    Great how-to video but one important detail is missing: What symptom lead to the need to replace the temperature sensors? What are some of the common symptoms one would experience when each of those three sensors have failed?

    Thanks very much! The GE tech who came to my house and told me the thermistor was bad wanted me to pay over $300 to do what this video teaches and that I followed successfully with the thermistor I ordered online. Very much appreciated!

    Hi Dusty,
    Thanks for your question.
    You could be right - It sounds like your refrigerator is getting "stuck" in defrost mode. It could be your defrost thermistor, as that is what tells the refrigerator when to start cooling again. If that's not operating correctly, the defrost cycle will last too long and cause things to thaw and refreeze, like you're experiencing.
    Hope that helps!

    Hi, Mike. Sorry to hear about this issue with your refrigerator, and thanks for your question.
    Do you see any frost around your evaporator coils, or ice-build up inside your freezer? If so, in combination with your freezer defrosting, it could indicate a problem with your defrost thermostat.
    Having said that, with the control panel on your freezer display not working, both problems could indicate an issue with the control board. If your coils aren't iced over, this would be my best suggestion.

    Hi there. Thanks for your question here. That's correct - about 16.3K ohms is what your thermistor should read, after having been submerged into a glass full of ice water with the sensor reading very close to 32°F.
    A reading that far off, at 26K ohms, would indicate that the thermistor needs to be replaced. If you can supply your model number, I'd be happy to let you know the part number required for your model.
    I hope this helps! Cheers.

    Thank you so much for your video, I was able to execute the necessary repair to my refrigerator within 30 minutes, following your step by step method video. Interestingly enough, 5 previous attempts by certified repair technicians from a large department store never even came close to discerning the problem and concluded that my 9 year old Profile refrigerator needed to be replaced.

    Oh that'd be great! It is a Hotpoint HSM25GFTA double door. I already have changed the Thermostat and the resistance (which was burned out) and it still freezes with ice all over so I'm thinking the sensor or the main board will go next...
    Thanks for your great videos, it makes me feel like a Pro!

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your question. The thermistor in your model is located near the ice maker. If you go to our website, PartSelect [dot] com and type in part # PS1765215, you'll see the diagram where the thermistor is located. If you click to enlarge it, it's number 22 in the diagram. I hope that helps!

    Thanks so much for the help! This video is so thorough that even someone like me who has never owned a pair of trimmers and crimpers or even touched electrical work was able to perform the fix. My only issue seems to be that right after the fix, my freezer started to get cold again, but shortly after it went into defrost mode for a while and got much warmer. I'm hoping that it did that to melt the large accumulation of frost on the coils, because I could see a lot of water drainage at the bottom. of the back plate. It's back on cooling mode, so I hope the warm freezer problem has resolved. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if I have ice. Let me know if you think this may be a sign of a different issue and was never the temp sensor. Thank you for your help!

  • @partselect
    @partselect  11 лет назад +3

    Yes, you can test the thermistors using a multimeter before replacing them. If you need some guidance on how to do this, feel free to let me know and I'd be happy to help!

  • @partselect
    @partselect  11 лет назад +1

    I would have a look at the defrost drain. Inside the freezer there is a cooling coil that collects frost and then automatically defrosts several times a day. The water collects in a tray and then funnels into a hose and then to the outside of the refrigerator to the bottom where there is a tray that evaporates the water. If this drain is clogged then it can cause moisture build up affecting the inside temperature of your fridge.

  • @partselect
    @partselect  11 лет назад +1

    Replacing the temperature sensor could solve the problem you're having. Have you tried adjusting the temperature inside the fridge? That can help with making sure the temperature is correct and your milk won't freeze.

    Thanks for your reply. I discovered one other symptom. The temp adjustment knob for the fridge side works as it should, but the knob for the freezer works only for the off (0) selection and in all other positions (1-9) the compressor seems to run non stop. Needles to say, it's very cold in the freezer side.

