That's why I play paladins differently. You can be good all the time, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to be nice. Also, Paladins don't have to follow a religious doctrine or specific deity either. A paladin could even be an atheist. They need only follow a strict moral path that they are entirely devoted to. those morals don't have to originate from religion.
Joe Swider Why? Do wizards need a god as the source of their magic? In a world were magic exists, why are gods needed to supply power at all? A paladin could very well just be drawing their power from a different type of magic than a standard arcane wizard or sorcerer. The only requirement for being able to draw on that power being a strict devotion to a cause and moral code. Just as Wizards must be devoted to learning their magic arts and committing them to memory, so to must a paladin be devoted to their cause and their standard. It is the extremely high level of singular devotion that matters most. that devotion doesn't necessarily have to be to a deity. Even more to the point in D&D, in the PHBs of some versions it specifically states that while most paladins do follow a deity, some derive their power solely from their sense of justice and their devotion to righteousness. "Whether sworn before a god's altar and the witness of a priest, in a sacred glade before nature spirits and fey beings, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witness, a paladin's oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion." "Although many paladins are devoted to gods of good, a paladin’s power comes as much from a commitment to justice itself as it does from a god."
Yes, a Paladin's power comes from their devotion as much as from their deity. As Much As from their deity. If you want to homebrew it so a Paladin doesn't require a deity, go for it. But, it is a homebrew choice, core rules say Paladins need a deity to bless them as a champion. Good, Evil, Neutral, as long as it's a deity.

a paladin roleplaying a Mary sue character is genius, and sticking to it even in the horror setting is good role playing yet Evelyn got all this hate in the comments -_- why.
Paladins are the Rebecca Black of DnD: _really_ easy to hate on, justification notwithstanding, regardless of whether you actually care about the campaign or not. As can be seen here, a Southern Belle paladin draws hate from out of the woodwork. In episode *1,* no less. Without chance to exhibit depth, without character development beyond an introductory quest, a Paladin draws hate. Guess that's why they're tanks...
I suspect because it's very stereotypical (to the point of annoyance with some) to play a paladin as an ultra-goodie-goodie, shining, fancy do-gooder. Paladins are good-aligned and they do help the innocent, but that by no means requires them to be optimistic and chipper, or naive, or overly cheerful, but that seems to have become the standard that people adhere to when they *don't* know how to play a paladin (defaulting to the stereotype when the character has no depth.) I'm not saying that Evelyn is a shallow character, mind you, since I haven't seen much of this video yet, but I'm just saying that playing a cheerful, justice-blind, do-gooding paladin is kinda like playing an emo, kind-hearted, brooding drow.

Bards get a bad rap, but I believe that is because people want to play Alpha characters, and Bards are better as Beta characters. They can fill the roles that the parties lack, and are some of the most flexible characters out there. I love playing bards.

Paladins are good-aligned and they do help the innocent, but that by no means requires them to be optimistic and chipper, or naive, or overly cheerful, but that seems to have become the standard that people adhere to when they *don't* know how to play a paladin (defaulting to the stereotype when the character has no depth.)
I'm not saying that Evelyn is a shallow character, mind you, since I haven't seen much of this video yet, but I'm just saying that playing a cheerful, justice-blind, do-gooding paladin is kinda like playing an emo, kind-hearted, brooding drow.
"For some reason I have Divine Sense." -Evelyn, Human Paladin
Hi! New viewer here commenting before I start my dive into Dice, Camera, Action. I have zero knowledge of this series and stumbling upon Nate here is such a pleasant surprise. All I knew was that Chris was somehow involved and I loved his guest appearances in Critical Role. Pretty excited!! :)
Edit: Just because I wanna, I’m gonna mark my start date here: 06.27.20 still in the midst of the virus and CR’s starting up again next week. In the mean time, there are so many other cool D&D shows to binge.
How'd you like it?
They all narrate their characters in third person except for Jared, who uses first. Fascinating.
