Hey Minty That idea of having both Kevin Costner's Robin Hood and Cary Elwes Robin Hood meeting up in a scene and simultaneously saying something like "Oops, I'm in the wrong movie" and then walking off in opposite directions would've made for a hilarious addition
Hot Shots! Part Deux has this kind of scene with the patrol boats passing by on the river. By the time I hit high school it was so popular that we did a live "Men In Tights" style skit in my chorus class. I was in charge of costuming and I could NOT have been happier handing out tights to the guys in my chorus class.
This film is a masterpiece...and i watch it regularily. It has a great atmosphere and charme that a lot of modern productions lack. Mel Brooks Films are simply great work.
The only element more powerful than humor is love. Everyone should make it a priority in their life to find humor in everything, especially in themselves. And yes, definitely during the present time. I am now off to rewatch this, (Men in Tights), and Spaceballs. Oh, and then Princess Bride.
I always think Richard Lewis's performance in this movie is very underrated, hes funny as f.. also over the years, that simple "Achoo" ... "Bless you" makes me laugh more now than back when it came out.
Why would Cary Elwes' actually English Robin Hood have complimented Kevin Costner's Robin Hood's underwear? Pants are pants in England. Trousers are trousers.
That gag was used in "Hot Shot Part Deux" when Charlie Sheen is heading up river in a patrol boat and passes Martin Sheen in a patrol boat (Apocalypse Now style) going the other way, father & son shout in unison "I loved you in.......".
This is one of the few movies that has ever made my dad bust out with uncontrollable laughter. It remains as one of my favorite movies, next to Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs.
Brooks talked on stage once about his first years working in Hollywood as a young man. His stories were insane. Someone should make a movie about a young Mel Brooks
I loved it when it came out, and I still love it now. One of my favourite movies of all time. I could watch it over and over and over and never tire of it. “We’re men/ MANLY men/ We’re men in tiiiiiights!”
It's interesting that Sean Connery almost starred in this film, as he actually portrayed Robin Hood before Cary Elwes or Kevin Costner, in the 1976 film Robin & Marian, alongside Audrey Hepburn.
I grew up watching this movie and Prince of Thieves on a regular basis. Almost shaped my entire childhood, along with other VHS tapes my parents had, like Ladyhawke, Princess Bride, Hoosiers and others. All three of us still quote Men in Tights to each other to this day!
Loved this movie growing up! Especially the mole that moved around Prince John's face.... Lol! "Unlike some Robin Hoods I can do an English accent...." SAVAGE!! 😂😂😂
Rottingham: “I was mad at first Robin, but now I’m really pissed off!” Achoo: “Pissed off? If I was that close to a horse’s wiener, I’d be worried about getting pissed on!” I just love this movie. It was my grandfather’s favorite movie and I grew to love it too.
When you said two Robin Hoods, I thought you're gonna mention the fact that Matthew Porretta who played Will here was also a Robin Hood in a TV series in 1997 :)
I hadn't realized Robin #1 from Robin of Sherwood was Will! That makes the almost-Connery-cameo even better, since he was replaced by Jason Connery as Robin in the second season.
I only got to watch this movie once as a kid, and i still remember laughing to the song numbers, having a good time.. Oh, how you dug up those memories Minty, nice one!
What I love about Roger Rees's performance is that he had to parody a character that Alan Rickman already hammed up beyond belief, and he still somehow found a way to dial it up even further. But we can't talk about that without mentioning what a perfect foil Richard Lewis was for him as the absurdly Yiddish Prince John.
Highly recommend you check out his other works. Blazing Saddles especially. Always good to keep in mind the Era in which they were written and released though. Some (like Blazing Saddles, and the unrelated altogether TV show All in the Family) likely would have never seen the light of day in today's media environment. May the Schwartz be with you!
I literally forgot that Dave Chappelle was in this movie. I haven't watched in almost two decades and didn't even think about it until this Minty video lol
I was going to comment this and thought I would just see if anyone else forgot about Chappell too. I loved this movie when I was a kid I think I'll rewatch it.

This and young frankenstein are my favourite Mel Brookes films. Saw this in the cinema when it came out and still watch it at least every 2 years. Excellent video on this.
One of my favorite childhood memories was being 9/10 sitting in the back seat of the car with my buddies singing "we're men...we're men in tights TIGHT tights" song. We thought it was the funniest thing ever, now almost 30 years on I can say, you were right kid, it is!
I was about 9-11 or so when I saw this, just a couple years after it came out. This movie made me realize not only did I have a crush on Cary, but Amy Yasbeck was just GORGEOUS
Fun fact - the "Hampster Dance" song that was a huge craze in the late 90s/early 2000s is actually the intro song to Disney Robin Hood played at high speed.