  • @partselect

    Hi Ben, thanks for the clarification on your problem. Is the cover you're trying to remove the evaporator cover? If so, there should be four screws holding it in place. Once these are removed, you can bend the evaporator cover gently, in order to displace the tabs at the top of the cover, and clear the light bulb holders (remove bulbs). You should then be able to lift it out of place with some jostling.

    It's showing 44F now in the fresh food section while set to 34F. It's operating range now 40-45F, while it used to be 32-35. The food gets spoiler quicker, there is moisture building up on the walls, and sometimes a small puddle on the button below the produce bin.

    Excellent thanks. Problem I have is the sensor for my Hotpoint FF isnt listed anywhere on the web. I've searched and searched nowhere is it listed. So my question is can any sensor be used? Many look like mine but dont have the FF model number listed against it.
    I'm surprised that the only way to change a sensor is to cut the connectors. You'd think they were plug ins. Many thanks for an informative video.

    no, not the evaporator cover. It's a small oval 3"x2" plastic shield that covers the what looks like thermistor. It sits right in the middle of the wall dividing the fresh food and freezer sections, on fresh food side. I was going to try replacing the thermistor to see if my temperature issue goes away, but I can't figure out how to take it out.

    I will check the temperature sensors first. I can hear the evaporator fan motor running, so I don't think that's the issue. It appears that it just won't kick into defrost mode, as it's getting so cold, that ice is forming around the coils and halting the whole system from cooling.

  • @JesSchwartz

    I have a GE #GSH25JSTDSS (very similar to the one in this video). I am noticing that it will not go into defrost mode whatsoever. About 2 months ago, I thawed the freezer, as there was too much ice around the evaporator and the fridge and freezer wouldn't stay cold. After that, the fridge ran really well, up until now. It seems like the issue is happening again. In my searching I could not find a defrost timer for this model, should I replace the temperature sensor to start with? Thanks!

    I have a GE PSH23PSRA fridge that's reporting temperature around 40F in the main compartment, and close to 0F in the freezer. I'd like to think it's a thermostat, and I located one of them in the middle panel behind a small plastic cover. How do I remove the cover without damaging it? I'd like to test it with an ohm meter before replacing it?Thanks,

    >>>>>>>>>HELLO STEVE: I KNOW YOU WERE SHOWING HOW TO REPLACE THE SENSORS BUT IT LOOKED AS THOUGH THE DEFROST TERMINATION THERMOSTAT NEEDED CHECKING. LOOKED LIKE A SEPARATION BETWEEN METAL & MOLDED BLUE & COULD POSSIBLY BE BAD. THESE ARE USUALLY A VERY WARM 140 DEGREE LIMIT RATING ON GE BUT A BAD ONE WILL PREVENT PROPER DEFROST. I ALWAYS CHECK TERMINATION T-STAT ALONG WITH HEATER FIRST AS A PRACTICE. VERY NICE VIDEO, BY THE WAY. THANKS

    The temperature in my GE refrigerator and freezer both fluctuates up and down, it ranges from -6 to +13 on the freezer side and +36 to +48 on the refrigerator side. I google the symptoms and it brought me to your other video tutorial for replacing the control board. I replaced the control board and it did not help. Is there any other advice you can give me in repairing the refrigerator or will it be a job to big to handle for a novice like me. Thanks.

    Hello. I have a GE Profile Arctica Model #PSH25MGSA BV and our issue was that the refrigerator doesn't cool keeping food at room temp (freezer is fine). We had a Service Tech come out and said we had to replace the main board (which we did with one of your great videos) but the issue still exists. We are now being told it's the thermistor AP3185407. Does it sound like we need to replace the one in the fresh food section only or should we replace all of them? Thank you!!

    Hi - My GE side-by-side refrigerator (model GSH25JSXBSS) had a bad control board that I replaced. After that replacement, the compressor seems to be continually running and the freezer gets really cold. In a few hours of operation, the temperature in the freezer got down to -15 F and the refrigerator section got down to 29 F. The only way to turn off the compressor is to hold the warmer button for the freezer till the display shows 0 (range is 0 to 9 and 9 is the coldest). Does this indicate a sensor failure and if so, what sensor has failed here? Is it the freezer sensor, defrost sensor, or refrigerator sensor. How do I test them? Thanks!