That’s because Jared doesn’t play Diath, Jared is Diath
The world has changed so much since I first started watching this. I miss how I used to feel watching this. Trying hard to not think about how it ended and just watch it as if this is the first time all over again.
I came for D&D and stayed for Chris Perkins
Arthur Caixeta have you started that yet?
Not yet (: I think I should stay a player though :P
Arthur Caixeta so do you play then with a group
Yes, I do ^^ A friend of mine is DM'ing a "Magic the Gathering" campaign and I am a merfolk cleric haha
Paladin + atheistic tiefling sorceress. Perfect combo.
Your characters are like the Breakfast club of D&D. Good fun.
why is Evelyn a southern belle, I love it
Really? i can't stand it! its horrible haha
So fucking annoying.
+Billy D agreed
Personally, I like what she brings to the table. She's disgustingly religious and optimistic and the other characters play off of that. Her obnoxiousness is her charm In a way.
I'm watching for the first time and I find that Paladin REALLY annoying. Should I keep watching?
"We are the wafflecrew, after all" aaaand roll credits
Chris (speaking about Paultin): Was he ever in a boy band?
Nate:
58:55 "EVELYN HAS STARTLED THE WITCH"
Sorcerer: *_I WANT AMAH!_*
You can tell that they rolled for their stats. The paladin's stats are considerably better than everyone else except the bard's.
That was jarring to me as well
I think Jared and Holly just used the standard array, those are exactly the kinds of stats you'd get from there. Anna and Nate definitely rolled.
This is perfect example of why rolling is bad, the paladins 3rd best stat is mechanically (in terms of modifier) as good as everyone else's worst.
Coming back to watch this again after so many years.
It's bittersweet at 3:30 to hear Holly say that Strix "is not afraid".
oh fuck she's a paladin strahd is gonna see her like a fucking torch in pure darkness
PSA: The dungeon master is Chris Perkins. He is the game's premier game master. He's kinda sorta qualified to properly run a campaign. Trust me.
I have no idea what D&D is but I enjoyed this a lot. I like Jared and Nate together.
Check out Critical Role on Geek and Sundry's RUclips channel if you want to see more DnD.
Yeah if you like this definitely try out Critical role and if you enjoy it enough try out roll20 and play in a campaign yourself it seems weird at first but I swear it is the best fun you will ever have
If you want to see more of Chris Perkins as the DM, check out Acquisitions Incorporated.
You can also check out High Rollers on the Yogscast Live channel. Yay, advertisement!
Sam Kemp I can 100% vouch for what he says about roll20. I look forward every week to my next game. Great times
Chris: "Please don't let that become your name."
Oh, if he only knew...
Chris Perkins is such a pleasure to watch DM - they seem like a nice group too. Looking forward to getting to know these characters better. :-D
"Slightly on the attractive side."
SLIGHTLY MY ASS, DIATH IS CUTE AS HELL
I find it quite funny how he has the lowest charisma score in the whole party
Not gay but yea kinda.
E MINOR IS THEIR WEAKNESS
Minors are indeed Jared's weakness
@@yannickdellaert1616 No.
I love how Nate just has all these random props...
Coming back to this after watching Eveningstar makes me miss this crew so damn much
please adjust audio levels. The DM's volume is much lower then everyone else.
watch past 3 minutes.
Mike Manzi i have trouble hearing Nate but that could be my headphones being bad
Really the dm seems pretty loud, yes theres minor syncing issues but its really not that bad
28:24 Chris: it could be made of dead people
Nate: and that would be worse
little does Paultin know that later, in a different series, he will be living in a place made of dead bodies
NATE PLAYS D&D MY DAY WAS MADE
The fact that Nate is a musician in real life is awesome because he like specifies the music he's playing, chord-wise, so you can like visualize it in your ears (because I don't know what the word for imagining what a note sounds like)
Lmbo i love evelyn and Strix. " I know were lost, I believe were lost..." 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Was half expecting Evelyn to cry "LEEEROOY JENKINS!" as she entered the house.
