this and call it the "Punk Box" 🤘
Blitzkrieg Box.
Box to lose
A minor g major c major d minor or major depending on flair
Excellent I'll be an instant legend.
Riffs are key...for making a great song greater...It's like using a hook...but more original...!!! 🎩🎸🎸🎸
In the 80s that is what we learned first. The box.
Are you using a hair tie as a string tree on your headstock?
My wife has a rock box.
Same thing can be done with the 12 bar blues. No matter what key, all you need is that and the Pentatonic scale and you can fake your way through 90% of a performance.
love
Sure a minor. A minor 7 or any a minor chord c major 7. G7 or G6. Or even G13. If you want to keep the tonality pure natural.minor. hope that helps you out
Would your course help me to understand how to get that groove type of riffing like Aerosmith
Basic 5ths 4ths Yadayada
I love this ^_^
this is frustrating... I keep trying to sign up for your courses, but no matter what, it's not working (I make an account but it says my email is wrong, so I try to reset it, but I don't get an email sent anywhere.
Hey Sean so sorry it;s giving you trouble. When you can shoot me an email support@robertbakerguitar.com
Use a ton of Reverb + Delay
Man I wish I had more time. I'm relearning guitar . Learning bass and I'm taking drum lessons plus I work 4 days a week. I NEED MORE TIME
Rock You Like A Hurricane.
If you want to go all Janes Addiction, take your A5 and slide up 1 fret. Bam!
I'll have to steal that.
Wouldnt the G be the 7th of A ,and not major but diminished…? Or wait ,”a “minor ….so would that scale be based off C major making 1-4-5 the c-f-g? Also making the d minor ? Sorry I get confused on scale degrees a lot when in minor ,as I do not practice anywhere near enough ( hardly ever lol, always end up noodling 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️) also diminished chord shapes escape me 😂
I knew exactly what you’re talking about but I found the explanation extremely confusing. To me, you were in the key of C but using a minor, which is the 6, C which is the 1, G major, which is really the five chord, F major, which is the four chord etc
So a course on pinch harmonics would be "The art of the squeal"?
Rock box is the root 3rd 5th and 7th
Super close Root 7th 3rd 4th
BOOM!🎸
I have to find rock musicians to colab with.
Didn't you do a vid on this a while back? If not, someone else did. The most simple riff using this box, thstvi can think of, is "Livin After Midnight", by Judas Priest. (Did i just date myself?)
Hey Robert! Do you offer 1 on 1 Skype lessons? I’ve been playing for twenty years and sometimes you’re still talking wayyyy over my head. Great playing and even better personality keep it up dude!
I think an image at the start of the video could have replaced the rest of the video
Cold hearted by Gary Moore
Acacia guitar?
I call my girlfriend the Rock Box!