    Hello. I have a GE Monogram Model ZCG 23 SGSC SS. I have had it now for 17 years. It has had both a new mother board and the other smaller board at the top inside of the fridge. Today, I noticed that the freezer is working all the time [compressor motor not switching off] and not stopping at all. The actual temperature currently reading -18 degree and yet the inside temperature according on the board inside the fridge shows just -12 degrees. The actual temperature in the fridge is 6.4 degree when the temperature has been set to 3 degrees on the inside panel. Do you think it is the sensors in both the fridge and freezer compartment that needs replacing? If so would it pay to replace both [assuming there are two - as per your demonstration fridge/freezer?]. Do you have the sensors for my fridge and can you please let me know if I can order them as I am in the UK? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

    Hello Mr. Steve
    Thank you for your responses. I mean that the freezer and refrigerator are working fine until the compressor or evaporator fan turn off around 30 minutes, it is less cold air into freezer and refrigerator compartment. After that the compressor or evaporator fan turn on and run til coldest as setup. This is temperature sensor, isn't it?
    I am watching your video, I see 3 temperature sensors in difference location, so which the temperature sensor I can fix it?

    • @partselect
      @partselect  10 лет назад

      The normal operation of this refrigerator is that the compressor and evaporator and condenser fans will run until the set temperature is reached. At this point the temperature sensors will cause the control board to shut off the compressor and fans.
      When a predetermined temperature rise has been detected by the sensors, the cycle will start over. This will continue until the control decides that a defrost cycle is needed and the components will be turned off and the defrost element will be energized. When the defrost cycle has been completed, normally about 30 minutes, then the cooling cycles with continue. The defrost cycle would normally occur less than once a day.
      If a sensor is defective, the symptom would normally be a higher or lower temperature being sensed in either the fresh food or freezer section.

      Hi Lynn; apologies for the delay in getting back to you. This question required a bit of digging! I would suggest the sensor located in the fresh food section on the left side wall. All of the sensors are the same part number so you could substitute to help isolate the problem, but they are also relatively inexpensive, so buying a new one is your best bet. I would start with the sensor before trying anything else. Hope this helps, and good luck with your repair!

    My temp sensor in the refrigerator is two different colors does it matter which one is connected to what. My model number GYE22HBLDTS also do I need to replace all three of the temp sensors I replaced one but the refrigerator is still too cold I already replaced the evaporator fan which was definitely defective because there was Ice build up in the bottom of the refrigerator it is still saying that the refrigerator is 20° and it's set on 34

    The thermostat I received, WP2198202 looks different than the one in the refrigerator (ED25PQXDN01). The wire contacts on the replacement part are oriented front and back instead of up and down as on the old part. I have a red (top) and orange (bottom) wire. Which wire goes to which contact on the new part?

      @partselect  7 лет назад

      Hi Jim, I have researched your model and part number and as per the manufacture Whirlpool they are no longer making the original thermostat they have now updated it to WP2198202 that you have received. I would suggest to contact the manufacture on how to install the updated part for your model.

    when installing a temp sensor in the freezer on a GE Profile side by side Refrig/Freezer does it matter which of the 2 wires get connected to original other 2 cut white wires that the sensor was attached to?

      Hi Ron, No, it doesn't matter which wires get connected.

    Hi again, sorry about that - it can be hard to visualize something like this since I'm not there to see it when my own eyes. :)
    Those little oval covers should pop off with some help from a putty knife. They'll have tabs keeping them in place, and you should be able to locate the resistance from the tabs by sliding a putty knife underneath, and then depressing the tabs with the putty knife.
    I hope that helps!

    I just changed the temp sensor that turns on the heater to defrost. But it seems the freezer will not shut off, it keeps running. Is this a bad temp sensor?

    Thank you very much! I replaced the three sensors, the defrosting resistance (was open) and my fridge is up and running again! Was very helpful your teaching. You are a professional.. Why I replaced all the 3 thermistors? Because if one is bad, the others maybe would be near to get bad too. Thanks..