It appeared in my recommendations today. I miss it so much!😭
As an amateur DM who wants to run Curse of Strahd, I can't tell you how helpful it is to have series like this to give my head structure of what to do.
Also very warmed up to these characters by the end of the episode, can't wait for the next episode!
....also it's sooooooooo good to have more examples of Chris Perkins to watch!!!!!
Thank all of you for this. I enjoy the fact that you do not take yourselves too seriously.
Anna:"We are the waffle crew after all"
Perkins:'please don't let that be your name'
Inkboy! 60 episodes later: "Welcome, everybody, to the Waffle Crew!"
just made the wife's whole day she was telling me about this and was really sad that she could not find them but the hunting continued and we found this again she is the happiest person in the whole world to get the share the joys of this with me
Love how easily these sessions flow. Great intro to Strahd.
Welp looks like I'm watching this now ... what am I getting myself into
I loved this series. lol
Can i just saying from the get go (i'm only a few minutes in) but i LOVE the fact that this is being run online rather than a physical tabletop!
Being someone who has quite a few gaming friends over the internet, the fact that WoTC is kinda 'representing' them and acknowledging the capability of over-the-internet play is really exciting to see :D I still think that the physical gathering at a table brings a stronger sense of the game but nowadays a lot is being done to make gaming like this available to anyone and everyone :)
Thanks Chris and the D&D team
+The Aussie GM you should check out itmejp's channel, they've been roll20 based for quite some time, a few years infact ~
I do, I follow a load of their series, i'm just happy to be seeing Wizard doing it :)
+The Aussie GM Forsure! I've been dying to see Chris GM in this type of setting for sooo long
I love the groups Synergy, it makes this even more fun to watch
Bards get a bad rap, but I believe that is because people want to play Alpha characters, and Bards are better as Beta characters. You want something sold (legally), or bought.. the bard is your best friend. They will often get the best prices, sometimes it doesnt even have to be legal. They can fill the roles that the parties lack, and are some of the most flexible characters out there. I love playing bards.
heh with an arcana check of 4.. there could be a giant glowing arrow over it saying ""this is magic" and the mage would be .. "Nope, no magic here"
The disbanded d&d group I was in, I was the bard. I helped with almost everything, except fighting with actual weapons. Which is good, perhaps.
MyticalJ you are important and loved
Bards are baller. Most flexible class there is!
Barbs can do alot of things but not good.
Literally the Jack of all trades, master of none class
Chris Perkins is a DM god
Bored Warlock I agree
I eventually had to stop watching because ginger wouldn't shut up about indoctrinating everybody... Keep your beliefs to yourself zsheesh!
she does get out of hand at times but hey, it could be a hell of a lot worse
1:05:30 one of the most epic lines I've ever heard on a D&D game!
I'm here because the news just broke that this show won't be returning. This show holds a very special place in my heart and I don't think anything else will ever resonate with me as much as this did. I love and miss you wafflecrew.
Watching this because I've just started DMing Curse of Strahd myself. Wanna learn from the GOATs
Evelyn is the entire my little pony show
"he's not... say: a bard!"
*Nate has a diva fit*
Hey everyone. Just a comment to let y'all know I finally am doing a DCA rewatch, starting now, 1 AUG, 2022.
I won't spoil things in these posts, and if I posted a comment on my 1st watch, I'll reply to it there.
Please excuse my feels & shares from here forward.
How's it going
I'm just now starting to watch, on episode 28 and LOVE IT SO MUCH
When Chris did the impression of the distraught mother in that moment I realised - this person is a great DM. That was a brilliant impression.
I like the group dynamic here. Everyone seems to have their own personalities and they clash interestingly
1:26:13 Otto Von Bismarck! I love that historical fellow!
And that's how lathander's holy symbol changed from the sun to the golden waffle
I actually just came here for tips on running the campaign. The fact that it’s run by Chris Perkins and features one of my favourite youtubers Projared is just a huuuuuge bonus ❤️
