      Maty, this is an evolving researched issue. ANYTHING sprayed or done to these masks causes a problem as these masks are a ONE TIME use only. However, as people trying to find the safer ways to be able to walk around with clean masks. There are many individuals that are using alcohol, bleach, and soap and water to clean these masks which cause immediate damage to the filter, which is why we are trying to find the better method remembering that these are only supposed to be worn ONE time for a few hours. We did a video using the Oven method which has been studied. Here is the link.

      As stated above, everyday things change with this virus, so do what is right for you.

      Hello,
      I answered her....alcohol cannot be used...here is a video regarding the Oven method..research on this issue is evolving as anything messes with the filter of these masks as they are a one time use only. Alcohol, bleach and soap and water are not to be used as per clinical studies.

    I was an RN for 44 years. Now retired. I am horrified beyond belief that medical personnel have to reuse masks and do not have enough PPE. This puts them at such an increased risk of getting the disease. It also has increased risk of spreading the virus to others. Our country has let us all down. So very heartbroken of all the lives lost. So much suffering and grief. If the President had acted sooner we would have been in much better shape right now. People who are saying this is not as bad as the news is reporting are not seeing the reality of this. Thank you for this video and thank you to all on the front lines serving🙏💓🙏💓🙏💓

    My wife has 10 N95 masks for her job. I numbered them 1 through 10 on the inside of the mask, off to the side. She rotates through them: 1-5 for one week, 6-10 for the second week, then back to 1-5. We keep each one in a separate paper bag, and leave them in her car because it gets hot enough to kill the virus without damaging the mask (the max temp is 158F). Lysol and other disinfectant is impossible to find in Houston, and I’m wary of spraying any kind of solution on them because of their reliance on electrostatics for particle capture. Any thoughts on what we are doing?

    Usually hihg performance masks have ELECTROSTATIC CHARGED MELT-BLOWN FILTER in the filter layer. If that is wet for any reason, the mask is nothing better than nonwoven (spunbond) fabric masks without filters. It is still better than nothing but not as effective as expected as a N95 Mask. Recently, a korean company made nano-filter masks which can be washed in the water for multiple times without losing the filteration performance. This is not made with electrostatic charged melt-blown filter but with few layers of nano-filters to physically capture the particles/droplets. But these are just made and they are not available in the market yet. So, you can simply assume that all high performance masks are not washable. If the filter layer (not outer layer not inner layer but in between of outer and inner) is wet, then all electrostatic is all gone and it will not come back even if it is dried completely. Tt is no longer a high performance mask.

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +1

      Thank you for the comment. All masks are a one-time use only. We are trying to provide safer ways of cleaning them, as clinical studies have shown that the use of alcohol, soap and water, and bleach damage the filter in the mask. Those bad practices are being done by many in RUclips, which is worrying.
      Thanks,
      Dr.David

  • @yaneznayu9997
    @yaneznayu9997 4 года назад

    I am given to understand that water/alcohol, etc., will degrade/destroy the electrostatic charge on the filter material. That charge is central to attracting and holding onto droplets and particulates passing through the outer layer.

    I am a dental hygienist. When should you use a paper bag as storage? So after I wear N95 after a day, we put a level 1 mask over the N95, I remove the mask with the container method you showed on the video, then I spray it with disinfectant and let sit x 6mins. - wipe the mask after 6 mins.--Do I leave in container or put in a paper bag for storage until the next use? Thanks so much! your video was so informative!

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +1

      Thank you for the feedback! I am glad it helped you keep the mask clean 🥰. Regarding the storage, I would let the mask dry first prior to keeping in a storage container, or paper bag. You can hang outside if it’s warm. Another thing you can do is lightly spray the mask, let sit for 6 minutes, let it dry for a few hours, and then doing the oven method that I showed on another video. This will help the mask not only finish drying, but also eradicate the virus spores.
      There is a lot of talk regarding where to store, as the virus can last up to 3 days in different surfaces. I use the plastic container, as it keeps the mask safe and enclosed. The paper bag, although more breathable than the container, I feel can have things go in do this porosity. I use the container and have not had any problems.
      Hope this helps!

      Alcohol has not been tested, but you can place the mask in the oven using the oven method to kill germs (I have a video on it). Also, if you place mask in a bag, and place bag in a pot of boiling water and cover for 15 minutes, the humidity cleans the mask and just hang to dry.

    If you have a set of masks can’t you just rotate them? Leaving the used one stored, or hanging in an aired place, for 72 hours for instance? Wouldn’t the virus die after 3 days?

      You can spray the outside if you want. Research everyday is changing, but he key point is that I rather wear a clean mask, then no mask or a dirty one that’s full of germs. I did a video on how to sterilize the virus using the oven, which is evidence based and recommended by n95 manufacturer if you want to see it..I will place the link below. As the Director of Public Safety forthe Metro Atlanta Crime Commission and the head of our crisis response team, I applaud her efforts and they are helpful but she left out a few things. Never ever spray the inside of the mask with a disinfectant. That goes outside of the boundaries of the manufacturer guarantees for performance. And disinfectant penetrating multiple layers may not dissipate evenly not thoroughly. Where did she get the research that it would? Lightly spray a Lysol mist on outside but use soap and a tad bit of water on a Q-tip to clean the inside. Washing face before wearing will decrease dirt, oil or perspiration inside the mask.

    Also, isn't it better to store it in a PAPER bag than plastic closed containers? Tightly closed plastic can change the composition and lead to growth of other microorganisms.

    Do you clean both the inside and outside of the mask?
    Or do you only clean the inside of the mask that makes contact with your face?

    Won't this damage the electrostatic charge in the mask that causes particles to adhere to the fibres and compromising the mask?

      Hello Rob,
      Anything we try on the masks will have some type of damage to it, as these masks are meant to be a one time use only and for certain amount of hours. The key is to find methods that would do less damage. Many are resorting to using alcohol, soap and water, and bleach to clean these masks and unfortunately studies have shown that this products immediately damage the efficiency of the mask. Other methods like this one, do it less. Also, the oven method has been clinically proven to sterilize the mask up to 5 times. Here I leave that video for you..I also did a video showing you how to do your mask with a filter. Thanks you. Dr. David

    Can it be steamed?

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +2

      Hello Carla,
      Clinical studies have shown that a heat temperature of 160 degrees F or 70 degrees C for 30 minutes I activated the virus which is why I made a video using the oven as it is guaranteed to rescue that temperature. You can steam the mask as long as the mask is inside a bag in the container you are using to steam and that the container is covered. However, you must make sure that it consistently stays at 160 degrees the entire time or it will not inactivate the virus. Here is the link to the video I did with the oven. Let me know your thoughts, and have a wonderful rest of your night.

    How many time or days used to this mask??

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +1

      Masks are a one time use only, however due to the pandemic, we have to reuse if no other masks are available. Regarding fit, every time you put a mask make sure to test the fit as the bands can loose its strength and this would give you a good idea as to when you need a new one.
      Thank you for the question!

      Hi! I think it’s times to get a new mask as the layers are falling apart and you need to have intact layers. Look at my oven method video which will help

      Unfortunately studies have shown that alcohol ,bleach and soap and water damage the efficiency of the filter. However, an additional method is the oven method. Here is the link...you can also watch our video on making our own mask with filter which you can wash!

    After the disinfectant dries on the mask, is it possible that you will end up inhaling the smell of the disinfectant while wearing the mask?
