100% using fisting as a metaphor for our constant need/desire for stimulation, and how it completely desensitizes you to everything!! 'Something kinda sad about The way things have come to be Desensitized to everything What became of Subtlety'
That is where some micro dosing and something like Wim Hof are really good to help reset and refresh the system. Problem is most people don't even realise what they have done to themselves or how it has impacted them.
If I remember correctly, this video was one that MTV flat out refused to play back in the day...at least in the UK anyway and even when they did eventually, it was only ever after like 9 or 10 pm
"Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be, Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" I think the meaning of the song is encapsulated on those 2 lines. Desensitization due to over-stimulation. And this came out in 1996!👍
Amazing reaction as always guys. Tool are one of my favorite bands of all time, this album is a masterpiece. The guitarist Adam Jones directs all their videos. 🤘🔥🔥
This song bring so many memories. First Tool song I liked. I was deep into Korn, Slipknot, Disturbed when I first heard that over 20 years ago. I didn't like it at first, but I felt like there is something more. I listened to it from time to time. Still didn't like it as much as my favorites, but I started to understand. After some time something just clicked and I was a goner at that point. Still am, to this very day.
Hey Mat and Chels. Happy New Year. Can you imagine listening to this is 1996. If this came out today. Complete banger. The name is a metaphor. For over stimulation. 96 way before their time. Like "hooker with a pen*s" metaphor. Btw Mat sorry you missed the 90s. Thank you
Whenever you read or listen to Maynards lyrics, realize that he is quite frequently employing metaphors -- no matter how graphic they might be sometimes. These vulgarities really help drive home the point he is trying to convey.
That’s exactly the same way we all felt when we listened to the Tool discography. The last Tool track was your favorite until the next Tool track. Then that becomes your favorite. Trust me, there is so much more for you to react to & each one will become your new favorite 🤘🏻🌀
Tool hated making videos but was in their contract so Adam Jones the guitarist, also a visual effects artist who worked on some big movies before Tool became successful. So Tool made them purposely distracting and nothing to do with the songs.
I don't think that videos has nothing to do with the songs, although I often can't find conection. Would be great if we could ask Adam. Videos for "Sober" and "Prison Sex" are more understandable.
Also some folks didn't grow up with MTV and music videos became boring and cookie cutter. Tool NEVER just does what is usual. It also helped make their music videos stand out from all the other 90s music videos on TV
Almost feel like the music video is a distraction with this song. We grew up without the music video, just the cd blaring in the car while we were getting high and just the experience of the music by itself was quite something with the speakers echoing in the back.
@mpls1982 I meant myself and my friends, pre internet, just cd's from the music store. I don't recall ever seeing any Tool music videos back much at the time so don't really relate them with the music.
Lyrically this song has so many double meanings. Maynard is a lyrical genius and told a story about society being over stimulated and desensitized to things we shouldnt but also had jokes about fisting. Relax, turn around and take my hand.... finger deep, knuckle deep, elbow deep, shoulder deep... My song suggestion is "Pushit"
No need to apologize for the jokes in the intro. That is kind of the point of the title and the lyrics. Using an extreme example of how we become desensitized to things in general and need to keep digging further into whatever that is to get enjoyment from it. Up next I'd suggest going with something from the Undertow album to hear the difference before Justin joined the band. Either Bottom or Swamp Song would be a good choice. Bottom features Henry Rollins in it.
In case you haven't been told already, Band member Adam is also a visual artist, and the fucked up brain behind most of their videos. They are disturbing.
There is nothing like the 90s 2nd decade of MTV late-night type rock musically. Tool, Primus, Faith No More, are kinda everything Trent Reznor pretends to be in all his pretentiousness. Def Tones, Korn, Manson, and even Clutch were solid contemporaries but just kinda pale IMO to those 3.

