Portofino - Can Ferrari Break The Curse of The California? (Drive and Review)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 янв 2020
- The #Portofino is Ferrari's third car based on the California recipe - a front engined V8 with a folding hard top. Neither the original or the California T fared very well with car critics - so for the Portofino Ferrari have gone all out. We've shown you around the car, and now we're going out for the all-important drive.

This channel always has good and honest reviews, reminds me of the tv shows around the early 2000's where they wouldn't shove 0-60 times down your throat.
That's what I aim for
@@JayEmmOnCars you do a good job mate, much better than 90% of the platform.
99% or supercars owners don't give a f*ck of 0-60 , drag racing etc. Only idiots focusing on pure numbers
Ferrari reportedly sold over 10,000 California’s I would hardly describe that as a ‘curse’ for what its worth the Porto is a beauty.
Yeah I could never understand why some people have a thing against the California, if anything I think it was under-appreciated in it's time by the motoring press. It was the only front engine NA Ferrari V8 and the only one they will ever make. The 4.3 is also the best V8 engine Ferrari ever made, and it's the best model to drive around on the street. I think it got unfair expectations of being a track day tool.
Ferrari sales numbers from the factory have always been...well... To make a long story short : they send cars to dealerships, car have no registration yet (cars unsold) but once in the dealership, Ferrari factory count them as "sold".
I think people just see the california as cheapening the brand and pandering to people that want a cheap ferrari, it's a cash in so it's just not respected as its contemporaries.
@@sicqnuschannel4126 utter nonsense, Ferrari can sell 30,000 car a year if they wanted they dont need to fake sales figures.
@@sicqnuschannel4126 name a manufacturer that does it differently. They all do this. You think companies just send cars to dealers for free and let them sit there? Look up dealer floor plans and see how it works. Independent dealers “buy” cars from the manufacturer, the same way Wal Mart buys the items you see on the shelf.
Love the Portofino ...!! in Blue with Tan leather interior!!
Dodgy shirts, 70's porn star sunglasses and great car reviews, what a great channel!
Don't forgot his grandma blanket
I just stumbled across the Ferrari Roma on their website: it is basically a fixed roof Portofino with one of the most gorgeous bodies I have ever seen!
I may be in love...
Another excellently unbiased review. Honestly my fave car channel on RUclips rn
Thankyou very much
“600 Horsepower may not sound like a lot....” I laughed so loud I had to rewind the next 5 minutes.
Another cracking video - thanks.
I’m really liking your style of informative and no BS reviews.
4:52 McLaren says peekaboo
Ferrari says, smell my fart
I took delivery of my Portofino a week or so ago, almost identical to the car you are driving. Prior to it I had an Exige S2 (260) and put a deposit on a 570s spider which I cancelled on pre-delivery inspection.
The Portofino is in my opinion brilliant.
Great review you echo my thoughts on this car.
Replaced a 991.2 tS cab with a Portofino. It was £75k more (yes mine was also £240k+) but it feels it. I loved the tS and it's exceedingly quick but not special enough at the price-point and hard work over a 250m+ journey from a comfort and noise perspective. We went to St Andrews from Manchester in the tS to join the Portofino test drive days. We went for the trip with the test drive just a bonus thrown in. When we drove the tS back to back with the Portofino over the same roads the Ferrari was in a league above the tS from a GT perspective. Also have a late 458 Spider and have driven a 488 and the V8's are different animals. The truth .. you need both :)
Brilliant review Jay
Great review, they get better and better. Like the fact that it’s a real world review on normal roads. Do really fancy one of these, even though heart says 458 or 488.
Great watch as usual. I love the Suffolk countryside. You sometimes point out other unusual cars you see as you review (nice touch!). Any ideas as to what the red car was that was following in the early part of the video? A rare sight on Suffolk roads; two supercars!
Gorgeous looking thing, saw one parked up for the first time last week. The audio on here though makes it sound like a Golf R
Thanks for putting out another video!
