This show was great. Well written, great locations, pretty ladies, Navy Seal Vietnam veteran, Ferrari, and a .45. Just what a ten year old boy needs to see to get a proper perspective on life.

Meanwhile the politics and economics erasing all that in reality ...
"thank you for your service" contributing to USA being the biggest parasite in the world ... yeah great service ...
Basically I loved Magnum because it's 100% fiction and I treat it as such too even as a kid I had enough common sense and basic logic to know better. Fast forward to today I see many adults in USA behave like spoiled 4 year olds ... and their children are even worse ...

If I recall correctly, it's been 35 years, since Mr. Selleck decided to end Magnum at season 7, but CBS didn't have a show to replace it. Even with its poor ratings, CBS needed to renew Magnum for one more season; all they had to do was meet Mr. Selleck's demands. met Mr. Selleck's demands for an eighth and definitely final season. Mr. Selleck's main request for the 8th season was extreme fiscal compensation for the cast and crew. I.e., anybody who worked on Magnum didn't have to worry about money after season 8.
And then there is Jillie Mack. She appeared in three episodes of Magnum. During her private time, she was and still is Mrs. Tom Selleck.

Fun side nuggets - the original Magnum show had some ties to the "Air Wolf" TV show development. The later Magnum show was part of the Lenkov-verse in which it had ties to "NCIS", "JAG", "McGuyer", "Five-O", and even some reunions for actors from the TV show "Lost". At least that's what the wiki for Air Wolf and the Lenkov-verse says. Apologies if this was already covered and thanks for the fun show Minty!

Several military members were background extras on Magnum PI and Tour of Duty. Both were filmed on Oahu.
I made $50 a day on Tour of Duty.
My former Company Commander, Captain Bruce Barnes USMC, was featured more on Magnum PI on one of the last episodes.
Magnum is hiding and about to snipe a Vietnamese prisoner being exchanged for an American POW from the Vietnam War.
Captain Barnes, now retired Colonel, is seen rolling up in a jeep and scanning the area. Season 8, Episode 8: Unfinished Business (1988).
Last I heard, Colonel Barnes worked at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

Hey Mint, as a hard core 80s TV guy, I watched this with great interest. I would never pass on Magnum or MacGyver. So when they decided to remake these I was somewhat skeptical and with good reason the new MacGyver was destroyed, but Magnum was a surprise Jay Hernandez created his own version of Magnum and Higgins as a British woman did take some getting used to, but she grew on me. Over the 5-year run, it had its ups and downs, but I watched it till the end. The show also brought back a few of the original actors, such as Roger E. Mosley as a barber and Larry Manetti as Nicky 'The Kid' DeMarco. I'm sorry they cancelled this one.

To be truly honest I have only seen a few episodes of the show and I think I only ever watched reruns on cable tv at a hotel several years ago but the theme song was definitely one of the things that stuck around in my mind. This is not a show that I grew up with and it isn’t an important piece of my childhood but the main reason I came here was because I love your channel’s content and your reviews. A very entertaining summary of a classic show, Minty. Wearing my Detroit Tigers cap as I type this!
Although it is understandable that we might assume now that 1970s films and shows concerning Vietnam veterans such as The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and First Blood - as well as allusions in the form of M.A.S.H. - were somehow stereotyping Vietnam veterans, at the time the situation was not as clear-cut. These films were highlighting the issue of PTSD that was at that time poorly-understood, officially downplayed, and horribly under-resourced during the conflict and the first few years afterwards. The condition of PTSD was not officially recognised until 1980; and that was largely due to the heightened awareness that popular media brought to the campaigns of veterans themselves - which had been sidelined and denigrated as unpatriotic and an offshoot of the '60s counter-culture by certain political factions of the time. It is also the case that it became an effective political tool at the time to try to garner support from former veterans by lauding their patriotism to turn against critics of the war... and counter-intuitively to laud their stability against those who wanted support for those veterans to be increased. In summary, to turn their dislike against the depictions of their own suffering rather than against the authorities failing to provide the mental and financial support they needed.
When the US agency Veterans Affairs conducted their first study in 1983, they discovered that among Vietnam veterans, approximately 15% of men and 9% of women were found to currently have PTSD. Approximately 30% of men and 27% of women had PTSD at some point in their life following Vietnam, and many of these were experiencing PTSD as a chronic condition a decade after the end of their service. When reexamined in 2013, for some 40 years after service, 7% of female and 11% of male veterans who had served in combat zones still exhibited PTSD, of which 37% had depression related to it.
Although I like to think that Magnum PI and the A-Team were well-meaning in their efforts to show veterans in a positive light, and a majority of veterans of that conflict had reintegrated positively into their lives, it would be a disservice to some of the other depictions of life after Vietnam to suggest that they were in some way intended to stereotype veterans - rather than to highlight the desperate need for recognition and support for some 700,000 who still need it to this day.

Well- it was a goofy little show, but me being a Tom Selleck fan, what great acting. From the first episode to his first big screen debut; "Quigley Down Under" I have the full Mangum P.I. series on DVD- watch it a couple times a year and have most of his movies- except for "3 Men and a Baby". Sharron Stone, Frank Sinatra, Robert Loggia, Carol Burnett, just an amazing cast. But now I am hooked on the TV adapted book series, "Stone Cold" Forget the re-boot of Magnum P.I., watch the Stone Cold series and you will see glimpses of the Tom Magnum character all grown up, less whiny, and total bad-assery! Good stuff!

Magnum, P.I. wasn't a Glen A. Larson show. It was a Donald P. Bellasario show (creator of Quantum Leap, JAG, NCIS, and Tales of the Gold Monkey). Magnum was originally cancelled with season 7 but it was saved by one season by a fan campaign and CBS' desperation to fill the time slot. There was a lot of picketing at CBS headquarters to bring back Magnum by fans. In fact, season 7's ending pretty much ended the show for good and they had to get creative to undo it with the season 8 opener.

#12 - Higgins would actually be revealed as Robin Masters in the final episode, though this wasn't planned at the beginning of the series. Orson Welles was originally meant to play Robin Masters but he died before he could do so.

I loved the show, but it was at the same timeslot as some of my other favorite shows in the 80s- Automan, Mork&Mindy, Greatest American Hero, Starman, Max headroom. Thursday night, ABC showed cool scifi/fantasy shows. When Magnum PI moved to Wednesday, it was against Macgyver. So the timeslots didn't help... and the story got tired. and it never made any sense that Magnum seemed to never have any moiney? but "Robin" let him stay in the mansion, and use all his cars and stuff? I know in the end, they sorta said it was higgins... but that seemed just dumb

I'm looking back on the show now. I found or wish to believe that Magnum P.I & The A-Team were both in the same shared universe. Connection being time Magnum, Rick, T.C spent in Da Nang. This also happens to be written on the back of Murdock jacket as he was a chopper pilot in Da Nang. which puts him directly in the same timeline as T.C. 🤯

The MacGyver remake was great. You have to go into with the mindset of "if MacGyver was made during modern times" without looking for too many similarities with the original. They are two separate shows, basically. If you can do that, you will love it.

"The guy" you quoted from JAWS was Peter Benchley, the author of the book the movie was based on.

Loved this one. You should try to do one on the Hunter tv series of the 80s.