You guys should check out Aenema next. It's from the same album as this.
Only if u Pray for rain
Sink or swim 😂
I would warn them not to watch the official music video since it's so heavily censored
Maynard 100% uses a megaphone in concert in those parts you mentioned.
💯
My favourite Tool Song. Still get shivers by the build up after all the Years.
If I remember correctly, this video was one that MTV flat out refused to play back in the day...at least in the UK anyway and even when they did eventually, it was only ever after like 9 or 10 pm
Yep! 5:20 you never forget the first time you hear that bassline. Still gets me after all these years.
I will watch every Tool reaction y’all do for all time, ever. Another fun reaction. Thanks for the hang, homies. Leaving y’all some algo ❤
Tool almost never disapoints! One of the best bands ever imo!🤘❤🤟✊

God damn... No other band like this. TOOL all day. Great reaction too guys 👌
They do an "Extended Stinkfist" live. Check out the Connecticut video.
EDIT: OH NO! They did the video 😂
Chels face says it all😂
This album is sooooooo epic. You should do a reaction to the whole album.
One of the greatest albums ever made.
This song is rad AF. Your interpretation was peetty much correct
Met Danny Carey a couple of weeks ago, The most genuine genius on the planet! Bonded over Messuggah and them at Knotfest!
Welcome to the 90’s we do shrooms and listen to TooL 😅

😅
you said it perfectly
"omg this is incredible...and thats fuckin weird"

Pretty sure you're right about him using a megaphone in this song. I know I've seen him do it live...I think it was for this song
Cornell has some of the best words.Superunknown album is top notch.

Your favorite tool song is whatever you are listening to now.. except when you have to choose one.
There's naughty Portuguese whispers behind the breakdown
You guys should do right in two by them amazing lyrics and It will give you some stink faces forsure!
You guys rock.
You rock!
Love that you have a nekrogoblikon poster
nice reaction 😀
Keep going down the Aenima album. Do “Eulogy” next.
I'll keep digging until I feel something.
Paul gave up trying to practice with Danny and Adam so many times in a row, for months, perfecting it. This was Justin's first album with them.
Never heard a bad Tool song
Descending look fear inoculam best album I've ever heard. To the grave
Speaking of The Grudge……..
Next song?
Buckle up for the juggernaut.

Kinda amazed you haven't seen this music video before.
Forty Six & 2(on the same album which I fully recommend) is also really good.
Almost feel like the music video is a distraction with this song. We grew up without the music video, just the cd blaring in the car while we were getting high and just the experience of the music by itself was quite something with the speakers echoing in the back.
What? We definitely grew up with the music video.
@mpls1982 I meant myself and my friends, pre internet, just cd's from the music store. I don't recall ever seeing any Tool music videos back much at the time so don't really relate them with the music.
I find it hard to believe you've never heard this song. lmao. It's only been around for almost 30 years.
Great
Deep dive! Do every song!

Everybody seems to be reacting to the same songs. I think you should really go back to the first album "Opiate" i know you'll dig it
Please. Tell me how one prepares oneself for something never experienced before.
In case you haven't been told already, Band member Adam is also a visual artist, and the fucked up brain behind most of their videos. They are disturbing.
Try the band oingo boingo
Pushit, studio version first then Salival version.
HI GUYS!!! Check out KNUCKLEDRAGGER BY YOSEMITE IN BLACK!!!!
Chick is fire
Never watched the official videos
PLEASE REACT TO PALEFACE SWISS - HATRED

Try invincible
The song's not actually about fisting.... or is it?
Don’t watch their videos, just watch the lyric videos.
Now listen to AC/DC lol sounds like nothing is happening…. Talk about desensitization
AC/DC is actually one of Maynard’s favorite bands lol. In a recent interview he said Powerage never leaves the CD player.
@ my comments still applies lol.
Matt definitely should just hear about all Tool songs. Maybe just do the entire Lateralus album in one go? Or seperate, I'll still watch. lol
You need to figure out Tool musically first, then try to understand the lyrics in themselves and how they fit with the music.
Or people can enjoy music however it appeals to them.