Excellent review, Jay!!
Ha ha you know your getting old when you have to put a blanket on your knee in any circumstance 😁
Im fucked then at only 21
"The beginners car... how good are the others?" Nice ending mate makes me want one or one of the others. Cheers
Happy 2020 Jay - like your review, would be great if they'd let you have a V8 GTC 4 Lusso as a back to back comparison (sorry i wrote this before the words came out of your mouth) :)
It looks like a Ferrari. Drives like a Ferrari. It’s a easy car to live with. I know looks are subjective but it’s a great way into Ferrari ownership.
It’s expensive. Don’t act like it’s an affordable Ferrari.
@@vika0194 who acted like that?
Rick C Gareth....
So it's exactly like the California.
Another great review. Looking forward to the next one.
How was it for going up driveways, etc? In the SF bay area, many people interested in this type of car want to know if you can get in and out of their driveways.
Informative. Thank you
Just founded this channel and have to say, im really glad i did. In a way a younger Harry
I'll take that. Welcome!
JayEmm on Cars Bet Harry doesn’t use a blanket 😳
finally a reviewer says the truth about soft tops. imo they immediately make the car look cheap when the top is up. I thought I was the only one that thought that way
Great review!
You’re brave I can’t remember the last time I had my roof down, I don’t have heated seats 🥶
Wonderful review!
I've driven one yesterday in the streets of Maranello, it was a short but amazing experience as I hadn't driven any performance car before.
I was actually supposed to drive a California but it had some issues so I was (gladly) upgraded to the Portofino.
Glorious car and a great review.
Great review on a great car. Subbed. Good honest opinions with no bullshit.
Thankyou!
Great review - curious how it would do vs a turbo 992 when she comes out
Great review. Try and get your hands on an f8 tributo. Stunning car, played for one on botb
Great 3 part review!
This car is awesome. Keep up the good work.
I've had my 2017 Corvette C7 for 3 years now and I love it. The Ferrari Portofino would be a more luxurious and more even more beautiful version of the Corvette C7 that I'd like to own someday.
Great review! I have definitely dismissed the Portofino too, however sounds like I should swallow my pre-conceptions and give one a go too!
That's real "peng" right there
Great review. Beautiful car. I'd have one as the convertible in my fleet, if I had the money .... Until then, the 911 will have to do!
One of the best reviews of this car that I have seen! Quick question - Is the Roma just a Portofino in a Tuxedo? Thanks to Jayem for literally freezing his nuts to let us know how good the car is!
Driven the Portofino myself on road and track, you will be happy to know in the dry it can deploy all of its power, Ferrari excel with chassis and engine mapping. Hope Ferrari give you more cars to drive and once things warm up your welcome to try the 458, I dismissed the Portofino as to me though excellent it could of also being a AMG GTC or but I guess that is because this is their mass production car. You know I like a car to feel truly special but has daily ability, for myself 430's and older were a bit too raw for that duty and 488 and newer felt a bit well too good, the 458 was the perfect middle ground for me and the sound, oh the sound. :)
I'll definitely take you up on that!
You are driving the £240k version though, would you feel short changed with the looks/interior/suspension of the basic £180k model, without the enhancements, compared to it's competitors?
Good review as always James.
I also enjoy looking at all the old fashioned villages without traffic you go through, & the open road, rare in my part of the country!
Have you driven the new Z4 M40i yet? Obviously not a rival for the Portofino, but in its lesser class it also nails the GT/sports car thing imho. Great review as ever.
This is awesome!
I saw my first DBS Superleggera in the flesh today and boy does the profile look very similar to the Portofino.
I like the fact Ferrari are in different market segments unlike McLaren with their endless flavours of mid-engine two seater. Ferrari are there too with the F8 but also have the Portofino, 812, Roma and GTC Lusso (now retired) in other market segments and soon the SUV which I expect will offer the same sort of breath of fresh air as the DBX.