This was the first time I saw Dave Chappelle! I remember I loved Mel Brooks’ other films like “History of the World Pt. 1” and “Spaceballs”, so I begged my Mom to take me to see this in the theater. I think I was about 12-years-old. I was also a big fan at the time of the Kevin Costner “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” film so was extra excited to see Brooks spoof that. While not a bad film, definitely not up there with Brooks’ best work like the previous two films I mentioned and other classics of his like “Blazing Saddles” and “The Producers”. (The original film with Gene Wilder is waaaaayyyyy better than that trash we got with Matthew Broderick)
Screw the critics, this has been one of my favorite movies since the first time i saw it as a kid, after quoting Prince of Thieves for a year or two. Both are great movies in all honesty.
Erik The Viking and Yellowbeard are kind of in the same vein as this movie, with that Monty Python flavor added. Not super popular at the time but cult classics now. Would love to see you cover those flicks! Fun fact, Mark Blankfield (Blinken) starred in Jeckyl and Hyde Together Again, another of my favorite unknown silly comedies. I hope folks check it out. Thanks Minty!

I didn't know them before I saw Austin Powers destroy them. :D
Me!
I saw this in a theater with a friend as a kid and we laughed SO hard my face hurt for hours afterwards.
The scene with Blinkin hitting the pilar with his sword still makes me lmao 😂
Blinkin is my fave character
"Blinkin, What are you doing up there?"..... "Guessing? I guess no one is coming"
I can see!!! (Smacks into a tree)
Uhh maybe not.
I remember when we were kids me and my brother would do the scene where Robin Hood is fighting little John on the bridge using tree branches, lol
The only element more powerful than humor is love. Everyone should make it a priority in their life to find humor in everything, especially in themselves. And yes, definitely during the present time. I am now off to rewatch this, (Men in Tights), and Spaceballs. Oh, and then Princess Bride.
The part where they all dance and sang "we are men in tights TIGHTS tights" and blinkin' punched the people around him made me almost die laughing.
Love that scene!🤣👍
Looking for that scene now! Lol or when he is the "watchman" I'm "guessing" "I'm guessing no one is coming"
Best Kennedy Centre Honors EVER: ruclips.net/video/zJn8hu00Gao/видео.html&ab_channel=TheKennedyCenterHonors
The Kevin Costner jokes legit had me cracking up out loud 😂
"we may look like sissies, but watch what you say or else, we'll put out your lights!" *gets accidentally punched by Blinkin*
My favorite part!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭
I always think Richard Lewis's performance in this movie is very underrated, hes funny as f.. also over the years, that simple "Achoo" ... "Bless you" makes me laugh more now than back when it came out.
Both Lewis and Roger Rees are absolute gold as the villains in this film.
@@steelerfreak1977 Totally!
Costner's cameo should've been a bump-in bit, but they would say, simultaneously "Nice pants" & "Nice tights" to one another 😂
"I loved you in Wall Street"
That would have been great.
@@mistycrom you're that type that can't enjoy the little things in life because your aspergers makes you needlessly ovethink trivial nonsense.
This is one of the few movies that has ever made my dad bust out with uncontrollable laughter. It remains as one of my favorite movies, next to Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs.
I forgot that Prince John's mole moved about his face.
"Hey, Abbot!"
I hate that guy..
Men in Tights was just added to RUclips Movies for free on January 1st of this new year. So this video is excellently timed by Minty.
Whaaaaaat?! That's fantastic news!
Minty you have made a wise decision there to start 2021 off.
And it was, is and will continue to be the funniest version of Robin Hood..
Prince John: you change you’re name to Latrine..??
Latrine: YEA! Use to be SHiTHOUSE!
Prince John: That’s a Good change!
Lmao 😂 love this movie!
"It's a very good change."
One of the funniest gags in the movie
I didn’t realise it until recently but when the king decreed that the toilet be known as the John, him and Latrine had a lot more in common! Haha
I hope that his style of movies get popular again, cause god they are good.
I just love that the guy who played little John is the dad from Good Luck Charlie
I'm so glad I'm not alone on that. 😂
My mind is blown
Yep! Good call
Brooks talked on stage once about his first years working in Hollywood as a young man. His stories were insane. Someone should make a movie about a young Mel Brooks
The movie you're looking for is called My Favorite Year (1982).
Well, add on top that he was a bomb disposer in World War 2. His life is truly amazing.
Now he's 94 and a half. Didn't know he was that old already. Hopefully he can live for a little while longer. And thank you Mel for all the laughs.
"Well, you know what they say... No Noose.. is good noose"😂😂
I heard his voice
@@Shad0wBoxxer same here
Rottingham: "Begging your pardon sire,...but wasn't your mole on the other side before?"
King (Richard Lewis): "I have a mole?!" 0_o
🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭
I loved it when it came out, and I still love it now. One of my favourite movies of all time. I could watch it over and over and over and never tire of it. “We’re men/ MANLY men/ We’re men in tiiiiiights!”
It's interesting that Sean Connery almost starred in this film, as he actually portrayed Robin Hood before Cary Elwes or Kevin Costner, in the 1976 film Robin & Marian, alongside Audrey Hepburn.
"I didn't say 'Abe Lincoln', I said 'Hey Blinkin."