    I have a Whirlpool Model WSF26D4EXW00 Refrigerator and need to replace the Water Dispenser Switch Pad, PN W10290361, however, I can't figure out how to disassemble the water dispenser from the freezer door. Do you have a video that shows how to do the disassembly for that model refrigerator?

    Hi. Ihave a GE side by side #GSG25MMDFWW . The freezer section is not getting very cold. the evaporator fan is not switching in but does work. Could it be one of the thermistors in the freezer section not working? Thanks

    • @partselect
      @partselect  10 лет назад

      Hi Edgar, although the evaporator fan appears to work, it could still be the source of your problem. Thermistor is also a possibility. I recommend heading over the the PartSelect Repair Page and having a look at the symptoms for both these parts and identifying which one applies to your appliance. Please see the note about which stages of some of these parts testing processes require a technician for safety reasons. www.partselect.com/Repair/Refrigerator/Refrigerator-Freezer-Too-Warm/. Hope the above is helpful; best of luck with your repair!

The freezer and fridge are working fine but after the evaporator fan stops and the temperature inside is cooling down until I saw in freezer has a line water and the evaporator fan is working again until the coldest. I have a GE double side refrigerator model # GSH22JFTAWW. The depensor control board does not display any functions, no water, no ice and the refrigerator is not turning on to cool down. However when I open the door the lights inside on both sides are working. Should I replace the depensor control board?

    • @partselect
      @partselect  11 лет назад

      Start with verifying that there is no power being supplied to the compressor, that you have incoming power to the control board and that the external controls are functioning properly. Look on the control board for signs of arcing, burnt connections or damaged foil. Remove power from the appliance before inspecting the control board. Hope that helps.

    I have a GE Profile PSC25PSWA and it's not under warranty. The issue is that it's leaking water in the freezer. I hit the Quick Freeze button and it does freeze. I noticed the temperature on the freezer doesn't want to stay at 0. I also notice that the refrigerator is staying at 45 degrees even though it's set for 37 degrees. I have a fractured pelvis and am off of work with no compensation so do not have the money to hire a repairman. Not to mention, the blogs show that repairman have to replace many of the same parts on this model repeatedly. I would like to order the parts online and fix it myself. Any thoughts?

    Steve, I have an Amana (Maytag) Mod # ASD2627KEW. My problem is that the refrigerator is freezing everything. Seems that the freezer never stops running. Freezer is sub 0 degrees F. Fridge is on top shelf 18F and gets warmer up to 26F on bottom shelf. I checked the Defrost Thermostat and it checks good. Not sure where and how to go next. Also it seems that the baffle is constantly letting air in. I have the settings to the lowest they go without turning the unit off. Can you please help? I'm kinda thinking the baffle may not be closing of due to the freezer constantly on.

    • @partselect

      Keith Ryder The problem could be with the electronic control if the compressor does not shut off and the damper stays open. You should check the temperature sensing thermistors first.

    • @keithryder7004
      @keithryder7004 9 лет назад

      After further investigation I found that the damper stays all the way open. Reached my hand inside, felt around, found that the spring is broken in the damper. Will let you know if replacing the damper solves all the problems.

    Hello Steve! I have a model PSC23NGNABB It's a GE Arctica. It is freezing my fresh vegetables and lettuce :( It has a place inside the fridge where you set the actual temperature for the firdge and freezer. Recommended temp for Fridge is 37 and freezer rec. is 0 degrees. So I tried turning down the fridge temp. to 43, but that still didn't do it, still freezing my lettuce etc. Is the problem those sensors taht you demo here? Or could it be something else. Should I call someone to fix??

    • @partselect
      @partselect  10 лет назад

      Hi rachian3! Thanks for the question and for getting in touch. Normally the sensor is the cause of this symptom, but you should check the airflow inlet to the crisper to verify that it is not mechanically stuck open and continuously allowing cold air to enter the crisper. Hope this helps; good luck with your repair!