I have 2, soon to be 3, of the mid-engined cars and scratch the itch for a V8 front engined convertible with an ageing Mercedes SL55 AMG which does, say, 75% of what the Portofino does at a fraction of the capital tied up, albeit entirely matching the Portofino in terms of servicing costs.
What does concern me is that the Portofino has been replaced by the M version after hardly any time at all, Ferrari are getting to be too like McLaren with their constant model churn.
Next up should be Lusso T. Really interested in how it fares with British weather and roads...
James how about an FF next. Would a used FF be better value for money than a GTC4 Lusso? No 4-wheel-steering in the FF, and a little older styling. What else is different between the two?
Great review. Only owned my Portofino for couple of months but already one of my favourites.
if it's before Spring then defo a GTC4 Lusso, ideally the V12 with AWD
I'll be honest, I'm not too big a fan of the Portofino look, but practicality-wise, I'm very happy. If the Roma eventually gets a folding roof, I'm sold.
The Roma wont get a folding roof, because that would make it a Portofino
@@JayEmmOnCars Very true, very true. Ah well, maybe the upcoming 992 Turbo S Cabriolet is a little closer to what I'm looking for.
@@JayEmmOnCars they will probably update portofino v8 to roma spec next year. they won't pay for two versions of the same engine.
what would be interesting but sad will be if V12 Ferrari GTs go away because of environment concerns now that they have a v8 gt.
Makes Roma a perfect aston martin competitor.
@@LaFritePerreGoat Portofino is cheaper than Roma, dont expect miracles
@@JayEmmOnCars i am not rich enough to have check that first jayemm ahha! thx
Keep up the fantastic work. I am addicted to your Channel. You should be the next TopGear presenter. Chris H and yourself would be a great, great thing for the BBC 👌
Think I'd wait for the spec's and pricing on the Roma, Any inside info on that car yet James? Cheers mate
I doubt it will surprise - it's similar to the Portofino but much newer interior, and probably a tiny bit more power
Thanks to your video it convinced me to purchase a portofino in the near future
Same here. Was torn between the McLaren GT (or 570 spyder), AMG Roadster or thus one.
The AMG has top notch interior and build quality but a fabric roof. Friend of mine owns one and i was a passenger a few times. Never drove it tho.
The McLaren I test drove greeted me with an "engine failure" message in the LCD every third start. Thus, the usual mclaren "experience".
After watching this review, i'll contact my dealer next month. I will try to drop your YT handle too... Maybe theres something in there for you.
I have one. It's a great car. And unlike some of the other models - not too wide either. Goes into car parks and around smaller roads. Try that in a f8 tributo
I feel only AMG have mastered the art of keeping that muscle sound V8 despite the turbo noise plus EU emissions
Every year EU emission regulations gone pretty bonkers
Club Bmw Amg Im referring to stock exhausts, not after market
Great stuff as always, out curiously whats with the Yellow and white plates?
UK plates - white front, yellow rear. 😊
@@lastrolo1517 Thanks champ.
I would love to add a Portofino to my garage, it looks so stunning and seems to be the more practical everyday useable choice...
There is just one problem... The price, you can get a lot of Porsche for that kind of money, and they are not bad cars either.
They're very good cars, but everyone has them, which makes them soo boring to see.
I saw one on the street the other day in a creamy white paint (I don't know ferrari paint names) I thought it looked OK, but If I were capable of spending that kind of money, I would either go for looks and/or for performance, and it was too understated for the money
There is always a bus shot 1:12 on news programmes. Is that part of a cameraman's training...?
Good review, sounds better than the 488
My thoughts are it should be compared to other convertible 2+2s, Aston Porsche Masarati Jag all make one. I think the car would be more appreciated! Excellent review!
Jaguar doesn’t make a 2+2
@@vika0194 Referring to the XKR. Old but still a capable 2+2, well at least I think so.