I grew up watching this movie and Prince of Thieves on a regular basis. Almost shaped my entire childhood, along with other VHS tapes my parents had, like Ladyhawke, Princess Bride, Hoosiers and others. All three of us still quote Men in Tights to each other to this day!
We just might have been separated at birth….
Loved this movie growing up! Especially the mole that moved around Prince John's face.... Lol!
"Unlike some Robin Hoods I can do an English accent...."
SAVAGE!! 😂😂😂
I have a MOLE???
Rottingham: “I was mad at first Robin, but now I’m really pissed off!”
Achoo: “Pissed off? If I was that close to a horse’s wiener, I’d be worried about getting pissed on!”
I just love this movie. It was my grandfather’s favorite movie and I grew to love it too.
As someone who grew up on a farm, I can agree you would get pissed on by the horse in that situation. Not speaking from experience, thank goodness.
Your grandpa is a man of culture.
"Achoo, god bless you"
"Latrine, what an unusual name, my family changed it, it used to be shithouse" one of my favorite movies
I had SUCH a crush on Amy Yasbeck...oof.
She was in the mask as well
Yes!
Didn't she play in Dracula Dead and Loving It as well.
@@delfredmarshall8416
Yes she did
She was in the Problem Child movies too....Married John Ritter in real life
When you said two Robin Hoods, I thought you're gonna mention the fact that Matthew Porretta who played Will here was also a Robin Hood in a TV series in 1997 :)
An 11th thing we didn't know
I was waiting for this tidbit, I loved that show
I hadn't realized Robin #1 from Robin of Sherwood was Will! That makes the almost-Connery-cameo even better, since he was replaced by Jason Connery as Robin in the second season.
@@citrinedragonfly you've got the wrong Robin Hood TV series there.. The one that had Matthew Poretta was The New Adventures of Robin Hood
Or that Star Trek episode wherein Q turned Picard into Robin Hood:
"I'm not from Nottingham!"
I only got to watch this movie once as a kid, and i still remember laughing to the song numbers, having a good time.. Oh, how you dug up those memories Minty, nice one!
Watch it again
What I love about Roger Rees's performance is that he had to parody a character that Alan Rickman already hammed up beyond belief, and he still somehow found a way to dial it up even further. But we can't talk about that without mentioning what a perfect foil Richard Lewis was for him as the absurdly Yiddish Prince John.
liked it when it came out..
LOVE it many years later.
it literally gets better the more u watch it..
Did you just say Abe Lincoln?
Nooo, I said Hey Blinkin
I freaking love this line!
Did you just say US Secretary of State, A. Blinken?
😂
I grew up watching this on TV. I've never seen any other Mel Brooks movies other than a few scenes of Spaceballs. One of my favorite comedies.
I was surprised he was only 19 when he did the movie. Makes me feel old now
As many times as I seen it I never realized it was him
This is such a memorable and quoteable film, gonna have to watch it again today.
(Blinkin on the watch tower)
"What are you doing Blinkin"
"Guessing..."
Elways has done plenty of serious roles. He could easily play a grounded realistic Robin Hood.
Days of Thunder for one
He way creepy in the movie Kiss the girls, so he can play a bad guy too
Those translations to the "English Accent" line CRACKED ME UP!!!
"I don't dance with wolves" LMAO
I'm still laughing at Minty's pronunciation of Quebec: "KOObek."
I was about 9-11 or so when I saw this, just a couple years after it came out. This movie made me realize not only did I have a crush on Cary, but Amy Yasbeck was just GORGEOUS
My favorite part is the “exit“ sign in the Kings banquet hall.
Not the studio camera breaking through the window in the bath scene?
I loved this movie, as well as Dracula: Dead and Loving It.
Another one of my favorite parodies. "Renfield, you asshole!" Renfield then brushing the dust in a pile and drawing a happy face on it!
I remember watching this on HBO when I was a kid, it was my very first Mel Brooks film.
Anybody: decides to make a movie
Critics: "So you have chosen death..."
Audiences: We're still watching it.
Critics opinions are so wrong compared to the actual audience. Like 2 people's views are the only ones that matter.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! One of my childhood favorites. Watched it dozens of times with my sisters.
I got to meet Cary Elwes a couple of years ago at Atlanta's Dragon Con, real sweet guy!
Unlike some other Robin hoods I'm a human like fox that was currently designed by Disney ooh da lally
Golly what a day
Fun fact - the "Hampster Dance" song that was a huge craze in the late 90s/early 2000s is actually the intro song to Disney Robin Hood played at high speed.
Still love the song "The Phony King of England"
"I HAVE A MOLE?!"
i LOVE Cary Elwes! It's kinda rare for such a physically beautiful man to be so funny.
Ahh Imogen Stubbs
That movie is classic especially the music numbers.
I remember watching this at a friends house in third grade and I didn't know Dave Chappelle was only 19 at the time! Fuck I'm getting old 🤣
Friend, your comedy is spot on! I Howled with laughter at that line! The line, the look... Excellent!
I can imagine the Costner cameo as you said but Costner says "Nice Tights". And then Elwes says "Thanks" in a deeper voice. Lol