I have a California T , came out of a 21 C8 vett. The California is every bit as quick , rides better handles as good and is 3.3 second cars . It’s an awesome car so pay no attention to the Ferrari snobs who for some reason don’t think it is . Not to mention my 15 was 140k used with 2 year warranty , not 440k . Having said that love the portofino as well . Personally I think Ferrari prices drop like a rock on these things in comparison to the Vett due to silly repair costs and perceived reliability . Start making repair costs in line with GM , Ford , etc and you would own the market again.
Love it 😍
I’d have one over the almost everything other than another Ferrari 👌🏻
Have you reviewed the California? I'd be interested to see what you think of it and whether it's a 'proper Ferrari'.
I wonder if there's an opportunity here to split your cars into two categories. For the majority of the cars you review, the bread and butter if you will, proceed as normal (a single, moderate length talk-and-drive). But, occasionally, pick a car to go into depth on, over several videos. I'm thinking interview the designer, and mechanics who work on them regularly (including putting it up on a hoist). Interview several long term owners. Find a standard one, and a modified one. I don't think any other channel is doing anything like that currently. And I don't think you'd necessarily pick the exotics to go in depth; sometimes a deep-dive into a more attainable car is more interesting. Food for thought.
I like your review(s) of this car. I would be very curious to hear your verdict of the new BMW Z4. Any chance that you'll get your hands on one of those for a candid review?
I dont have a relationship with BMW which is a shame, as I'd love to try the Z4
My exactly thoughts - z4 would be similar experience for normal ppl. I am looking at about 5 y.o. z4 for myself
@@JayEmmOnCars thank you for your reply. That is a pity. But I keep on hoping that one day in the future ...
@@awdadwadwad1723 the previous generation indeed looks nice. But, as you mention, it is already 5 years old. The newly developed version might be a lot better?
we are 4 mins in and discussing thigh & Knee warmth and granny blankets!
Always worried on the design for non home nation areas. When you see a volante Cabernet out of Italian Spanish South of France Portuguese sun shine.. The retractable hard tops brilliant so much smarter then the giallo odd tent manual
The Californian is a car for people who wanted a Ferrari without all the Ferrari drama. That and the 412, the 612. This will sell. My Dino used to break down every time I drove it, had appalling bouts of lift off oversteer, was enormous fun but too fragile for everyday use - which is how I drove it, howling along little backroads of the Cotswolds where I live. The Californian with its trick roof was brilliant. but servicing was ridiculous. After exploring a TVR Cerbera I now have an Elise....
Ask them for a GTC4 Lusso T next. It's got the same V8, but is bigger and heavier than Portofino so it would've better traction.
Isn’t it the right car for people who want an Aston Martin but better?
100% take a aston over this ...
maybe it is just the camera angle but your head looks very close to the top of the windscreen
Yeah this car is just too expensive right now, one of the rivals you mentioned, the f type SVR, can be had for under £60k now.
Big jaguar fan, my first car was an x type and had it for 3 years until it died. The f type doesn't look nearly as good.
Used f12 for me..they will stabilise this will tank
Yes the f12 is a great car. Definitely wouldn't buy a new portofino, too much depreciation to come. I was just talking about the F Type SVR because Jay mentioned it as a rival to this but its price is quite a lot lower and has depreciated a lot. It's like how half price the RRP already for 2-3 year old cars.
@@Harpreet06 yeah I never usually compare used cars as it's not a fair comparison but if your looking to get into ferrari ownership, as he mentioned, and have 160k to spend you can get an f12 for that money and get most of it back.. I'd expect to lose about 50k on this in two years if the previous cali market is an indicator.
If you want an insight into the nightmare that is Jaguar ownership, check out the recent video by Normal Guy Supercar. He seemed ultrarelieved to get rid of his despite taking a significant loss in a short ownership.
Get a lusso my friend
570s Spyder is discontinued ?
Who cares
I bet Mclaren banging their heads against Brick wall now 😅
So glad Ferrari stepped up and give u this , what a good daily driver !
Base spec. Standard colour option and spare set of wheels for winter/summer tyres.... Would be a great every day Ferrari.... All the Ferrari you need in the UK...
With a name like Portofino, it needs to prove itself in a cannonball.
Y tho
No
What if 992 Targa 4GTS or this if they’re the same price ?🤔
I'm with you Jay I'd take the F12 over the Portofino but it's still a cool car having said that I don't no why but I just keep thinking it look more Maza than Ferrari anyway loved the review 👌👍
Only just found out this isn't the guy from top gear series 1 who James May replaced
Yeah not him. He was older than me then
If u had a Peugeot 206 cc would u have the roof down In December
I love it when I see a convertible with the roof down when it's cold
You know the driver only has it fir a few days , otherwise you just wouldnt .
Not saying it's bad but it's a clear indication.of ownership.or not
I think there are three other cars which this can be compared with the Portafino.
1. Audi R8 Spider
2. Maserati Grancabrio
3. Mercedes AMG GT-C
I think the only thing keeping the Ferrari above the others is that it's a Ferrari. The main problem with that is, though it is a Ferrari, it will always be the entry level which will be forever compared with the Cali and Cali T. Yes, the Ferrari owners won't care about that, however there are a lot of owners who will feel the cost of a new Ferrari has to be justified by the status of the car, something I'm not sure the Portafino has.
You can’t compare it with F-type SVR more with SL63/65, DB11 Volante, Continental GTC but it is for someone who doesn’t want soft gt and doesn’t want supercar but wants a Ferrari...
Why does it sound better than the 488? Confusion
that portofino looks better than most 488. but the spec does a lot for it.
They let you drive it 500 miles!?
It's a press car.
And he would drive 500 more

The Portofino and Roma are the most beautiful Ferraris in my opinion
Folding top in UK? While it appears somewhat sunny, 2 degrees is possibly starting to look like "I have a convertible, I really ought to have the roof down if it's not raining", LOL.
Have always thought Ferraris are beautiful and go like hell, but also are temperamental, impractical and grotesquely expensive.
Seems they've managed to eliminate the temperamental tag, not sure about the impractical, while retaining the looks, performance and grotesque pricing.
I got a laugh at you smacking Lotus, too; I suppose they won't be offering you something to drive any time soon? I'd not be suspect if Ferrari, however, were to give you a more "petrol head" toy in Summer given the comprehensive, fair minded yet no-nonsense quality of this review. (They may have already as I've not yet caught to current date with all your content)
Cheers
Dude it competes with a Porsche turbo cabrio
Edit: I got to the part where he compares them
Great and honest video but I have to disagree with you on the looks it’s no where near as good looking as the f type or Vantage
The naturally aspirated first edition California sounds better & I prefer its looks, plus it’s a lot cheaper! In real world driving you’ll not notice much difference.
Better still you do not need to spend huge amounts to buy a Ferrari! Watch John Pogson on Drive, he handles his Ferrari Mondial 3.0 QV superbly enjoying every minute in a sub £35k car with a manual gear shift. In much the same way as I enjoy my 1988 Mondial 3.2! For me I just don’t like paddle shifters & the turbo sound, & I think in the UK we tend to only use our Ferraris when the weather’s dry & driving conditions are good.
Are Ferrari using the BMW Z4 roof mechanism....?
So would the new Roma take the spot of the portofino, being that it’s the “entry level” car for Ferrari?
Theyre not in the same category. The Roma is more powerful than the portofino, and is more related to an entry level 612 scaglietti type than the open top California type. So they're both the entry point to Ferrari
theSpe3d creator ahhh ok. All I heard from news was that it’s Ferrari’s new entry level car so I was thinking it was replacing the portofino. Thanks for clearing that up. Cheers
Well, it's basically a fixed top, more powerful and different look Portofino from what I hear.
Actually, stating it like this make it sound like a totally different car. Uhm...
Anankin12 it’s an interesting thing to observe. I’m honestly interested in how the Roma will do as far as performance when they release a press car to content creators and future car events.
Ask for a LaFerrari next time!
